“My father had a saying that ‘First you must be a person, then an artist, and then a musician, and only then can you be a pianist,’” Mr.Fu Cong once recalled in an interview.“Even now,I believe in this order—that it should be this way and that I am this way.”

Scandinavian architecture is a relatively new construct that drew public attention within the last century. It tends to include works associated with Sweden,Denmark,Norway,Finland and Iceland, and it is undoubtedly one of the more influential styles in modern times.
The Scandinavian design style is both simple and comfortable, modern and historic.Home builders influenced by this style are expert at mixing traditional vernacular (民间风俗的) styles with modern technology to create a space that is beautiful and aims to make your life better.
Before the early 20th century, much of Scandinavian architecture was vernacular in nature.Homes were built in a simple way using locally sourced materials and knowledge. However,it can be argued that this lack of formal architectural schooling promoted more craftsmanship and creativity as time went on.These vernacular builders were more concerned with function than form.An early example of this is the turf houses in Iceland, which were homes with green roofs that could keep the house in comfortable temperature throughout seasons in an affordable way.
The modern-day version of Scandinavian architecture grew out of this grassroots approach to building.Public buildings originally mixed Neoclassical elements with traditional building styles based on local practices. In the 1930s,the concept of Functionalism was introduced in Scandinavia. With its inspiration, architects wanted the buildings to be simple, but they also wanted them to be beneficial to people in some thoughtful way.For instance, the Paimio Sanatorium that was built in 1933 focused on maximizing quality air and light for tuberculosis (结核病) patients. So while modern architecture is all about simple, clean lines,Scandinavian architecture is that and also a style of building that thinks about how public spaces and homes can be valuable to humankind.
28.What is a feature of Scandinavian architecture before the early 20th century
A.Practical function. B.Professional design.
C.Creative appearance. D.Recyclable materials.
29.What can we learn about the modern Scandinavian architecture
A.Modern technology is the biggest advantage of it.
B.Architects of this style focus on both simplicity and comfort.
C.The concept of Functionalism was rejected by Scandinavian architects.
D.Its appearance is different from that of other styles of modern architecture.
30.What is the author’s purpose of writing the text
A.To attract tourists to visit Scandinavia.
B.To show respect to Scandinavian architects.
C.To introduce an architecture style from Europe.
D.To encourage more people to major in architecture.
31.In which section of a newspaper may this text appear
A.Entertainment. B.Society.
C.Education. D.Culture.

Recordings(录音) of angry bees are enough to send big, tough African elephants running away,a new study says.Beehives(蜂窝) either recorded or real may even prevent elephants from damaging farmers’ crops.
Years ago, scientist Lucy King and her team found that elephants avoid certain trees with bees living in them.Today,Lucy wants to see if African honeybees might stop elephants from eating crops. But before she asked farmers to set up beehives on their farms, she needed to find out if the bees would frighten elephants away.
Lucy found a wild beehive inside a tree in northern Kenya and set up a recorder. Then she threw a stone into the beehive, which burst into life.Lucy and her assistant hid in their car until the angry bees had calmed down.Next,Lucy searched out elephant families in Samburu National Reserve in northern Kenya and put a speaker in a tree close to each family.
From a distance,Lucy turned on the pre-recorded sound of angry bees while at the same time recording the elephants with a video camera.Half the elephant groups left the area within ten seconds.Out of a total of 17 groups, only one group didn’t react to the sound of the angry bees.Lucy reported that all the young elephants immediately ran to their mothers to hide under them. When Lucy played the sound of a waterfall (瀑布) instead of the angry bees to many of the same elephant families, the animals were undisturbed.Even after four minutes, most of the groups stayed in one place.
Lucy is now studying whether the elephants will continue to avoid the sound of angry bees after hearing it several times. She hasn’t tested enough groups yet to know and she has now begun placing speakers in the fields to see if elephants are frightened away.

