Lindsay couldn’t go to her gym after Beijing shut down indoor sports facilities in May because of a coronavirus outbreak. So she started cycling and soon fell in love with the sport. “I realized a racing bicycle was quite different from a regular bike,” she said. “It’s very fast and exciting, and I couldn’t stop anymore.”
Bicycles have long been a means of transport in China and once outnumbered cars on city streets. Now cycling is also increasingly seen as a sport by the urban middle class that has benefited from China’s growth into the world’s second largest economy. Biking events organized by Beijing cycling club Qiyi totaled about 10,000 participants over the past year, with about 50% of them regulars. Nationwide, at least 20 million people are participating in the sport, according to the Chinese Cycling Association.
The pandemic has played a role, with authorities moving quickly to close non-essential businesses, including gyms, during outbreaks under a strict zero-COVID approach. Cycling, which can be done individually as well as in groups, has largely been free from restrictions that limit gathering. For cyclist Yang Lan, the reason why she loves cycling is that the sport provides an escape from the daily life in the coronavirus era. “With the pandemic, it seems to be the only way for us to run away from the terrible city life and pace,” she said.
People will have more choices for sports and entertainment when the pandemic is over. But Feng Baozhong, the vice president of the Chinese Cycling Association says that he expects cycling to remain popular. Because it’s driven by China’s growing economy, growth of the sports industry and increasing concern about health due to COVID-19. “The pursuit of health will not disappear,” he said, “and the popularity of cycling is also a sign of the public’s awareness of environmental protection and pursuit of a low-carbon lifestyle.”
4.How many people in the Qiyi club take part in cycling activities regularly
A.More than 10,000. B.Around 10,000.
C.Around 5,000. D.Around 20,000,000.
5.Why does Yang Lan love cycling
A.She enjoys cycling alone.
B.She likes participating in cycling activities.
C.She can get a break from the city life.
D.She saves money by riding to work.
6.What can we infer from Paragraph 4
A.People are paying more attention to health issues.
B.China’s economy is getting worse due to the pandemic.
C.The sports industry is in crisis during the lockdown.
D.Other sports will replace cycling when the pandemic is over.
7.What is the most suitable title for the passage
A.Pandemic Harms Cycling B.Pandemic Fuels Cycling
C.Cycling Boosts Sports Industry D.Cycling Means a Low-carbon Lifestyle

At the beginning of Grade Two, I joined the cross-country running team in our school.
When I came to the first practice, I was filled with optimism. But as the distance we ran in each practice gradually increased from three to four, to six miles, I realized with surprise that no matter how hard I tried, I wasn’t able to run as fast as others. In fact, I was one of the slowest on the team.
What was the point of putting myself through so much pain After the first few weeks, I wanted to quit.
Then we had our first cross-country meet.
When we started the race, I felt the great pressure of expectations sink onto my shoulders. And after a while I stopped running and struggled to walk up the hill. But then I heard my coaches shouting my name from the top of the hill. I felt confused and embarrassed; why were they cheering for me I was running terribly! As I tried my best to finish the race, I realized that my coaches didn’t care how fast I ran. Neither did my teammates. During the rest of the season, they were always on the sidelines of every race, cheering for me just as loudly as they’d cheered for the front runner.
From then on, I began to put my effort into supporting my teammates instead of focusing on my own performance. In that way, I celebrated my teammates’ victories as if they were my own; I felt their pain and exhaustion as if they were my own.
Cross-country running made me realize I don’t need to be the best to be successful in life. It taught me to value my relationships with people more than my relationship with my ego. It taught me to cheer for others even if I don’t know their names.
8.Why did the author want to give up after the first few weeks
A. He had much pain in his knees.
B. He didn’t perform well in long-distance running.
C. He couldn’t get along well with others
D. He showed no interest in running.
9.Which of the following can best describe the coaches
A. Strict and hard-hearted. B. Brave and adventurous.
C. Considerate and supportive. D. Optimistic and humorous.
10.What did the author happen to change after his first cross-country race
A. He lost himself in victories
B. He put more effort into his study
C. He received more support from his coaches
D. He started caring about his teammates
11.What did the author realize from his experience
A. The importance of team spirit B. The value of competition
C. The secret of winning a race D. The benefits of doing sports

Indoor food growing operations are seeing both successes and failures in the United States. Some companies in the food industry are investing (投资) even as competitors fail.
California-based Plenty Unlimited this summer began working on $300 million indoor plants, while Kroger announced that it would be increasing its availability of vertically (垂直地) farmed produce. Meanwhile, two indoor farming companies that got strong backing—New Jersey’s AeroFarms and Kentucky’s AppHarvest—filed for financial failure and reorganization. And a five-year-old company in Detroit, Planted Detroit, shut its doors this summer.
The industry changes do not worry Jacob Portillo, a grower with Eden Green Technology, an indoor farming company. “The fact that other people are failing and other people are succeeding is going to happen in any industry you go to,” he said.
Indoor farming refers to growing crops indoors, which experts sometimes call “controlled environment agriculture”. There are different methods. One method called vertical farming involves putting produce from floor to ceiling, often under artificial lights and with the plants growing in nutrient-enriched water. Other growers are trying very large greenhouses, indoor beds of soil in big buildings and using special robots for parts of the farming process.
Supporters say growing indoors uses less water and land and permits food to be grown closer to consumers, saving on transport. Indoor growing is also a way to protect crops from increasingly extreme weather caused by climate change.
But critics question the sustainability (可持续性) of operations that can require a lot of energy for artificial lights. And they say paying for that light can make profitability impossible. Curt Covington of AgAmerica Lending, a private investment company centered on agriculture, is not convinced that indoor farming operations can work—except in special cases. Given the high cost of indoor operations, Covington said, “It’s just hard to be very profitable.”
12.What is Jacob Portillo’s attitude to the indoor food growing industry
A. Positive. B. Worried. C. Unclear. D. Doubtful.
13.What can we learn about indoor farming
A. It takes a lot of manpower to take care of plants.
B. It means growing plants in water instead of soil.
C. It protects crops from increasingly extreme weather.
D. It is different from controlled environment agriculture.
14.Why did Curt Covington question indoor farming operations
A. They produce little food. B. They carry great cost.
C. They need sunlight. D. They lack investors.
15.What is the best title for the text
A. What Types of Food Can Be Grown Indoors
B. How Can You Grow Food Indoors Without Soil
C. Indoor Farming Companies Take Agriculture Indoors
D. Indoor Food Growing Operations Face an Uncertain Future

