It has been four years since Grandma Joy told her grandson that she had never seen the most beautiful views of America. Since then, they have gone on many cross-country trips.
Brad Ryan had been feeling tired of studying in a vet school when he visited his 85-year-old grandma in 2015. He hoped that spending some quality family time would help lift his spirits.
As he was telling his grandma stories of his travels, however, he was heartbroken to hear that she had never seen the ocean or mountains. Ryan then asked his grandmother if she would like to go hiking with him. Needless to say, she was more than happy to agree.
They have since visited 29 different national parks across America---from the Great Sand Dunes in Colorado to the Acadia National Park in Maine. “I love my grandma so much, and it’s just really giving me a lot of peace when she passed away. I can go back to these places, feel her spirit, and feel connected to her,” he added.

For 63 percent of Americans, coffee is one of their daily essentials. This number has been this high since 2017, according to the National Coffee Association. The rise of coffee is due to its numerous benefits like preventing DNA damage, but it works best if you do this simple thing first: Eat.
“Drinking coffee on an empty stomach, or early in the morning before you’ve had breakfast, can raise the level of cortisol (皮质醇) in your body. From the moment you open your eyes in the morning, your body starts releasing cortisol. It’s a hormone (激素) that’s responsible for ruling your immune response, metabolism (新陈代谢), and stress response,” says Dr. Nikola Djordjevic, MD.
“If you pump your body with caffeine(咖啡因) when your cortisol is at its peak,” Djordjevic says, “you’ll be forcing your body to bear even more stress.” In a study that evaluated preference for caffeinated drinks among medical students, it’s shown that 25 percent of students drank coffee in the morning on an empty stomach.
These students are at an increased risk of mood changes and possible long-term effects on their health, as explained in the study. “Drinking coffee on an empty stomach can greatly encourage the acid in your stomach, producing a more acidic environment,” says Dr. Jamie Long, a licensed clinical psychologist. Thus, a full stomach is important to control the amount of stomach acid produced.
Since coffee increases your stomach acid, you’re highly likely to experience heartburn and even develop gastric ulcers (胃溃疡), Djordjevic says. Clearly, drinking coffee on an empty stomach affects physical health. But it does harm to mental health, too. The overproduction of acid in the stomach can cause mood swings, nervousness, shaking and other withdrawal symptoms (症状). “And if you’ve already had the sign of experiencing anxiety, you’re even more possible to be attacked by the effects of coffee,” says Long.
Base line: Know your limits so you can fully experience what coffee can offer, because here’s exactly what happens to your body when you drink coffee daily.
8. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 1 refer to
A. The coffee.

A. It can help to reduce our stress.
B. It will slow down our metabolism.
C. It might contain some kind of hormone.
D. It may increase the cortisol in our bodies.
10. According to Djordjevic and Long, the over- production of stomach acid can ________.
A. be good for our hearts B. make us feel less hungry
C. relieve our nervousness and anxiety D. harm our physical and mental health
11. What can be the best title for this text
A. Why so many Americans are coffee lovers.
B. What you can do to keep your stomach healthy.
C. Why you shouldn’t drink coffee on an empty stomach.

People say money doesn’t buy happiness, but how much money you make can affect the way you experience it
While it’s true that money can’t buy happiness, having money has certain benefits. For example, money can buy you time to do things that make you happier, and giving away some of your money can make you happier as well. Now scientists from the University of California at Irvine have found that how much money you make may impact (影响) how you experience happiness; higher earners are more likely to experience positive emotions focused on themselves, while lower earners are more likely to experience positive emotions focused on connecting with other people.
Scientists used data from an existing survey of 1,519 U.S. adults between the ages of 24 to 93, to be representative of the entire U.S. population. From the survey, scientist collected the household income of each person and analyzed how each person experienced the seven emotions that are believed to cause happiness: amusement, admiration, compassion, satisfaction, enthusiasm, love, and pride.
What they found was that higher earners were associated with the happiness-related emotions of satisfaction, pride, and amusement, all of which are self-focused in nature. Lower earners were associated with more other-oriented (他人指向) happiness-related emotions: compassion, love, and admiration. There were no differences observed with enthusiasm.
As to reasons for the difference, the researchers suppose that while pride and satisfaction may reflect upper class individuals’ desire for independence, increased love and compassion may help lower class individuals form more harmonious (和谐的), interdependent bonds to help deal with their more threatening environments. In other words, the researchers are not saying that one way of getting happiness is better than another, but rather that the way one obtains happiness may be a product of existing and coping within one’s particular circumstances.
12. What do higher earners prefer to do
A. Long to connect with others.
B. Spend more money on the poor.
C. Buy things to make them happier.
D. Pay more attention to themselves.
13. Why did the scientists study the seven emotions
A. They can make people happy.
B. They can be bought with money.
C. They are the most common feelings.
D. They are results of an existing survey.
14. Which emotions do lower-income people have based on the study
A. Pride and satisfaction.
B. Enthusiasm and amusement.
C. Admiration and compassion.
D. Compassion and satisfaction.
15. What can be inferred from people with different incomes
A. Those with lower income live a hard life.
B. They have different ways to get happiness.
C. Richer ones are happier than poorer ones.
D. Their happiness has nothing to do with money.
D 13. A 14. C 15. B

When things or people act in a certain way that is unacceptable to you, you get angry. Here are some things you can do to manage anger.
A lot of people have done things they regretted later because they acted in anger.(很多人因为愤怒而做了事后后悔的事)以及下文
Be silent until your anger dies down. Often you use words to express how you feel when you are angry. People have said things they didn’t mean to say. Stay silent when you are angry, which shows you have self-control.
Avoid people or issues that get you angry. Total avoidance is a very good strategy in managing anger.( 避免让你生气人或问题。 It is a good way of avoiding the negative outcomes of anger when there is little or nothing you can do to get rid of the source of your anger.
One good way to handle your anger is to find an exciting activity that you can join in. It could be listening to music, reading, seeing a movie or talking to someone.

