Mum was born in a small village, which is famous for the art of paper folding, and Mum learnt how to make paper animals. In 1967, Mum went to Hong Kong, where she met Dad. They went to the suburbs of Connecticut later. Not knowing English, she was lonely until I was born.
When I was young, Mum liked to make paper animals for me. She folded up the paper, then lifted the paper packet to her mouth and blew into it. There in her hands was a little paper tiger. It seemed that the little tiger shared her breath. This was her magic. At my request, Mum also made a goat, a deer and even a shark.
Mark, one of the neighbourhood boys, came over with his action figure. I brought out the paper tiger. Mark examined the wrapping-paper pattern of the tiger’s skin.“That doesn’t look like a tiger. Is it a toy ” I had never thought of that. But looking at it, it was really just a piece of wrapping paper.
Later, Dad bought me a full set of action figures. I packed the paper animals in a shoebox and put them into the corner of the attic. Once in a while, I would see Mum at the kitchen table making new paper animals. I caught them, pressed and then put them away in the box in the attic.
Mum was also trying to learn to speak English, but her accent and broken sentences embarrassed me. I tried to correct her, but in vain. Eventually, I stopped talking with her. For years, I paid no attention to Mum until one day my dad called and told me that Mum was in hospital. Dad and I stood, one on each side of Mum. She turned to me, “Jack, just keep that box with you, and you will find it so important.”
She died several days later. The house was too big for Dad and had to be sold. My girlfriend Susan and I went to help him pack and clean the place.
Susan found the shoebox in the attic.
I unfolded the paper tiger and found several lines of Chinese characters written by my mother.

Ⅰ.Dear John,
Knowing that you have trouble learning the Chinese pronunciation, I think it doesn’t matter. After all, it’s difficult for foreigners to grasp it. However, some practical approaches are of great help.
Obviously, it is highly recommended to refer to the dictionary when you come across a challenging Chinese character. Then, with mobile phones catching on, some Chinese learning apps are increasingly popular because they are so handy that you can acquire the pronunciation quickly.
I am sure that you will make much progress in learning Chinese pronunciation. It is welcome to write to me when you are in trouble.
Yours,
Li Hua
Ⅱ. Susan found the shoebox in the attic. It was covered with dust. Susan cleaned and removed the cover. The paper animals hidden in the darkness of the attic for so long had been dusty and the bright paper patterns had faded. Susan held the paper animals carefully and admired. She was amazed at them,“I have never seen such creative works. Your mum was an amazing artist.” In my memories, the paper animals would jump and run. But now I found they couldn’t move. I picked up the paper tiger.
I unfolded the paper tiger and found several lines of Chinese characters written by my mother. But I could not read Chinese. I only recognised the word “son” in Chinese. I knew it was a letter to me written by my mother. I posted the photo of the letter on the website in hope that somebody could read it for me. In no time it received some comments. One translated it into English. Reading the letter, I couldn’t help sobbing. Through my misty eyes, I read,“wo ai ni, baobei.”, which means,“I love you, my son.” I cried out,“I love you, Mum. I miss you, Mum.”组合练(一)

It was going to be my first day at Rainbow Middle School. Everyone else was coming back from winter holiday, but I was going to be new in this school.
After getting out of my mother’s car, I looked around and noticed that kids were gathering around in the hallways with their friends, whispering and giggling. Not knowing anyone and having nowhere to go, I decided to just wait outside until the bell rang.
I was standing outside Mrs Everett’s classroom reading a novel named Oliver Twist, when I glanced back to find someone looking over my shoulder.“Are you new here Anyway, I absolutely love the novel! It’s one of my favourite novels. By the way, I’m Macy!” the girl said.
I was about to answer when the bell cut me off. Shyly, I entered the classroom to find Mrs Everett smiling and she led me to a seat. Once everyone came in and sat down, Mrs Everett called me up to the front and introduced me to the class. As I scanned their faces, I noticed that they looked bored and didn’t seem to care about me. I returned to my seat and listened to the teacher for the rest of the class.
The lunch bell rang and I got out of the classroom, checking my backpack for my lunch. Scanning the lunch tables, I was nervously wondering where I should sit when I saw Macy approaching me.“Hey, if you want, you can come and sit with us.” Macy offered as she pointed to a pink table near the classrooms. Feeling happy, I glanced over where she was pointing and followed her over. Suddenly, my shoelace untied at that moment. Then I knocked into Macy and dropped my lunchbox. I said sorry and picked up my lunchbox. With my head low, I was afraid the other girls at the table would laugh at me.
To my surprise, they started comforting me.
After school, I waited for my mother to pick me up at the school gate.

