My Favourite Books
Jo Usmar is a writer for Cosmopolitan and co-author of the This Book Will series(系列) of lifestyle books. Here she picks her top reads.
Matilda
Roald Dahl
I once wrote a paper on the influence of fairy tales on Roald Dahl’s writing and it gave me a new appreciation for his strange and delightful words. Matilda’s battles with her cruel parents and the bossy headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, are equally funny and frightening, but they’re also aspirational.
After Dark
Haruki Murakami
It’s about two sisters—Eri, a model who either won’t or can’t stop sleeping, and Mari, a young student. In trying to connect to her sister, Mari starts changing her life and discovers a world of diverse “night people” who are hiding secrets.
Gone Girl
Gillian Fynn
There was a bit of me that didn’t want to love this when everyone else on the planet did, but the horror story is brilliant. There’s tension and anxiety from the beginning as Nick and Amy battle for your trust. It’s a real whodunit and the frustration when you realise what’s going on is horribly enjoyable.
The Stand
Stephen King
This is an excellent fantasy novel from one of the best storytellers around. After a serious flu outbreak wipes out 99.4% of the world’s population, a battle unfolds between good and evil among those left. Randall Flagg is one of the scariest characters ever.
1.Who does “I” refer to in the text
A. Stephen King. B. Gillian Flynn. C. Jo Usmar. D. Roald Dahl.
2.Which of the following tells about Mari and Eri
A. Cosmopolitan. B. Matilda. C. After Dark. D. The Stand.
3.What kind of book is Gone Girl
A. A folk tale. B. A biography. C. A love story. D. A horror story.
When you hear the word “birthmark”, you probably think of one of those black or brown spots that you have on your body. For me, it’s different — I have them on my lips and inside my mouth. I’m used to being asked, “What are those black marks on your lips ” When I tell people they’re birthmarks, they usually say, “That’s strange.” I used to consider them ugly. However, my mom calls them beauty marks.
In pictures, I used to hide my birthmarks by pursing(噘起) my lips so I wouldn’t have to deal with people’s questions. As I was growing up, people wore me out with them. Some people would ask me the same questions even before knowing my name. In society I feel like we judge people by their looks before their personality.
My birthmarks are caused by a genetic(基因的) condition from my mom’s side of the family. My mom’s mom has birthmarks on her lips, and my mom’s uncle and my uncle have some on their bodies. Every year I plan to have a procedure to remove them. But when imagining the process, I always get nervous and give up.
My cousin faces a similar challenge. She has a huge birthmark that takes up her whole arm. She’s never tried to hide it or change her appearance. Once, her grandmother told her that the birthmark looked extremely prominent and suggested that she should wear long sleeves more often. If my cousin had actually taken that suggestion, she wouldn’t be such a person as she is.
Inspired by my cousin, I am finally accepting who I am and now I don’t hesitate when someone asks me about them either. I say, “They’re beauty marks” and smile without pursing my lips.
4.How did the author feel when asked about the birthmarks
A. She felt excited to show her difference.
B. She felt annoyed to give others an answer.
C. She was scared to be made fun of by people.
D. She was bored to be faced with the question.
5.Who has the similar birthmarks like the author
A. Her mother. B. Her grandmother. C. Her cousin. D. Her uncle.
6.What can be inferred about the author’s cousin
A. She dislikes talking about her birthmark.
B. She never judges others by their looks.
C. She is more confident than the author.
D. She has taken her grandma’s suggestion.
7.What does the underlined word “prominent” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Brilliant. B. Obvious. C. Harmful. D. Impressive.
Does handwriting matter Not very much, according to many educators. However, scientists say it is far too soon to declare handwriting is not important. New evidence suggests that the link between handwriting and educational development is deep.
Children not only learn to read more quickly when they first learn to write by hand, but they are also better able to create ideas and remember information. In other words, it’s not only what we write that matters — but how.
