Imagine that a girl sits down for a test in a future classroom. Her exam paper is made by an artificial intelligence(AI)(人工智能) model based on her own laming. When she finishes her paper, she hands her paper to her teacher, who uses another AI model to grade the paper. Based on the result, a new learning plan is made for the student according to her strengths(优势) and weaknesses. This is personalized(个性化的) education at its best.
Could this be the future of AI in education It is certainly possible. With the development of high technology, the dream about the AI classroom will come true even faster than we expected.
However, it also puts a question: How can AI help students improve their schoolwork
AI can use past information to make personalized learning plans according to students’ performances. The plans allow students to learn at their own speed and in their own way. AI can easily catch expressions(表情) on students’ faces. When students get into trouble, AI models can make a mark. Even before they start to show signs of trouble, AI models can make correct predictions(预测). At the same time, AI models can provide ways of dealing with problems and improving learning plans quickly.
What’s more, AI can provide the special program for those who have problems in learning. One example of a company developing AI to improve the learning experience is Nuance. It offered Dragon Speech Recognition technology. With the support of voice recognition(识别), AI allows students to complete tasks only by speaking. This offers a chance to those who have problems in writing. AI will become more and more important in education. In the near future, we will see an AI classroom. It can not only provide personalized learning plans but also use technology to predict results. Education will be personalized to a student’s strengths, bringing a more enjoyable learning experience for all students.

It was dark that night and it wasn’t easy to see where we were going. Suddenly, a big steamboat (汽船) came at us very fast. Jim and I jumped off the raft (木筏) into the water. The boat hit the raft and went on up the river.
When I came up out of the water, I couldn’t see Jim anywhere. I called out his name again and again, but there was no answer. “He’s dead!” I thought. Slowly, I swam to the side of the river and got out. I was near a big old wooden house. Suddenly, a lot of angry dogs jumped out at me and someone called from the house, “Who’s there ”
“George Jackson,” I answered quickly. “I’ve fallen off a river boat.”
The people in that house took me in and gave me some new clothes and a good meal. I told them that my family were all dead, so they said I could stay with them as long as I wanted.
A few days later, a slave (奴隶) in the house came to me and said, “Come with me!” Together, we went down to some trees by the river. “In there!” he said and went away.
On the ground, I found a man, asleep. It was Jim! I was really happy to see him. When the steamboat hit the raft, Jim told me, the raft didn’t crash. Jim swam after it and caught it. Then he began to look for me.

Although air is all around us, we can’t see it. We can feel it and breathe it. The air that surrounds the Earth is called the atmosphere (大气层) and it is made up mostly of two gases nitrogen and oxygen. Gravity pulls on the gasses and keeps the atmosphere close to the Earth’s surface. This is good, because we need oxygen in order to live.
There are many layers in the atmosphere. Because of gravity’s pull, most of the air is in the bottom layer. When scientists talk about the atmosphere, they often use the word altitude. They measure altitude from sea level, which is the place where the land and sea are at the same level. There is a lot of oxygen at sea level.
As the altitude increases, the atmosphere has less gas. This means there is less oxygen to breathe. That’s why it is harder to breathe at the top of a mountain than it is at sea level.

The next day, after breakfast, Holly waited for everyone to leave the house. Then she let down the rope ladder and took Eco for a walk. Eco loved it—he was happy to be on the ground again—and he ran and jumped and ran after other dogs.
Holly wanted to see her friends, but she couldn’t stay away from the oak tee for very long. She had to be there in case her father tried to cut it down.
Holly’s father tried to get her down from the tree again after work. This time he was ready for action! He walked up to the tree carrying a ladder. He leaned it against a branch.
“Right,” he said. “You’re going to come down from that tree right now.” “No way,” said Holly.
“OK, if that’s the way you want it, I’m going to come up and get you.”

