“Colour”and“color”,“favourite”and“favorite”,“honour”and“honor”…Have you ever wondered why Americans spell those words without a“u”?Is it because they are lazy?Of course not. In fact, the difference in spelling was started by Noah Webster(1758-1843). He was a teacher who reformed(改革)English to make American identity(特征)stronger. Linguists(语言学家)celebrate his birthday on October 16 every year.
C
第二部分 Part 2
After the Revolutionary War(1775-1783),Webster believed that Americans should have their own dictionary, rather than rely on British dictionaries. He dropped the British“u”in some words. And he changed “centre” into“center”for children to learn English by spelling words more like what they sounded. He used “subway” instead of British word“underground”. Some other examples are“soccer”and“football”,“fall” and “autumn”.
第二部分 Part 2
Webster wasn’t shy about expressing his opinions. In defining(定义)preposterous(unreasonable),he wrote: “A republican government in the hands of female is preposterous. ”
Webster spent 28 years on the project before completing the 70,000-word dictionary with his American-style spelling in 1828. He also added local words.
His dictionary was widely used in schools. Linguists believed it helped a new country achieve unity(统一)and cultural independence at a time when most people cared about political freedom.

In spite of“endless talk of difference”,American society is an amazing machine for homogenizing people. This includes the uniformity in clothing and communication,as well as the casualness and lack of respect seen in popular culture. People are absorbed into“a culture of consumption”launched by the 19th-century department stores that offered a wide range of goods in an elegant atmosphere. Instead of fancy shops catering to the upper-class,these were stores“anyone could enter, regardless of class or background. ”This turned shopping into a public and democratic(民主的)act. The mass media, advertising and sports are other forces for homogenization.
D
第二部分 Part 2
Immigrants are quickly adapting to this common culture, which may not be altogether elevating but is hardly poisonous. Writing for the National Immigration Forum,Gregory Rodriguez reports that today’s immigration is neither at remarkable levels nor resistant to assimilation(融合). In 1998 immigrants were 9. 8 percent of population ; in 1900,13. 6 percent. In the 10 years prior to 1990,3. 1 immigrants arrived for every 1,000 residents;in the 10 years prior to 1890,9. 2 for every 1,000. Now,consider three indicators of assimilation—language, home ownership and intermarriage.
第二部分 Part 2
The 1990 Census revealed that“a majority of immigrants from each of the fifteen most common countries of origin spoke English ‘well’or‘very well’after ten years of residence. ”The children of immigrants tend to be bilingual(双语的)and good at English. “By the third generation, the original language is lost in the majority of immigrant families. ”Hence,America is described as a“graveyard”for languages. By 1996 foreign-born immigrants who had arrived before 1970 had a home ownership rate of 75. 6 percent, higher than the 69. 8 percent rate among native-born Americans. Foreign-born Asians and Hispanics“have higher rates of intermarriage than do U. S. -born whites and blacks. ”By the third generation, one third of Hispanic women are married to non-Hispanics,and 41 percent of Asian-American women are married to non-Asians.
第二部分 Part 2
Rodriguez notes that children in remote villages around the world are fans of superstars like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Garth Brooks, yet“some Americans fear that immigrants living within the United States are not influenced by the nation’s assimilative power. ”
Are there divisive issues and anger in America?Indeed. It is big enough to have a bit of everything. But particularly when viewed against America’s troubled past, today’s social Indicators hardly suggest a dark and worsening social environment.

“Walk faster!”Brandon shouted annoyingly to his camping partner,Tim. Tim struggled to keep pace with Brandon, who was metres in front of him. The scout(童子军)teacher,Mr. Tan,had paired both of them up together for that week’s camp adventure. Tim was excited to have an experienced camper while his partner,Brandon,on the other hand, felt that Tim was just a newbie who knew nothing.

Brandon was indeed an excellent scout who took to the various skills taught like a duck to water. However,in class, his attitude was beyond terrible. He was rude to his teachers and seldom handed in his homework on time. During his co-curricular(辅助课程)activity,the Scouts, his work was much better. However, his attitude remained the same. Brandon always treated his fellow scouts as if they were good-for-nothings. Thinking that he was better than the others,he always acted rudely in front of them. Tim,who just joined the Scouts, received the same treatment.
第四部分 Part 4
“Hey,Brandon! Please wait for me!”Tim begged. Rolling his eyes,Brandon stood on the rock with his arms folded, laughing at the attempts of his partner to cross the rock below him. Brandon soon realized that Tim wasn’t going to make it alone. With all his might,Brandon pulled Tim up and continued on his tracks. Tim felt a sense of gratitude towards Brandon’s action. Quickening his footsteps,he caught up with Brandon and both of them headed for the campsite that Mr. Tan had assigned to each group.
第四部分 Part 4
The sky grew darker and nighttime came closer. The path ahead of them grew unclear. Suddenly,Brandon slipped on a rock and fell down into some deep undergrowth(灌木丛)of the forest after managing a loud cry. Brandon only managed to reply with a painful cry. Reassured that Brandon was conscious,Tim started screaming for help. Thankfully, both of them were near the campsite. The consistent screaming and shouting from Tim attracted the attention of Mr. Tan and the fellow scouts. When all of them arrived, they took out the ropes used for securing the tents and started tying them together, forming a rope long enough to reach Brandon.
第四部分 Part 4
Pulling together,it was not long before an injured and relieved Brandon appeared at the top of the hillside.
The scouts cheered and gave one another congratulatory high-fives. Brandon thanked everyone for their rescue gratefully. He even smiled weakly at Tim before being taken to the hospital. After that incident,Brandon was a totally changed boy. He understood the importance of teamwork and no longer rejected the idea of working and helping his friends. He changed his attitude dramatically and was even asked to become the leader of the scouts.

