2. 过去一段时间正在进行的动作
常与the whole day, all day yesterday等时间状语连用。有时没有明显的时间状语，可根据上下文语境判断。
Miss Li was shopping at this time yesterday.
I was looking for my lost cat at nine last Monday morning.
1. 过去某一时刻正在进行的动作
与表示过去某一时间点的时间状语连用，如at 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon, at this/that time yesterday等。
过去进行时:
Miss Li was shopping at this time yesterday.
I was looking for my lost cat at nine last Monday morning.
时间状语：
1.过去某一时间点

1. 肯定句：主语+was/were + doing
We were having supper at 7:00 p.m.
2. 否定句：主语+was/were not +doing

Were you playing basketball at four yesterday afternoon
答语：Yes, 主语+was/were.
或No, 主语+wasn't/weren’t .
4.特殊疑问句：疑问词+was/were+主语+doing

过去进行时和一般过去时的区别
1) 过去进行时表示过去正在进行的动作,
2） 一般过去时表示过去某个时间发生过的动作。
如：
David wrote a letter to his friend last night.
大卫昨晚给他的朋友写了封信。(信写完了。)
David was writing a letter to his friend last night.
大卫昨晚一直在给他的朋友写信。(信不一定写完。)

区分 when 与while
(1) “当……的时候”,while仅指“一段时间”，引导的从句多用多用过去进行式；when既可指一段时间，也可指“瞬间时间”，引导从句多用一般过去式。
e.g. I was watching TV when she came into my room .
= While I was watching TV, she came into my room .
(2) 如果while前后的动词都是进行时态,while可译为“与此同时”。
e.g. I was reading while my brother was drawing.
(3) 当while前后的句子描述的情况相反时, while译为“而”。
1. While John was taking photos, Mary bought a drink.
John was taking photos when Mary bought a drink.
2. While John was playing the piano, Mary left the house.
John was playing the piano when Mary left the house.
3. While John was cleaning his room, Mary turned on the radio.
John was cleaning his room when Mary turned on the radio.