I had spent months practicing and the big day finally came.It was the day of the Alberta Music Competition. The music hall was packed with excited audience.I sat in the first row with my mother seated beside me.As the fellow competitors were playing,I couldn’t keep my mind on their music.I was just memorizing the notes and practising the fingerings.I had known my music was like the back of my hand. But this time,to my great surprise,I found my fingers completely out of my control. They kept shaking.I nearly burst into tears.Seeing this, mum held my hands tightly in hers. She even breathed into them as if she wanted to warm them up.Then she whispered to my ear,“Sweetie, take it easy.Just listen and enjoy the music.”
I looked up and turned my attention to the competitor in the center of the stage for the first time.A thin and tall boy was sitting at the beautiful red piano. He looked calm and confident. His fingertips danced on the keyboard. The soft and gentle sound of the piano flew in the air.For a moment,I totally forgot my nervousness.

第一节
Good morning,everyone,
My name is Li Hua.When it comes to music,we have our own stories. As for me,music actually offers me enough power to overcome shortcomings. When failing in the middle exam,I feel so upset that I refuse to communicate with my friends, even my parents. When I hear some inspiring songs, which gives me confidence,I gradually ignore the failure and spare no efforts to study hard. Finally,I make great progress in the final exam. From my experience,I hope that you can obtain the power which music offers to achieve your own dreams.
Thanks for listening.
第二节
Then I was announced to play next and I felt anxious again. It seemed that thousands of butterflies were really flying in my stomach. My mother gave me a pat on the back and said softly,“Just enjoy it,honey!” I found encouragement and confidence in her eyes.I got up,climbed up the stage steps and bowed to the audience.I tried my best to keep calm.I slowly placed my hands on the keyboard, took a deep breath and started to play.To my delight, everything seemed unbelievably smooth.
Suddenly my fingers slipped and I hit a wrong note.I could clearly feel the disappointment from the crowd’s deep sigh.“Just enjoy it!” Mum’s words echoed in my ears.I continued playing as if nothing had happened.Soon I found myself absorbed in the familiar music world again.Eventually, when I finished my last note, the crowd all stood up with applause and cheering, which was totally out of my expectation.Though I didn’t win the champion,I knew I had learned something more valuable.I realized that learning to enjoy music was more important than the competition itself. 第三单元测评

Pablo Picasso was born on October 25 in Malaga,Spain in 1881.Taking after his father,Picasso shared a passion(热爱) for painting and art.Even though he wasn’t the best student in school,Picasso excelled at drawing.Noticing his amazing talent,Picasso’s father,an artist, taught him everything he knew. Before long,Picasso could paint and draw much better than his father. With this rich talent,Picasso paid less and less attention to his schoolwork and spent the majority of his day sketching and drawing in notepads and sketchbooks.
When he was a little bit older,Picasso moved twice and was accepted into two fine art programs. However,he didn’t care very much for the special techniques they taught and often wandered the streets by himself drawing the scenes around him. After moving to these two places,Picasso moved back home to Barcelona and decided that he would develop new techniques of art and painting based on what he saw.
Later,Picasso decided to move to Paris,France, where he began perfecting his own techniques of painting, drawing and other forms of art.His drawings, paintings and art included pieces about sadness, poverty, classics and self-portraits.One of his major types of work is called cubism(立体派),which includes art with all sizes of geometric shapes together on the piece of art. This type of art is very important because no other artists had come up with the idea before.Picasso decided to try something new,and as a result, cubism is widely accepted today as a classic style of art.

Arun Kumar Bajaj has a very unusual skill — he can paint with a sewing machine.Technically,it’s embroidering, not painting, but his artworks are so detailed that they can pass as paintings to the untrained eyes. And the fact that he does it all with a sewing machine just makes that much more impressive.
Arun was really good at drawing and painting while growing up and dreamed of becoming a famous painter, but his father died suddenly 15 years ago, which destroyed his plans and forced him to give up school in order to run the family business. His father was a tailor and he became one too,but he didn’t let the artist in him die.He started “painting” with a needle and thread, but instead of using his hands,he decided on a rather unusual tool — the sewing machine. It took him a while to master this unique art form, but today he is recognized as the world’s only sewing machine artist. His works become very popular both in India and abroad. It’s easy to see why, just by looking at them, but what really makes his embroideries special is the tool he uses.
“You need to be very careful because once you’ve stitched the cloth, there’s no way you can repair it,” Arun said.“It’s all done in a single layer to give the painting a neat look.” Some of Arun’s most impressive works include a 4×2 feet painting of the court of Ranjit Singh which took the artist over a year to finish.Arun runs a tailoring business in the Adalat Bazar of Patiala, but he devotes a lot of his time to his artistic dream as well.

