Two little birds were happily sitting on the rock, just having finished their lunch. Their parents had allowed them, for the first time, to go and hunt for their lunch by themselves. And they had enjoyed every bit of the freedom.
Suddenly, a net came and fell on both. They struggled to pass through it but in vain. Two boys jumped down from the branch above them. They quickly gathered the net. One of the boys, Eric, shouted to his little brother Max. “We have finally succeeded after ten days of waiting.”
“Yes, what luck! They look much more beautiful than ordinary birds. Let’s go home and put them in our cage,” Eric said joyfully. They ran home with the birds.
The two little birds were terribly frightened. They thought of their mother who must be anxiously waiting for them.
When the two boys got to the house gate, the sweet smell came out of the kitchen. Their mother Amla was baking cakes, which were what the boys couldn’t live without.
Hearing the boys’ footsteps, Amla anxiously asked, “Where have you been I was getting worried. I’m cooking your favorite cakes.”
“Look, Mom, we have caught two beautiful birds! We are going to cage them. They will play with us.” Max proudly showed them to Amla.
Seeing the young birds shivering (发抖) in the boys’ hands, Amla said, “They are indeed beautiful. But they are so young and look so scared! They need their mother. Set them free.”
The boys said, “We will look after them.” Amla insisted that they shouldn’t keep them. They turned to their father John for help. Similarly,” John said, “It is not good to cage these birds. We should not take away their freedom.”
The boys were in tears and begged, “We love them so much. Please let us keep then.” “Well, just put them in the cage for the time being. Let’s enjoy your favorite cakes.” The boys jumped with joy. In the evening, John said to Amla, “The birds look very rare. We’d better do some research. Maybe we should call the police first.”

【答案】
The boys woke up only to find a note, “Mom and Dad go to the police station.” The two boys grew anxious. Max started crying, “Are Dad and Mom safe ” Eric tried to comfort Max by asking his brother to play with the birds. They fed the birds, which refused to eat, looking unhappy. How they wished their parents were at home! It was lunch time. Max and Eric were very hungry, but their parents didn’t show up. They missed their Mom and Mom’s cakes so much that they realized they couldn’t live without Mom.
Just then Dad and Mom returned. On seeing them, the boys asked, “Why did you see the police ” John said, “We told them about the birds. They got in touch with a bird expert, who said the birds you cage are of a rare species. The best place for them is the nature. Besides, the little ones need to be with their parents.” Feeling ashamed, the boys said, “We understand now. It is not right to cage the small birds and make them stay away from home. We’ll set them free. But, Mom, will you bake us cakes first We are so hungry!” “Sure!” Mom hugged them lovingly.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I drove to Yosemite Valley, California, for the first time in years. This was the first time I’d traveled to the valley by myself. I connected with my friends and found out about Facelift, a project started by a rock climber, Ken Yager. The goal was to spend a week volunteering to clean up trash in Yosemite Valley.
Thankfully, Yosemite Valley only has one or two roads, so it was impossible for me to stay lost for long. I pulled into Yellow Pine, the campground set aside for volunteers at the event.
I felt shy and insecure as a new comer. When I found the Group camp area, I saw eight event coordinators (协调者) I’d been talking with recently but had never met. These were outdoor people. I found a campsite, parked, got out, and walked over and introduced myself. They were nice.
The week turned into a wonderful learning experience. Meeting new people was a bonus. A few became forever friends. But the nights were really hard! I was alone in my tent in the thick, black forest. There were absolutely no lights. I rarely slept. A ranger (护林员) warned us about recent bear activity in our campground. A mother bear and her cub had been spotted wandering around during the day. The ranger explained that bears with cubs are especially dangerous. Great information, I thought. What should I do with it I knew, my fear doubled.
Each night, I wrapped the band of my headlamp around my wrist so I could instantly turn on its bright light. I placed a couple of metal pots by my sleeping bag to make noise if I heard anything. I lay awake most of the night staring at the tent door to see if it moved.
The week flew by. I enjoyed every part of it, except for the sleepless nights. My daughter Leah joined me on the last day. We would drive together back home.

