Learning objectives
1. Distinguish -ing and -ed as complement, figure out whether it’s active or passive relationship between -ing and -ed and its logical subject when they are used as complement.
2. Use -ing and -ed as complement appropriately.
Activity 1
Could you find out the fun_ction of -ing or –ed phrase in the folowing sentences in the passage
1. We see a woman swimming at night in a dark sea.
2. It made people frightened of ahrks, especially of the great white shark.
3. People just wanted them killed.
4. Benchley saw sharks being killed and this caused s deep change in him.
以上四句中的-ing 和-ed 形式在句中都作宾语补足语。
Activity 2 -ing and -ed as complement
现在分词和 过去分词用作宾语补足语,其结构为:主语+谓语+宾语+-ing/-ed。符合这个结构的谓语动词或结构主要用以下几种:
1)感官类动词,常见的用:feel, find, hear, notice, observe, see, watch, listen to, look at, spot(看见), catch(看见,撞见)等。
1. I could feel the wind blowing on my face.
2. Sometimes she would listen to him playing the saxophne.
3. Back from his two-year medical service in Africa, Dr. Lee was very happy to see his mother taken good care of at home.
4. Mr. White found his hometown greatly changed in the past 5 years.
2) 使役动词,常见的用:have, get, leave, keep等,make后面可以出现过去分词作宾语,没有现在分词作宾补现象.
1.The peasants had the tractor worrking day and night at the harvest time.
2. The captain got the soldiers moving towards the front after a short rest.
3. He got his tooth pulled out yesterday.
4. Don’t leave things undone till tomorrow.
5.He had his moneey stolen while in the supemarket.
3) 意欲动词want, like, wish, expect, would like等可以接复合宾语,过去分词作宾补。
1. I'd like the job done when I come back from the journey.
2. The mother wants her daughter taught music in her free time.
4. “with+宾语+过去分词”结构中,这一结构通常在句中作时间、方式、条件、原因、伴随等状语。
1. The murderer was brought in, with his hands tied behind his back.
2. With water heated, we can see the steam.
3. With the local leading us, we succeeded in going through the forest.
注意事项:
1)两种分词在以上结构中区别:现在分词往往和宾语是主谓关系,而且动作往往是在进行中或状态在持续中。过去分词往往和宾语是动宾关系,动作也可以是完成状态。
2)上述几种结构都可以变成被动句,此时的分词即可升级为主语补足语。
1. Someone found little Tom lying on the floor. -----
Litle Tom was found lying on the floor.
2. He made his washing machine repaired yesterday. ---
His washing machine was made repaired yesterday.
3) 此类动词如interest, excite, surprise, amaze, astonish, frighten, terrify, satisfy, confuse, puzzle, tire, bore, exhaust, please, entertain, amuse, embarrass, worry,等在作补足语时,宾语是“人”,常用过去分词,宾语是“物”,常用现在分词。如:
1. The law made some would-be mother-in-law worried.
2. He added some details to his novel in order to leave his novel more interesting.
3. He felt the new teacher’s teaching method boring.
4) 感官类和使役类动词以及with的复合结构中,也可以出现不定式作宾补,在 感官类和使役类动词后面的不定式作宾语表示全过程或一次性动作,to往往省略(除get leave等),变为被动句要还原to。在 with的复合结构中,不定式表示将来动作。
1. The strict teacher had us students redo our homework immdiately.
(have一般没有被动语态)
2. I have seen Milla grow up from childhood, so I know her quite wel1. ---Milla has seen to grow up from childhood, so I know her quite wel.
3. With so much homework to do, I have no time to hang out with my friends this weekend.
