My son just turned 14 and does not have a smartphone. When he graduated from Grade 8, he was the only kid in his class without one. He asks for a phone now that he’s going to high school. I say no, he asks why, I explain, and he pushes back.
“You can choose to do things differently when you’re a parent,” I told him. But sometimes, I wonder if I’m being too stubborn or unfair.
The more I research, the more confident I feel in my decision. Many studies link the current mental health crisis among adolescents to fundamental changes in how they socialize, namely, the shift from in-person to online interaction.
But other mothers challenge my view. “He must feel so left out!” Then there are the parents who tell me sadly that they wish they had delayed their teenager’s phone ownership longer than they did. They urge me to hold out.
If teenagers between the ages of 13 and 18 are truly spending an average of 8 hours 39 minutes per day on their devices, as stated in a survey conducted by Common Sense Media, then what are they not doing Kids absorbed in their devices are missing out on real life, and that strikes me as really sad.
I want my son to have a childhood he feels satisfied with and proud of. I want it to be full of adventures, imaginative play and physical challenges which he must sort out himself without asking me for help. The easiest and simplest way to achieve these goals is to delay giving him a smartphone.
Some think my son is missing out or falling behind, but he is not. He does well in school and extra-curricular activities, hangs out with his friends in person, and moves independently around our small town. He promises he’ll give his own 14-year-old a phone someday, and I tell him that’s fine. But recently, he admitted that he missed the beautiful scenery on a drive to a nearby mountain because he had been so absorbed in his friend’s iPad. If that is his version of admitting I’m right, I’ll take it.

The groundbreaking Shaoxing Opera adaptation, New Dragon Gate Inn, captures the interest of a new generation and brings the ancient art form for contemporary lifestyles back to life.
Unlike the traditional framed stage, the theater is designed as an inn, with the audience becoming guests. They sit close to the performers, engaging with them, and immersing themselves in a unique and fascinating viewing experience. “This places new demands on our performers,” said Xu Yena, who acts in the show as the A cast of Jin Xiangyu, the landlady of the inn. “We need to abandon many of the stylized movements from traditional Shaoxing Opera and learn from drama and film performances, adopting a more natural, authentic, and subtle acting style.”
Upon leaving the theater, these audience members feel a sense of satisfaction that prompts them to willingly share short clips of the performance online. The fragmented (零碎的) content of performance has generated many streams and clicks, leading to high demand for show tickets, especially among young audiences. “Now, the ticket competition has become fierce and only those with fast internet access can get them,” said Chen Lijun, who plays the important supporting role of Jia Ting.
As both Xiaobaihua (a Shaoxing Opera troupe (剧团)) and Japan’s renowned Takarazuka Revue are all-female troupes, some internet users have drawn parallels between the two, likening Chen to “China’s Amami Yuki”, a former acclaimed male-role actress in the Japanese troupe.
In response, Chen said, “All good performances are worth learning from. Our two troupes share many similarities, but there are also fundamental differences, rooted in the cultural heritage of our respective theatrical traditions.”
A report by Xinhua News Agency states that Generation Z makes up 74 percent of consumers of guochao goods or China-chic goods last year. As a cultural product, New Dragon Gate Inn has successfully won the hearts of the young generation due to the contemporary nature of the show.
“Shaoxing Opera once borrowed and learned from Peking Opera and Kunqu Opera. Today, we draw inspiration from a broader range of artistic forms and expression techniques,” Xu said.
“New Dragon Gate Inn has successfully drawn many nontraditional theatergoers, particularly young people. Seeking novelty has always been what Shaoxing Opera has been doing.”
8. Who became a new challenge for the performers while they were acting in Shaoxing Opera
A. The internet users making comparison online.
B. The other troupe performing more natural and authentic.
C. The audience positioned right next to the performers.
D. The guests immersing themselves on the central stage.
9. How did Chen respond to her nickname “China’s Amami Yuki”
A. By joyfully accepting it. B. By objectively clarifying it.
C. By politely denying it. D. By respectfully using it.
10. According to Xu Yena, Shaoxing Opera has made a positive step in regaining its popularity, mainly depending on__________.
A. Adaptation and advertisement. B. Specially designed theater.
C. Actresses’ popularity online. D. Integration and innovation.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Generation Z Dominates The Market of Guocao.
B. New Dragon Gate Inn Returns to Live Stage.
C. Shaoxing Opera’s Modern Twist Wows Youth.
D. Nontraditional Theatergoers Flood into Theater.