【答案】
Leah asked how I did camping alone for the first time. I said I’d remembered much from my outdoorsy past, but the nights were hard, really hard. I told her about the terror each night would bring. How I rarely slept, watching the door of the tent to see if a bear would break in. All night, I would watch that door, listening to any slight sound or movement, dozing only briefly and then waking with a start at the slightest noise. I told her about the headlamp, and the pots and pans.
After I finished, Leah gave me a funny look. Then, there was dead silence for a while. I could tell she was thinking. Finally, with hesitation, she said, “Uh, you know, Mom, bears don’t really know where the door in a tent is once it’s closed and zipped up.” I thought for a moment, putting everything she said in place, and then started laughing happily. The entire week, while I was watching the door, a bear could have tear the thin tent wall right behind my head or the wall right next to my sleeping bag. I felt like such a fool.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My mother was a supporter of physical punishment, but for all her talking she has never spanked (打屁股) my siblings and me only once. Instead, she found ways of punishment that left a more lasting memory than giving us a spanking. One of the most memorable of these occasions occurred when I was four.
In the early 70’s my mother attended college during the day and I was in daycare. One day at daycare I watched an extremely tired mother attempt to pick up her daughter. The little girl asked, “Momma, are we going to McDonald’s for dinner ” The mother replied, “Honey, not tonight. Momma has to run a few errands (差事) and then we have to go home and cook dinner for Daddy.” “But I wanna go.” “Susie, I said not tonight. Maybe, if you are a good girl, we can go tomorrow.” Susie immediately dropped to the floor, kicking and screaming, “I want to go to McDonald’s.”
No amount of pleading (恳求) or scolding, her mother tried stopped Susie’s tantrum (发脾气). Finally her mother gave in, “Okay, Susie, let’s go to McDonald’s.” Susie stopped yelling and smiling she grabbed her mother’s hand and they left. To say I was amazed would be inaccurate; I was delighted that anything I wanted could be had by throwing a tantrum.
That day my mother picked me up early from daycare because we were going to a store to purchase some Christmas items. I was excited by the lights and decorations, and as we walked through the toy section on the way to the counter, I saw a toy I had to have. It was a white and red telephone whose bells rang as it was pulled along on a string. Looking lovingly up at my mother I asked, “Mama, can I have that telephone ”
She replied, “Baby, not now, but if you are a good girl, maybe Santa will bring it to you.” “But Mama, I want that telephone right now.” Her eyes narrowed and her hand tightened on mine. “Becky, you can’t have that telephone today, but if you misbehave, you can have a spanking.”

【答案】Paragraph 1:
By now we were standing in the long holiday line to pay the bill, and I figured it was a good chance. I lay down on the ground and began screaming, “I want that telephone,” over and over again. Weary Christmas shoppers looked as my mother calmly said, “Becky, you had better get up by the count of three or else... One... Two... Three.” Nothing. I was still in full tantrum. So then she lay down beside me on the floor, and began kicking and screaming, “I want a new car. I want a new house. I want some jewelry. I want...” Shocked, I stood up.
Paragraph 2:
“Mama, stop. Mama, get up,” I tearfully pleaded. She stood, and brushed herself off. At first stunned, the others waiting in line began to clap, and before I knew it they were cheering and laughing and patting my mother on her back. She blushed and took a little bow and the next thirty minutes in line was pure misery for me as various parents leaving the store, shake their heads at me and say with a smile, “Your momma got you good. I bet you’ll never try that again.” And I didn’t, because it left a lasting mental picture more effective than any physical mark. Mom didn't give me any punishment but I did learn something.

