Top Piano Players in the World
Martha Argerich
Martha Argerich could be considered the next Beethoven, as she is one of the most outstanding pianists ever to play. Argerich preferred being on stage with others instead of performing solo; therefore, she has been performing in a concerto format since the 1980s. Argerich was not one for the spotlight, as she often avoided public appearances such as interviews; however, her great talent was all the publicity she needed, standing out during concertos and sonatas.
Leif Ove Andsnes
Known for his appealing performances of Edvard Grieg’s works, Andsnes has won praise for his performances at some of the world’s most famous concert halls. Andsnes has certainly made his mark in Norway, as he is the founding director of Norway’s Rosendal Chamber Music Festival. Because of his unique voice and interesting approach, he was praised by The New York Times as a “pianist of authoritative elegance, power, and insight.”
Alfred Brendel
Known for his beautiful interpretations of Beethoven, Haydn, Schubert and Mozart, Alfred Brendel was considered one of the greats. He played in various concertos throughout his career and became known for his interpretive coldness in recreating these works. Brendel was considered one of the greatest musicians of the 20th century, as he made his mark in the classical music industry. Brendel was self-taught and learned his love of piano at an early age.
Arthur Rubinstein
Arthur Rubinstein was certainly one of the greats. His career began in the early 20th century when he began to come into contact with some of the world’s most important composers, such as Maurice Ravel, Paul Dukas, and Jacques Thibaud. He made various trips worldwide and visited nearly every continent, where crowds met him with great praise and encouragement.
21.What does the female pianist focus on in her career
A.Skills in hosting concertos and sonatas. B.Cooperation with other musicians.
C.Close relationships with the media. D.Unique ways to interpret music.
22.Who learned music by himself or herself
A.Martha Argerich. B.Leif Ove Andsnes.
C.Alfred Brendel. D.Arthur Rubinstein.
23.How is Arthur Rubinstein different from the other pianists
A.He was the director of a Norwegian festival.
B.He made a difference in classical music.
C.He was the best musician of the 20th century.
D.He got in touch with some famous composers.
B
When I graduated from college and moved to Washington, D.C. in 2017, I left all of my friends behind. Making and offering home-cooked meals was my best attempt at making new friends and curing my loneliness. My food was pretty good. Soon enough, everyone was asking me for the recipes, which is how Bun Bo Bae, my cooking blog, came to be in 2019.
As a matter of fact, I spent most of my childhood in the kitchen with my mom. As a toddler, I'd sit and watch her cook. My duties started with just passing her the ingredients. Soon, I was measuring, steaming and stir- frying my way toward kitchen mastery. I left for college before I could learn my mom's best dishes.
In 2015, I went abroad to study in France. I was living alone—truly alone—for the first time in my life. There were no roommates, dorms or dining halls. I was on my own and I was desperately homesick. So, I started calling my mom and asking for the recipes for my favorite dishes.
It turns out that my mom doesn't have any recipes and my grandma passed on her knowledge orally. Now it was my turn. Bun Bo Bae was initially a space for me to put what I learned into writing. I didn't want all of the secret knowledge behind dishes to disappear one day if the oral tradition ended. I wanted to write down every piece of advice I was given in detail, to make sure people could keep creating these dishes as authentically as possible.
My blog has given me a space to write about what I love on days when I feel too depressed. It's connected me to countless new Internet friends. Most importantly, writing for Bun Bo Bae has taught me that I should cook up something entirely new with my own experience instead of perfectly recreating my parents’ traditions.
24.Why did the author establish Bun Bo Bae
A.To remove the feeling of loneliness. B.To satisfy new friends' requirements.
C.To try to improve her cooking skills. D.To share opinions on cooking meals.
25.What is the second paragraph mainly about
A.The author is a great helper in the kitchen. B.The author has a memorable childhood.
C.The author makes progress in cooking. D.The author fails to enjoy the best dishes.
26.Which of the following can best describe the author
A.Professional and outgoing. B.Ambitious and caring.
C.Independent and honest. D.Generous and responsible.
27.How does Bun Bo Bae help the author
A.By giving a chance to enrich her experience. B.By inspiring her to develop her creativity.
C.By offering a platform to express herself. D.By reminding her to spread her parents' traditions.