Dogs may have the title of our best friends through their interactions with humans, but now researchers say these social skills could be present shortly after birth rather than being learned.
To better understand the role of biology in dogs’ abilities to communicate with humans, the researchers studied 375 eight-week-old service dogs. They looked at how these dogs performed in a series of tasks designed to measure their communication skills. The puppies were still living with their littermates (同窝出生者) and had not been sent to live with a volunteer puppy raiser, making it unlikely that they had learned about his or her behavior.
In the first task, a person hid a treat beneath one of two overturned cups and pointed to it to see if the puppy could follow the gesture. Since dogs are good at using noses to find things, a treat was also taped to the insides of both cups. In the second task, puppies watched as the researchers placed a yellow block next to the correct cup, instead of pointing to indicate where the puppy should look for the food.
The third task was designed to observe puppies’ tendency to look at human faces. The researchers spoke to the puppy in a voice people sometimes use when talking to a baby. They then measured how long the puppy fixed a stare on the human. In the last task, researchers sealed a treat inside a closed container and presented it to the puppy. They then measured how often the puppy looked to the human for help in opening the container.
The study found that while many of the puppies were responsive to humans’ physical and verbal cues, very few looked to humans for help with the unsolvable task. Researchers said, “This suggests that while puppies may be born knowing how to respond to human-initiated communication, the ability to initiate (发起) communication on their own may come later.” The next step will be to see if specific genes that may contribute to dogs’ abilities to communicate with humans can be identified.
12. Why were eight-week-old service dogs chosen for the study
A. They were cute and safe to deal with.
B. They were the best age to learn.
C. They had had little contact with humans before.
D. They were unlikely influenced by their mates.
13. What is the researchers’ purpose in taping food to both cups
A. To provide clues for the puppies’ final decisions.
B. To make comparisons between different conditions.
C. To check the puppies’ preference for a particular color.
D. To prevent the puppies from making use of their smell.
14. What can we know from the study
A. Puppies can understand our body language.
B. Puppies are good at asking humans for help.
C. Puppies are born to initiate communication with humans.
D. Puppies need specific genes to communicate with humans.
15. What’s the main idea of the text
A. Dogs are born to be able to learn. B. Dogs are born to understand humans.
C Dogs are talented performers. D. Dogs are humans’ best friends.

When I was 15, I fell in love with the songs when they were first released — Bring Him Home, I Dreamed A Dream and On My Own. Even though I hadn’t read Les Miserables and knew very little about the musical, the songs captured my attention and I happily sang along with enthusiasm and energy whenever I heard them on the radio.
At the age of 17, I watched Les Miserables in a theatre of Vancouver. After getting home, I was really thrilled and announced that I wanted to perform in the musical. Hearing what I said, my parents did nothing but support me, although they considered the thought ridiculous, given that we lived 50 kilometres from the nearest large town, Toowoomba. There was little likelihood of ever having a chance to perform.
But some things are just meant to be. The Toowoomba Choral Society bought the performance rights with the view to perform it. Although I was not a member of the choir, they called for auditions (试镜) and I went along. I had had no experience singing and had never performed in any musicals but I believed in miracles and hoped that there was a place for me somewhere in the chorus.
I tried out for the part of Javert but did not have the range. Little did I know there were a host of parts that needed filling. Fortunately, I was chosen to be in the chorus as well as playing seven roles — ten costume changes in all. It was so exciting to play all the different parts. Rehearsals (排练) started immediately and I got a crash course in singing, acting and dancing. There was so much to learn and as I drove to rehearsals three times a week a little voice would say, “You are in over your head, get out now.”
I really had a hard time rehearsing — first with written texts and sheet music and then without. Personally, I struggled. So much to learn really made me so crazy that I had a strong desire to quit. And the little voice “You are in over your head, get out now.” rang in my ears again.
注意:
(1) 续写词数应为150左右;
(2) 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
At that time, my parents’ determined look appeared in my mind.