Lisa checked the words on her spelling test again and again. If she got full marks today, she would win her class’ Spelling Challenge and a prize, a series of books that she had longed for. Plus, Mr. Matt had promised to sing a song in front of the whole class if anyone got a perfect score.
Three more words to go. N-i-c-e-l-y. Q-u-i-c-k-l-y. H-o-n-e-s-t-y. Wait! She’d spelled honesty, not honestly! She erased “-ty” and wrote “-ly” before handing in her paper. Mr. Matt graded the papers while the students were at rest.
After a break, Lisa hurried into the classroom, sitting in her seat nervously-Mr. Matt walked to the front of the room and cleared his throat. “Congratulations, Lisa! You did it!” Then, he kept his promise and began to sing. He sang so well that the whole class erupted!
Mr. Matt presented Lisa with her prize. A big smile spread across Lisa’s face as she read the label on the books: To Lisa, for her perfect score in spelling.
As Lisa burst through the front door afterschool, Mom asked, “Everything OK ”
“Everything’s perfect!” Lisa shouted, showing Mom her spelling test and prize.
Mom hugged her. “Well done, Lisa”
Lisa scooped up(抱起) her cat. “Can you spell nicely, Casper And quickly and honestly, and...” It suddenly occurred to her that she had misspelled the word. Rooted to the spot, Lisa reflected on how she could tell the whole class she shouldn’t have earned the prize at all. She dashed into her room and pulled out the test paper. “If I put the missing’t’ back in, no one would ever know,” she thought. Recalling the joyful moment, a mixture of guilt and unwillingness overwhelmed her.

Aware that there was something wrong with Lisa, Mom knocked on the door and entered her room. “Where’s your spelling test paper, sweetheart ” Mom asked, gazing at her eagerly. Lisa took out the paper and handed it unwillingly to her mom. When Mom spotted “honesly”, Mom frowned, “Probably you don’t deserve the prize.” After thinking for a while, she soon understood what she should do.
The next day, arriving early at school, Magen pushed open the door of Mr. Matt’s office. Hands slightly trembling, Lisa gave Mr. Matt her test paper and the books. Lisa confessed her spelling mistake in the test, a pink flush spreading over her cheeks. “I see.” Even though Mr. Matt tried to contain her emotions, surprise registered on her face. Then she picked up a pen, crossed out the word “perfect” and wrote “honest” instead before handing the prize back to Lisa. Lisa ’s jaw dropped. Mr. Matt grinned. “For honesty.”

I’ve been a leader of a youth group in my community for a number of years. Among all those organized group activities, the kids’ favorite is called ARK night, with ARK standing for Acts of Random Kindness. A couple of times a year, on a Sunday night, we go out into our community to perform kind acts for others.
We split into small groups and complete assignments around town. One group typically goes downtown to where the homeless population is gathered and hands out sandwiches and cold water in the summer, and hand warmers and hot bread in the winter. Sometimes a group makes posters and goes to local police and fire stations to say thank you. We often have groups that visit nursing homes and hospitals to share a smile and conversation with the patients.
One time, the small group I was leading left Post-it notes with positive messages on the windshields (挡风玻璃) of all of the vehicles in the visitors’ parking lot at the hospital. The hope was that someone who was sad or worn out after visiting a patient would be cheered up by our note.
We had spent the first part of the evening in my home, with the kids writing positive messages on their Positive notes, things like “Tomorrow is another day.” “Keep smiling.” “Things will get better.” and “Have a nice day.” One girl had curvy, beautiful handwriting and she decorated the corners of her notes with pretty multi-colored hearts.
After the kids left their notes on all those cars, one girl said to me, “We didn’t see one single person. How will we know that our notes made a difference ”
“We’ll just have to trust that they did,” I said. Normally, the kids could see the reactions of the people they were helping, and I could tell they were disappointed at the lack of interaction with people during this assignment. I wondered about it, too. Would the notes cheer anyone up, or would they be thrown away like the advertisements that are sometimes left on car windshields

【答案】
One day, I noticed a post by a friend of mine on Facebook. She described a series of unpleasant things that had happened to her over the weekend. “But then,” she added, “I was hurrying to work this morning and stopped quickly in front of the bank to draw money. There, on the side of the ATM was the nicest little note. It made my day.” She included a photo of the note.
It was one of our Post-it notes. I recognized it immediately from the little heart on the corner. I have no idea how that note traveled from the hospital across town to the bank, but I’m pretty sure that it must have encouraged some strangers. Knowing that what we did was meaningful, I was overwhelmed with joy. I “liked” her post and couldn’t wait to share this warm story with kids in my group. Small kindness did matter and we would definitely continue with our ARK activity. Maybe more frequently.