A study led by Karin James, a psychologist at Indiana University, gave support to that view. A group of children, who had not learned to read and write, were offered a letter or a shape on a card and asked to copy it in one of three ways: draw the image on a page but with a dotted outline(虚线), draw it on a piece of blank white paper, or type it on a computer. Then the researchers put the children in a brain scanner and showed them the image again.
It was found that when children had drawn a letter freehand without a dotted outline or a computer, the activity in three areas of the brain were increased. These three areas work actively in adults when they read and write. By contrast, children who chose the other two ways showed no such effect. Dr. James attributes the differences to the process of free handwriting: Not only must we first plan and take action in a way but we are also likely to produce a result that is variable. Those are not necessary when we have an outline.
It’s time for educators to change their mind and pay more attention to children’s handwriting.
8.What do scientists mean by saying “it is far too soon to declare handwriting is not important”?
A. Handwriting is not very important to children.
B. Handwriting has nothing to do with education.
C. Handwriting should not be ignored at present.
D. Handwriting can not be learned in a short time.
9.What does “that view” in Para. 3 refer to
A. Children read quickly when they write by hand.
B. How we write is as important as what we write.
C. Children create ideas and remember information.
D.A group of students should know what to write.
10.Which is NOT the children’s task in the experiment
A. Copy the image on a page but with a dotted outline.
B. Draw the image on a piece of blank white paper.
C. Type the image directly on a computer.
D. Put a brain scanner and show the image again.
11.According to the passage, the author obviously _______ giving up handwriting.
A.is for B.is against C.is responsible for D. doesn’t care about
One of Britain’s most outstanding scientists says the growth in use of electronic tablets and smartphones is causing people to spend at least one hour less outdoors each day, so that they need to take regular vitamin D supplements(补充) to make up for the lack of sunlight they receive naturally.
Speaking at the Hay Literary Festival in Wales, geneticist Steve Jones said he himself was a follower to the cause and urged others to follow. “I never thought I would be a person who would take vitamin supplements, I always thought it was absolute nonsense. But now I take vitamin D every day. Today, because I knew the sun wasn’t going to shine, I took an extra one,” he said.
Exposure to UV light from the sun is the major source of vitamin D. However, people are spending less and less time outdoors in many areas. The problem is particularly serious in Scotland. “The Scots are the palest people in the world…for their entire body systems are crying out for vitamin D,” he said, adding that life expectancy in Scotland is two years shorter than in England or Wales. Multiple sclerosis(多发性硬化症), a medical condition which is often seen in northern Europe, is also higher in Scotland than in England.
Vitamin D helps with the absorption of Ca, which helps keep bones strong, and he said the fact that rickets, a bone disease, was making a comeback in Britain after nearly 50 years was another sign of how changing behavior patterns were bringing physical harm.
Jones admitted that concerns over the damaging effects on skin of long-time exposure to the sun were reasonable, but said sunlight was healthy and necessary for the human body, and could help in lowering blood pressure. “If you lie on the beach for an hour, you will drop your blood pressure by about 10 points, because it relaxes your blood vessels(血管). So, get out in the sun while we still can.” He said.
12.How are people affected by the rise of technology according to the passage
A. They are more sensitive to sunlight. B. They take more medicines.
C. They get less vitamin D than before. D. They become addicted to electronic games.
13.What’s Jones’ attitude towards taking vitamin D supplements
A. Skeptical. B. Cautious. C. Worried. D. Supportive.
14.Why are the Scots the palest people in the world
A. Because they are in great need of sunlight.
B. Because they don’t’ have sunlight at all.
C. Because their blood pressure is very low.
D. Because they are easy to suffer multiple sclerosis.
15.What may be the best title for the text
A. Get out and gain more Vitamin D
B. Head for the beach and enjoy sunshine
C. Keep away from tablets and phones
D. Say no to vitamin D supplements

