I learned all the 37 : how to camp in the snow, how to pull a sled and what clothing to wear. In October, I flew to Antarctica from Punta Arenas. I’d allowed 70 days, which would make it the longest 38 one-way expedition across Antarctica
I only took 39 . I didn’t even take a hairbrush. The first few days were 40 . The winds were about 60 mph, and my sled weighed 120 kg. Even if the visibility is good, you can’t 41 much — it’s a white horizon. I was on the move for 13 to 15 hours a day.
Then, I found the conditions to be much worse. There was more sastrugi (雪脊) and it felt colder. The last 40 hours were really hard. I 42 about 14 times every two hours. As a result, I fell behind 43 . In the end, I 44 922 miles and fell more than 100 miles short of my goal. Towards the end of my trip, a helicopter flew to pick me up. The 45 I felt when I saw the dot in the distance was unbelievable.
It took me a while to be 46 of what I’d achieved, because I had failed to reach my 47 goal, but I’ve learned it’s 48 to move the goalposts. I don’t agree with the idea of conquering (征服) somewhere. You treat places with 49 and hope they’ll allow you 50 passage.

My phone was an extension of myself. I couldn’t go anywhere 141 it. I scrolled through my friends’ 142 into late night and turned my phone on before my eyes were fully open. I enjoyed having it until that day when I realized that what had started as a useful tool had turned into a(n) 143 . So, I made a 144 decision to turn off that smartphone and 145 my old dumb phone out of hiding.
When I was watching TV shows or movies and there was a boring part, I 146 picking up the phone and checking out “what everyone else was doing.” Now I had to pay attention or find a way to 147 myself with my thoughts instead. When I visited New York City, I had to write out 148 and ask people where an intersection (十字路口) was 149 pulling out my phone.
I have welcomed silence into my life with open arms and am enjoying the increased 150 from not constantly having to fight with the 151 to check my phone while I’m trying to get something done. I am allowing my thoughts to speak to me instead of my phone. I am connecting with others in a 152 way that isn’t all about me. Instead of always posting about what’s going on in my 153 perfect life, I am connecting with my friends one-on-one, talking about the reality of our lives and being there for them from a place of 154 .
As much as having a smartphone was 155 , not having one is freeing on a much bigger level.
