Decisions in life are rarely black and white but usually involve shades of gray. At dinner time, the decision you face is not between fasting and eating like a pig, but whether to take that extra spoonful of food. When exams are around the corner, your decision is not between quitting them and studying 24 hours a day, but whether to spend an extra hour reviewing your notes. Economists use the term “marginal changes” to describe minor adjustments to an existing plan of action.
In many situations, people make the best decisions by thinking at the margin. Margin means “edge”, so marginal changes are adjustments around the edges of what you are doing. Suppose, for instance, that you ask a friend for advice about how many years to stay in school. If he compares the lifestyle of a person with a Ph. D. to that of a grade school dropout, you might complain that this comparison is not helpful for your decision. You have some education already and most likely are deciding whether to spend an extra year or two in school. To make this decision, you need to know the additional benefits that an extra year in school would offer (higher salaries throughout life and the pure joy of learning) and the additional costs that you would pay (tuition and the forgone salaries while you are in school). By comparing these marginal benefits and marginal costs, you can evaluate whether the extra year is worthwhile.
Individuals and firms can make better decisions by thinking at the margin. A rational decision-maker takes action if and only if the marginal benefit of the action exceeds the marginal cost.
4. What does “fasting” underlined in Paragraph 1 mean
A. Eating or drinking a lot. B. Eating little or no food.
C. Eating on a regular basis. D. Eating without appetite.
5. Why does the author give an example in Paragraph 2
A. To explain marginal thinking. B. To solve real-life problems.
C. To evaluate marginal thinking. D. To encourage adjustments.
6. What can we infer from the text
A. It is unnecessary to make minor adjustments to plans.
B. Comparison makes little sense in decision-making.
C. People often weigh up benefits and costs of decisions.
D. Marginal changes are controversial among individuals.
7. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Marginal Thinking Leads to Better Decisions
B. Marginal Benefit Goes beyond Marginal Cost
C. Rational Thinkers Exist in All Aspects of Life
D. Pleasure Results from Effective Comparison

Standing in my office 25 years ago was a young astronomer. She had an incredible request that my team revise our software to do something beyond our design, and risk breaking it. All to carry out a seemingly impossible experiment — to prove that a massive black hole existed in our Milky Way. My initial “no way” gradually gave way in the face of her cheerful but unshakable determination. It was my first encounter with Andrea Ghez, one of the winners of Nobel Prize in Physics 2020.
For 25 years Andrea has been searching for evidence of a black hole at the heart of our galaxy. But the work has been defined by technology. Scientific equipment was never designed to meet Andrea's need — analyzing the image data at superspeed. But she was not to give in and our team just made the changes. And it worked! It was extremely hard and time-consuming, but Andrea persisted. Out of that effort came the first evidence of stars orbiting a black hole.
Andrea is fond of owing her success to the interaction between astronomers and engineers responding to the challenge. Science questions generate new technology and new technology generates new science. Andrea has always pioneered in this virtuous cycle She created UCLA Galactic Centre to promote research and technical developments.
Today, Andrea received the highest scientific recognition. But as she would be the very first to knowledge, this success represents the combined efforts of so many. From the theoretical prediction Albert Einstein, through the amazing telescopes and observatory locations, to the technical workers it is the product of thousands.
But in my eyes, it was just one person that had the persistence and focus to make the idea happen that person is my friend and longtime colleague the one who refused to take "no" for an answer Andrea Ghez.
8. Why did Andrea Ghez pay the first visit to the author
A. To appreciate a software design. B. To demand a software revision.
C. To conduct an astronomy research. D. To promote a high-tech product.
9. What has Andrea Ghez been persisting in
A. Carrying out outer space experiment. B. Developing superspeed equipment.
C. Looking for evidence of a black hole. D. Searching for new stars in the galaxy.
10. Which of the following best describes Andrea Ghezi
A. Pioneering and appreciative. B. Artistic and reserved.
C. Determined and disciplined. D. Innovative and controlling.
11. What does the author think of Andrea Ghez
A. Average B. Fashionable.
C. Troublesome. D. Admirable.