Sharon,Aged 22
The most important thing to keep in mind when going into high school is to be yourself. Besides,I don’t know what your middle school was like, but high school teachers will not care about things such as how much homework you already have for one night. It’s best to just learn to deal with things and manage your time wisely so you can achieve everything you need to do.
Frank,Aged 21
I think almost every kid feels both anxious and excited before their first day. You will probably love it. I know I did. You should join in some sports or activities that will make your high school experience more enjoyable. Good luck!
David,Aged 19
I’m not going to lie. The first day is kind of frightening. But you’ll get used to it. Don’t be afraid of anyone;upperclassmen will pick on you more if you let them know you’re afraid. Just take it easy. Making some friends and staying with them will greatly help you get used to high school quickly. After the first week it’s really not bad at all. Don’t worry.
Eddie,Aged 20
When I started high school,I was really nervous too, especially since I had been homeschooled all through middle school and didn’t really know anyone. I suppose the best advice would be to just relax. The first couple of days can be a little bit hard, but things will become easier before you know it.

A.Teachers are quite strict. B.Students often stay up at night.

When Jack was about to start school, all signs pointed to success. However, things turned out to be quite disappointing. The fourth grade even found him at the bottom of the class. Jack struggled day and night, but it did not work—until one stormy afternoon.
On that afternoon,as the math teacher started to introduce difficult concepts(概念),dark clouds covered the sky,and the storm set in. Though she tried hard to make the kids concentrate, the thunder won the battle for their attention. No one grasped the concepts. Except for Jack. He understood them and answered all the questions correctly. The teacher patted him on the back, and told him to go around to the others and explain how he had managed it. Encouraged by his newfound success,Jack moved quickly throughout the room. Soon math time was followed by the time for art. All children naturally drew dark pictures on such a day. Except for Jack.
Since then,Jack started improving. Though he never made it to the top,his math teacher was always amazed and curious about the change:Why had that stormy day changed Jack?
On the day Jack graduated,he presented the teacher with his most precious possession—the picture of a bright yellow sun. On the picture Jack had written:This is the day I woke up to my brightness.

After the Revolutionary War(1775-1783),Webster believed that Americans should have their own dictionary, rather than rely on British dictionaries. He dropped the British“u”in some words. And he changed“centre”into“center”for children to learn English by spelling words more like what they sounded. He used“subway”instead of British word“underground”. Some other examples are“soccer”and“football”,“fall”and“autumn”.
Webster wasn’t shy about expressing his opinions. In defining(定义)preposterous(unreasonable),he wrote:“A republican government in the hands of female is preposterous.
“He was the creator of our language and the creator of American identity,”said Joshua Kendall, who is working on a book about Webster. “He at last brought us together through our language. ”
28.Which is NOT true about Webster’s dictionary?
A.It has local words in it. B.It is a 70,000-word dictionary.

B.It helped to bring Americans together besides its cultural influence.
C.It has no influence on the development of American English.
D.It helped to make American English more useful than British English.
31.What’s the main idea of the passage?
A.The development of the British English.
B.American English is better than British English.
C.Noah Webster added local words to the dictionary.
D.Noah Webster wrote an American English dictionary and reformed English.