Some ants have figured out how to avoid getting lost: build taller anthills, according to a recent study.
Desert ants living in the hot, flat salt pans of Tunisia spend their days looking for food and reach as far as 1.1 kilometers from their nests. To find their way home, desert ants use a navigation system, relying on the sun’s position and counting their steps to track their location relative to their nest.
But this system becomes increasingly unreliable as the distance from the nest increases. “We realized that, whenever the ants in salt pans came closer to their nest, they suddenly pinpointed the nest hill from several meters distance,” says Markus Knaden, a researcher at Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology. “This made us think that the hill serves as a nest-defining landmark.”
So Knaden and colleagues captured ants from nests in the middle of salt pans and from along their shorelines. Only salt-pan nests had distinct hills, up to 40 centimeters tall, whereas the hills on shoreline nests were lower or barely noticeable. Next, the team removed any hills and placed the captured insects some distance away from their nests. Salt-pan ants struggled more than shore ants to find homes. Shore ants relied on the shoreline for guidance and weren’t affected by the hill removal, the researchers concluded.
The team further conducted another study to see if desert ants were deliberately building a taller hill when their surroundings lacked any visible landmarks. So, the researchers removed the hills of 16 salt-pan nests and installed (安装) two 50-centimeter-tall blocks near eight of them. The other eight nests were left without any artificial visual aid. After three days, the researchers found that seven ants from the unaided nests had rebuilt their hills. But only two ants from the nests with man-made blocks nearby had bothered to rebuild.
“It implies that ants regularly assess the complexity of their environment and change their decisions based on their conclusion,” says ecologist Judith Bronstein of the University of Arizona.
28.What aspect of ants is the recent study mainly about
A.Challenges of survival. B.Landmarks of habitats.
C.Intelligence of navigation. D.Comparison of varieties.
29.What does the underlined word “pinpointed” in paragraph 2 mean
A.Explored. B.Recognized. C.Climbed. D.Crossed.
30.Why did researchers set shoreline ants in the experiment
A.To observe different ants’ reactions. B.To prove impacts of various habitats.
C.To disturb desert ants’ navigation system. D.To test anthills’ functions and significance.
31.What conclusion about desert ants can be drawn from the follow-up study
A.Evaluate and make changes. B.Visual aid is a must.
C.Cooperation brings victory. D.No man-made blocks are used.
D
People solve some new problems readily without any special training or practice by comparing them to familiar problems and extending the solutions to the new problems. That process, known as analogical reasoning (类比推理), has long been thought to be an ability only humans have. But now people might have to make room for a new kid on the block.
Psychologists from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) claim that, astonishingly, the artificial intelligence (AI) language model GPT-3 performs about as well as college undergraduates when asked to solve the sort of reasoning problems that typically appear on intelligence tests and standardized tests.
But the psychologists raise the question: Is GPT-3 copying human reasoning as a by-product of its massive language training data set or using a fundamentally new kind of cognitive (认知的) process They also say that although GPT-3 performs far better than they expected at some reasoning tasks, the popular AI tool still fails completely at others. “It can do analogical reasoning, but it can’t do things that are very easy for people, such as using tools to solve a physical task,” says Taylor Webb, a UCLA postdoctoral researcher in psychology.
Webb and his colleagues tested GPT-3’s ability to solve a set of problems inspired by a test known as Raven’s Progressive Matrices, which ask the subject to predict the next image in a complicated arrangement of shapes. To enable GPT-3 to “see” the shapes, and make sure that the AI tool had never met the questions before, Webb transformed the images into a text format that GPT-3 could process.
The psychologists asked 40 UCLA undergraduate students to solve the same problems. Surprisingly, not only did GPT-3 do about as well as humans but it made similar mistakes as well. GPT-3 solved 80% of the problems correctly — well above the human subjects’ average score of just below 60%, but within the range of the highest human scores.
32.What is analogical reasoning usually considered
A.A simple learning skill. B.A unique human ability.
C.A vital thinking process. D.A solution to any problem.
33.What did Webb want to stress about GPT-3’s performance at other tasks
A.Its system has some limitations. B.Its application hasn’t been popular.
C.It needs to be trained for these tasks. D.It is good at copying human reasoning.
34.Why were the shapes changed to a text format
A.To add difficulty to the questions. B.To enable GPT-3 to see the results.
C.To guarantee the foreignness of the tasks. D.To test GPT-3’s ability to identify text.
35.What might the psychologists conclude about GPT-3 from their tests
A.It will replace humans in some cases. B.It rarely makes mistakes like humans.
C.It is able to do things very easy for people. D.It runs undergraduates close in reasoning.
We’re lucky to live in an age when the sum total of human knowledge is pretty available at the click of a button. We’ ve never had access to so much information. 36 . So here are a few strategies to sharpen your critical thinking.
Watch out for confirmation prejudice(偏见). 37 . In repeated experiments, psychologists have shown we’re much more likely to accept something as evidence if it confirms what we already think we know. And we’re much more likely to ignore information if it is not in line with our views, which will affect our ability to process information.
Acknowledge small differences. In life, most situations are varying and complicated. Admitting that can enrich the way that we view the world. For example, what colour is the sky Well, the obvious answer is blue. But at sunrise or sunset, it can be red. On a cold misty morning, white or gray. 38 .
Practise intellectual humility (谦逊). One approach to, well, arguing, is to let go of the idea of being “right”. Or at least seriously consider that you might actually be wrong. 39 . Really try to understand where the other person is coming from. Arguing is just to waste somebody’s time.
40 . It’s more important than ever to know where your information is coming from. That science-looking paragraphs might look very convincing until you dig a little deeper and find it was just posted by someone having no qualifications. That is the case we should not overlook.
Engaging in critical thinking isn’t as fun as picking up a pitchfork, or feeling like you’re fundamentally right. But in the long run, it leads to a more curious, educated and harmonious society, which is the biggest win of all.
A.Avoid mistakes
B.Check your sources
C.We all enjoy feeling like we’re right
D.But not all of what’s out there is quite what it seems
E.So pay attention to differences in many situations
F.So don’t rush to decide, and be actively prepared to change your mind
G.Putting yourself into the other person’s shoes can have more fruitful outcomes

