一、阅读理解
Mao’er mountain is abundant in rare animals and plants. Inhabited by 2,484 species of plants and 345 species of vertebrates (脊椎动物), this place can serve as a natural gene bank. And surprisingly, a rare alpine wetland featuring evergreen broad-leaved trees has found a way of surviving in the dwarf forest at a high altitude.
The “Millennium Kiss” Wonder
It’s a miracle that two trees have existed together and grown for around a thousand years. It’s even more breathtaking to see the two trees gradually getting close to each other and having a little “kiss”. What a lovely sight it is in the natural beauty of Mao’er mountain!

Unable to hold back my curiosity any longer, I opened the beautifully wrapped present. It was a shiny, new laptop. I had scored straight A’s for my examination and this was my reward. I had always envied (嫉妒) my friends who were always exchanging news about “chat rooms” or “e-mailing”, which I knew nothing about. Now I was going to find out.
It started out simply enough. I was searching for some information online when I came across a social networking site. Soon I became attached to my new-found electronic friend. I began to spend more and more time on YouTube and became controlled by Facebook and Twitter. Whenever I was not accessing these social networking sites, I would be going through gossip (八卦) or fashion websites.
As time passed, I would lock myself in my room during weekends, refusing to come out and take part in family discussions. I preferred to stay connected to the “friends” online whom I had never met. Soon I was spending the early hours of the morning surfing the Internet. Sleep became broken naps and my grades at school also began worsening.
It was about this time that my parents started voicing their disapproval. I was asked to reduce my usage of the Internet. Yet, however hard I tried, I was unable to pull myself away. I was thirsty for just another click, or just another look at message board. Then one day, my father took away my laptop. I cried, shouted and even begged but in vain. Dad had made up his mind.
Over time, I realized that Dad and Mum had always wanted the best for me. That was when I decided to take the big step—to quit my internet addiction. Quitting was harder than I expected. But with strong determination, I knew that I would be able to do it. I promised my parents that I would turn over a new leaf.

Betting on the huge development potential of the agriculture, Li gave up her job as a white-collar worker in Beijing and moved back to her hometown to be an online marketer. She opened a store on an online sales platform, selling mushrooms, potatoes and rice.
Today, many farms in the country’s hinterland(内地)are developing fast, but they need more accessible channels to sell their products. “Over the past three years, our total sales volume has grown to more than 100 million yuan, leading to income growth for more than 1,000 rural families,” Li said. “It’s a business opportunity for me and also a good chance to help farmers earn more money.”
Jin Yi, in his 20s, is a new member of AI trainers. Just like a child learning to walk, AI needs trainers to constantly remind it of the right methods and human beings’ mindset. Through numerous data accumulation and practice, AI is able to recognize human beings’ languages.
In recent years, AI trainers have sprouted up across China as a result of the rapid development of new economic models(模式).“It’s estimated that there is a shortage of about 5 million skilled workers in the AI industry. Shanghai needs about 400,000 AI workers alone, but there are only around 40,000 students majoring in AI at colleges,” said Qiu Xin, Party Secretary of Fudan University.
“I believe our industry will see greater development in the future, along with the advancement of AI. I hope more graduates will join the industry and contribute to the development of AI,” Jin said.
In addition to creating more jobs, new technologies will help transform traditional industries, which will help create more new and higher-paying jobs in the coming years, said Li Chang’an, a professor at the Academy of China Open Economy Studies of the University of International Business and Economics.

A. More AI applications in our life. B. Changes in new industries.
C. Income growth for farmers. D. More new and well-paid jobs.
11.What is the main idea of the passage
A. New jobs are coming out as a result of new technologies.
B. People have preference for different professions.

Scientists have long wondered why humans scalps (头皮) are covered in hair even though we are far less hairy elsewhere. A new study suggests hair coming out of our heads may have developed to stop early humans’ brains from overheating.
“The brain is a large and very heat-sensitive organ that also generates a lot of heat,” says lead author Tina Lasisi. “So we figured that could be extremely important for early humans living in Africa under the hot sun.”
To better understand how hair can affect the temperature of the head, Lasisi and her colleagues placed three different wigs (假发) or no wig on a research manikin (人体模型). The manikin was heated to a body temperature of 35℃ and placed under hot lights. The scientists measured the temperature on the manikin’s head when covered with no wig and wigs that have straight hairs, loose curls or tight coils (卷) which are similar in thickness and color.
Under the lights heating at 30℃, the biggest difference in heat was between no hair and hair. The manikin head always became hotter, but adding the straight-haired wig reduced that heat gain by more than half compared to a head with no wig. The curled wig made the scalp area less hot than the straight-haired wig, and the tightly-coiled wig led to the coolest head.
Another experiment also done by Lasisi’s team aimed to simulate (模拟) sweat on the head by wetting the manikin. In this case, bald head cooled the most through evaporation of water. But cooling with sweat might not be that helpful overall, said Lasisi. Having hair lowered the amount of sweat required to balance the sun’s heat.
The study is a great leap forward about thinking why we have so much hair on our heads. But Lasisi acknowledges that the manikin doesn’t match human physiology perfectly and hopes that more research will be done to understand when and why different hair types evolved.
12.What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 2 refer to
A. The power of evolution.
B. Generating a large amount of heat.
C. The size of the human brain.
D. Protecting the head from overheating.
13.Why were hot lights used in the study
A. To act as the hot sun. B. To test the wigs’ quality.
C. To protect the manikins. D. To create a cozy environment.
14.What can we learn from the study
A. Man-made hair is mainly used for its decorative value.
B. Different hairstyles affect head temperature differently.
C. It is certain that hair is essential for protecting the head.
D. Hair can increase the need for sweating to cool the head.
15.What could be a suitable title for this passage
A. Human Brain Is Sensitive to Heat
B. Different Wigs Have Different Charms
C. Hair Helps Cool Down Our Heads
D. Human Hair Will Be Replaced by Wigs

I had just gotten back from school; I sat down on a table to do my homework. “Hi, Mom.” “Daniela, I need to talk with you.” “About what ” “Your dad and I have been thinking really hard about this, and you are getting a new sister.” “What, but what about me ” I asked. “I don’t want a sister. Don’t you love me ” “Yes, but...”
Without letting her finish, I rushed to my room crying. I closed my door and went to my bed. I had so much anger that I threw my glass cup on the floor. “What happened here ” Mom asked to herself. My mom came in a few minutes later. She said that the way I was acting wasn’t the right way to act. My mom started talking about how my new sister was having a really hard time. She said that her parents had unfortunately died in an earthquake, so she had to go to a foster(寄养的) home. A few days later, she got adopted(领养) by a family who treated her badly. They didn’t give her enough food or water and she had to do all the housework until one day she got tired of being treated poorly and escaped to a shelter, and that is where they found her. But whatever she said, I just couldn’t agree.
That night I had a terrible dream. I dreamed an earthquake happened and when the shaking stopped, my house and parents were nowhere to see. I became homeless and was brought to a farm, staying there with a horrible woman who never gave me food. Later I found an opportunity to run away from the farm.