Green Thumb
All I did was show my little sister how to grow plants. Dig a hole. Put in a seed. Cover it with dirt. Water it. Wait. “See, Laynie,” I explained, “a whole plant will grow from this tiny seed. All we have to do is water it.”
Laynie had her own watering can so she could “help” me in the garden. One day, after everything was watered, she ran to the fence and started sprinkling water on another spot. I walked over and saw a fresh patch of dirt near the fence.
“Did you plant something there ” I asked.
“Yes,” she said. “I’m growing a pencil. My purple pencil got too small, so I planted it.”
“What But, Laynie—”
I should have explained things right then, but I just muttered, “Uh…I never grew one before.”
Later I got what seemed like a great idea. I dug up Laynie’s pencil and “planted” a brand-new purple pencil. Laynie was really excited when she saw it. “My pencil grew!” she shouted.
A few days later, Laynie was watering on the same spot. Two days later, new crayons sticking their pointy little heads out, thanks to me. Laynie jumped up and down and yelled, “They look like flowers!” She “picked” them and ran into the house.
Next, Laynie grew an adult bear doll from a tiny one, a soup spoon from a teaspoon, and a hand mirror from a piece of glass. When she claimed that she had grown these things, I just kept my mouth shut! Actually, it was fun trying to think of what should grow from Laynie’s seeds. And it was cool to see her get excited.
One day I saw her patting down some dirt near the fence again, so I knew she’d just planted something. My heart dropped to my feet when she asked, “How long does it take to grow a goldfish, Brad ” I couldn’t speak.
“Not long, I bet!” said Laynie. She knelt down to whisper “Grow, Molly. Grow!” before she skipped back to the house.

【答案】
I sat down with my back to the fence and thought for a long time. Sighing, I decided there was only one right thing to do. I got up, took some things from the shed, and went inside. When I displayed the short pencil, the crayons, the teaspoon... on the table, Laynie was dumbfounded. Then I explained how I’d dug up and replaced all of her things. “No!” she screamed, red-faced. With a big shove, she knocked everything off the table. “Laynie,” I swallowed hard and added, “Molly isn’t going to grow either.” At this, she burst into tears and ran off. The heart pierced with guilt, I felt like a worm.
Later I found Laynie silting by the spot where Molly was buried. I sat down beside her, gently held her in my embrace and apologized. Laynie turned her face away. I went on, ‘‘See, you can grow things from seeds—not from pencils or... dead things. OK ” “Just seeds ” she asked, face still tear-stained. I nodded. She looked at me for a minute as if thinking about something. Later that day, after we had a funeral for Molly, I saw Laynie patting down some dirt on Molly’s grave. My heart tightened. “I’m growing some forget-me-nots, so Molly won’t forget me,” she said. This time, I thought “the green thumb” would have a real harvest.

There is a story from many years ago of a primary school teacher. Her name was Rose.
On the first day of school, as Rose looked out over her new fifth grade class, her attention was immediately drawn to two boys, Mark and Charlie. Mark had a high energy that filled the room, his voice echoing even in casual conversations. He laughed loudest and answered questions with enthusiasm that was impossible to ignore. Charlie, Mark’s partner-in-crime, had a naughty grin and a twinkle in his eyes. Together, they were perfect.
While Mark would com mand attention with his tales, Charlie would comment cleverly, making the whole class burst into laughter. Rose could already tell that these two would keep her on her toes. She smiled to herself, though, ready for an eventful year ahead. She knew she had to find a way to channel their energy positively, turning their enthusiasm into a driving force for learning.
One day, Rose had a unique assignment for her students. She asked them to list each classmate's name on two sheets, leaving gaps between. Next, she instructed them to write down the nicest thing they could think of for each student. The assignment consumed the whole period. As they left, each student handed in their papers.
Over the weekend, Rose wrote down the name of each student on a separate sheet of paper, creating individual lists for every student. On Monday, she handed out the lists. Soon, happiness spread across the room. Mark, known for his naughty behavior, looked astonished. “I had no idea I mattered to anyone,” he whispered, visibly moved. Beside him, Charlie, Mark’s partner- in-crime, said similarly.“I never realized others thought so highly of me.”
No one ever mentioned those lists in class again. Rose never found out if they discussed them after class or with their parents, but it didn't matter.