根据第一段中的“For me, it’s different-I have them on my lips and inside my mouth”(对于我而言,这是不同的-我嘴唇上和嘴巴里面都有胎记。)

Then the researchers put the children in a brain scanner and showed them the image again.(一群孩子,他们没有学会读和写,都被提供了卡片上的字母或形状,并被要求将其以三种方式之一复制:在页面上绘制图像但虚线轮廓,画在一张空白的纸,或在电脑上输入。
根据最后一段的“It’s time for educators to change their mind and pay more attention to children’s handwriting.(是时候让教育工作者改变他们的想法,更多地关注孩子们的书写了。)”
根据第一段中的“One of Britain’s most outstanding scientists says the growth in use of electronic tablets and smartphones is causing people to spend at least one hour less outdoors each day, so that they need to take regular vitamin D supplements (补充) to make up for the lack of sunlight they receive naturally.(英国一名最杰出的科学家表示,电子平板电脑和智能手机使用的增长导致人们每天在户外的时间减少了至少一个小时,因此他们需要定期服用维生素D补充剂,以弥补他们自然吸收的阳光不足。)”
根据第二段中的“geneticist Steve Jones said he himself was a follower to the cause and urged others to follow. “I never thought I would be a person who would take vitamin supplements, I always thought it was absolute nonsense. But now I take vitamin D every day.(遗传学家Steve Jones说,他自己也是这一事业的追随者,并敦促其他人也追随他。
14.答案:A
根据第三段中的“The Scots are the palest people in the world…for their entire body systems are crying out for vitamin D(苏格兰人是世界上肤色最苍白的人…… 此处需理解“cry out for”当于“in great need”,意为“迫切需要”。再结合第三段第一句阐述的事实“Exposure to UV light from the sun is the major source of vitamin D.(暴露在太阳紫外线下是维生素D的主要来源。)”,以及第三段中的“people are spending less and less time outdoors in many areas. The problem is particularly serious in Scotland(人们花在户外的时间越来越少。 故选A。
15.答案:A
通读全文,文章开头讲现在电子设备使人们在户外时间越来越少,天然维生素D摄入越来越少,危害健康,以苏格兰人日晒少,脸色苍白,维生素D缺乏导致缺钙的严重性,后面讲述科学家支持补充维D,尤其是最后一段中的“If you lie on the beach for an hour, you will drop your blood pressure by about 10 points, because it relaxes your blood vessels So, get out in the sun while we still can(如果你在沙滩上躺上一个小时,你的血压会下降10点左右,因为它会放松你的血管。
16.答案:①-⑤EGBFC
解析:①根据下文“No one can speak the words on your lips and not everyone is going to agree with what you say.(没有人能说出你想说的话,也不是每个人都同意你说的话。)”
②根据下文“If you don’t have faith in yourself, you will always doubt yourself and turn to others for help every time you have to make a decision.
根据下文“Our parents care for us so much that they do everything in their power to raise us in a fair and just environment. But the real world does not follow the same principle.(我们的父母非常关心我们,他们尽其所能在一个公平公正的环境中抚养我们。
④根据上文“You might be treated badly for all sorts of unfair things: your skin color, your height, your weight, how much money you have, and just about everything else that makes you who you are.
⑤根据上文“Stop worrying about other people’s opinions about your life, whether they are thinking about your clothes, your choice of career, or your choice of significant other.(不要再担心别人对你生活的看法,不管他们是在考虑你的衣服,你对职业的选择,还是你对重要的人的选择。)”

37.答案:①longer②to see③dying④is⑤than⑥that \which⑦causes⑧strengthen⑨energetic⑩it
故填is。
此处a study是先行词,其在定语从句中作主语,故填that或which。
此处give it a try意为:试试。 故填it。

One day, when I lived in Germany, I decided to go shopping and I into downtown. I was very pleased because I found a parking space immediately. It was rather unusual. I did my shopping, only took half an hour and I went back to my car. To my horror, it was no longer on the ground but it was in air. I really did not know what to do at that point I went to the police station. The were very kind to me. They told me I parked into the entrance to a car park and as a result, could get out of the car park. Then I wanted to laugh and at the same time. It made me .
固定短语in the air:在空中,故在air前加the。
cry和laugh是并列的动词,共用一个to,构成want to do结构,因此cried应该使用动词原形,故将cried改为cry。

I’m Li Hua, a student in Senior Three. I’m writing to apply to be a volunteer to serve teachers and students from our sister school in America during the ceremony of our school’s 71st anniversary, which is to be held next month.
I think I am qualified for this job. Out-going and fluent in English, I can communicate with them well. Besides, having studied here for three years, I am familiar with both our campus and the school history. What’s more, after the college entrance examination, I will have abundant time to prepare for it. If I am lucky enough to be chosen as a volunteer, I can show them around the campus and get them to know more about our school.
