M: OK, but first we need to put on our hard hats for safety.

M: Really I wouldn’t expect that to taste good, but it does.
W: Well, eat up. There’s still plenty more. It’s so nice for me to have a visitor, and I love making cakes.
M: Shouldn’t you save some cake for your family
W: They live a long way away. I never see them. I hardly ever see anybody.
M: That’s sad.

M: No, those can’t be recycled. Just put them with the general waste.
W: I don’t see why everything can’t go in there.
M: Because if things are recycled, the materials can be used again, saving the Earth’s energy and resources.
W: What about these plastic bottles and cans Where do they go
M: In the white bag. Look, it tells you on the information card. If you lose that, the information is on the Internet.
W: I suppose this big plastic plate can go in the bag too.
M: Yes, but wash it first. It can’t go in if it’s covered in food.
W: Oh, so many rules. Every Tuesday I have this problem, because it is collected the next day.
M: Once you get used to it, it will be no problem at all. Plus, you can feel good about yourself because you are helping the environment.
W: In the old days, we didn’t have this problem. People used things again. They repaired things, because they were too precious to be thrown away.
M: This is how things are in the modern world. We throw too many things away.

Good evening, passengers. On behalf of the United Airlines pilots and ticket counter clerks, I regret to tell you of the extended delay tonight. Our team closely keeps an eye on the air traffic at this airport. We believe the current weather conditions are too risky to make a safe departure. Due to the increasing level of this snowstorm, many flights have already been canceled, but luckily, we’ve managed to hold our primary place in line for departure, once the weather conditions improve. Unfortunately, that might not be until tomorrow, and airport hotels are almost entirely occupied. For our elderly passengers here, we have a few beds available in the airport lounge. Still, the majority of passengers will have to rest in the terminal chairs and benches tonight. We will provide pillows and blankets for all. Many of you are flying for the holidays, and I’d like to remind everyone that helping you arrive home on time is a main priority — second, of course, only to safety. We will be hearing more updates from the weather team within the next hour. The moment we receive this news, we will announce the additional information. We’re sorry for your waiting. And thank you for your patience and cooperation.

根据第一段“Universal Beijing Resort is a widely expected theme park destination featuring several all-new attractions. To ensure a safe, secure and pleasant environment, please obey the following regulations.(北京环球度假区是一个广受期待的主题公园目的地,拥有几个全新的景点。为了确保安全、可靠、愉快的环境,请遵守以下规定。)”以及下文内容可知,文章是北京环球度假区的游客须知,介绍了北京环球度假区的一些相关规定;由此可知,本文是写给游客的,希望游客遵守度假区的规定。故选A项。
根据“Food Policy”下文中“The following food and drinks will not be allowed into the Resort (except for medical, infant, or special dietary needs)(以下食物和饮料不允许进入度假区(因医疗、婴幼儿或特殊饮食需求除外))”以及“Food and drinks in glass containers (e.g. soda in glass bottles, etc.)(装在玻璃容器中的食物和饮料(例如装在玻璃瓶中的苏打水等))”可知,北京环球度假区规定装在玻璃容器中的食物和饮料不能带入度假区;由此可知,C选项“Drinking coffee from glass bottles.(喝装在玻璃瓶中的咖啡。)”