A.Arun’s wonderful life journey.
B.Arun’s most impressive works.

D.The world’s only sewing machine painter.

Claude Monet,Pablo Picasso and Leonardo da Vinci...the art world has never lacked talent. And now,a new painter is ready to join the list, although this one isn’t even human.
Next month, the auction house (拍卖行) Christie’s Prints and Multiples will make history by offering the first piece of artwork created by artificial intelligence (AI) for sale. The painting is a portrait of a man called Edmond, and is expected to be sold for up to $10,000.
The work, which features a man with a mysterious look on his face, was created by software developed by a French art group.Nicolas Laugero Lasserre,an art collector, called the work “strange but amazing”.This isn’t the first example of AI produced artwork,as AI has already been used to write poems and compose songs. However, many people doubt whether it should be called art at all.
According to Russian writer Leo Tolstoy (1828—1910),art is about creating emotion. It’s “a means of joining people together in the same feelings”,he once said.
So,if the emotion behind art is what makes it,the ability to create and use tools is what makes human beings different from other species. And as a tool itself, the AI technology used to create the portrait is the result of a lot of efforts made by several designers.Together, they “fed” the AI many paintings from the 14th to the 18th centuries, until it was able to work out how to make similar paintings of its own.
The introduction of AI art could be the beginning of a new artistic movement. However, not everyone is ready to welcome these high-tech artists.
“The human mind is what’s behind the AI technology. And the human mind is not a cold, hard fact,” said Oscar Schwartz,a professor of AI.“Rather,it is something that’s created with our opinions and something that changes over time.”
32.Why does the writer mention these famous artists in paragraph 1
A.To introduce talented artists’ works.
B.To make an advertisement for famous artists.
C.To explain a new art form—AI.
D.To introduce a new painter—AI.
33.What can we learn about the AI produced artwork according to paragraph 5
A.It results from human works.
B.It beats human artworks completely.
C.It expresses human feelings effectively.
D.It is beyond the imagination of humans.
34.What does Oscar Schwartz think of the human mind compared with the AI
A.Limited. B.Difficult.
C.Decisive. D.Meaningful.
35.What’s the main idea of this passage
A.An auction house will make history by selling AI artworks.
B.A great many artists think AI-produced artworks are amazing.

Ms.Clay, the art teacher, stood at the front of the room.“Class, next Friday our school is going to have an art competition,” she announced.Ms.Clay was a great teacher, and Lily liked her a lot.But this announcement made Lily nervous.“Everyone in the school will create a piece of artwork to show in the library. You can use the different types of artwork we have been studying.” Ms.Clay was quite excited when she spoke while Lily found herself sinking lower in her chair.
Lily had the whole weekend to work on her project, but she could not think of anything to do.On Monday,Lily felt frightened,so after school Lily asked Ms.Clay if she could write an art paper instead of doing an art project.
“I understand this project scared you,Lily,” Ms.Clay said.“Just remember, you can create any kind of art you want,” Ms.Clay smiled at her.“Art is a person’s way of expressing his or her feelings—it isn’t always painting, drawing,or cutting.I know you will think of something very creative, and I can’t wait to see it.”
When Lily arrived home, she took out a piece of paper and a pencil. She remembered Ms.Clay’s words.“Art is a person’s way of expressing his or her feelings.” Lily wrote the word “terrified” on her paper. She crumpled (揉皱) the paper and threw it to the side of her desk.
Then Lily stared at the crumpled ball.Suddenly an idea struck her.
注意:续写词数应为150左右。

