九年级英语开学检测试题
一.阅读理解共 30分
A
Dear editors (编辑),
I get bad marks at school, especially in maths. My dad says I must try harder,
because he wants me to go to university. He thinks I'm lazy, but it's not true. I work
really hard! I've tried to talk to my mother, but she says I have to work as hard as my
brother does. But my brother Harry doesn't have to study hard and he always gets
excellent marks. It's not fair!
The only thing I like is art. My teacher says that I'm the best student she's had for
years. When I told my dad about it, all he said was, “You mustn't waste your time on
art and you must work harder!” Please help me — I don't know what to do!
Lisa
Dear Lisa,
You mustn't think that your parents are wrong and you're right. Remember that
you're younger than they are and they want the best for you. So you must listen to
your parents and try harder.
Eric
Dear Lisa,
Please remember that your future is very important. You don't have to do
everything your parents tell you to do, and you don't need to worry too much about
maths — you don't have to be good at everything! Talk to your parents again and try
not to get angry.

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to the nine o’clock Mystery Hour.
Today we’ll show you two British stories. We hope you’ll enjoy them.
About 900 years ago two green children arrived in a small village in south
England. Their eyes and skin were green and they spoke a strange language. They
were very tired and weak, so the people of the village looked after them. The boy died
a year later, but the girl grew strong and lived the rest of her life there. And her skin
colour turned back to normal day by day. Scientists say that sometimes of people
don’t have enough food to eat for a long time, their skin goes very pale and can turn
green.
Loch Ness(尼斯湖) is the largest lake in Scotland. It’s a very deep and cold
lake. For hundreds of years, people have talked about a monster(怪物) called Nessie
which lives in the lake. About seventy years ago, two people saw something moving
in the lake. They said that the animal was playing and rolling around in the water.
Since then many people say they have seen the monster. Their descriptions are always
the same. It looks like a dinosaur, with a very long neck and a small head. It has a big
bump(肿块)on its back. People have tried to photograph the animal, but the pictures
have not been very clear. Scientists don’t know whether there is a monster or not.
Some say it may be a whale or a very large fish. Some think it’s a snake. Others say
there’s nothing at all— nothing but people’s imagination. Maybe we’ll never know
what’s in Loch Ness.

Choosing a career isn’t always easy, but there are still some tips you can take to
help make up your mind.
Don’t let other people decide what you should do.
Sometimes adults may want you to become a doctor, or work in banking, or be a
teacher. Listen to them, but remember it’s your life and it’s your decision. 11
{#{QQABDYaQggCgABAAAAgCEwVqCgGQkBAAACoGhBAEIAABCANABAA=}#}
Consider what you are good at.
It’s true that things like salary are important, but don’t let them lead you down the
wrong path. Follow your heart and your personality. 12 If you don’t like
work which needs lots of attention to detail, think long and hard before you decide to
do something like applying to study engineering at university. Your first decision isn’t
forever.
13 They start a job, love it straight away and stick at it. But it isn’t always
like that. So remember that you are allowed to change your mind. It’s not necessary to
worry for years. Maybe your first job doesn’t turn out to be suitable for you. Maybe
the right job for you is right around the corner!
14
Some people choose their career simply because they think they’ll make huge
amounts of money. OK, if that is what you want. But, generally, people get more
satisfaction out of their career if they feel they are doing something valuable for
others. It doesn’t have to be charity work. 15 Just don’t forget that job
satisfaction isn’t only about money.
A.Do something of value.
B.Others can decide your future.
C.Some lucky people get it right first time.
D.So be sure that you are the one who makes that decision.
E.It could be a job that helps other people in the community.
F.If you are very active, don’t choose an office job, even if the pay is good.