When I was 15, I fell in love with the songs when they were first released — Bring Him Home, I Dreamed A Dream and On My Own. Even though I hadn’t read Les Miserables and knew very little about the musical, the songs captured my attention and I happily sang along with enthusiasm and energy whenever I heard them on the radio.
At the age of 17, I watched Les Miserables in a theatre of Vancouver. After getting home, I was really thrilled and announced that I wanted to perform in the musical. Hearing what I said, my parents did nothing but support me, although they considered the thought ridiculous, given that we lived 50 kilometres from the nearest large town, Toowoomba. There was little likelihood of ever having a chance to perform.
But some things are just meant to be. The Toowoomba Choral Society bought the performance rights with the view to perform it. Although I was not a member of the choir, they called for auditions (试镜) and I went along. I had had no experience singing and had never performed in any musicals but I believed in miracles and hoped that there was a place for me somewhere in the chorus.
I tried out for the part of Javert but did not have the range. Little did I know there were a host of parts that needed filling. Fortunately, I was chosen to be in the chorus as well as playing seven roles — ten costume changes in all. It was so exciting to play all the different parts. Rehearsals (排练) started immediately and I got a crash course in singing, acting and dancing. There was so much to learn and as I drove to rehearsals three times a week a little voice would say, “You are in over your head, get out now.”
I really had a hard time rehearsing — first with written texts and sheet music and then without. Personally, I struggled. So much to learn really made me so crazy that I had a strong desire to quit. And the little voice “You are in over your head, get out now.” rang in my ears again.
注意:
(1) 续写词数应为150左右;
At that time, my parents’ determined look appeared in my mind.

A
Top Piano Players in the World
Martha Argerich

注意:
(1) 续写词数应为150左右;

【答案】17.A 18.A 19.C 20.A
In the small town of Fountain Hills and the nearby area, nature was dying off quickly. Some people thought it was because it hardly rained at all during last winter, and it was one of the driest winters the area had experienced on record. It was so bad that some people even thought that the government was doing secret chemical testing. The farmland around Fountain Hills was no longer producing good food, and people were getting sick more often. One day, some scientists came to see if they could find out the cause. As they were walking through a field that was only half-full of sunflowers, they noticed something unusual: the silence. Except a few black birds calling, there was no noise. They knew something important was missing — the bees! The scientists rushed back to the town and discovered that the local government had been killing off the large population of bees there. Fortunately, the scientists came up with a solution. They offered to teach the local people about how bees are good for the environment and their lives, and how bees would help the area start growing again. In the future, the scientists would remove bees from the town if the population of the bees grew too big again.

