(23·24上·成都·期中)Should we allow modern buildings to be built next to older buildings in a historic area of a city In order to answer this question, we must first examine whether people really want to preserve the historic feel of an area. Not all historical buildings are attractive. However, there may be other reasons — for example, economic reasons — why they should be preserved. So, let us assume that historical buildings are both attractive and important to the majority of people. What should we do then if a new building is needed
In my view, new architectural styles can exist perfectly well alongside an older style. Indeed, there are many examples in my own hometown of Tours where modern designs have been placed very successfully next to old buildings. As long as the building in question is pleasing and does not dominate (影响) its surroundings too much, it often improves the attractiveness of the area.
It is true that there are examples of new buildings which have destroyed the area they are in, but the same can be said of some old buildings too. Yet people still speak against new buildings in historic areas. I think this is simply because people are naturally conservative (保守的) and do not like change.
Although we have to respect people’s feelings as fellow users of the buildings, I believe that it is the duty of the architect and planner to move things forward. If we always reproduced what was there before, we would all still be living in caves. Thus, I would argue against copying previous architectural styles and choose something fresh and different, even though that might be the more risky choice.
1.What does the author say about historical buildings in the first paragraph
A.Some of them are not attractive.
B.Most of them are too expensive to preserve.
C.They are more pleasing than modern buildings.
D.They have nothing to do with the historic feel of an area.
2.Which of the following is true according to the author
A.We should reproduce the same old buildings.
B.Buildings should not dominate their surroundings.
C.Some old buildings have destroyed the area they are in.
D.No one understands why people speak against new buildings.
3.By “move things forward” in the last paragraph, the author probably means “”.
A.destroy old buildings B.put things in a different place
C.choose new architectural styles D.respect people’s feelings for historical buildings
4.What is the main purpose of the passage
A.To explain why people dislike change.
B.To warn that we could end up living in caves.
C.To admit how new buildings have ruined their surroundings.
D.To argue that modern buildings can be built in historic areas.
【答案】1.A 2.C 3.C 4.D
根据第三段的“It is true that there are examples of new buildings which have spoilt(破坏)the area they are in, but the same can be said of some old buildings too(的确,一些新建筑破坏了它们所在的区域,但一些老建筑也同样如此)”可知,作者认为一些旧建筑毁坏了他们所在的地区。故选C。
根据第三段最后一句“I think this is simply because people are naturally conservative and do not like change(我认为这很简单,因为人们天生保守,不喜欢改变)”可知,作者认为人们天生保守,不喜欢改变,根据第四段第二句“If we always reproduced what was there before, we would all still be living in caves(如果我们总是重现以前的样子,我们都还会住在洞穴里)”可知,如果建筑师不改变建筑风格,我们现在还住在山洞里面。
文章第一段“Should we allow modem buildings to be built next to older buildings in a historic area of a city(我们是否应该让现代建筑建在城市历史地段的老建筑旁边) ”作者提出问题,下文就此展开论证;最后一段“Thus, I would argue against copying previous architectural styles and choose something fresh and different, though that might be the more risky choice(因此,我反对复制以前的架构风格,而选择一些新颖和不同的风格,尽管这可能是更危险的选择)” 作者得出结论,认为现代建筑可以建在历史区域。

