M: I don’t think that’s anything to be concerned about here. There is no lake and I haven’t seen a single fly.
W: You might be able to fish in the river.
M: Well, let’s not think about that. We need to see the rest of the apartment and decide if we can afford it.

air-conditioning today is cheaper than it was 10 years ago On the other hand, electricity is more expensive.
W: I didn’t know that. How much difference is there

The modern American holiday of Mother’s Day was first celebrated in 1908. It is on the second Sunday in
May. It is a day to honor mothers. On that day mothers usually receive flowers and cards. On the cards, children
often write, “Thanks, Mom”, “To the best mother in the world” and so on. Then where did the idea for the holiday
come from We should thank Miss Anna Marie Jarvis. It is she who brought up the idea of having such a day. She
lived in West Virginia. Anna’s mother was a peace activist who cared for wounded soldiers on both sides of the
Civil War and created Mother’s Day Work Clubs to address public health issues(问题). Her mother died on May
9th, 1905. On the anniversary of her mother’s death, she invited some friends to an informal memorial meeting. In
1907, a church service was held on her mother’s death anniversary. Anna’s love for her mother moved other people.
Besides, she wrote letters to important persons of the country suggesting a public holiday to honor all mothers. In
1914, the United States Congress agreed that the second Sunday in May should be appointed as Mother’s Day.
Finally, the decision was announced by President Wilson.

in a personal interview in 1985 that ‘he could tell a victim by the way she walked down the street, the tilt of her
head, the manner in which she carried herself, etc…’(最后一项尤为重要,因为根据《人际暴力杂志》的一项
The researchers secretly filmed 12 people walking — eight women and four
men, some of whom had been attacked before. Then, they showed the video to a group of criminals and asked them
whether or not each person would make a good victim.(研究人员秘密拍摄了 12个人走路的画面,其中 8名女性
Sure enough, the people whom the criminals picked as ‘likely victims’ were
usually the ones who had been victimized in the past. These people were often said to have ‘walked like an easy
So stride down the street like you own it. Your new, aggressive gait may
scare off criminals. And even if this study turns out to be total bullshit, you’ll still get where you’re going a lot

32. A 33. B 34. A 35. D
Administrative workers and lawyers are expected to be most affected, the

“几乎没有影响”相比,行政工作者和律师预计将受到最大影响)”可知,行政工作者和律师这些白领员工
受到的影响比建筑工作者和维修工作者高,所以结合选项,维修工受到的影响较小。故选 A。
While workplaces may shift, widespread adoption of Al could ultimately increase
labor productivity — and boost global GDP by 7% annually over a 10-year period, according to Goldman Sachs
Although the impact of AI on the labor market is likely to be significant, most
jobs and industries are only partially exposed to automation and are thus more likely to be complemented rather
故选 A。
As many as 300 million full-time jobs around the world could be automated in some
way by the newest wave of artificial intelligence that has made platforms like ChatGPT, according to Goldman

appropriate time and place.(等待合适的时间和地点。)”
When emotions are high, it can be easy to be swept in those feelings and want to get all your

G“Sometimes you need time to think and accurately express yourself.(有时候你需要时间
This allows you to see if there is any misunderstanding and allows you the time to understand his
words accurately.(这可以让你看看是否有任何误解,并让你有时间准确地理解他的话。)”
A“Ask questions if you need to and even repeat
what he has said.(如果需要,可以问问题,甚至可以重复他说过的话。)”
故选 A。
40.根据空前内容“Sometimes we feel the need to soften our words to lessen the blow.(有时我们觉得有必要软化
E“This could be because we
don’t want to hurt the other person.(这可能是因为我们不想伤害对方。)”

apologizing for her misunderstanding and introducing her mother to me graciously. The rest of the semester gave
us a valuable friendship, during which we practiced gestures attentively, wandered around the campus happily and

helped each other sincerely. However, I hadn’t expected the day of the farewell would come so soon! That was one
day before the end of the semester when we were playing badminton. I sensed something unusual in Rochelle.
All of a sudden, Rochelle was coming over to me, with her eyes watery and red. It shocked me, for we got
along well all the time. After my repeated inquiries, she finally told me the truth. She had to move to another city
with her parents for a better life. Hearing this, I was rooted in the court, mind going blank. However, I gave myself
a forced smile and hugged her tightly, saying nothing could weaken our precious friendship. Though reluctant,
what I could do was to offer my earnest wish to Rochelle. Such an unforgettable experience left me not only a
long-last friendship but the treasure of understanding, acceptance and appreciation.

