一、阅读理解
Tourists visiting La Gomera and EI Hierro in the Canary-Islands can often hear locals communicating over long distances by whistling — not a tune (曲调), but the Spanish language. The locals are communicating in Silbo, a whistled Spanish language.
Whistled languages are almost developed in rough, mountainous regions or in thick forest. That’s because whistled speech carries much farther than ordinary speech or shouting. As a result, whistled speech can be understood up to 10 times as far away as ordinary shouting. That lets people communicate even when they cannot easily approach close enough to shout. On La Gomera, for example, a few traditional shepherds (牧羊人) still whistle to one another across mountain valleys that could take hours to cross.
Whistled languages work because many of the key elements of speech can be produced in a whistle, says Meyer. We distinguish one speech sound from another by small differences in their sound frequency patterns. A long “e”, for example, is formed higher in the mouth than along “o”, giving it a higher sound.
To language scientists, such languages are more than just a curiosity. By studying whistled languages, they hope to learn about how our brains get meaning from the complex sound patterns of speech. Whisting may even provide a chance to know one of the most dramatic jump forward in human evolution (进化); the origin of language itself.
Despite their interest to both language experts and casual observers, whistled languages are disappearing rapidly all over the world, and some, such as the whistled form of the Tepehua language in Mexico, have disappeared. “Now you still find whistled speech only in places that are very, very remote, that have had less contact with modernity and less access to roads,” Meyer says.
Fortunately, there is still hope. UNESCO, the UN cultural organization, has listed two whistled languages, Silbo, and a whistled Turkish, as the world’s cultural heritage. Such attention can lead to conservation efforts.

4.What does the underlined word “conservation” mean in the last paragraph
A. Impression. B. Experiment. C. Protection. D. Graduation.
Zibo city in Shandong Province has unexpectedly become famous on Chinese social media since late February for its local barbecue specialty, and this trend continues as the local government takes the opportunity to promote tourism and consumption.
The latest promotion gives visitors free admission to 10 scenic spots in the city with their train tickets as long as their final destination is Zibo. This move followed another on March 31 under which the Jinan bureau of China Railway added a weekend special round-trip "barbecue tour" train between Jinan and Zibo.
Passengers who get on the train are greeted by a banner reading "Welcome to the Special BBQ Train" at the entrance of the train. Many also took videos and posted them on social media, drawing more visitors.
The barbecue is popular in China, but Zibo's barbecue has its own local features: It's made on a stove, and is served with flatbreads and dressings. The food is 70-80 percent cooked before it is brought to the table, where diners can finish cooking it on their own stoves. Diners are served with flatbreads, scallions and other dressings at the table so they are able to assemble their own barbecue parcels, in much the same way Peking duck is eaten.
The barbecue suddenly became famous after a group of college students shot videos of themselves enjoying a meal in Zibo and posted them on social media in late February. Since then, many people, mostly young, have come to the city from all over the country to try the dish.
On several streets, lines can be seen outside barbecue restaurants, which stretch for more than 100metres on the weekend.
"Zibo barbecue is bringing more and more people to the city, and the local government needs to think about how to promote the city as a whole, its culture and tourism, as well as its living and business environment," said Sun Xiaorong, an expert of tourism marketing and promotion. The trend will eventually end if the local government doesn't take proper follow-up measures, he added.