Is there a link between social media and depression Do Facebook and Instagram have a negative impact on your mental health It’s complicated.
Sometimes, looking through Instagram just makes you feel bad. You try not to envy your friends, but they always seem to be traveling somewhere cool, eating something fancy, or looking cute in perfect just-rolled-out-of-bed hair. On the other hand, there are times when you laugh at funny memes (表情包), catch up with old friends, and feel happy to belong to fun social media communities. Clearly, social media isn’t all bad.
People are increasingly suspecting that there’re potential problems of social media. Things like cyberbullying (网上欺凌) , screen addiction, and being exposed to endless filtered images (美颜) that make it impossible not to make comparisons between yourself and others often make the news. In July, a big study came out in the journal JAMA titled “Association of Screen Time and Depression in Adolescence.” This big headline seems to confirm what a lot of people have been saying — screen time is horrible for young people.
The study followed over 3,800 adolescents over four years as part of a drug and alcohol prevention program. Part of what the investigators measured was the teens’ amount of screen time, including time spent on social media, as well as their levels of depression symptoms. One of their main findings was that higher amounts of social media use were associated with higher levels of depression. That was true both when the researches compared between people and compared each person against their own mental health over time.
Case closed Not so fast. Before we end the debate once and for all, let’s take a closer look at this and other studies. Let’s ask ourselves: what exactly is the relationship between social media use and depression It turns out there are several warnings.
12. Why do people sometimes feel bad when looking through Instagram
A. They lack contact with old friends. B. They can travel nowhere.
C. They don’t look perfect. D. They feel unbalanced.
13. Why is the article in journal JAMA mentioned
A. To comment. B. To prove. C. To suggest. D. To explore.
14. Which may agree with the findings of the study
A Depression is related to social media use.
B. Teens’ amount of screen time is limited.
C. It is not easy to tell reasons for depression.
D. Social media contributes to physical health.
15. What’s the best title of the text
A. How to reduce depression B. Does social media cause depression
C. Shall people reduce screen time D. Why is it time to give up social media

WHY A DOSE OF FEAR IS GOOD FOR YOU

·Feeling fear is fun and exciting. Many people scare themselves on purpose. ____16____

·____18____ Being afraid of something can remind you of an area of your life that is limiting you. For instance, if you’re afraid of flying but face the fear and gather up the courage to step on an airplane, you can travel the world. Adding to your experiences means that you’ll create a varied life. You’ll also have fewer regrets.
·Fear makes you aware of what’s really important in life. How often have you said to yourself: “When I have more time, I’ll spend it with my family, pursue my passion, eat healthier or exercise more” Fear makes you realize that “now” is the only time you have to achieve and follow through what is most important._____19_____
Some say where fear meets courage is the sweet spot in which mountains get scaled and rivers are run. _____20_____ We should all embrace our fear. Not the big fears that are life-threatening but the helpful fears that come in small doses.
A. Fear helps you succeed.
B. “Later” is never ensured.

E. And every time you come through a challenge, you feel empowered.

“I want a friend!” my five-year-old’s clear blue eyes showed the pain of rejection. Noah is deaf, and the past couple of years have begun to show what the future holds for my little guy.
The first few years of his life, Noah had many friends in our neighborhood. Small children don’t talk a lot and are content to simply play. As time passed and Noah got to the age where speech and hearing were a noticeable part of “hanging out”, his friends started realizing he was different. Soon, no one came to play with my tiny son, and he too began to understand he was different. My heart has ached, and I have spent endless hours in tears, begging God to send him a friend. But the children at school come from everywhere, and none live near enough to “hang out” .
Noah recently began the heartbreaking hobby of writing and leaving mail on the porch (门廊) for his “friends” . He sticks his own toys to the notes, thinking that he can somehow make friends this way. I often have to retrieve (取回) his notes so that he thinks someone is getting his messages of friendship. His excited trips to the front porch the next morning would sometimes net him a feeling of having an unseen pen pal. It breaks my heart.
But today was different. I got a miracle—in fact, three of them.
My phone rang, and I was distracted with a long-distance friend, catching up with each other’s lives without noticing Noah slipping out the front door. It wasn’t until Nick, my sixteen-year-old son came home for lunch that Noah’s absence was known. Panic-stricken, Nick and I searched the house, yard, and garage ... no Noah.