根据第一段“My food was pretty good. Soon enough, everyone was asking me for the recipes, which is how Bun Bo Bae, my cooking blog, came to be in 2019.(我的食物很好吃。很快,每个人都向我要食谱,这就是我的烹饪博客Bun Bo Bae在2019年诞生的原因)”可知,作者创建烹饪博客Bun Bo Bae是为了满足新朋友们的要求——讨要菜谱。故选B。
25.主旨大意题。根据第二段“As a matter of fact, I spent most of my childhood in the kitchen with my mom. As a toddler, I'd sit and watch her cook. My duties started with just passing her the ingredients. Soon, I was measuring, steaming and stir- frying my way toward kitchen mastery. I left for college before I could learn my mom's best dishes.(事实上,我童年的大部分时间都是和妈妈在厨房里度过的。当我还是个蹒跚学步的孩子时,我会坐在那里看她做饭。我的职责是从给她递食材开始的。很快,我就学会了量菜、蒸菜和炒菜,逐渐成为厨房的行家。我还没学会我妈拿手的菜就去上大学了)”可知,这一段主要讲述的是作者在烹饪方面取得的进步。故选 C。
26.推理判断题。根据第四段“I didn't want all of the secret knowledge behind dishes to disappear one day if the oral tradition ended. I wanted to write down every piece of advice I was given in detail, to make sure people could keep creating these dishes as authentically as possible.(我不希望有一天,随着口述传统的终结,所有隐藏在菜肴背后的秘密知识都消失了。我想详细地写下我得到的每一条建议,以确保人们能够尽可能地继续制作这些菜肴)”可知,作者不希望隐藏在菜肴背后的秘密知识消失,所以主动承担起传承菜谱的责任,并把菜谱写在博客上来与大家分享,以确保人们能够制作这些菜肴。故可推知,作者是一个既有责任感又慷慨的人。故选 D。

【答案】28.C 29.B 30.A 31.A
故选A。
根据第五段中的“After three days, the researchers found that seven ants from the unaided nests had rebuilt their hills. But only two ants from the nests with man-made blocks nearby had bothered to rebuild.(三天后,研究人员发现,无人帮助的蚂蚁巢中有七只蚂蚁重建了它们的丘陵。 故选A。
【答案】32.B 33.A 34.C 35.D
文章第一段讲到“That process, known as analogical reasoning (类比推理), has long been thought to be an ability only humans have (这个过程被称为类比推理,长期以来一直被认为是只有人类才能拥有的能力)”可知,类比推理能力通常被认为是人类独有的能力。故选B。
文章第三段讲到“although GPT-3 performs far better than they expected at some reasoning tasks, the popular AI tool still fails completely at others. ‘It can do analogical reasoning, but it can’t do things that are very easy for people, such as using tools to solve a physical task (尽管GPT-3在某些推理任务上的表现远好于他们的预期,但流行的人工智能工具在其他任务上仍然完全失败。”它可以进行类比推理,但不能做对人们来说很容易的事情,比如使用工具解决物理任务)”可知,关于GPT-3在其他任务中的表现,Webb想强调的是它的系统有一些局限性。故选A。
文章第四段讲到“To enable GPT-3 to “see” the shapes, and make sure that the AI tool had never met the questions before, Webb transformed the images into a text format that GPT-3 could process. (为了使GPT-3能够“看到”形状,并确保人工智能工具以前从未遇到过这些问题,Webb将图像转换为GPT-3可以处理的文本格式。)”可知,将形状更改为文本格式是为了保证任务的新颖性。故选C。
35.推理判断题。文章第二段中的“the artificial intelligence (AI) language model GPT-3 performs about as well as college undergraduates(人工智能(AI)语言模型GPT-3的表现与大学本科生差不多)”以及最后一段讲到“Surprisingly, not only did GPT-3 do about as well as humans but it made similar mistakes as well. (令人惊讶的是,GPT-3不仅表现得和人类一样好,而且也犯了类似的错误。)”可知,GPT-3的推理能力和大学本科生差不多一样好。D项中run sb. close“与某人不相上下,与某人差不多一样好”。故选D。
第二节(共5小题:每小题2. 5分, 满分12. 5分)
阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

首字母大写,此处“the Mongolians, Tibetans and Kazaks live in vast natural grasslands”与“horsemanship is vital to their existence”构成因果关系,故应用从属连词As/Since/Because“因为”引导原因状语从句,故填As/Since/Because。
故填are。
此处意为“应该做某事”,表达为be supposed to do sth.,ensure用不定式形式,故填to ensure。

One possible version:
At that time, my parents’ determined look appeared in my mind. They had always been there for me, and I didn’t want to disappoint them. Instead, I wanted to make them proud. With this in mind, I resolved to push through any challenge and continue rehearsing. I sought guidance from my fellow cast members and practiced timelessly at home. Gradually, I began to understand the characters and their emotions, and my singing and acting skills improved significantly. Finally, the big day arrived.
On the opening night, nervous as I was, I gathered my courage and stepped on the stage. The audience’s applause filled me with confidence, and I knew that my hard work would pay off. Throughout the performance, I felt a strong connection with the other actors and the story we were telling. As the final note came to an end, I knew we made it. I felt a sense of accomplishment. I had achieved the impossible — rising above my limitations and performing in the greatest musical. My unexpected musical journey taught me that with determination, perseverance, and support from others, I could overcome my obstacle.