【答案】
The atmosphere in the classroom shifted, especially Mark and Charlie. Mark started setting up study groups, and even volunteered to organize school events, where he was busy seeking opinions and looking up for guidance. Charlie, on the other hand, emerged as a thoughtful contributor in discussions, revealing insights that often left the class in awe. Their transformation was evident not only in their academic performance but also in their interactions. The mischievous duo, once the source of relentless energy and disruption, began to channel their enthusiasm into constructive outlets. The list had served as a mirror, reflecting the positive qualities others saw in them, qualities they had previously been unaware of.
On a bright afternoon years later, two gentlemen knocked at Rose’s door, holding the lists. Rose, a bit puzzled, opened the door to see two familiar faces, now grown and matured. It was Mark and Charlie. “Miss Rose,” Mark began, his voice still holding that trace of energy she remembered, “we wanted to thank you personally.” He held up the aged list, edges frayed but words still clear.Charlie continued, “These lists were a turning point for us. Knowing we mattered, and that we had value in others’eyes changed our paths.” Seeing the profound impact a simple classroom activity had left on them, Rose smiled.

When Marco was a boy, he tried everything to get his father’s love and attention. He worked hard to earn exceptional marks and always tried to behave well. But he was so sensitive and shy that he always hid behind his hair, which he wore long around his face. To make it worse, Marco was naturally shorter than the other kids. This added to his already low self-confidence.
At 14, he and his younger sister Sandra moved in with their dad and his new wife. His father was busy and their communication was nonexistent. The only time his dad ever spoke to him was to be demanding or critical. He began to fear coming home from school every day, feeling desperately alone and isolated.
One day his father, tripped over Marco’s bike in the garage. The angry reaction left Marco in despair, thus crying out, “That’s it! I’m going to kill myself.”
“You don’t even have the guts!” replied his father.
For two days, all Marco could think of was wanting to die, but he didn’t want to prove his father was right. Angry and sad, Marco was stuck.
Two days later, his aunt called him. This seemed like a miracle. Aunt Ginette usually only called on his birthday. She said she had just seen some young teenagers participate in a public speaking contest and she thought about him. She told him she firmly believed he could perform on stage like those kids, since she had seen him do skits (幽默短剧) for the family at Christmas.
Marco was shocked. Him In a public speaking contest, which was contrary to his shy personality But Aunt Ginette was sure it was something he could do. Feeling her strong belief, Marco agreed.
All that winter, twice a week after dinner, he took three different buses in each direction for the three-hour round-trip to practice in the place where the competition would take place. Marco was taken by a feeling he never felt before. The hours and the obstacles no longer counted. The criticism from his father around his absence for after-dinner chores didn’t matter.

【答案】
Four months later, the big night arrived. His family members were all in the audience. The nine other contestants were all older than him. Marco was overwhelmed-the whole thing just felt so much bigger than him, and butterflies filled his stomach. But when he stepped onto the stage and began to speak, he felt totally at home, totally at peace, and a kind of bliss stole over him. He was funny, witty and acted extremely natural as he spoke. The audience loved him, offering thunderous applause from time to time! He felt energized and very alive-it felt like a real birth. To his amazement and delight, he won!
With the championship, Marco’s new life started. His long hair was never seen. His self-esteem and self-confidence started to grow. Not only did he regain his hope for life, but he also came to realize he deserved to be happy and respected. Love and attention from his father was solid evidence of that. He even started giving speeches based on his own life to inspire others to be brave and confident. That contest was a truly defining moment in his life. It all happened because of a single phone call, from one single person who simply believed in him. Such confidence in Marco did make a big difference.