I grew up in the countryside. I didn’t understand what it brought to me until I became an adult. It helped me learn more special skills than my peers who grew up in cities.
I learned to cook at about 10 years old. The first skills I learned was making dough(面团). Since my parents often came home late, a prepared dough would help my family have supper sooner. I thought it would be easy—just mix water and flour(面粉), right Not quite! First I made the dough too soft. Then I made it too hard. But as I kept trying, I learned the trick.
Later, I cooked fried dishes and things like dumplings. I fell in love with cooking. It’s a good way to relax. Besides cooking, I did a lot of farm work in my childhood. I got to know how to plant vegetables. Though it was hard work, the experience taught me things that many of my peers still don’t know. For example, the part of a potato that has sprouts can be planted as a seed. I also learned that the fruits of peanut and ginger plant grow under the soil. I once discussed this with my friends from the city. They thought it was a pity that they didn’t have the chance to learn these things in their lives.
Some might say we can learn these things from the textbooks. But it can’t compare to the joy of learning firsthand, watching plants blossom and grow. It brings a new way to look at the world. You’ll love everything on your plate.
This may be why I’m so happy to hear that labor education will be required in China. Starting with the coming term, students in primary and middle schools will have at least one class every week to learn basic household skills like cooking and cleaning. These special skills will help you for the rest of your life.

Sharon first started volunteering at the age of 16. It was the summer before high school, and she hadn’t really understood the meaning behind doing something for others until that day.
Sharon was joining a charity group to the Ronald McDonald House (RMH) in Dallas, Texas. RMH is a “home-away-from-home” for families so they can stay close by their hospitalized (住院的) child at little or no cost.
Sharon remembers her first time walking into RMH — nervous and afraid of saying the wrong thing. After only 5 minutes, she got to know families. “That day, I played with kids, laughed with the adults, and heard many stories.” says Sharon. Since then, she has volunteered with RMH. She likes the joy her volunteering brings to others.
A smile that will always live in Sharon’s memory came from a girl named Caroline — a patient whose family stayed at RMH.

“I feel like I’ve become more caring and selfless since I started volunteering. I search for joy in the joy I offer to others,” says Sharon.
Sharon has one piece of advice for those who have never volunteered.

I was on the train one afternoon. Our carriage was almost empty, just a few people. At one station, a drunk man suddenly entered the train. He shouted and swung his fists (拳头) at a woman holding a baby. Luckily the baby wasn’t hurt. Then he tried to kick an old woman. Everyone was scared.

Just then someone shouted, “Hey!” It was an old man. He was smiling at the drunk man. “What have you been drinking ” he asked.
“I’ve been drinking wine (葡萄酒), but it’s none of your business!” said the drunk man angrily. “Oh, that’s wonderful,” said the old man. Then he told how he loved drinking wine with his wife and eating watermelon.
“I also love watermelon,” said the drunk man.
“And I’m sure you have a wonderful wife, too,” said the old man.
“No,” replied the drunk man. “My wife died,” Then he began to sob (啜泣), “I have no wife, no home, no job. I’m so ashamed of myself.”

While visiting the UK, you’ll find how good British people are at waiting, specially in queues.
Everywhere in the UK, it’s common to see queues. People wait in long lines at bus stops, in shops and in cinemas,
Speaking to BBC News, Bate Bradley, a lecture at the University of Kent, said that queuing in the UK isn’t just about showing good will toward other people. British people like everything to be in perfect order, so being shouted at for skipping ahead of someone in a line is something that most Brits try to avoid.
The British love of queuing goes back to World War II. Because of wartime rationing, people had to wait in line to get something important in a shop, specially food. The government at the time was worried that trouble and disorder would happen. If that happened, people would not get food from a shop in time. So, it made a point of telling people that queuing was polite and a British thing to do. And that message is still alive today.
There’s probably only one factor that will make a Briton’s willingness to stand patiently in line different—the weather. It can change quickly in the UK. One minute it can be fine, and the next it can be wet and windy. If people are queuing in bad weather, their main hope is that the bus arrives soon, or that the people in front of them will give up and decide to leave.
If someone decides to break queuing rules in bad weather, tensions can become very high indeed. This is because most British people will certainly speak up and tell the queue-jumper to get to the back of the line.
But if the weather is good, queuing can be fun. When people are waiting, they may be excited about the thing they’re waiting for. There’s an air of expectation when people are standing in line for a pop film, for example. This can make queuing for something a very enjoyable experience.

Have you ever paid for educational podcasts (播客) or live videos Ask some people and most of them will say yes. “Pay-for-knowledge” has been more and more fashionable these years. The contents of these “pay-for-knowledge” products are from language learning to gardening or baby-caring. Everything you think of can be found online at this moment. “Pay-for-knowledge” is on the rise(兴起).