根据第一段中“Raley, a 24-year veteran of wildland fires, had seen nearly everything, including swirling eddies of air called fire whirls. (作为一名对野地火灾有着24年经验的老手,Raley见过几乎所有的情况,包括被称为‘火旋风’的空气漩涡)”可知,Raley在应对野地火灾方面有十分丰富的经验。故选B项.
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第三段““I’ll lead you out,” Raley yelled to Kumar. “Take your car.”(‘我带你出去,’Raley对Kumar喊道。‘带上你的车。’)”以及最后一段中“Behind them, the trunk of Kumar’s Tesla was a flame.(在他们身后,Kumar那辆特斯拉的后备箱燃起了火焰)”可知,Raley让Kumar开着特斯拉跟在他车后,把他带出去,Kumar开着他的特斯拉跟在Raley的卡车后从火灾中疏散。
根据文章最后一段中““Are you okay ” Raley shouted, though he knew the answer. He was embarrassed. He’d told this trapped family that he would get them out safely. Now they were covered in glass and bleeding. Behind them, the trunk of Kumar’s Tesla was a flame.
文章主要讲述了加州消防队长Raley帮助Kumar一家从山区野火中疏散的故事;文章中倒数第三段““I’ll lead you out,” Raley yelled to Kumar. “Take your car.”(‘我带你出去,’Raley对Kumar喊道。‘带上你的车。’)”中的“I’ll lead you out”是作为消防队长的Raley对Kumar的承诺,能够概括文章主旨;因此C选项“Lead You Out(带你出去)”,适合作为最佳标题。故选C项。
C 29. D 30. A 31. B
根据第二段“Why this impressive animal went extinct has puzzled scientists since the ape was discovered nearly a century ago. But now, a new analysis suggests that the primate’s unique lifestyle left it vulnerable.(自从近一个世纪前类人猿被发现以来,这种令人印象深刻的动物为什么会灭绝一直困扰着科学家。但现在,一项新的分析表明,这种灵长类动物独特的生活方式使其变得脆弱)”可知,这项新研究的目的是找出步氏巨猿为什么会灭绝的原因。故选C。
【29题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段“The new study combines geological dates, pollen records, and clues preserved inside fossil teeth to present a detailed timeline of when, and how, Gigantopithecus blacki went extinct.(这项新研究结合了地质年代、花粉记录和保存在牙齿化石中的线索,给出了步氏巨猿灭绝的时间和方式的详细时间表)”可知,这项新的研究结合了地质年代、花粉记录和保存在牙齿化石中的线索,揭示了步氏巨猿衰退和最后灭绝的时间。
根据第三段“The new study combines geological dates, pollen records, and clues preserved inside fossil teeth to present a detailed timeline of when, and how, Gigantopithecus blacki went extinct. The results reveal the creature’s decline and ultimate demise in fine detail(这项新研究结合了地质年代、花粉记录和化石牙齿内部保存的线索,提供了黑巨齿龙何时以及如何灭绝的详细时间线。研究结果详细揭示了这种生物的衰落和最终的死亡)”以及最后第一段“This research opens new questions even as it explains the disappearance of Earth’s most huge ape.(这项研究提出了新的问题,即使它解释了地球上最巨大的类人猿的消失)”可知,这项新的研究确定了步氏巨猿消失的时间。故选A。
根据倒数第二段““It was the response of G, blacki to these changes that sealed its fate,” Westaway says. The giant apes were so big that they had to move on the ground and were limited in how far they could venture, trying to make the most of twigs, bark, and other tough foods that were still accessible. It wasn’t enough.(Westaway说:“正是步氏巨猿对这些变化的反应决定了它的命运。”类人猿太大了,它们必须在地面上移动,而且它们的冒险距离有限,试图充分利用树枝、树皮和其他仍然可以获得的坚硬食物。这还不够)”可推知,从Westaway 关于巨猿的话中,我们可以得知步氏巨猿无法快速适应环境的改变,从而导致了灭绝。故选B。
【答案】32. A 33. D 34. C 35. B
根据第四段“In images streamed as the impact neared, the egg-shaped asteroid grew in size from a little spot on screen to have its full rocky surface come quickly into focus before the signal went dead as the craft hit right on target.”(在撞击临近时流传的图像中,这颗蛋形小行星从屏幕上的一个小点变大,在信号消失之前,它的整个岩石表面迅速成为焦点,因为飞船正好击中目标。) 故选A。
根据倒数第二段中“The impact was the peak of NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) ,a 7-year and more than $300 million effort which launched a space vehicle in November of 2021 to perform humanity’s first ever test of planetary defense technology. ”(这次撞击是美国宇航局双小行星重定向测试(DART)的最关键测试。这个于2021年11月发射航天器的测试将历时7年、耗资超过3亿美元,其目的就是进行人类第一次行星防御技术测试。)可知,这次发射航天器的目的就是进行人类第一次行星防御技术测试。故选D。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“But planetary defense experts say in reality, if astronomers spotted a dangerous incoming space rock, the safest and best answer might be something more subtle, like simply pushing it off course by crashing it with a small spacecraft.”(但行星防御专家说,在现实中,如果天文学家发现了一个即将来临的危险的太空岩石,最安全和最好的解决办法可能是一些更巧妙的东西,如简单地推动它偏离轨道与一个小航天器撞击。)和第四段“That’s just what NASA did on Monday evening, when a spacecraft headed straight into an asteroid called Dimorphous, which is around 7 million miles away and poses no threat to Earth.
根据最后一段第一句“NASA plans to launch an asteroid-hunting space telescope named NEO Surveyor in 2026”(美国宇航局计划在2026年发射一架名为“NEO测量者”的小行星搜寻太空望远镜),以及Lindley Johnson说的话“We’ve tacked lots of space rocks, especially the larger ones that could cause extinction-level events. Thankfully, none currently threaten Earth. But many asteroids the size of Dimorphous haven’t yet been discovered, and those could potentially take out a city if they came crashing down.”(“我们已经发现了很多太空岩石,尤其是那些可能导致物种灭绝事件的较大岩石。值得庆幸的是,目前没有一个较大岩石威胁到地球。但许多二晶形大小的小行星尚未被发现,如果它们坠毁,它们可能会摧毁一座城市。”)可知,NASA之前主要研究大行星,但其实未被发现的小行星才是对地球有威胁的。所以可推测出NEO Surveyor后期的目标应该是发现相对比较小的小行星。故选B。
第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
【答案】36. F 37. D 38. A 39. G 40. B