“What if the tent falls over and kills us What if the wind blows the tent away What if a wolf comes into the tent and eats us ... ,”he kept asking his father silly questions.
“Perhaps, you have read too many stories with big bad wolves,” his father replied, laughing. “There aren’t any wolves in the city or even in the whole country, except in zoos.”
“Well, what if one escaped from a zoo ” Billy insisted.

Then the sleeping bags, blankets and more. When everything was packed, his father started the car. Soon they were leaving the city behind them.
“Look at the cows!” shouted his mother excitedly when they were arriving at the campsite, which belonged to a farm and was in a big field. “They are eating the grass!”
Once the tent was set up, Billy went to explore. There were trees to climb and a stream for catching insects and fish. The day flew by and it was getting dark.
As they got inside the tent and were ready for sleep, strange noises kept coming from the distance.
“What’s that noise Is it a wolf approaching ” Billy asked his mother and moved closer to her.

The Price of a Dream
I grew up in a poor family with six brothers, three sisters--a group of foster kids, my father and my wonderful mother. My parents worked day and night to keep a roof over our heads and food on our table. It's true that we had little money and few goods, but we got plenty of love and attention. I was very happy and energetic. I understood that no matter how poor a person was, he could still afford a dream.
My dream was athletics. I fell in love with baseball at an early age, a love so deep that I almost gave it my all. I practiced hard every day and that made me a little closer to my dream. By the time I was sixteen, I had made great progress: I could throw a ninety-mile-per-hour fast ball and hit anything that moved on the field. I was also lucky: my high school coach was Ollie Jarvis, who not only believed in me, but also taught me how to believe in myself. One particular incident (事件) with my coach Ollie Jarvis changed my life forever.
It was the summer holiday in Senior 2 and one of my friends recommended me for a summer job. This meant a chance for money in my pocket — certainly, money for a new bike and new clothes, and I could also begin to save money for a house for my mother, which was what I had always dreamed of. The prospect (前景) of this summer job was attractive and I wanted to jump at this chance. Then it hit me that I would have to give up summer baseball training to deal with the work schedule. I was afraid of telling my coach, who would certainly be against my plan. I hesitated for several days. At last, I spurred (给……打气) myself with the advice my mother often gave us, "If you make your bed, you have to lie in it." I made up my mind.
Paragraph1:
When I told my coach Ollie Jarvis, he was as angry as I expected him to be.

Paragraph2:
“Well,” he asked, “is $3.5 an hour from the summer job the price of a dream ”

【答案】Paragraph1:
When I told my coach Ollie Jarvis, he was as angry as I expected him to be. “You have your whole life to work,” he said, with a serious look on his face, “but your playing days are limited. You can’t afford to waste them.” I stood before him with my head hanging, trying to think of the words that would explain to him why my dream of buying my mother a house was worth facing his disappointment. “How much are you going to make at this summer job, son ” he demanded. “$ 3.5 per hour,” I replied in a low voice.
Paragraph2:
“Well,” he asked, “is $ 3.5 an hour from the summer job the price of a dream ” That simple question set me thinking. It made me understand the difference between wanting something right now and having a long-term goal. Determined to put all my heart into baseball, I promised the coach that I would give up the job. That summer, I dedicated myself to baseball training, and the next year, I was given a baseball scholarship to a university. Finally, I signed with a famous team for $ 1.7 million, and certainly bought my mother the house of my dream.

Billy was a six-year-old boy. He was very excited but was a little nervous about his first camping trip with his parents.
“Zoos were careful enough not to let their animals escape,” his father comforted Billy.
Billy soon forgot about wolves as they started preparing for the camping trip. Billy helped his father load up the car. They put in the tent, a big one for the whole family.
“Maybe it’s just the wind,” said his mother, who patted Billy sleepily.
Billy didn’t say anything and made himself into his sleeping bag. After a long day outdoors, his father and mother were very tired and fell asleep soon.

“Well,” he asked, “is $3.5 an hour from the summer job the price of a dream ”
