Mum was born in a small village, which is famous for the art of paper folding, and Mum learnt how to make paper animals. In 1967, Mum went to Beijing, where she met Dad. They went to the suburbs of Connecticut later. Not knowing English, she was lonely until I was born.
When I was young, Mum liked to make paper animals for me. She folded up the paper, then lifted the paper packet to her mouth and blew into it. There in her hands was a little paper tiger. It seemed that the little tiger shared her breath. This was her magic. At my request, Mum also made a goat, a deer and even a shark.
Mark, one of the neighbourhood boys, came over with his action figure. I brought out the paper tiger. Mark examined the wrapping-paper pattern of the tiger’s skin.“That doesn’t look like a tiger. Is it a toy ” I had never thought of that. But looking at it, it was really just a piece of wrapping paper.
Later, Dad bought me a full set of action figures. I packed the paper animals in a shoebox and put them into the corner of the attic. Once in a while, I would see Mum at the kitchen table making new paper animals. I caught them, pressed and then put them away in the box in the attic.
Mum was also trying to learn to speak English, but her accent and broken sentences embarrassed me. I tried to correct her, but in vain. Eventually, I stopped talking with her. For years, I paid no attention to Mum until one day my dad called and told me that Mum was in hospital. Dad and I stood, one on each side of Mum. She turned to me, “Jack, just keep that box with you, and you will find it so important.”
She died several days later. The house was too big for Dad and had to be sold. My girlfriend Susan and I went to help him pack and clean the place.
Susan found the shoebox in the attic.

I unfolded the paper tiger and found several lines of Chinese characters written by my mother.

Ⅰ.My Sports Meeting Experience
Last Friday, our school held a sports meeting in the school stadium, which turned out to be extremely rewarding.
I like sports and participated in the 1500-metre race. Having kept practicing hard for three weeks, I made full preparations for it, which enabled me to stand at the starting line for the final. Unfortunately, I fell behind others soon after the start. I tried to run faster but fell to the ground, with blood running out of my knees. I struggled to my feet and kept on running. Painful as I felt,I stuck to running to the end.It was a pity that I lost the match. But I’m not regretful because keeping up to the end is much more important than winning the game.
Ⅱ. Susan found the shoebox in the attic. It was covered with dust. Susan cleaned and removed the cover. The paper animals hidden in the darkness of the attic for so long had been dusty and the bright paper patterns had faded. Susan held the paper animals carefully and admired. She was amazed at them,“I have never seen such creative works. Your mum was an amazing artist.” In my memories, the paper animals would jump and run. But now I found they couldn’t move. I picked up the paper tiger.
I unfolded the paper tiger and found several lines of Chinese characters written by my mother. But I could not read Chinese. I only recognised the word “son” in Chinese. I knew it was a letter to me written by my mother. I posted the photo of the letter on the website in hope that somebody could read it for me. In no time it received some comments. One translated it into English. Reading the letter, I couldn’t help sobbing. Through my misty eyes, I read,“wo ai ni, baobei.” which means,“I love you, my son.” I cried out,“I love you, Mum. I miss you, Mum.”组合练(二)

Just like on every break, Asiri would go with his uncle to his workshop, who made costumes for elephants! Asiri had been asking to help make the costumes. But he’d been told he was too little to sew the fine stitches (缝线) needed for the costumes.
Waiting for Uncle Thad, Asiri smoothed his practice piece beside him. Across it he had sewn, pulled out, and resewn stitches just as Uncle Thad had taught him. He couldn’t wait to show it to his uncle.
When his uncle finally came over, Asiri leapt from his seat. “Look, Uncle,” said Asiri, holding up the stitched cloth. “These are fine stitches, Asiri,” said Uncle Thad. “Just right to fix sequins (亮片).” Together they walked to the workshop.
Uncle Thad and his team were busy making the costumes. They had to be ready for Esala Perahera, the biggest festival held in the city of Kandy. Since the elephants were the stars of the parade, their costumes had to be dazzling. He especially loved the sequins sewn on them that made them sparkle.
Uncle Thad, his team, and now Asiri, would finish the costumes. Asiri hoped he’d get to sew a sequin onto the costume for the most important elephant in the parade. After lunch, Asiri was putting away a piece of cloth when his uncle called,“Asiri Please bring me the box of golden sequins.”
Here was his chance, thought Asiri. He’d bring the box to Uncle Thad and then ask to sew one on. Uncle Thad was sure to say yes. Asiri lifted the box from the shelf but turned a little too quickly, and the box was turned over, leaving the golden sequins on the floor. Uncle Thad turned to stare—first at Asiri and then at the golden sequins. Asiri felt his cheeks turning red. Now, Uncle Thad would never let him sew a single sequin on the costumes this year. Asiri dashed out of the door, down the street, and all the way back home. Hearing the rush of his footsteps, Asiri’s mother came to the door.
“What’s wrong, Asiri ” asked his mother.