A couple has recently placed their garbage can out for collection for the first time in 14 months, all thanks to their recycling skills. Richard and Louise Arnold have established such an effective routine that they only need to
put their garbage can on the side of the street once a year.
Louise explained that making small monthly changes in her life has resulted in her family producing very little waste. She said,"It's not as difficult as you might think ifyou start with small steps. We began with soap, switching from bath cream to natural soap without packaging. These bars are large enough that we cut them in half, using one
for the sink and the other half for the shower. It's both cost-effective and environmentally friendly."
"So it's actually quite easy. Just go around your house and think of little things you can do gradually, and you'll start noticing the difference,"Louise added. Currently, the couple takes recyclable waste to the tip, donates clothes
to charity shops, and brings soft plastics and batteries to a shop that accepts them.
In 2017,the couple established No Waste Living, which initially started as a weekend stall at the local market

“Don’t be a victim.” That’s a phrase you’ll hear a lot if you take a crime-prevention class. Basically, it means
that there are steps you can take to reduce the likelihood that you’ll be mugged, assaulted, or otherwise attacked.
Don’t wave your cash around like you’re a billionaire. Don’t be distracted on the subway. Walk with a purpose.
That last one is particularly important, because according to a new study from the Journal of Interpersonal Violence, some criminals are very good at sensing weakness based on the way you walk. Actually, serial killer Ted Bundy admitted in a personal interview in 1985 that “he could tell a victim by the way she walked down the street, the tilt of her head, the manner in which she carried herself, etc …” Unfortunately, research demonstrated the reality that criminals do in fact look for, or at least notice certain characters when selecting potential victims. While nothing excuses crime, knowledge is power in the sense that there are things we can do to protect ourselves when
we are out alone.
In the report titled “Psychopathy and Victim Selection” the researchers surveyed 47 criminals at a maximum -security prison in Ontario and found that social predators are very good at picking victims based on their posture and gait(步伐). They noted that people might be releasing vulnerability to criminals through their postures, gestures,
and exaggerated movements.
The researchers secretly filmed 12 people walking — eight women and four men, some of whom had been attacked before. Then, they showed the video to a group of criminals and asked them whether or not each person would make a good victim. These “victim ratings” were then compared against each person’s actual history of victimization. Sure enough, the people whom the criminals picked as “likely victims” were usually the ones who had been victimized in the past. These people were often said to have “walked like an easy target” — slowly,
unfocused, with short steps.
The sample size here is really small. Maybe we shouldn’t give this study’s findings too much weight. Nevertheless, it emphasizes something that seems pretty unconscious. Criminals aren’t looking for a challenge. Rather, they want someone timid and inattentive. So stride down the street like you own it. Your new, aggressive gait may scare off criminals. And even if this study turns out to be total bullshit, you’ll still get where you’re going
a lot faster.
28. Why does the author mention the serial killer Ted Bundy
A. To call on more people to learn psychology.
B. To prove that someone can be a natural criminal.
C. To demonstrate some skills to distinguish criminals.
D. To emphasize the importance of the right walking habit.
29. How did the researchers conduct their research on victim selection
A. By analyzing crime data in various neighborhoods.
B.By filming criminals as they selected their potential victims.

C. By filming people walking and getting criminals ’ opinions.
D. By studying the psychology of crime victims in a maximum-security prison.

A. Walking with a group of people cheerfully
B. Purposeful walking with slow steps.
C. Distracted walking with short steps.
D. Walking with confident and exaggerated movements.
31. What’s the author’s attitude toward walking confidently and aggressively
A. Doubtful. B. Favorable. C. Disapproving. D. Indifferent.