下文“Relaxing recharges you with energy. In contrast, procrastinating drains it from you. The less energy you have, the greater the chances of you putting off your responsibilities, and, once more, you will accomplish nothing.(放松会给你补充能量。相反,拖延会耗尽你的能量。你的精力越少,你推卸责任的机会就越大,而且,再一次,你将一事无成)”说明本段主要讲述了拖延症和放松的区别。空处为段首句,起到统领全段的作用。A项“也不要把拖延和放松混为一谈。”符合语境,适合作本段的主旨句。故选A。
上文“The studies on procrastination ever conducted indicate that failure of the ability to listen to ourselves is most likely the main reason why we put things off. The scientific name of this ability is self-regulation. Self-regulation is the ability to consciously control your emotions.(曾经进行的关于拖延症的研究表明,倾听自己的能力的失败很可能是我们拖延的主要原因。这种能力的科学名称是自我调节。自我调节是有意识地控制情绪的能力)”说明自我调节能力差是我们做事拖延的主要原因。空处顺接前文。G项中的“ this ability”指前文中的“自我调节能力”,说明这种能力越发达,你就越经常做你告诉自己要做的事情,你就能更好地抵抗诱惑。故选G。
【40题详解】
上文“To overcome procrastination, you need to start by setting the bar as low as possible. Creating habits isn’t about quantity; it’s about small steps and regular repetition. By making gradual increases, once you learn a new habit, you can strengthen your willpower muscle. As you slowly raise the bar, your willpower will gain strength.(为了克服拖延症,你需要从尽可能低的门槛开始。养成习惯与数量无关;它是关于小步和有规律的重复。通过逐渐增加,一旦你学会了一个新习惯,你就能增强你的意志力。当你慢慢提高标准时,你的意志力就会增强)”说明克服拖延症是要从低门槛开始,形成一个新的习惯,让后在慢慢提高标准,这样意志力就会增强。空处总结前文,B 项“它越强大,你就越容易取得突破”中的it指点前文中的“willpower”,说明意志力越强大,你就越容易取得突破。故选B。

