Life seems long when we’re looking ahead, and so short when we’re looking back. That’s especially true for a mother. One day you’re holding a two-month-old baby, wondering if he’s ever going to stop crying. And the next day you’re seeing him off at college, wondering if he’s ever going to call you.
Where does the time fly I want my children to grow up, but I don’t want to let them go. The grown children can be as much fun as little ones. Here are two examples:
When my father-in-law died, I called my younger son Nate to say I’d drive up to Yosemite, and we’d drive out the next day to attend the funeral. It was snowing when I stopped in the park. The next morning, Nate and I left early, only to get stuck behind a bus
3
with a flat tyre, blocking the road. We sat for five hours in a blizzard(暴风雪) waiting for the road to be cleared. Meanwhile, Nate entertained me with jokes. I will never forget it.
A few years later, I flew to New York to visit my elder son Josh. That night, Josh began having pain in his right side. We took a cab to a hospital and he had an operation. Afterwards, I stayed for a week to take care of him. We watched movies and ate take-out meals. I will never forget it.
Being a mother doesn’t end when our children grow up. We still want to protect them, just as we did the day they were born. And grown children will always need a mother. At the same time, we’ll always need our grown-up children to make us laugh and keep us young and fill that place in our heart that only they can fill.
24. Why does the author feel that life is short
A. Because she wants to express that time goes by very quickly.
B. Because she wants to show how hard it is for a mom to raise a child.
C. Because she wants to explain grown children are different from the little children.
D. Because she wants to describe the author’s anxiety when her children left home. 25. What does the underlined word “blocking” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Protecting. B. Widening. C. Stopping. D. Surrounding.
26. Why does the author mention her stay with Nate and Josh
A. To describe the differences between her two sons.
B. To tell us how to communicate with different children.
C. To show grown children are wiser than little ones.
D. To prove both the grown and the little children are fun.
27. What does the author want to tell us from this article
A. Grown children want independence instead of protection.
B. Communication is important for a mom and her children.
C. A mother’s love is selfless and forever.
D. A mother and her children will always need each other.
C
Health and fitness help a person live a good and healthy life. Often due to various pressures, we tend to ignore our health. This makes our body suffer and we will catch other diseases. It is the fitness level of our body that helps us fight these diseases.
Health and fitness are interrelated to each other. We need to be fit to have a healthy body.
Similarly, if we are healthy we shall naturally be attracted towards maintaining the fitness of our body. Health is the state of our body at a given time. We may not have any disease but still have a weak body, which is ready to be targeted by viruses. For instance, we may have a tendency to catch a cold easily. This does not definitely mean that we are not healthy. It means the fitness level is not in accordance with our age and the climatic conditions we live in.
4
It is important for everyone to devote some time to health and fitness. There are some activities which everyone should do in our life. For instance, we must exercise daily regardless of our age and working style. There are different levels of exercises for different age groups and we must do them according to our own health and age.

Living and dealing with kids can be a tough job these days, but living and dealing with parents can be even tougher.
If I have learned anything in my 16 years, it is that communication is very important, both when you disagree and when you get along. With any relationship, you need to let the other person know how you are feeling. If you are not able to communicate, your relationship drifts apart. When you are mad at your parents or anyone else, not talking to them doesn’t solve anything.
Communication begins with the concerns of another. It means that you can’t just go home from school, go up to your room and talk to nobody.Even if you just say “Hi” and see how their day is for five minutes, it is better than nothing. If you look up the word “communication” in the dictionary, it will say “the exchange of ideas, conveyance(传递) of information, correspondence(通信), means of communication;a letter or message” . To keep a good relationship, you must keep the communication strong. Let people know how you feel, even if it’s just by writing a note. When dealing with parents, you always have to make them feel good about how they are doing as parents. If you are trying to make them see
5
something as you see it, ask them politely to listen to you. Shouting or walking away only makes the situation worse.
Here is an example. One night, Sophie went to a street party with her friends. She knew she had to be home by midnight after the fireworks, but they didn’t feel she could just ask to go home. That would be rude. After all, they had been nice enough to take her along with them. Needless to say, she was late getting home. Her parents were mad at first, but when Sophie explained why she was late, they weren’t as mad and let the incident munication was the key factor here. If Sophie’s parents had not been willing to listen, Sophie would have been in a lot of trouble.
Communication isn’t a one-way deal.It goes both ways. Just remember:if you get into a situation like Sophie’s, telling the other person how you feel and listening are key factors to communication.
32. The second paragraph mainly talks about .
A. the importance of friendship B. making your feelings known to others
C. the importance of communication D. the disagreement between generations 33. The key to happy relationship between parents and children is that .
A. children should always obey their parents
B. parents play the leading part
C. parents should mind their own business
D. both should make the other know their feelings
34. The example in the passage proves that .
A. Sophie’s parents were willing to listen to her
B. Sophie was very polite to her parents
C. Sophie did the right thing when she explained the reason of her being late D. communication is the key to solving misunderstanding
35. All of the following statements are true EXCEPT .
A. ifyou don’t agree with others, you’d better let them know
B. it is better to say “Hi” to others than to say nothing
C. ifyou are too busy to communicate, just walk away
D. communication is a two-way deal

What to Do When You Fail in Life
Most people are afraid of failure. The truth is that everyone, including all successful people, has ever failed time after time and will fail again. 36
Learn from it
No matter how hard you try to avoid (避免,逃避) it, failure will happen. Having a “no
6
fear” attitude towards failure does not mean you should expect to fail, but accept it when it. happens. 37 Failure makes us rethink, reconsider, and find new ways and strategies to achieve our goals. Through failure, we will get to know ourselves better.
Stop fearing it
38 You are supposed to push yourself to go to the limits. When you have a no-fear attitude and accept failure willingly, your determination can be made the best use of.
Let go of your self-worth
When your self-worth is in charge, you will not learn from the mistakes you have made, be open to other people’s views or see the situations clearly. 39 We need to learn, evaluate, and listen to other people if we want to see what needs to change in order to succeed.
Improve your mood (情绪) and cheer up again
We all feel upset after having failed, which is natural, human, and unavoidable. But how we respond to our failures is what decides our road to success. One way of improving your mood is listing the things you are grateful for at the moment, which will strengthen your
positive emotions. 40
A. There is value in failure.
B. The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.
C. The ordinary people experience failure, too.
D. It always tends to get in the way of you and your success.
E. In order to reach your personal best, you don’t need to fear failure.
F. So do not be afraid of failure, which is a part of your road to success.
G. Reading stories of successful people is another way to help us cheer up and move on.