1.根据上文“According to a study done by University of Michigan researchers, shopping to relieve stress was up to 40 times more effective at giving people a sense of control. (根据密歇根大学研究人员所做的一项研究,通过购物来缓解压力,给人一种控制感的效果要高出40倍)”以及后文“In fact, shopping to reduce stress can actually help you live a healthier life by making sure that your blood pressure is lowered. Shopping to relieve stress is also called retail therapy as a form of regulating stress. (事实上,通过购物来减轻压力可以让你的血压降低,从而帮助你过上更健康的生活。通过购物来缓解压力也被称为零售疗法,是调节压力的一种形式)”可知,本句承接上文继续介绍研究的积极发现:购物者比只看商品的人快乐三倍。故G选项“购物者比只看商品的人快乐三倍”符合语境,故选G。
2.根据上文“However, the side effect of retail therapy is unavoidable. (但是,购物疗法的副作用是不可避免的)”以及后文“But in time, it possibly grows into a trend that runs out of finances and causes conflicts, therefore adding a significant amount of stress to a person’s life. (但随着时间的推移,它可能会发展成一种耗尽资金并引起冲突的趋势,因此给一个人的生活增加了大量的压力)”可知,本句与后文构成转折,指出购物疗法的作用:作为一种相对无害的情绪助推器。故D选项“它可以作为一种相对无害的情绪助推器”符合语境,故选D。
3.根据后文“Whether you’re purchasing Christmas presents or buying groceries, it’s wise to have the items you need written down before going. That will provide you with clarity and order while you’re shopping. Reward yourself for sticking to your list and you’ll be more likely to commit to it: buy a cup of coffee while shopping or plan a fun activity for when you return home. (无论你是买圣诞礼物还是买杂货,在去之前把你需要的东西写下来是明智的。这会让你在购物时条理清晰。奖励一下自己,你会更有可能坚持下去:购物时买杯咖啡,或者回家时计划一个有趣的活动)”可知,后文提到了去购物之前把需要的东西写下来,即准备购物清单。故B选项“购物前准备一份清单”符合语境,故选B。
4.根据上文“For example, if you spend too much money on dining out on the weekends, stock your cupboard with groceries on Friday. (例如,如果你在周末外出就餐上花了太多的钱,那就在周五的时候在你的橱柜里装满杂货)”可知,上文提到了在周五的时候在你的橱柜里装满杂货,本句为本段最后一句,故承接上文说明这么做的作用:将鼓励你呆在家里做饭。故C选项“这将鼓励你呆在家里做饭”符合语境,故选C。
5.根据上文“Give up the need to keep up with your neighbors, co-workers, and friends. Everyone’s financial situation is different and it’s dependent upon a variety of factors, least of all being one’s self parison leads to debt. (放弃与你的邻居、同事和朋友保持联系的需要。每个人的财务状况都是不同的,这取决于各种各样的因素,最不重要的是一个人的自我价值。攀比导致负债)”可知,本句与上文并列,都是在说明攀比的不良影响:负债、对你已经拥有的感到不满。故E选项“你甚至对你已经拥有的感到不满”符合语境,故选E。

第四部分 写作(共两节, 满分40分)
第一节(满分15分)
Jessica and Cayla were two sisters, who loved each other very much. They were not only sisters, but they were best friends, too. They liked to eat, play, go to school and do everything together. Nothing could break them apart!
One day, there was a running race competition at school. Both Jessica and Cayla were very fast runners and they were sure they would win if they signed up for it. They were very excited to participate together. And there were other friends too, who were all going to run.
The judge blew the whistle… toooot!! Everyone started running. Jessica and Cayla were running as fast as they could. They were running so fast that they passed everyone in a very short time. The audience was cheering, “Look at the sisters. They are so fast, like lightening!” Hearing the cheers, they ran even faster. They barely looked at each other.
Suddenly Cayla hit a stone on the race track. She got hurt and fell down, with her leg bleeding. She called Jessica to stop and give her a hand. She groaned (呻吟) with pain. But Jessica wouldn’t stop or look. She guessed that Cayla just had a slight fall. She had only one thought on her mind. She had to win this race!
Jessica reached the finish line first. The judge announced, “You are the first, Jessica!” But, there was no applause from the crowd. Jessica was surprised. She had won but no one was clapping for her. She turned back to see if her sister Cayla was close behind her. But she was not there! Jessica was worried that something bad had happened.
Jessica started running back. Soon she reached the spot where Cayla was lying injured. Jessica felt awful. She was not there for her sister when she needed her the most.

Feeling guilty for her behavior, Jessica sat down to check Cayla’s injury. She found that Cayla was injured, and she regretted running without waiting for her sister. “what’s wrong with your leg I’m sorry I thought you had a slight fall and you could stand up to continue the race, so I couldn’t stop running. I’m so sorry to leave you alone, but I wanted to get the first place. You see, I did it.” Cayla smiled and said, “I’m OK. Don’t worry about me. Congratulations! I’m proud of you.” “Do you want to finish the race ” Jessica asked. “Yes, let’s finish it together.” Then Jessica lifted Cayla up and they ran slowly towards the finish line.
When both the sisters reached the finish line, they hugged. They laughed and cheered because they could finish the race together. Seeing that scene, teachers and students all clapped for their courage and deep sisterhood. Nothing could break them apart! They were still good sisters and best friends, too.
