2. Which hobby do you think takes up the

take up意为“占据”。它作此义讲时,既可表
示占据空间,也可表示占据时间。例:It won’t
take up much of your time.这不会占去你太多时
间。
【拓展】take up 还可意为“开始从事;学习”。
例:He took up writing after graduation.他毕业后
开始从事写作。
These documents take up too much space.这些文

3. Come in and find somewhere to sit down. 
(1) somewhere既可作代词,也可作副词,意为“某
处;(在)某个地方”。它多用于肯定句。
例:I've seen her somewhere before.我以前在某

(2)句中的动词不定式to sit down作后置定语修
饰somewhere。
例:I'd like something to eat. 我想要点儿吃
的东西。

句中have a look(=take a look)意为“看一
看”,其中look为名词,意为“看,瞧”。
have a look相当于动词look,如果后面接
宾语,需要加介词at。
例:Let's look at that photo.= Let's have a

【拓展】note的其他用法:
① n. 笔记; 便签。短语: take notes做笔记。

6. They must be really valuable. 
(1)must用在肯定句中,意为“一定”,表示某

value的用法:
①作名词,意为“价值;有用性”。短语:be
of value(=be valuable)有价值的。
②作动词,意为“ 重视,珍视;估价”。
例:The painting has been valued at £60 000.这
张画被估价6万镑。

David’s hobbies
Many students have hobbies, such as reading, painting, growing vegetables and looking after animals. Some hobbies are relaxing and others are active. Hobbies can make you grow as a person, develop your interests and help you learn new skills.
3. Read the passage and answer the questions.
David Smith is a student, and one of his hobbies is writing. During the summer of 2010, he spent four weeks at a summer camp. As well as the usual activities, such as sailing and climbing, there was a writing class. “The teacher was a writer, and she asked us to talk about our lives and tell interesting stories.
Then she encouraged us to write about our experiences at the camp.”
Back at school, David wrote a story about the life of a sixteen–year–old boy, and it came out as a book in 2012. Many young people love his book, and as a result, David has become a successful young writer.
David has been very lucky because his hobby has brought him pleasure and success. But writing is not his only hobby. He is also interested in many other things. “I like playing volleyball too,” says David. “I spend some of my free time playing volleyball for my school team. Maybe I’ll write about my volleyball team in my future books.”

Language points

others作代词,表示泛指,意为“其他的人或物”,表示除去一部分以后的另一些,但不是剩下的全部,有“列举未尽”的意味,常和some搭配,构成some... and others...结构。例:There are some people in the park. Some are playing chess,others are dacing. 公园里有一些人,一些在下象棋,另一些在跳舞。

(1)make在该句中用作使役动词,它的用法主要有以下三种:make sb./sth. do sth.使某人/某物做某事;make sb./sth.+adj.使某人/某物……;make+sb./sth.+n.使某人/某物成为……
例:We all made her our monitor.我们都选她当班长。The news makes me happy.这则新闻让我很开心。
(2)【辨析】person、man与people
①person指具体的“人”,为可数名词,没有性别之分,常和数词连用。例:There are two persons in the meeting room. 会议室里有两个人。
②man指“男人”,有时也泛指一般的“人”,为可数名词。例:Her father is a handsome man. 她的父亲是一个帅气的男子。
③people作可数名词时,意为“民族,种族”,其复数形式为peoples;作集合名词时,泛指“人”,作主语时谓语动词用复数。例:How many peoples are there in your country?你的国家有多少个民族?
(3)interest作名词,意为“兴趣,爱好”。常用搭配:show/take an interest in...对……表现出/感兴趣;lose interest in...对……失去兴趣;with interest有兴趣地。
例:I lost interest in maths last term. 上学期我对数学失去了兴趣。Her main interests are music and tennis. 她的主要爱好是音乐和网球。

(1) during 在……时间内, 在……期间。例: Some shops open at night during the Christmas.一些圣诞期间,一些商店在夜间营业。
(2)spend花费。它指花费时间或金钱,其主语为人。常用搭配:spend money / time on sth.在某事/物上花费金钱/时间;spend money / time (in) doing sth. 花费金钱/时间做某事。例:I spent 10 years writing the book.我花了10 年时间在(写)这本书上。
【辨析】spend、 take、pay与 cost
三者都表示“花费”, 但用法有区别。
①spend通常表示花费时间或金钱,其主语为人。
常与on或in连用。
②take表示“花费”时,常用于句型“It takes / took
sb. some time to do sth.”中。
③pay指花费金钱,其主语为人,常与for连用。常用
搭配: sb. pay some money for sth.
④cost表示花费金钱,其主语为物。短语:sth. cost
(sb.) + some money.