When you buy fresh-cut flowers,do you think about where they came from You might think they were grown somewhere nearby. The reality, though,is that the cut flower trade is increasingly international.Today, thanks to airplanes and high-tech cooling systems, even the most delicate flowers are exported and sold thousands of kilometers away from where it was grown.
The Netherlands handles about 60 percent of the world’s cut flowers. And its auction houses(拍卖行)are very large—Aalsmeer, near Amsterdam,is auction house in the sense that Tokyo is a city.About 120 soccer fields would fill its main building.Nineteen million flowers are sold here on an average day.
The Netherlands is also a world leader in developing new flower varieties.Dutch companies and the government invest a great amount of money in flower research.Their scientists look for ways to lengthen a flower’s vase life,to strengthen flowers to prevent them from being damaged while traveling, and also to strengthen the natural fragrance of the flowers.
There are also many other places with a better climate for growing flowers, and the climate of Ecuador is almost perfect. With predictable rainy periods and 12 hours of sunlight each day,Ecuador’s roses are famous for their large heads and long, straight stems(茎).Every year,Ecuador sells about 500 million flowers to the U.S.alone.The industry has brought employment opportunities and a stronger economy to the country.“My family has TV now. There are radios,” says Yolanda Quishpe,20,who picked roses for four years.
To others, the increasingly international nature of the flower trade is very bad news.In recent years local growers in the U.S.faced huge competition from international flower companies, and many lost their businesses.Lina Hale,an independent rose grower said her father had predicted the situation in the 1980s.“I see a train coming down the track,” he warned her,“and it’s coming straight towards us.”

A.How to increase flower production.
B.How to avoid climate’s effect on flowers.
C.How to speed up the process of flowering.
D.How to keep flowers fresh during transportation.
26.What does the author want to show through Yolanda Quishpe’s words
A.Flowers from Ecuador are beautiful.
B.Ecuador could grow even more flowers.
C.The flower trade in Ecuador benefits the local.
D.Rose-picking is a very popular job in Ecuador.
27.What Lina Hale’s father said suggested that .
A.he was excited to see the train
B.he knew his business would be affected
C.he was sure customers wouldn’t want to buy the flowers
D.he thought trains were a new way to deliver flowers

While poetry matters a lot in our house,I know that not everybody is as readily moved by words as I am.That said,I think kids benefit when parents and caregivers help them experience the world through poetry.
Poetry is important for a child’s development, according to psychologist Dianne Jandrasits.Adults can create a secure attachment with kids by actively reading with them, especially between the ages of 0 and 5,and the sound of poetry can make the process fun.Poetry,Jandrasits says, can help a child learn to understand someone else’s feelings.“For a young child,” she says,“it all starts with someone understanding your feelings. And that’s where parents and caregivers come in.”
Dave Lucas,a lecturer at Case Western Reserve University, says,“Poetry is that place where language is pleasure and not just communication.” It’s pretty simple.Poetry is music. It’s about playing with language and sound. And kids love to play.Lucas talked about sharing poems with kindergartners, and how much kids love it when you tell them to just make some rhymes and be silly.“The problem, though,is that as kids get older, they lose that interest in playing with words.Kids get to school and have some negative experience with poetry.Either because it’s inaccessible or boring,or it’s too artsy (装艺术的),” Lucas says.
Gray-Kontar,like all the poets I spoke to,mentioned how important it is for caregivers to pay attention to what it is that their young person seems to like, whether it’s a sport or some experience they’re a part of,and then to select poems for them based on those interests. He suggests reaching out to a local librarian or looking up poetry readings online. The pandemic (大流行病) has been isolating for a lot of us,he says, but through poetry,we can connect with people we wouldn’t necessarily meet.
28.In what way can poetry help kids according to Jandrasits
A.It can help them become more active.
B.It can help them hold their feelings back.
C.It can help them be independent of others.
D.It can help them become more understanding.
29.What does Lucas insist on when it comes to teaching kids poetry
A.Making it fun. B.Reading it to music.
C.Explaining its rules. D.Writing about silly things.
30.What’s Lucas’s attitude towards schools’ way of teaching poetry
A.Uncertain. B.Supportive.
C.Indifferent. D.Dissatisfied.
31.What does Gray-Kontar advise caregivers to do
A.Read kids poetry that’s available online.
B.Develop kids’ interest in different things.
C.Choose poetry that’s in agreement with kids’ hobbies.
D.Keep themselves informed of new poetry books.
D
We all agree, surely—memorizing poetry is a good thing, and children ought to do it.But people do object. At least, they object to the idea that children should be forced to learn poetry. They tend to be people like Michael Rosen.Rosen has more practical objections to children having to learn poetry by the government’s order.Actually,Rosen is all for learning poetry,“when it feels right”,which is,he says,“one of those vague phrases much hated by people in authority and yet it is at the heart of good teaching.”
He’s onto something about the timing, but that doesn’t mean policymakers are wrong to insist on pupils learning poetry. The problem is that some influential educationists have come to see learning by heart as a waste of time when tomorrow’s adults will want skills more than information.
Let’s come to the most important objectors—children.Their objection tends to come in the least offensive form.It comes in the question:“Why are we doing this ” It’s a worthwhile inquiry.I teach at Sherborne School, where boys do learn poetry;and luckily there’s time in our lessons to answer that question.
Here’s one of the answers I give. There’ll be one time when your good friend is going to introduce you to someone with whom he wants to spend the rest of his life. There’ll be a ceremony to honour this union, and words will be very important. You’re likely to be the one who has to stand up and say,“Let me not to the marriage of true minds/Admit impediment...” And when you do that, you’re going to be speaking for everyone in the room. Now,everybody breathes sigh of relief.
Learning poetry and reciting poetry forces us to think of it in this public way. However mysterious and intimate poetry seems,we need to remember it’s something we also share, and offer each other. So take some, and pass it on.