Reaching the workshop, Asiri found the sequins were still there.

Ⅰ.Dear Jack,
Knowing that you’re interested in our school’s Innovative Lantern Show, I’m writing to share something about it.
Last Saturday evening, hundreds of lighted lanterns, all of which were students’ self-made works, were hanging between the trees on campus, getting viewers into a fantastic world. Additionally, the variously shaped lanterns were all made of recycled waste such as plastic bottles or cardboard, serving as a reminder for us to protect the environment.
The impressive show amazed everyone present. It inspired us to add innovation to our traditional lantern culture, promote our creativity and develop our hands-on skills.
Yours,
Li Hua
Ⅱ. “What’s wrong, Asiri ” asked his mother.“I spilled the sequins!” he blurted, almost in tears. “Did you clean them up ” she asked. “No,” Asiri answered. “Go back and clean them up,” she said with a wave of her hand, “Uncle Thad will expect you to.” Asiri shook his head. But he knew it was only right to clean up a mess he’d made. It was one of Uncle Thad’s workshop rules. Hearing mother’s words, Asiri knew what he should do. He walked towards the workshop with heart in his mouth.
Reaching the workshop, Asiri found the sequins were still there. They lay scattered across the floor, waiting for him. Asiri gathered the sequins into a pile and swept them into a dust pan. Carefully, he shook it, separating the dust from the sequins. Only when the last sequin slipped into the box did Asiri glance up. Uncle Thad stood in the doorway with his arms crossed. Crossing the room, he squeezed Asiri’s shoulder. “Good workers always clean up after themselves.” He clapped his hands, “Now, come. There are costumes to finish and sequins to sew.”“应用文+读后续写” 能力升级练

It was going to be my first day at Rainbow Middle School. Everyone else was coming back from winter holiday, but I was going to be new in this school.
After getting out of my mother’s car, I looked around and noticed that kids were gathering around in the hallways with their friends, whispering and giggling. Not knowing anyone and having nowhere to go, I decided to just wait outside until the bell rang.
I was standing outside Mrs Everett’s classroom reading a novel named Oliver Twist, when I glanced back to find someone looking over my shoulder.“Are you new here Anyway, I absolutely love the novel! It’s one of my favourite novels. By the way, I’m Macy!” the girl said.
I was about to answer when the bell cut me off. Shyly, I entered the classroom to find Mrs Everett smiling and she led me to a seat. Once everyone came in and sat down, Mrs Everett called me up to the front and introduced me to the class. As I scanned their faces, I noticed that they looked bored and didn’t seem to care about me. I returned to my seat and listened to the teacher for the rest of the class.
The lunch bell rang and I got out of the classroom, checking my backpack for my lunch. Scanning the lunch tables, I was nervously wondering where I should sit when I saw Macy approaching me.“Hey, if you want, you can come and sit with us.” Macy offered as she pointed to a pink table near the classrooms. Feeling happy, I glanced over where she was pointing and followed her over. Suddenly, my shoelace untied at that moment. Then I knocked into Macy and dropped my lunchbox. I said sorry and picked up my lunchbox. With my head low, I was afraid the other girls at the table would laugh at me.
To my surprise, they started comforting me.

After school, I waited for my mother to pick me up at the school gate.

Ⅰ.Dear Michael,
Our school is going to have a cooking course this term. Knowing you are an enthusiast of Chinese food, I heartily recommend it to you.
The course is arranged on every Wednesday afternoon from 5:00 p.m.to 6:00 p.m. We can learn basic knife skills, food decorating and traditional cooking methods. Meanwhile, we will have fun exchanging cooking experience and sharing food together. What’s more, we can pick various organic vegetables grown on our school farm when preparing for a dish. I’m sure the course appeals to you.
Looking forward to your reply!
Yours,
Li Hua
Ⅱ. To my surprise, they started comforting me. Some of them came up to me and asked if I was OK. One even kindly offered me her lunch. At that moment, I realised that I really had had a misunderstanding of them. At first, I had thought they didn’t care about me. However, they got along well with me. We had a really happy time having our lunch together.
After school, I waited for my mother to pick me up at the school gate. My new classmates all greeted me when they passed me. Macy stopped and said she’d like to make friends with me. I agreed happily, and we talked much and surprisingly found we lived in the same community. When my mother arrived, we two started our journey home, and we’ve been going home together every day since then.