(1) as well as 也, 还, 除……以外还有; 而且。它用
来连接并列成分。连接并列主语时, 谓语动词与
前一主语保持一致。
例:We all want to visit Beijing as well as
Shanghai. 我们都想参观北京和上海。
He as well as his friends likes playing football. 他和
他的朋友都喜欢踢足球。
as well as 与 not only…, but also…的区别
①A as well as B表示“A和B”,是强调A。
②not only A but also B 表示“不但A, 而且B”,
是强调B。
例:The teacher as well as the students is
coming to see you. 老师和学生们要来看忘你。
Not only the teacher but also the students are coming
to see you.不仅老师,学生们也会来看望你。
(2)activity作名词,意为“活动”。其复数形式
为activities。常用搭配:outdoor activities户
外活动。例: The club provides a wide variety
of activities,including tennis,swimming
and chess. 这家俱乐部的活动丰富多彩,包括
网球、游泳和国际象棋。
(3)sailing作名词,意为“航海,航行”。例:I
want to join the sailing club. 我想加入航海俱
乐部。
6. David wrote a story about the life of a
sixteen-year-old boy, and it came out…
(1)句中“about the life...boy”为介词短语,作后置
定语修饰story。例:It's a book about flowers.

(2)come out 本句中表示“出版;发行;发表”,

新书什么时候出版?The answer to the question

(1)as a result 意为“结果”, 表示后面的句子与
前面的句子构成因果关系, 前面是因,后面是果 。
例:He works hard, as a result, he got a good mark
in the exam. 他学习很努力,因此他在考试中取得了

【链接】so 作连词,意为“因此,所以”。它表示
结果,既可位于句首,也可位于句中。位于句中时,
其前常有逗号,但其后一般不加逗号。例:As a
result,a strike began.=So a strike began. 因此发
生了罢工。
(2)become作系动词,意为“成为,变得”。其后可
接名词、形容词作表语。例:He became a
teacher at the age of 25. 他25岁时当了老师。
The weather became warmer. 天气变得更暖和了。

合句。because引导的原因状语从句常置于主句之

(2)bring sb.sth.= bring sth.to sb.意为“给某人带来
某物”,例:The waiter brought him some

(3)pleasure作名词,意为“愉悦,快乐”。它常
与介词in、of连用。例:He takes no pleasure
in his work. 他从他的工作中得不到丝毫快乐。
常用结构:
①(It's) my pleasure不客气,很乐意效劳。这是当
对方表达谢意时的一种礼貌回答。
②with pleasure当然了,很愿意(效劳)。表示客气
地接受或同意,用来回答对方的请求。
③It's a pleasure to do sth.很高兴做某事。例: It's
a pleasure to meet you. 很高兴见到你。
④It gives sb.great pleasure to do sth.某人很荣幸做
某事。例:It gives me great pleasure to introduce
our guest speaker.我很荣幸来介绍我们的特约演
讲人。
(4)success作名词,意为“成功”。表示抽象意义的
“成功”时,是不可数名词;表示具体意义的
“成功的人或事”时,则是可数名词。

当 play后接表示球类的名词时, 该名词前不加任
何冠词; 但当 play后接表示乐器的名词时, 需要
在该名词前加上定冠词the。

英语的基本句型
1. 主语 + 谓语(不及物动词) (+ 状语)
例:The water is boiling. 水开了。
They have been waiting there for hours.

The flags are waving in the wind.

2. 主语 + 系动词 + 表语 (+ 状语)
例:This machine is in good condition.

3. 主语 +谓语(及物动词) + 宾语 (+ 状语)
例:I want a cup of coffee.

4. 主语 + 谓语(双宾动词)+ 间接宾语 + 直接宾语

一些间宾可改成由to引起的短语, 表示动作向谁;
一些间宾可改成由for引起的短语, 表示动作为谁。
5. 主语 + 谓语 (及物动词)+ 宾语 +
宾语补语(+ 状语)
例:President appointed John manager of
marketing. 总裁任命约翰为营销部经理。
We elected Mr. Smith our chairman. 我们选史
密斯先生做董事长。
表示独一的头衔、职位或身份的名词作宾语补足语
时不用冠词。
6. There be +主语 + 状语
例:There is a pen and two books on the desk.

A British boy has become one of the youngest people to sail alone across the Atlantic Ocean. Seb Clover has a fantastic and exciting hobby — sailing. He sailed his 9.8-metre-long boat 5,000 km from Tenerife to Antigua.

afraid. But I still enjoyed every moment.