B 5. A 6. C 7. A

由文章第一段“Decisions in life are rarely black and white but usually involve shades of gray. At dinner time, the decision you face is not between fasting and eating like a pig, but whether to take that extra spoonful of food. When exams are around the corner, your decision is not between quitting them and studying 24 hours a day, but whether to spend an extra hour reviewing your notes.(生活中的决定很少是非黑即白的,但通常都是灰色的。在晚餐时间,你面临的决定不是 还是像猪一样吃,而是是否多吃一勺食物。当考试临近时,你的决定不是放弃考试还是24小时学习,而是是否多花一个小时复习笔记。)”可推断出,fasting 在此处与eating like a pig意思相反。
根据第二段中“Margin means ‘edge’, so marginal changes are adjustments around the edges of what you are doing.(边际意味着‘边缘’,所以边际变化是围绕你正在做的事情的边缘进行的调整。)”以及下文的举例“ Suppose, for instance, that you ask a friend for advice about how many years to stay in school. If he compares the lifestyle of a person with a Ph. D. to that of a grade school dropout, you might complain that this comparison is not helpful for your decision. ...(例如,假设你向一个朋友征求关于在学校待多少年的建议。如果他把一个博士的生活方式和一个小学辍学的人的生活方式进行比较,你可能会抱怨这种比较对你的决定没有帮助。……)”可知,举例是为了解释说明边际变化及边际思维。故选A项。
根据文章第二段中“By comparing these marginal benefits and marginal costs, you can evaluate whether the extra year is worthwhile.(通过比较这些边际收益和边际成本,你可以评估额外的一年是否值得。)”和最后一段“A rational decision-maker takes action if and only if the marginal benefit of the action exceeds the marginal cost.(当且仅当行动的边际收益超过边际成本时,理性决策者才会采取行动。)”
再结合文章最后一段“Individuals and firms can make better decisions by thinking at the margin.(个人和公司可以通过边际思维做出更好的决策)”,A项Marginal Thinking Leads to Better Decisions(边际思维带来更好的决策)符合文意。故选A项。

9. What has Andrea Ghez been persisting in
A Carrying out outer space experiment. B. Developing superspeed equipment.
C. Looking for evidence of a black hole. D. Searching for new stars in the galaxy.
10. Which of the following best describes Andrea Ghezi
A. Pioneering and appreciative. B. Artistic and reserved.
C. Determined and disciplined. D. Innovative and controlling.
11. What does the author think of Andrea Ghez
A. Average B. Fashionable.
C. Troublesome. D. Admirable.
B 9. C 10. C 11. D

But she was not to give in and our team just made the changes. And it worked! It was extremely hard and time-consuming, but Andrea persisted.”(科学设备的设计从来没有满足安德里亚以超高速分析图像数据的需要。

The study followed over 3800 adolescents over four years as part of a drug and alcohol prevention program.

A. To comment. B. To prove. C. To suggest. D. To explore.
14. Which may agree with the findings of the study
A. Depression is related to social media use.
D 13. B 14. A 15. B

根据时间状语“since the Xia and Shang dynasties”可知,句子表示从过去开始一直延续到现在的动作,用现在完成时或者现在完成进行时,主语Flames是复数,与谓语burn是主动关系,故填have been burning或have burnt (burned)。
“key to”表示“……
分析句子结构可知,“began as a practical container”和“ evolved into pieces of art”两部分有顺承关系,并列连词and常用来表示顺承关系,故填and。

Panic-stricken, Nick and I searched the house, yard, and garage ... no Noah.

1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;

I let them play until lunchtime, at last walking down the street to retrieve my child.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
As I searched the house again, a million frightened thoughts came through my brain. A child off on his own is scary enough, let alone a deaf one. I was thrown into sheer panic. Just then came Nick’s yell, “I found him !” I could hear awe in his voice, and I hurried over to see. A few houses down the street, four children were playing excitedly. Noah was right in the middle of it. Like brothers and sisters, they were dancing, jumping, laughing, falling, giggling and chasing each other around the trees. I watched with tear-filled eyes a scene that most mothers see every day, but that I had dreamed of and prayed hard for.
I let them play until lunchtime, at last walking down the street to retrieve my child. I felt like I was floating. “Hi! I’m Noah’s mommy,” my grin was greeted by four chubby, dirty, and happy faces. It was not until then that the three little angels knew my son’s name. Actually, they knew Noah was deaf, but didn’t care at all. “But he can climb and we like playing with him”, said a girl excitedly. Finally they waved good-bye. Noah started off for home, and then turned around. He looked up at me and, with a priceless grin, signed “friends” to me. My heart was just filled with gratitude.