For another, a large number of customers buy them just for showing off. In fact, those who have really had self-growth after buying online courses may be the kind of people who need them least. In other words, with or without these courses, they can make it anyway, because they are those who have the ability to learn by themselves.
In general, the best is the one that suits you most. “Pay-for-knowledge” may be used as a good start for self-growth. Be careful! Otherwise, your dream of success may not come true.

A new study has found that people who lived in ancient(long ago) Britain quickly evolved to deal with a lack of sunlight. Evolution is when living things change over time to survive. Jonathan Terhorst from the University of Michigan and Lain Mathieson from the University of Pennsylvania, both in the US, looked at data from the genes of 529 people who lived in Britain over the past 4,500 years. DNA in genes is a chemical that carries all the information about your body.
The team found that the levels of vitamin D and calcium in humans’ bodies in Britain suddenly increased. Vitamin D is a substance that humans make naturally when their skin is exposed to sunlight, and it helps bones to grow straight and strong.
Humans evolved in Africa, where there is plenty of sunshine. However, when they moved to places like Britain, where there is not much sunlight, they were faced with a problem—many of them couldn’t make much vitamin D. The earliest arrivals in Britain got vitamin D by eating oily fish but people gradually moved to growing crops instead of fishing. This made them short of the essential vitamin. The researchers found that around this time, humans in Britain quickly evolved to have pale skin, which absorbs more light for making vitamin D. This change was an example of natural selection, which is when hard conditions make particular genes needed for survival. Those who have the genes are more likely to survive and pass their genes on to the next generation.
You can also make up for a lack of vitamin D by eating more calcium, which helps bones grow. Milk is a source of calcium but to digest(消化) it you need to make a substance in your gut called lactase. Many people across the world can’t make lactase when they grow up. However, the study found that early people in Britain evolved to keep on producing lactase even as adults. This meant they could carry on drinking milk—so they kept cows. This extra calcium, along with their pale skin’s use of what sunshine there was, helped them survive.
37. In ancient Britain, people evolved in order to ________.
A. have pale skin B. take more vitamin D
C. get used to the weather D. make more lactase to digest milk
38. People should ________, if they cannot get enough vitamin D.

C. move to places like Britain D. take part in more outdoor activities
39. British people have stronger abilities to ________ than many people all over the world.
A. digest milk B. keep cows C. catch oily fish D. change their genes

Have you been finding yourself in hot water with just about everyone in your life Have your parents got angry with you because you didn’t clean up your room even after they had repeatedly told you to do so Have your teachers been criticizing you for not handing in your homework on time Maybe you are even in trouble with yourself. Are you yawning (打哈欠) all the time Do the things that used to interest you no longer make you feel good
Did you answer “yes” to some or even all of these questions Do you consider yourself to be a gamer If so, then maybe it’s time to tum off your computer and read this article carefully.
More and more study has proved that too much gaming can change your brain structure (构造). It can also lead to some physical illnesses that will remain with you for a lifetime. Your love for games is taking away your freedom to control your own future. This is not a joke!
Luckily, there are ways for you to help yourself so that you can start feeling good about your life again. The first step is to accept that you’ve got a problem. You can say this to your friends. Next, spend some time learning about what is happening inside your brain as a result of too much gaming. Think about how you feel when you are playing your favorite games. As soon as you win a round, do your hands move to start a new game without you even thinking about it This is a clear sign of addiction (上瘾) — a brain disease.
In order to fight this disease, you may have to give up playing a particular game. Limit the amount of time you spend on gaming (the new national rules may be just what you need). You can also get help from your friends. They can, for example, help you to take up some new hobbies.

In Los Angeles, a waiter served a group of teens. The waiter remembered his experience as a young high school student. So he made sure the teens had a pleasant experience at the restaurant. The waiter made sure of it.
After serving all the teens doing a great job, he was left a tip(小费), only $3. 28. That was hardly enough to buy a drink at Starbucks.
The waiter went home. And he felt angry for the students who did not know the value of hard work. They looked down on people like him. Or so he thought.