Immigrants are quickly adapting to this common culture, which may not be altogether elevating but is hardly poisonous. Writing for the National Immigration Forum,Gregory Rodriguez reports that today’s immigration is neither at remarkable levels nor resistant to assimilation(融合). In 1998 immigrants were 9. 8 percent of population;in 1900,13. 6 percent. In the 10 years prior to 1990,3. 1 immigrants arrived for every 1,000 residents;in the 10 years prior to 1890,9. 2 for every 1,000. Now,consider three indicators of assimilation—language, home ownership and intermarriage.
The 1990 Census revealed that“a majority of immigrants from each of the fifteen most common countries of origin spoke English‘well’or‘very well’after ten years of residence.
32.The underlined phrase in paragraph 1 probably means________.
A.making people adapt to American consumption culture
B.encouraging people to embrace a democratic lifestyle
C.encouraging people to stick to their own ideas and principles
D.making people behave more similarly in many aspects
33.According to the passage, what can be inferred about the immigrants now in the U. S. ?
A.Their adaptation to the common culture is quick but harmful to the society.
B.The scale of immigration is not big and the immigrants welcome American culture.
C.Their children are good at both English and their original language.
D.Hispanic and Asian-American women both prefer to marry native-born Americans.
34.The author mentions Arnold Schwarzenegger and Garth Brooks in paragraph 4 to______.
A.provide examples of successful immigrants
B.suggest the weakness of America’s assimilative power
C.show the powerful influence of American culture
D.prove their popularity at home and abroad
35.What is the author’s general attitude towards the cultural assimilation in American society?
A.Optimistic. B.Concerned. C.Neutral. D.Negative.

Life isn’t fair. Some people just seem blessed with the ability to effortlessly charm(吸引)anyone they meet. Well,it might seem like a magical power, but in fact there are a number of factors at work.
36 The answer is:to a large extend yes you can.
But first, the bad news. People at first judge each other according to physical appearance. With just a glimpse of a face, people make quick judgements about each other’s likeability, trustworthiness and confidence. How should we deal with this? 37 People regard a smiling face as more trustworthy, warmer and sociable. It sounds like common sense, doesn’t it?Smile and others will smile with you.
What other tricks might we have? 38 Consequently, three things we can do to signal that we are not a threat are tor raise our eyebrows quickly raise our heads slightly, and once again,to smile.
So we’ve looked at body language, but of coarse what you say is hugely important loot unless you want to just stand there smiling foolishly. The golden rule of friendship is if you make people feel good about themselves, they’re going to like you. In other words, you should not talk about yourself and all your wonderful achievements. 39
Finally, finding common ground helps form a connection. Charming people are particularly skilled at seeking out shared interests or experiences to bond with others. 40 And if all else fails, you can fall back on that most British of topics:the weather. It can be a nice start of a conversation.
A.Instead, you need to show interest in them.
B.There’s one surprisingly simple tool:your smile.
C.So,can you learn to develop superhuman charm?
D.What good tricks can we employ to become charming?
E.Shared interests are the key to making connections with others.
F.Asking where someone’s from allows you to find areas in common.
G.Our brains often survey the environment for friend or enemy signals.

The sky grew darker and nighttime came closer. The path ahead of them grew unclear. Suddenly,Brandon slipped on a rock and fell down into some deep undergrowth(灌木丛)of the forest after managing a loud cry. Hearing that,Tim turned around only to realize that Brandon was deep in the undergrowth. Brandon landed with a huge impact that led to an intense pain in his kneecap. He realized that he had broken his knee.

1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
“Are you alright?”Tim asked in concern, looking carefully over the edge of the hillside. Pulling together,it was not long before an injured and relieved Brandon appeared at the top of the hillside.

On the other hand, I heard the environment is pleasant and the services are professional in the nursing home. I’m puzzled.
M: Well, let me tell you something about my mother. Three years ago when she was 57, she offered to go to the nursing home, which astonished us. Very soon we supported her decision and I realized why she did so. Elderly people easily become lonely.

In the 10 years prior to 1990, 3.1 immigrants arrived for every 1, 000 residents;in the 10 years prior to 1890, 9.2 for every 1, 000.(移民们正在很快迅速适应这种共同文化, 虽然这种文化可能不会引人向上, 但也不会毒害人们。Gregory Rodriguez为《国家移民论坛》撰写文章, 他在报道中指出, 如今移民既没有创新高, 也不抵制同化, 1998年移民占美国人口总数的9.8%, 而1990年移民人口所占比例是13.6%。1990年之前的10年里, 每1000名居民中就有3.1名移民抵达;在1890年之前的10年中, 每1000人中有9.2人)”和第三段中“The 1990 Census revealed that“a majority of immigrants from each of the fifteen most common countries of origin spoke English‘well’or‘very well’after ten years of residence.”(1990年的人口普查显示, “来自15个最常见的原籍国的大多数移民在居住10年后都能说‘好’或‘非常好’的英语。”)”可推知, 现在在美国的移民, 移民规模不大, 并且移民欢迎美国文化。故选B项。

The consistent screaming and shouting from Tim attracted the attention of Mr. Tan and the fellow scouts. When all of them arrived, they took out the ropes used for securing the tents and started tying them together, forming a rope long enough to reach Brandon.
Pulling together, it was not long before an injured and relieved Brandon appeared at the top of the hillside. The scouts cheered and gave one another congratulatory high-fives. Brandon thanked everyone for their rescue gratefully. He even smiled weakly at Tim before being taken to the hospital. After that incident, Brandon was a totally changed boy. He understood the importance of teamwork and no longer rejected the idea of working and helping his friends. He changed his attitude dramatically and was even asked to become the leader of the scouts.