Chito Shedden was a simple fisherman and tour guide from Siquirres,Limón Province,Costa Rica.He had a broad range of interesting facts about nature, which helped his business quite a bit.The year was 1989,and Chito was walking along the bank of the Reventazón River when he happened upon something very strange. There was a dying male crocodile. When he stepped up to investigate the skinny reptile,he realized it had been shot through the head and the left eye.
He knew, dangerous as it was,he couldn’t leave the poor animal there, alone and helpless.Chito acted quickly, calling for the help of several brave friends to load the heavy reptile into his boat.He knew if he could heal it,he would then release it back into the wild.He named the huge reptile “Pocho”,which means strength, and began to care for him in his own backyard.
The kind and helpful fisherman started to heal Pocho with medicine, food, and, more importantly, lots of care and attention.Chito fed the crocodile a steady diet of chicken and fish.He bought medicine to prevent infection and even slept by his side at night.
Affection was one of the most important factors.Chito gave him kisses and hugs;he talked to him and petted him.“The crocodile needed my love to regain the will to live,” he said.In time,Pocho improved enough to return to normal health. It was time for him to return to his own river in the wild.Chito and his friends loaded the crocodile back into his boat and released him in a nearby river. The two parted ways and Chito returned home alone.
注意:续写词数应为150左右。

A third of all food produced worldwide is never eaten. But how easy is it to reduce our food waste Two students have found out.
“That’s not a very pleasant smell,” says student Helen Chigwende, standing with the entire contents of her household food waste bin laid out before her.Helen and one of her house-mates,Will Smith, want to learn how to live a more sustainable(可持续的) lifestyle,so they need to understand their habits. That means searching their leftovers or food that has been sent straight to the bin without being touched. They soon find out how much of their food waste could have been avoided.“We’ve got a piece of sandwich meat that doesn’t even seem to be eaten,” Will says, looking at what still-eatable food he could save.It is formed into a pile of “avoidable” waste, which soon becomes the “unavoidable” things.
“One of the reasons why we end up with a lot of food waste is that food isn’t stored properly,” explained Dr Woolley.Sometimes it is placed in an area of the fridge or cupboard where it is not easily noticeable,so it gets left and not eaten in time. There are also two other tips in reducing food waste.“The first is planning,” he says.“Write a shopping list to make sure you’re not repeating things you’ve already got.The second is preparation.Cook the right amount for the people that are going to eat.”
Back at the student house,Helen and Will are cooking vegetarian food to ensure a sustainable lifestyle. The long term test of whether they can keep up with their dietary prices and reduce food waste is yet to come. But both are devoted to making a positive change now.Despite being a “picky cater”,Helen says a week of sticking to health has not been too difficult.“It’s just about finding things you’ll enjoy eating.”