We love our dogs and always try to take good care of them, but there are some simple things that can be harmful to our pets. 16______
Playing fetch with sticks
Most dogs love playing fetch with sticks. It may be fun to throw one for your dog when you don’t have a ball or rubber toy handy, but they can be extremely dangerous. Sticks can easily break. 17______ A stick can also go through a dog’s throat and get stuck there, which can be life threatening.
Feeding cooked bones
Dogs love eating bones and human leftovers, but cooked bones should never be fed to dogs. They can break into small, sharp pieces. They have the potential to cause choking or cuts to the mouth, throat or gut.
If you choose to feed your dog bones, only feed raw bones and always under control. 18______
Not all dogs can swim
Dog owners often take it for granted that all dogs can swim, but in fact some dogs may not be able to swim at all. Pugs, French bulldogs, dachshunds and similar are often poor swimmers. 19______ In order for these dogs to keep their noses and mouths above water they must stick their heads out from under water, which points their back end downwards, making them almost vertical in the water and likely to sink.
20______ To do this, get in the water with them and support them under the body until they get the hang of using all four legs to push themselves forward. Don’t force your dog if they are not comfortable, and always start by paddling in a shallow area. Many dogs will learn to swim by following other dogs into the water.
A. So keep your dog from playing fetch with sticks.
B. That’s because they have heavy bodies, short legs or short noses.
C. Swimming in a pool is just a piece of cake for these dogs.
D. Most dogs need to be taught how to swim.
E. They can even kill the pets while many pet owners aren’t aware of them.
F. Chat to your vet about the right type of bones for your dog.
G. And the pieces can cut the mouth or throat.

One day my dad came back home in his truck and there was a cage in the back. Naturally I was curious, so I went towards the truck when I noticed that there was a small little goat that wasn’t even an adult yet.
I asked my dad and he said that he bought the goat from his friend and he was going to kill it twenty minutes after he brought it home so that we would have a big meal.
My sister was there too and she was strongly for my view. We found out we got really mad at my dad and told him not to kill it. After about 10 minutes of complaining we finally convinced my dad not to kill it because we told him that there was no reason for him to kill the goat himself when he could just buy goat meat at a store.
My parents know some friends that we visit sometimes and their family really likes animals so we decided to give it to them. For about a month, they had the goat as a pet and they also had the same problems as we had because the dad wanted to kill it and eat it but the rest of the family didn’t want it to die. They also were able to persuade him not to do so. They ended up sending the goat to a family member’s farm where it would grow up happily.
Another thing that has happened to influence my belief is that I have a neighbor that really likes hunting. One day he hunted a deer and brought the body home, but he decided to leave it outside his house for everyone to see. He just left it there as if it were some kind of award that he just won. Sadly little kids started to make fun of the body and pretended to ride on it. They laughed at it and felt no problem with there being a dead deer just laying.
Paragraph 1:
I felt sick by what was happening and left because of what I had just witnessed._

16.上文“but there are some simple things that can be harmful to our pets(但是有一些简单的事情会对宠物有害)”引出话题,总述有一些简单的事情会对宠物造成伤害。
17.根据上文“Sticks can easily break (棍子很容易折断) ”和下文“A stick can also go through a dog’s throat and get stuck there(棍子也可能穿过狗的喉咙并且卡在那)”中的also推知,空处句子也应是关于折断的棍子会对狗狗造成的伤害,G项“这些碎片会割破嘴或喉咙”符合题意,故选G。
20.本空为这一段的开头位置,下文“To do this, get in the water with them and support them under the body until they get the hang of using all four legs to push themselves forward(要做到这一点,你可以和它们一起下水,在下面支撑着它们的身体,直到它们能用这四条腿来推动自己前进)”说明如何教会狗游泳,因此空处所填内容应与教狗游泳有关。

47.答案:
Paragraph 1:
I felt sick by what was happening and left because of what I had just witnessed. The majority of the people there saw no problem with what was happening. They didn’t think they were doing wrong and that they were to blame for that. A month later, I found out that my neighbors’ daughter wanted to hunt when she got older because she thought it was “fun”, which bothered me greatly.
Paragraph 2:
It amazes me how we have changed from hunting to survive to hunting for sport. I just don’t think there is any reason to kill a living thing for fun. This just leads people to hunt animals. And even the small little goat is endangered because people start to think that there’s nothing wrong with killing a life as long as it’s not a human. If there’s one thing I beg you to do, it’s to be open minded towards animals not just to humans and don’t kill for sport.
