Night after night, she came to help me sleep, even long after my childhood years.
I don’t remember when it first started making me a little angry—my mom’s hands pushing my hair that way. But it really made me uncomfortable, for they felt rough against my young skin. Finally, one night, I shouted at her, “Don’t do that any more. Your hands are too rough!” She didn’t say anything, but she never did it again.
Years later, I missed my mother’s hands and her goodnight kiss on my face. I’m not a little girl any more. My mom is in her mid-seventies, and her rough hands are still doing things for my family and me.
Now my own children have grown up. It was late on Thanksgiving Eve. As I slept in my bedroom, a familiar hand ran across my face to push the hair from my head. Then a kiss, ever so softly, touched my brow (额头).
Taking my mom’s hand, I told her how sorry I was for that night I shouted at her. But my mom didn’t know what I was talking about. She had forgotten it long ago.
The guilt that I had carried around for so long was nowhere to be found. Instead, I fell asleep with a new appreciation (感激) for my mother’s caring hands.

“Understanding, friendship, solidarity (团结) and fair competition” make up the key spirit of the Winter Olympics. However, in my opinion, the key spirit of the Winter Olympics is “Never give up”.
Why do I think that is the key spirit The main reason is that sportsmen from Jamaica (牙买加) in the movie Cool Runnings (1993) have touched my heart. The movie is based on a true story of four Jamaican sportsmen. As we all know, Jamaica is really a hot country. But in such a country, they made a decision to become bobsledders (雪橇运动员). They were so poor that they couldn’t afford a bobsled (大雪橇). So they used wood to make one sled and practiced on the hills. They practiced so much that they broke several sleds. When they took part in the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary (卡尔加里), after they fell over because the sled was broken, they carried it to the finish line. Though they didn’t win a prize, they finished the race. Their spirit has been encouraging me since then.
In our lives, we may have many similar difficulties like them. When everyone thought they would give up, they kept going to realize their dreams. Can’t we solve difficulties in front of us I’m sure that we will succeed as long as we try our best. Even though we may fail, we won’t regret (后悔) it.
So, just follow the lesson of the Olympics: Try your best and never give up.

38. What does the underlined word “it” refer to
A. Their broken sled in the race. B. An injured teammate.
C. A new sled from others. D. Their first bobsled.
39. What can we learn from the passage
A. It encouraged the writer that the four sportsmen won the race.
B. We are sure to realize our dream as long as we try our best.
C. We must meet many different difficulties from them in our lives.
D. We will regret it unless we succeed after trying our best.
40. What does the passage mainly talk about
A. The spirit of the Winter Olympics. B. The movie Cool Runnings.
C. The 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. D. Four Jamaican sportsmen.