Cal Fire captain Shawn Raley barked evacuation (疏散) orders over the radio for the neighborhood of Sunset Terrace. The sky was red and the wind screamed. New fires lit in bushes and on roofs. Raley, a 24-year veteran of wildland fires, had seen nearly everything, including swirling eddies of air called fire whirls. But he hadn’t seen anything like this.
At around 7:15 p.m., he drove toward areas in the wooded hills. He figured that residents would need help escaping. His headlights barely pierced the smoke, but he could see three bulldozers (推土机) inch past him on two-lane Buenaventura Boulevard. Don Andrews drove one; Terry Cummings and Jimmie Jones drove the other two. They were under swaying electrical line, and Raley shouted at them to move away.
In the driveway of a house, Raley spotted a Tesla with someone in the driver’s seat. Dr. Thiruvoipati Nanda Kumar had raced eight kilometres home from Vibra Hospital. His wife, Yasoda, and daughter, Sushma, hadn’t received an evacuation alert, and when the power cut out, their garage door wouldn’t open. locking their car inside.
“Go back!” Raley shouted at Kumar, sounding his siren.
“My wife and daughter are there. Can they come in Kumar said, pointing to Raley’s vehicle. He figured they’d be safest with the captain.
“Come in my truck ” Raley asked. “Yes.”
The women jumped into the back seat, coughing. Nearby, flames that climbed 30 meters burned their neighbors’ homes. Soon theirs would fall, as well.
“I’ll lead you out,” Raley yelled to Kumar. “Take your car.”
Debris (碎片) attacked the truck, cracking Raley’s windshield and breaking the other windows as the wind blew the vehicle off the road. The captain threw himself across the passenger seat, protecting his face as the fire passed over them. Yasoda and Sushma screamed.
“Are you okay ” Raley shouted, though he knew the answer. He was embarrassed. He’d told this trapped family that he would get them out safely. Now they were covered in glass and bleeding. Behind them, the trunk of Kumar’s Tesla was a flame.

