In Australia, different people have different ways to have fun. They also have their own ideas about how to pass time.
Most children, about 80%, work hard in school because they have to take lots of exams. After school, they don’t want to stay at home reading books any more. Instead, they go out to play.
Some old people get up early in the morning. Then they go to the park to read newspapers. It helps them know what is happening around the world. In the evening, they would like to watch TV at home.
Young people enjoy having relaxing trips on weekends. They go to mountains to have a picnic or go to the forest to camp. They usually start on Friday and spend one or two days outside. We can get news from many places — TV channels (频道), radios, newspapers and the Internet. Now let’s look at two kinds of news: TV news and news on the Internet.
Many people like TV news because we can see and hear real people.
Also, TV news has better pictures and sound. Another advantage is that someone has already chosen the most important news. We just sit back and watch. However, TV news may not be updated (更新) as fast as that on the Internet.
As for news on the Internet, one big advantage is that we can see it at any time. The information is updated all the time. We can even share the page with others easily. But on a news website, the sound and videos are sometimes not so vivid (生动的) as what we can see and hear on TV.

13-year-old Alessandra talks about her favorite chat room (聊天室), Teen-Age.
I joined a chat room called Teen-Age last month. A classmate read about it in a magazine and told me all about it. She said it’s a really great way to make friends with people in other countries. And she was right!
Everyone in the chat room is a teenager. We share information about home life, music and films. Friends that I chat to often ask me about school life in Britain. One friend in Spain sometimes asks me to write the words of English songs for her. My favorite thing is finding out how to prepare food people eat in different countries.
Some of my friends in Teen-Age live on the other side of the world, so when I chat to them at lunchtime, it’s nearly midnight where they are. My parents like it that I have international friends, but they get annoyed if I’m chatting to people all evening. They always ask me to finish my homework first.
Many of my school friends have joined several chat rooms, but I won’t ever do that. I like the online friends I have now, so I’ll keep using Teen-Age. If I have friends in different chat rooms, it’ll be too hard to chat to them all.
16.Who told Alessandra something about Teen-Age

A TV program has become popular in China recently. It has made people all over China become interested in writing Chinese characters (汉字).
The increasing use of computers and smart phones has left most young people hardly able to write by hand. Many of them are even unable to remember the 10,000 characters used in daily life without electronic help.
CCTV started the Chinese Character Dictation Competition to improve the population’s handwriting skills. Contestants (参与者) on the show were school pupils, but it was found that 70% of adults in the audience (观众) were unable to remember how to write the words “chan chu”.
Because computers allow people to type characters simply by entering pinyin, they don’t need to remember how to write them. “The keyboard age has had a big influence on the handwriting of Chinese characters.” Guan Zhengwen, who designed and directed the show said. He added that he hoped to encourage people to keep it alive as an art form.
Hao Mingjian, an editor of a magazine, putting his heart into Chinese characters, said, “Learning Chinese characters goes on throughout your life. If you stop using them for a long time, it is very likely that you will forget them.”

Peking Opera
Peking Opera is one of the most popular styles of opera in China. This art form is a mixture(混合物)of music, singing, dancing and acting. Peking Operas mainly perform(表演)ancient stories and important historical events.
In Peking Opera, there are four main types of roles: Sheng, Dan, Jing and Chou. Sheng is the male lead, while Dan is the female lead. Most of the time, Jing is the male hero with his face painted. And Chou is usually the male character who always makes people laugh.
Peking Opera actors often have different colors of facial make-up and costumes(戏服). Red make-up often shows loyalty(忠诚). White stands for evil(邪恶), and black for honesty and strength. As for the colors of the costumes, high-ranking officials(高级官员)often wear red costumes while low-ranking officials often wear blue ones. And black costumes can be used for any role.
The music of the Peking Opera band is important to the performance. The musical instruments in the band can be divided into two types. The percussion instruments, such as drums, are called Wu Chang(武场). And the string instruments, such as the Erhu, are known as Wen Chang(文场). The actors can fight to the exciting music of Wu Chang, or sing to the gentle music of Wen Chang. The music played by the band builds up the atmosphere of the whole story. It helps strengthen the emotional expression of the characters. The music is so detailed that it can even match the movements of the actors’ eyes and fingers.
In 1919, Mei Lanfang, a master of Peking Opera, visited Japan. After he gave amazing performances successfully there, this traditional Chinese art form became known all over the world. It has made excellent contributions to the cultural exchanges between China and other countries. Today, you can see Peking Opera performances not only in China, but also in many international cities around the world.

“May we all be blessed with longevity. Though miles apart, we are still able to share the beauty of the moon together (但愿人长久,千里共婵娟),”wrote Su Shi, a poet during the Song Dynasty, in his well-known poem to his younger brother Su Zhe.
The moon is at its brightest on the 15th day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar (阴历). On this day, people celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival. It has been enjoying great popularity all over China.
In ancient China, that day was a harvest (收获) festival because crops (庄稼) were harvested during that period. It was a time for relaxation and celebration.
Just like Thanksgiving Day in Western countries, families also try to get together for the Mid-Autumn Festival in China. Usually, no matter how far away or how busy they are, people will try to return home for the celebration.
The Mid-Autumn Festival has its own special food just as other traditional Chinese holidays. People eat mooncakes with fillings such as sugar and eggs. The round shape of the mooncake makes it look like the full moon. The full moon and mooncakes stand for the family reunion (团聚).
With the beautiful moon up in the sky, people sit together, enjoy the full moon, eat mooncakes and fruits, share the stories, and express the best wishes for the family members and friends who live afar.