As many as 300 million full-time jobs throughout the world could be automated in some way by the newest
wave of artificial intelligence that has made platforms like ChatGPT, according to Goldman Sachs economists.
In a report Sunday, they predicted that 18% of work globally could be computerized, with the effects caused more deeply in advanced economies than emerging markets. That’s partly because white-collar workers are seen to be more at risk than manual laborers. Administrative workers and lawyers are expected to be most affected, the economists said, compared to the “little effect” seen on physically demanding or outdoor occupations, such as
construction and repair work.
In the United States and Europe, about two-thirds of current jobs “are exposed to some degree of AI
automation”, and up to a quarter of all work could be done by AI completely, the bank estimates.
Further use of such Al will likely contribute to job losses, the Goldman Sachs economists wrote. But they noted that technological innovation that initially displaces workers has historically also created employment growth
in the long run.
While workplaces may shift, widespread adoption of Al could ultimately increase labor productivity — and
boost global GDP by 7% annually over a 10-year period, according to Goldman Sachs economists.
“Although the impact of AI on the labor market is likely to be significant, most jobs and industries are only partially exposed to automation and are thus more likely to be complemented rather than replaced by AI,” the economists added. “Most workers are employed in occupations that are partially exposed to AI automation and, following AI adoption, will likely apply at least some of their freed-up capacity toward productive activities that
increase output.”
Of US workers expected to be affected, for instance, 25% to 50% of their workload “can be replaced,” the
researchers added. “The combination of significant labor cost savings, new job creation, and a productivity boost

for non-displaced workers raises the possibility of a labor productivity boom like those that followed the emergence
of earlier general-purpose technologies like the electric motor and personal computer.”

A. Repairmen. B. White-collar workers.
C. Administrative workers. D. Lawyers.

How to Have Open Communication
When you can communicate openly, you can start improving your relationships, both personal and professional, in a number of ways. 36 There are a few things that you can do when you have an open
conversation.
37 Be mindful of where and when you need to have a discussion with someone, especially if you
are having an important disagreement. Someone is not likely to be open when communicating if you are surrounded by family or out in public. Therefore, have a discussion when it’s more convenient for both you and
your partner.
Have patience. When emotions are high, it can be easy to be swept in those feelings and want to get all your points across. But this can make communication more difficult because you are so focused on your feelings that
you aren’t able to focus on what you need to say. Be patient and allow for silences that happen. 38
Take the time to listen to what the other person is saying. 39 This allows you to see if there is any misunderstanding and allows you the time to understand his words accurately. You don’t need to agree on all his
words, but it is important to understand where they’re coming from.
Be honest with your thoughts and your feelings. Sometimes we feel the need to soften our words to lessen the

blow. 40 After all, when we leave out certain details, we’re not able to communicate openly. You need to be honest with your partner about your needs and your experiences. By doing so, you’re hopefully closer to
being able to tackle the issue.

Looking over the top of the book, I glanced across at the new girl named Rochelle. She only joined our class at
the beginning of the week. It must be hard starting a new school in the middle of the year.
At last, the bell went for the end of the day. I spotted Rochelle running towards a tall woman who must be her
mum. Then I saw a surprising thing. Rochelle’s mum was waving her arms round and making shapes with her
fingers, and Rochelle was doing the same with hers. It was like they were talking to each other with their hands. Oh,
could her mother be deaf My mind was filled with questions.
The next day, I was reading this week’s words when I felt a tap(轻拍) on my shoulder. I looked up and
Rochelle was standing in front of me. “Shall we test each other ” she asked, pointing to my spelling book.
“Yes, of course,” I replied. But I was still wondering how to ask the questions that had been tumbling(翻腾)
around in my head since yesterday.

“Yes, both my parents are deaf, so I communicate with them through sign.”
“Oh, I'm sorry. That must be really difficult.” I could tell by the frown on Rochelle’s face that I’d said
something wrong, but I didn’t know what. “So, did your parents need someone to help them look after you when
you were a baby ”
“Of course not,” Rochelle got annoyed. “Why would being deaf mean they can’t look after me Being deaf doesn’t mean they’re stupid,” she was almost shouting. “In fact, they’re much cleverer than most people I know.” Hearing that, I got hot all over. I didn’t say her parents were stupid. But before I could explain, the bell went and
she strode(阔步行走) out of the classroom. I hurried after her, but when I tried to speak to her, she kept her back to
me as if I were her enemy.