固定短语from…to…“从……到……”,故填介词to。
【43题详解】
考查定语从句连接词。句意:他们前往风暴中心(或风眼),那里没有风,也寻找最强的风,帮助沿海地区的人们为即将到来的风暴做好准备。本句为定语从句修饰先行词center,且在定语从句中作地点状语,故填关系副词where。
【44题详解】
考查非谓语动词。句意:有时,他们会使用无人驾驶飞机收集更接近海洋表面的数据。本句为不定式to do作目的状语,故填to gather。

We often take for granted the very things that most deserve our gratitude.
Growing up, I wanted to be just like my mom. Kind and caring, she always seemed to make people comfortable in her presence. For years she was a volunteer in our community. I loved going to the local nursing home to help with her until I hit my preteen years. Suddenly, I was too caught up in my adolescent world to worry about helping others.
One particular summer day when I was twelve, Mom came into my room and told me to get up and meet her at the car. I had planned to spend the day at the lake with friends. Why did she have to ruin everything Eventually, I made my way outside. I imagined the lake water cooling my skin. Annoyed, I climbed into the car and slammed the door shut. I sat in silence, too upset to make a conversation.
“Tasha, would you like to know where we are going ” Mom asked calmly.
“I guess…,” I murmured under my breath.
“Sweetheart, we are going to a children’s shelter, I have been there before and I think it would benefit you,” she explained.
I felt a knot slowly form in my stomach. How was I supposed to help there
When we reached the shelter, I was rather surprised. It was a large white Victorian home. As we approached the large front porch, wind bells played a calming tune while trees and blossoms welcomed us. Maybe this wasn’t going to be so bad.
Mom rang the doorbell. The door flew open and we were led to the front room, where all of the children were playing. Toys were spread out across the floor. I noticed a baby whose body was scarred with wounds. The majority of the children had noticeable physical scars(伤疤) such as cuts, scratches and burns. What a terrible life they had before they moved here! My heart sank.
As I was looking around, I felt a gentle pull on my shirt.____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I returned to the shelter with Mom several times._______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
As I was Looking around, I felt a gentle pull on my shirt. I looked down to see a little girl with brown eyes looking up at me. Her angelic face beamed, though, as I could see, there were some scars on her little arms. “Hi. I’m Ashley. You wanna play dolls with me ” she asked. I looked over and saw Mom nodding to me with a smile. I bent toward Ashley and whispered, “Sure. I’d love to.” Her tiny hand reached up and took mine, and we walked toward the doll house. Our time together brought her great joy and fun and she also made my day.
I returned to the shelter with Mom several times. During those visits, some of the children including Ashley shared their troubled pasts with me in great detail. I felt sore for what had happened to them and treasured the friendship between us. I would like to do everything in my power to help the children there. At the same time, I learned to be grateful for all that I had. It was a profound time in my young life that I will never forget. It was Mom who taught me the valuable lesson that summer.
通读全文首先要解决好五个W和一个H的问题, 即理清人物who、地点where、时间when、事件what、原因why及怎样发展how。
I looked down to see a little girl with brown eyes looking up at me. I felt sore for what had happened to them and treasured the friendship between us.

Over the four years, Ryan and his grandma have driven 25,000 miles through 38 states. And it has greatly affected his quality of life. “Seeing it through my grandmother’s eyes, who every morning wakes up and is thankful to be alive has taught me how to live,” Ryan said. “With her, I’ve had to slow down and see life in a different way, which has made it a lot richer.”
“I love my grandma so much, and it’s just really giving me a lot of peace when she passed away. I can go back to these places, feel her spirit, and feel connected to her,” he added.
Ryan posted all of their trips on Facebook. He hopes more young people will spare time to be with their elders. “I want young people to know that hanging out with your grandparents is cool. And there’s so much we can learn from our elders,” Ryan said.
4. Why did Brad Ryan visit his grandma in 2015

For 63 percent of Americans, coffee is one of their daily essentials. This number has been this high since 2017, according to the National Coffee Association. The rise of coffee is due to its numerous benefits like preventing DNA damage, but it works best if you do this simple thing first: Eat.
“Drinking coffee on an empty stomach or early in the morning before you’ve had breakfast, can raise the level of cortisol (皮质醇) in your body.

C They are the most common feelings.
D. They are results of an existing survey.
14. Which emotions do lower-income people have based on the study
A. Pride and satisfaction.
B. Enthusiasm and amusement.
C. Admiration and compassion.
D. Compassion and satisfaction.
15. What can be inferred from people with different incomes
A. Those with lower income live a hard life.
B. They have different ways to get happiness.
C. Richer ones are happier than poorer ones.
D. Their happiness has nothing to do with money.