The Arctic, Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans are the four oceans we learned about in the Geography class. But now we have a new ocean.
On World Ocean Day, which falls on June 8, the National Geographic Society announced it would recognize(承认)the Southern Ocean in Antarctica(南极洲).
Unlike the Arctic, Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans—which are defined by the continents(大陆)around them, the Southern Ocean is instead characterized by the Antarctic Circumpolar Current(南极绕极流). According to National Geographic, the Southern Ocean includes most of the waters surrounding Antarctica out to 60 degrees south latitude(纬度).
“It’s reported that it is the only ocean to touch three others and to completely embrace(包围)a continent rather than being embraced by several continents,” Sylvia Earle, an American biologist and oceanographer, told the Daily Mail.
Those familiar with the Southern Ocean know it’s unlike any other ocean. “Anyone who has been there will find it difficult to explain what’s so amazing about it, but they’ll all agree that the glaciers(冰川)are bluer, the air colder, the mountains more frightening and the landscapes more attractive than anywhere else you can go,” Seth Sykora-Bodie, a marine scientist, told National Geographic.
Because of the different environment of the Southern Ocean, it’s home to thousands of unique species(物种). The ocean also has wider ecological effects. For example, humpback whales are known to feed on small shrimp off Antarctica during the summer before moving north to the warmer climates of Central and South America for the colder winter months, according to the Daily Mail.
The National Geographic Society hopes their revised(修订过的)maps will help the public learn more about the area, and it helps to encourage Southern Ocean protection—but its importance is even beyond that.
“We think it’s very important from an educational standpoint to bring attention to the Southern Ocean as a fifth ocean,” Alex Tait, a geographer, told the Post. “So when students learn about parts. of the ocean world, they learn it’s an interconnected ocean, and they learn there are these areas called oceans that are really important, and that there’s a special one in the icy waters around Antarctica.”

She thinks of searching on Google but there are millions of people called Tom and she doesn’t know his surname. She thinks of going to his parents’ house but the town council pulled down these houses years ago when they built the motorway. And then she remembers something—the Kiwi key ring. Her dad used the same number as her phone to make it easy to remember. She enters the number and clicks on “Go”. A few seconds later a message appears: Kiwi key ring located! The Kiwi key ring you are looking for is located at Kiwi Technology, Port Prime.
Jan stares at the computer screen. “Oh, no!” she thinks, “It’s not working.” But then she thinks, “Maybe Tom works at Kiwi.” She goes downstairs and finds her mum and dad having coffee in the kitchen.
“Mum Dad Is there anyone at Kiwi called Tom ” Her mum looks at dad, surprised by the question.
“Why…yes. There are a few people called Tom working there.”
“There’s Tom Bradley in our department… and Thomas Duncan in accounts… and Tom Green, of course.”
“Who’s Tom Green ” Jan asks.
“Michael Green’s father, you know, the boy in your class at school.”
Jan can see Michael smiling at her from the back of the classroom and suddenly there’s something familiar about his face.
“Yes, it’s him!”
“Michael Green ”
“No. Tom Green. I’m going to see him,” Jan says excitedly.
“You can’t see Tom Green. He’s the head of the company. He started the company. He’s an important man. ”

“Colour, colour, colour!” are the words of the artist Eric Carle. Eric is like the king in the world of children’s books. He has written over 70 children’s books. His most famous book The Very Hungry Caterpillar, is common on children’s bookshelves all over the world. What most people don’t know is that Eric also makes art for adults, which is called “ArtArt”. People didn’t know about it, because he didn’t show it to the public until he was 84 years old!
Like Eric’s children’s books, his “ArtArt” is full of bright and clear colour. He says that he loves colour so much because he missed it during the war in Germany. Eric was born in New York in 1929, but moved to Germany with his family when he was 6. When he was 10, World War II began. He noticed that all the houses and buildings in his town were painted grey, brown or dark green. It was a sad time, and it seemed like there was no colour anywhere.
At the end of the war, “when colour came back,” Eric explains, “I just loved it so much. I keep saying that I wish our eyes could see more colour. Colour is a very important part of my work.”
That’s true. Eric paints bright colours on Paper, cuts out shapes, and then glues them onto another piece of paper. This method is called collage (拼贴画). In fact, it is what led Eric to his “ArtArt”.
Eric’s “ArtArt” includes large collages as well as paintings, photographs and even costumes.
In all these works, he uses all kinds of colours—everything from purple