C. Dogs are talented performers. D. Dogs are humans’ best friends.
【答案】12. C 13. D 14. A 15. B

【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段最后一句“The puppies were still living with their littermates (同窝出生者) and had not been sent to live with a volunteer puppy raiser, making it unlikely that they had learned about his or her behavior. (这些小狗仍然和它们同窝出生的小狗生活在一起,没有被送到志愿者养狗人那里,所以它们不太可能了解他或她的行为)”可知,选择8个星期大的小狗是因为它们还未与人类有过接触及互动,符合实验的设计要求。故选C。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段第二句“Since dogs are good at using noses to find things a treat was also taped to the insides of both cups. (因为狗狗擅长用鼻子找东西,所以两个杯子的里面都粘上了零食)”可推知,这样做是为了避免小狗使用自己的嗅觉做出判断。故选D。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段第一句“The study found that while many of the puppies were responsive to humans’ physical and verbal cues, very few looked to humans for help with the unsolvable task. (研究发现,虽然许多小狗对人类的身体和语言暗示有反应,但很少有小狗在无法解决的任务上寻求人类的帮助)”可知,小狗对人类的肢体和语言暗示有反应,即能理解人类的一些肢体语言。故选A。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Dogs may have earned the title of our best friends through their interactions with humans, but now researchers say these social skills could, be present shortly after birth rather than being learned. (通过与人类的互动,狗狗可能赢得了我们最好的朋友的称号,但现在研究人员表示,这些社交技能可能在出生后不久就会出现,而不是后天习得的)”可知,文章主要介绍了关于狗天生就能理解人类的研究过程以及研究发现小狗可能一出生就知道如何回应人类发起的交流,但它们自己发起交流的能力可能要晚一些。由此可知,B选项“狗生来就能理解人类”能够概括文章大意。故选B。

A parent should make his/her face that goes with the feeling and explain a situation where it may come up.(父母可以拿起一张很大纸,和他们的孩子一起坐下来集思广益,想出他们能想到的所有感受。这个列表可能包括孩子们不认识的情绪,但没关系。父母应该让他/她的表情与这种感觉相一致,并解释可能出现这种感觉的情况。)”可知,本段主要讲述的是将感受列个清单。选项A“Make a big list of feelings.(把你的感受列一个大清单。)”正是本文主要内容,将所有的感受列一个清单。故选A。

【20题详解】

Very glad to hear from you. I’ve learned that you show great interest in Chinese Spring Festival Couplets. Here, I’ll tell you something about it.
Spring Festival Couplet, Chunlian in Chinese, is the most common and important custom when celebrating Chinese New Year. The tradition dates back to thousands of years ago. With black or golden characters written on red paper, Spring Festival Couplets are composed of a pair of poetry lines pasted on the front door. Putting up couplets expresses people’s delight and hopes for a better life in the coming new year.
Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
At that time, my parents’ determined look appeared in my mind. They had always been there for me, and I didn’t want to disappoint them. Instead, I wanted to make them proud. With this in mind, I resolved to push through any challenge and continue rehearsing. I sought guidance from my fellow cast members and practiced timelessly at home. Gradually, I began to understand the characters and their emotions, and my singing and acting skills improved significantly. Finally, the big day arrived.
On the opening night, nervous as I was, I gathered my courage and stepped on the stage. The audience’s applause filled me with confidence, and I knew that my hard work would pay off. Throughout the performance, I felt a strong connection with the other actors and the story we were telling. As the final note came to an end, I knew we made it. I felt a sense of accomplishment. I had achieved the impossible — rising above my limitations and performing in the greatest musical. My unexpected musical journey taught me that with determination, perseverance, and support from others, I could overcome my obstacle.
