Once upon a time, in a little village called Charmington, there lived ashy and unconfident girl named Lily. Lily was a kind-hearted soul, but her lack of self-assurance(自信) often led her to doubt her own beauty and worth.

Everybody likes to laugh sometimes, whether at a funny joke, an amusing incident or a humorous photograph or sound. The great thing is that once we’ve had a good laugh, we feel happier. It would seem therefore, that bringing a bit of humour into more serious situations might be good for us.
Places like a humourless office or a tense classroom could sometimes need a good dose of laughter. I know that in my workplace, a bit of hilarity can go a long way towards making it a more enjoyable place to spend eight or so hours a day. Seeing the funny side of things can certainly lift our spirits and that in turn can make us feel better about what we’re doing.
Maybe we should get inspiration from Steve Carlisle, president of General Motors of Canada. When he walks around the firm’s Ontario headquarters he shares his sense of humour to bond (与……建立密切联系) with his staff. He says, “It can help people feel more relaxed, more comfortable and thus be more effective at what they do.” Humour can be used by teachers in the classroom too. It’s a good way to break the ice with students and create a more relaxed atmosphere which is good for learning.
But we have to be careful; not everyone laughs at the same things. While some of us may admire a work colleague or fellow student for their clever and well-told joke, others may consider them sarcastic(讽刺的), offensive or just an idiot!
According to Professor Schweitzer, from the University of Philadelphia’s Wharton School, a worker or boss who successfully uses humour is seen as both confident and competent, which in turn increases his or her status. He says, “Being funny is taking a risk, and being risky shows confidence.”
28. What does the underlined word “hilarity” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Humour. B. Horror. C. Stress. D. Time-off.
29. What can we infer from the passage
A. Bad jokes can have positive effects.
B. People are always admired for their jokes.
C. Humour can help employees get more effective.
D. Seriousness can have a bad impact on your health.
30. What do we know about Steve Carlisle
A. He likes telling jokes to his employees.
B. He uses his humour to break ice with students.
C. He often leaves his office to watch over his staff.
D. He considers humour a reflection of confidence and competence.
31. In which column will you probably find the text in a magazine
A. History. B. Lifestyle. C. Travel. D. Sport.

Starting this December, multiple popular Chinese apps and websites such as WeChat, Taobao and Douyin will be redesigned to make them more senior-friendly.
These redesigns are aimed at solving challenges faced by the elderly in using new smart phones. Specifically, the measures include: launching senior-friendly products with easy-to-use interfaces(界面); and improving the accuracy(精确度)of dialect-recognition systems to allow the elderly who can’t speak Mandarin(普通话) to use voice commands. Also, on apps set to “senior mode,” there will be no mobile advertisement, or any design that leads people to extra payments; and people over 65 will be able to reach a customer services assistant over the phone without the need to follow difficult voice instructions or type text through keypad(小键盘).

Last Saturday afternoon, our school organized a poll for the most beautiful Chinese characters. The top three Chinese characters with the highest number of votes are “love”, “dream”, and “benevolence”.
200 students and teachers, coming from all three grades, gathered in the school hall. They chose the characters that they think the most beautiful. Cold though it was, all of them showed great interest and enthusiasm.
The activity was highly spoken of, because not only did it provide a chance for students to get close to Chinese characters, but also it raised our awareness of protecting traditional culture.

There just isn't enough time available for everyone, so it's only possible to have a few true friends. The others will be playmates but they won't be close friends.” Hearing this Lily realized that although she was a good classmate, she had not been a true friend to anyone. She had tried not to argue with anyone and she had tried to pay attention to everyone but now she had found out that was not enough to create true friendships.
Lily decided to change her ways and thought how she could make true friends. Just thinking about that, she realized her mother was always willing to help her. She put up with all of Lily's dislikes and problems, she always forgave her and she loved her a great deal. Lily smiled from ear to ear. She realized that she already had the best friend anyone could ever want.