3D printing is becoming more and more popular. We are now able to print things such as clothing, musical instruments and so on. 36 Some scientists are trying to revolutionize the dining experience by doing this. They hope that having a 3D printer in the kitchen will become as commonplace as the microwave or blender.Scientists say that they are easy to use: 37 You can also modify the instructions to make the food exactly how you want it.This means that it would be very quick and easy to create tasty and nutritious meals.
38 There would be less need for traditional growing, transporting and packaging processes as food production would be a lot more efficient.
Printing food could also help people who suffer from dysphasia(言语困难).They could program the printer to print softer versions of their favourite foods so that they would not have trouble swallowing them.
However, some people think that a future of 3D-printed food would be a disaster. 39 Imagine a world where there was no need for farming or growing crops and the same tastes and textures could be printed from a raw “food ink”.Likewise, traditional cafes and restaurants might lose business. 40 Is it really possible to get the nutrients we need from food-based inks and gels
What’s more, cooking and eating together with family and friends will disappear. It is hard to imagine a world where the pastime of cooking is dead and meals can be created at the touch of a button.

At eleven years old,my main concern was money.Where could I get it How much did I need to buy the new must-have thing my classmates either had or wanted I went to my mom.“Mom,I need more money,” I said, leaning against the kitchen counter while she cooked dinner.“You think you need a job ” Mom asked with a smile. The next day,she had an answer.“Your grandmother will pay you to help her deliver lunch each day to the elderly.” Yes! I pumped(挥舞) my fist into the air.
When my grandmother picked me up,I couldn’t wait to start my new job.“It’s simple. We pick up a large container full of hot meals in a nearby town and then we go on our delivery route.” After dozens of meals were arranged in the backseat,my grandmother drove us to our first stop. The first house didn’t look nice, but I shrugged and kept going.I didn’t have to live there, just deliver food there. This was how I would make money.I nearly jumped when I glanced over to see a tiny old woman in the corner looking at me.She sat hunched(缩成一团) over in a rocking chair and had more wrinkles(褶皱) than I’d ever seen in my life.“Who is this nice young lady ” She asked Grandmother.I just stood there holding the food, unsure what to do.My grandmother guided me inside to place it on her kitchen table. The house smelled bad and old like the antique stores my mom liked to visit, but I never liked because even breathing in the dusty air made me feel dirty.I held my breath until we went out.
The next stop was much the same and the next. The houses varied in size and shape, some were nicer than others, but the same wrinkly people waited for their meals. Each person smiled at me and thanked me as I hurried to get out of there.I was sweaty and tired, and my clothes had captured the smell of the food and old houses.
注意:续写词数应为150左右。
By the end of the day,it was obvious that I wasn’t very comfortable about the job.

My eyes widened, and I turned to her.“Their only meal ”

M:Books have always been an important part of people’s lives.Libraries were important parts of both universities and town centers, and many of the first successful companies in modern times made their money by selling books.Like newspapers, publishers used to have a lot of power and influence, but nowadays, the companies that control digital information seem to have taken over.In particular,e-books have replaced traditional books for most modern readers, especially in big cities, for whom everything has to be easy to carry and convenient to use.Tech companies sell “e-readers” that can contain thousands of books, and their online stores list millions of titles, far more than any bookstore could ever hold.As more and more people buy computers, smartphones, and tablets, the market for e-books continues to grow. Many traditional book publishers and bookstores have gone out of business. For example,Border’s Group used to be one of the largest bookstores in the United States, with more than 600 locations and billions of dollars in sales every year. But after e-books appeared, they started losing money and had to close all their stores.

第二节
By the end of the day,it was obvious that I wasn’t very comfortable about the job.“You don’t have to help me,” my grandmother said.“I understand the job isn’t what you want to do.” I swallowed hard, thinking of money.Did I want to be comfortable,or did I want the money “No,Grandma. It’s okay.I’ll get used to it.” Though,I was not convinced of my words.“If you’re sure, dear.” A moment of silence settled over the car before she spoke again.“For a lot of the people we deliver to this is their only meal of the day.”
My eyes widened, and I turned to her.“Their only meal ”She nodded seriously.“For some of them we’re the only person they see. Many of them are alone.”I thought about that. What if I was all alone I couldn’t imagine not having my mom,Grandmother or my friends. When we were back at the house,my grandmother handed me the money I’d earned. It didn’t seem quite as exciting anymore.I’d like to say that I did something incredible with the money I earned.I don’t even remember what I bought for the elderly the next day. What matters are those people with smiles sinking in their wrinkled faces brought unexpected joy to my life while I brought them only a simple gift.