For most of my adult life, I’ve felt sightly ashamed—not of something I’ve done, but of something I haven’t. Although I’m an independent person who has been to numerous countries, I’ve never gone on an overseas holiday alone. I’ve traveled with my parents, partners, kids and other families. I’ve travelled with my bestie and joined tours where I knew no one but came out with lifelong friends.
But for a while, my failure to travel alone felt like a mistake. Solo travel is celebrated. I’ve seen a thousand pieces written by adventurous women who claim to have found themselves by crossing countries alone. Traveling solo makes you capable, they say. It pushed you out of your comfort zone. Every woman should travel alone at least once in her life!
And yet, I’ve never had an urge to do it. For one thing, I need a lot of people contact. A single day without meaningful conversation can leave me feeling depressed. Proper, engaging conversation is difficult when traveling alone. Even if you’re good at chatting with strangers, it isn’t always possible. I don’t want to worry about being alone on my travels. I want support and company during my adventures. I used to see this desire to be with others as some sort of flaw, but now I see it as a valid choice.
Traveling solo builds resilience. But so does life. I am a single parent raising three children while trying to juggle a career. I make endless decisions alone and deal with crises alone. I manage loneliness and fear. I don’t need to travel alone to build resilience. I have resilience in spades. I’m sure travelling overseas would push me further out of comfort zone. But you know what else pushed me out of my comfort zone Being single in a society that values marriage. Earning a living in a difficult industry. Dating men I’ve met on an app. My life is effortful enough. I don’t need my travels to be effortful too.
Travel is incredibly valuable, no matter what your stage of life. It teaches you how diverse the world is and how to appreciate your culture in relation to another. It broadens your horizons and gives you a new viewpoint.
And you don’t need a solo journey to become an independent woman. I assure you that life will get you there in the end.
9.What does the author feel a bit ashamed of
A. Her lack of independence. B. Her failure to travel overseas.
C. Not being adventurous enough D. Not having travelled on her own abroad.
10.Why is solo travel applauded by adventurous women
A. It is both relaxing and empowering. B. They can better appreciate different cultures.
C. They get to know themselves better. D. It forces them to face their deepest fear.
11.What does the author mean by saying “I have resilience in spades” in paragraph 4
A. She has had enough of resilience.
B. She doesn’t want to travel solo with spades.
C. She doesn’t need solo traveling to build character.
D. She has gone through many difficult things in life to have great resilience.
12.Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Walking out of comfort zone B. Resisting solo travel
C. Life is travelling solo D. Being an independent woman

六、读后续写
34.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
If you had to choose one word to describe Kevin, it might have been “slow”. He didn’t learn his ABCs as fast as other kids. He never came in first in the running races. However, Kevin’s smile was brighter than the sun in June; his heart bigger than the sky. Kevin’s enthusiasm for life spread quickly to others So when he discovered that the teacher, Randy, was putting together a boys’ basketball team, his mother could only answer, “Yes, you may join.”
Basketball became the center of Kevin’s life. At practice, he worked so hard that you’d have thought he was preparing for the NBA. He liked to stand in a certain spot near the free- throw (罚球) line and shoot baskets. Patiently, he stood there throwing ball after ball after ball, until finally it would get into the basket. “Look at me, Coach!” he’d shout to Randy, jumping up and down, his face just glowing with the excitement of it all. His teammates were also moved by Kevin’s perseverance, and they insisted on practicing with him.
Kevin and his whole team truly loved basketball. But just loving the game doesn’t help you win. More balls fell out of the basket than into it, and the boys lost every game that season by very large scores, except one: the night it snowed and the other team couldn’t make it to the game. At the end of the season, the boys had their last competition. As the last-place team, they drew the unfortunate spot of playing against the first-place team—the tall, undefeated first-place team.
The game went pretty much as expected, and near the middle of the fourth quarter Kevin’s team stood nearly 30 points behind. At that point, one of Kevin’s teammates called time-out. As he came to the side, Randy couldn’t imagine why the time-out had been called. “Coach,” said the boy. “I know that Kevin has never made a basket. But this is our last game and I think we should let Kevin make a basket to achieve his dream.” With the game completely out of reach, the idea seemed reasonable, so plans were made.

34.答案:
Every time Kevin’s team had the ball, Kevin was to stand in his special spot near the free-throw line and they would give him the ball. Kevin skipped extra high as he went onto the court. His first shot bounced around but missed. The player from the other team swiped the ball and took it down to the other end scoring two more points. At that moment, a clear tension and unease appeared on his face. But quickly he adjusted his mindset and got back into the game. As soon as Kevin’s team had the ball again, they passed it to Kevin who obediently stood in his place. But he missed again.
Kevin missed every chance with this pattern continuing a few more times, and the spectators finally figured out what was happening. Little by little people started to stand up and clap their hands. The whole gymnasium thundered with the clapping, hollering, chanting, “Kevin! Kevin!” The whole world was stopped, waiting and wanting for Kevin. Finally, after an infinite amount of tries, the ball took one miraculous bounce and went in. Kevin’s arms shot high into the air and he shouted, “I won! I won!” The clock ticked off the last few seconds and the first-place team remained undefeated. But on that evening, everyone left the game truly feeling like a winner.
