Kindness comes in many forms. That thought is behind the new website,A Gift of Kindness, which promotes sharing stories of good deeds, all in memory of Captain Sir,Tom Moore, who passed away at the age of 100.
Being a hero of the pandemic,Moore decided to raise money for the National Health Services(NHS) in England. On April 6,2020,at the age of 99,Moore promised to raise £1,000 by his 100th birthday. In the course of 24 days,Moore made media appearances and became a beloved popular figure, attracting more than 1.5 million individual donations. Finally,Moore raised £ 32.79 million for the NHS.
Now,Moore’s family is making his spirit a lasting effect by building a website called A Gift of Kindness. The idea came to Sir Tom’s daughter Hannah Ingram-Moore while she was eating with her family around the dinner table on a recent evening, according to The Washington Post. They were discussing how Moore’s fans continued to send warm wishes.
Since the website started on December 8,2022,thousands of entries have poured in.Ingram-Moore picks each one and posts some of them to the site.“The website passes on Moore’s spirit serving as a message board for telling stories of kindness, and sharing joy and hope with others by recalling any small gift of kindness towards you or someone you know and how that feels,” the website states.“This has traveled across the Atlantic,” Ingram-Moore said in The Washington Post. The stories emphasize that “the things we do every day have a huge impact”.

We’ve all done it.For many of us,it’s something that happens so naturally every day. After working on an important project or a task for a little while, you decide to take a break—only to pick up your smartphone and start looking through social media, reading emails, checking out the news and maybe getting in a quick round of “Candy Crush Saga”.A break is supposed to be a time to relax so that you can go back to your work feeling fresh. However,a new study finds that cellphone use during a mental break doesn’t really allow the brain to relax and can actually result in a poorer performance.
For the study,a group of 422 undergraduate students at Rutgers were assigned a set of 20 word puzzles to complete.Halfway through the task, the students were separated into three groups:one group took a break and were told to use their cellphones to go shopping online, another group took a break and were instructed to shop either via their computers or using a paper circular(印刷品广告),and the third group didn’t take a break at all.
Interestingly, the group that took a break with their cellphones displayed the highest levels of mental fatigue(疲劳),and had the hardest time solving the word puzzles following their breaks. In all,the cellphone group took 19% longer to finish the puzzle task, and solved 22% fewer problems than participants in the other two groups combined.
“The act of reaching for your phone between tasks,or the mid-task,is becoming more common. We assume it’s no different from any other break—but the phone may carry increasing levels of distraction(使人分心的事) that make it difficult to return focused attention to work tasks,” explains Terri Kurtzberg.
8.Why do people turn to smartphone after a big task
A.To get relaxed.
B.To keep informed.
C.To achieve help.
D.To make a phone call.
9.How was the study conducted
A.By asking questions.
B.By interviewing lots of people.
C.By studying different lifestyles.
D.By studying different ways of breaks.
10.What does the study suggest
A.Breaks are unnecessary.
B.Students are addicted to smartphones.
C.Smartphones distract people’s attention.
D.Paper circulars improve work efficiency.
11.What might be the purpose of the author
A.To share a story.
B.To present a finding.
C.To solve a problem.
D.To prove a theory.

Nowadays with the development of technology, people have gradually depended on the mobile phones seriously. Many people, especially young adults, like to use social media to connect with others. However, everyone takes no notice of an important point. That’s face-to-face communication between people is missing.
Social media is all about connecting with others. But a new study suggests that too much social media use makes people feel alone and lonely. The study finds that heavy use of platforms such as Facebook,TikTok,and Instagram leads to isolation among young adults.
In the study Brian Primack and his team interviewed 1,787 U.S.adults aged 19 to 32 about their use of social media platforms.Surprisingly, people that spend more time on social media feel lonelier than others.
Tom Kersting,a psychotherapist(心理治疗师),said “Although people think being on social media all the time makes them connected to others, they are actually disconnected, because the more time one spends behind a screen, the less time one spends face-to-face.” Kersting continued,“They are spending a lot of time looking at everyone else’s posts, where they are, where they are going and what they are doing. The constant connection to others’ perfect life experiences causes feelings of being left out,and of being lonely.”
So what’s the answer “It’s simple,” says Kersting,“All you need to do is to have a strong will. The solution to this is to refuse the addiction to looking at everyone else’s life.Just focus on your own life, where you’re going, what you are grateful for,and what you want to achieve in this world. Then go out and do it,and stop wasting so much time comparing.”
12.What can be known about young adults in paragraph 1
A.They feel forgotten by their friends.
B.They lack face-to-face communication.
C.They depend too much on social media for learning.
D.They can’t keep up with the development of technology.
13.What does the underlined word “isolation” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Addiction. B.Satisfaction.

B.Share one’s own perfect life with friends.

D.Concentrate on one’s own life rather than others’.
15.What can be the best title for the text

People United to Make a Difference
One year ago two lives were joined together with a common purpose. Both were unaware of that purpose until conversations were exchanged. It was discovered that both had a deep desire to make a difference in the lives of others. 1 However, they knew that reaching the masses would be impossible without a good plan.Baron Glass and Melinda Thomas worked out a plan to make this a reality.
Mr Baron Glass,Radio Show Host for The Smoking Glass Hour with Baron Glass,is the face and voice of a show. 2 Topics include, but are not limited to,politics, law, racism, voting rights, women’s rights, helping the poor and homeless, education, health issues, and much more.Special thanks to a team of volunteers who dedicate time each week to help with this project, and to Mr Ron Spikes of Waco 4 State Trail Ride Radio for allowing Mr Glass to carry his show on the network for one hour per week.
A few months later,a platform was created to carry Mr Glass’s messages on a massive scale. 3 WMAD is the all-new 24 hour global radio station.Together,we are now sharing the messages worldwide. The listener base has grown doubly within this short period of time.
4 Although people may have a desire to work or get involved in their own communities, there may be circumstances blocking some to do so.Our campaign allows everyone to get involved right from their own home by simply sharing the Make A Difference photos on social media.
People united together with determination, perseverance, and leadership can Make A Difference.