Ⅰ.Learning A New Skill
This summer, I decided to learn photography, and it turned out to be an amazing experience.
Having researched different cameras and techniques, I enrolled in an online course to learn the basics of composition and lighting. Challenging as it was at first, with practice and determination, I made progress gradually. During the learning process, I encountered difficulties like understanding manual settings and capturing the perfect shot. However, instead of giving up, I sought guidance from experienced photographers who helped me overcome the challenges.
Learning photography has allowed me not only to see the world from a different perspective, but also to appreciate the beauty in everyday life.
Ⅱ. To my surprise, they started comforting me. Some of them came up to me and asked if I was OK. One even kindly offered me her lunch. At that moment, I realised that I really had had a misunderstanding of them. At first, I had thought they didn’t care about me. However, they got along well with me. We had a really happy time having our lunch together.
After school, I waited for my mother to pick me up at the school gate. My new classmates all greeted me when they passed me. Macy stopped and said she’d like to make friends with me. I agreed happily, and we talked much and surprisingly found we lived in the same community. When my mother arrived, we two started our journey home, and we’ve been going home together every day since then.组合练(二)

After a long day, Zhang Tian finally got back to his small room, feeling tired. He had started working at seven in the morning, and it was eight in the evening now. He had to prepare his lessons for the following day. This is a typical day for Zhang Tian. Coming to Guizhou Province to teach has been quite an experience for him.
Zhang Tian graduated from university and got a teacher’s certificate last year. His parents, like most, hoped he would go to a big city to find a teaching job. Likewise, his friends all left his hometown for work in Shanghai or Beijing. Zhang Tian felt differently, however. He wanted to start a new lifestyle. He had met wonderful teachers from small villages during his early school years and he was inspired by them to go and teach where he was needed the most. For that reason he applied for and became a volunteer teacher in a village school. Bringing with him lots of books, clothes, and two pairs of trainers, Zhang Tian travelled to the village with an eager heart. He imagined all sorts of exciting things about living independently and teaching in a village.
However, not everything lived up to Zhang Tian’s hopes. The school had just three teachers and Zhang Tian was the only English teacher. The other two local teachers were responsible for maths and Chinese. The school was much smaller than he had expected, with only three classrooms. In front of the classrooms, there was a playground which got dusty on windy days and muddy on rainy days. Living in the village was also more challenging than he had thought. The power and water supplies were unstable, so he could only shower every three or four days, and he had to learn how to cook.
The thought of leaving once flashed through his mind.
Zhang Tian’s first service year is almost over.

Ⅰ.Dear Jack,
Knowing that you’re interested in our school’s Innovative Lantern Show, I’m writing to share something about it.
Last Saturday evening, hundreds of lighted lanterns, all of which were students’ self-made works, were hanging between the trees on campus, getting viewers into a fantastic world. Additionally, the variously shaped lanterns were all made of recycled waste such as plastic bottles or cardboard, serving as a reminder for us to protect the environment.
The impressive show amazed everyone present. It inspired us to add innovation to our traditional lantern culture, promote our creativity and boost our hands-on skills.
Yours,
Li Hua
Ⅱ. The thought of leaving once flashed through his mind. If he returned to big cities, he would live comfortably and get highly paid and his parents would be happy. But he gave it up and managed to find ways to deal with the challenges. To make school life colourful for his students, Zhang Tian introduced more interesting subjects. What makes him most satisfied is that his students are able to read, speak and write in English and become confident in learning the language.
Zhang Tian’s first service year is almost over. What should he do next He can choose to return to big cities where he can achieve his value. However, looking at the eyes of the children and thinking the poor life of the villagers, he decides to do something more. He will teach the villagers how to sell local products online so that they can improve their living conditions, which he thinks will be of benefit to children’s life. After a long consideration, he chooses to stay for another year.