Never has there been a primate as big as Gigantopithecus blacki. Adults of this ancient ape (猿) stood about 10 feet tail and could weigh more than 500 pounds, wandering the thick forests of ancient China during the last Ice Age.
Why this impressive animal went extinct has puzzled scientists since the ape was discovered nearly a century ago. But now, a new analysis suggests that the primate’s unique lifestyle left it vulnerable.
The new study combines geological dates, pollen records, and clues preserved inside fossil teeth to present a detailed timeline of when, and how, Gigantopithecus blacki went extinct. The results reveal the creature’s decline and ultimate demise in fine detail.
Kira Westaway, lead author of the new study and a geochronologist at Macquarie University in Sydney, worked to come up with more accurate dates for the sediments (沉积物) that Gigantopithecus fossils have been found in. Studies of fossil pollen from the Gigantopithecus sites also allowed researchers to study how the animal’s habitat was changing. Prior to 700,000 years ago, both Gigantopithecus and Pongo weidenreichi, another ancient ape, lived in forests where they ate leaves, fruits, and flowers available much of the year round. Due to the environmental changes, dense forests of pines, birches and chestnut relatives gave way to more open habitats with larger patches of grassland However, Gigantopithecus had a difficult time finding preferred foods. Meanwhile Pongo weidenreichi changed its diet to live on-fibrous-plants that were more readily available.
“It was the response of G, blacki to these changes that sealed its fate, ” Westaway says. The giant apes were so big that they had to move on the ground and were limited in how far they could venture, trying to make the most of twigs, bark, and other tough foods that were still accessible. It wasn’t enough.
Yet knowing the ending of the ape’s story hardly closes the case on the giant primate. Did these huge primates follow the same path to extinction, or did the story vary by location This research opens new questions even as it explains the disappearance of Earth’s most huge ape.
28. What does the new research aim to do
A. To study the climate changes of ancient China.
B. To analyze the geological features of the last Ice Age.
C. To solve the mystery of the Gigantopithecus blacki’s extinction.
D. To present some detailed findings of the Gigantopithecus blacki’s habitat.
29. What does the underlined word “demise” in the third paragraph mean
A. Change. B. Removal. C. Adaptation. D. Extinction.
30. What do we know about the study
A. The timing of the giant ape’s disappearance was worked out.
B. Another ape was included to show their common habitat.
C. The environmental shift had little impact on the giant ape’s habitat.
D. Some fossil pollen were studied to reveal the giant ape’s diet preference.
31. What can be suggested from Westaway’s words about the giant ape
A. The giant ape responded to the change of its habitat easily.
B. The inability to adapt quickly caused its disappearance.
C. The giant ape had sufficient food resources on the grassland.
D. The forested habitat was still accessible to the giant ape.
D
Nuclear bombs. That’s the go-to answer for incoming space objects like asteroids(小行星) and comets, as far as Hollywood is concerned. Movies like Deep Impact and Armageddon rely on nuclear weapons, delivered by stars like Bruce Willis, to save the world and deliver the drama.
But planetary defense experts say in reality, if astronomers spotted a dangerous incoming space rock, the safest and best answer might be something more subtle, like simply pushing it off course by crashing it with a small spacecraft.
That’s just what NASA did on Monday evening, when a spacecraft headed straight into an asteroid called Dimorphous, which is around 7 million miles away and poses no threat to Earth. It’s about 525 feet across and orbits another larger asteroid.
In images streamed as the impact neared, the egg-shaped asteroid grew in size from a little spot on screen to have its full rocky surface come quickly into focus before the signal went dead as the craft hit right on target.
Events happened exactly as engineers had planned, they said, with nothing going wrong. “As far as we can tell, our first planetary defense test was a success,” said Elena Adams, the mission systems engineer, who added that scientists looked on with “both terror and joy” as the spacecraft neared its final destination.
The impact was the peak of NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) ,a 7-year and more than $300 million effort which launched a space vehicle in November of 2021 to perform humanity’s first ever test of planetary defense technology. It will be about two months, scientists said, before they will be able to determine if the impact was enough to drive the asteroid slightly off course, probably shortening its original orbit.
NASA plans to launch an asteroid-hunting space telescope named NEO Surveyor in 2026. “We’ve tacked lots of space rocks, especially the larger ones that could cause extinction-level events. Thankfully, none currently threaten Earth. But many asteroids the size of Dimorphous haven’t yet been discovered, and those could potentially take out a city if they came crashing down. ” explains Lindley Johnson, NASA’s Planetary Defense Officer.
32. How did scientists know the craft hit the asteroid successfully
A The signal from the craft was lost as it hit the target.
B. They recorded the whole process with a telescope.
C. The little spot on the screen suddenly disappeared.
D. They monitored the craft with satellites in space.
33. What is the purpose of launching the spacecraft
A. To search for evidence of alien life.
B. To end the asteroid’s threat to Earth.
C. To save the world and deliver a drama.
D. To test technology for defending Earth.
34. What can be inferred about Dimorphous
A. It is a dangerous incoming space rock.
B. It is an egg-shaped asteroid around Earth.
C. It may orbit the same asteroid after the hit.
D. It is expected to blow up after the impact.
35. Which statement will Lindley Johnson probably agree with
A. Asteroids are equally destructive whatever the size.
B. NEO Surveyor is aimed to track smaller asteroids.
C. Larger asteroids will no longer threaten Earth.
D. NASA is responsible for the safety of Earth.

Lena could clearly remember the night she had to flee her home in Hungary. It was the beginning of the Second World War and her family needed to escape fast. She quickly packed a suitcase with a few pieces of clothing, her diary, and-her most prized possession - a beautiful silk scarf. Lena and her best friend, Monika, had persuaded their parents to buy them matching scarves, which they each wore tied around their neck as a symbol of their friendship. Lena had no idea that when she left for America that night, she would never return. Her family settled on the sunny west coast in California.
Lena kept that special silk scarf for many years. One day she decided to give it to her granddaughter, Eliza, to wear to her first job interview for good luck. Lena was afraid that Eliza would lose the scarf, but her granddaughter reassured her, “Don’t worry, Grandma nothing’s going to happen to your scarf. You’ll see, it is going to bring both of us luck today.” With that, Eliza kissed her grandmother on the cheek and left.
That afternoon, Eliza left the interview feeling confident that she had got the job---She decided to celebrate by going to a restaurant. As she sat at her table, she felt someone staring at her.
Sitting next to her was an elderly woman who could not take her eyes off her. “I’m sorry, do I know you ” Eliza asked.
“I’m sorry, dear, but you remind me of someone I once knew,” the old woman replied in an accented voice. “My best friend looked like you and used to wear a scarf just like the one you’re wearing around your neck.” Eliza felt goose bumps go up her arms.
