“Van life” has become more and more popular in recent years, with vans being turned into homes for life on the road. 1 We spoke to Alexandra Ulmke, who left her city life behind and began living out of a van in 2016.
At 26,Ulmke had her dream life, working as a government marine biologist in Seattle. But she had another dream:to travel the world.Ulmke bought a 2000 Volkswagen EuroVan—which she named “Penny”—quit her job and sold all her possessions to live on the road. 2 “The biggest challenge was feeling really lonely,” Ulmke said. After several months of traveling solo, she was joined by Talkeetna,a German shepherd who traveled with her for a year.
3 “The bucket list never ends. You’re out there and you realize how much there is to see,” she said. However, she finally moved back home to Washington in 2020 before the pandemic. After years of living with few responsibilities, she entered her 30s. 4 Now Ulmke is the owner of Wandering Roots Campers,a business that converts vans into homes for other van lifers. But she still takes Penny out on small trips on weekends.
For those wanting to try van life,Ulmke recommends two things:First, learn to live without luxuries. 5 Second, start with some weekend solo trips before you consider quitting your job, loading your van and living on the road forever.

When Tina Sorg first saw the robot rolling through her supermarket, she thought,“That thing is a little weird.” Programmed to detect spills and rubbish in the passages, the robot looked like a printer with a long neck.“It needed personality,” said Ms.Sorg,55,who manages the store’s beer and wine department.
So,during one overnight shift, she went out to a nearby arts and craft store, brought back a large pair of googly eyes(塑料眼睛) and, when no one was looking, fixed them on the top of the robot.
The eyes were a hit with managers at her grocery company Ahold Delhaize. They are now a standard feature on the company’s nearly 500 robots across the United States.
How this supermarket robot got its funny eyes touches on a serious question:Will robots with friendly faces and cute names help people feel good about devices that are taking over an increasing amount of human work
Robots are now working everywhere from factories to living rooms. But the introduction of robots to public settings like the grocery store is increasing new fears that humans are being pushed out of jobs.McKinsey, the consulting firm, says the grocers could immediately reduce “the pool of labor hours” by as much as 65% if they adopted all the automation technology currently available.
Still, most of the retail(零售的) robots have just enough human qualities to make them appear friendly but not too many to suggest they are replacing humans completely.
“There is never going to be this great disaster of job loss,” said Peter Hancock,a professor at the University of Central Florida who has studied the history of automation.Throughout history,Hancock added, workers have attacked technologies when they feel threatened, like the 19th-century Luddites, who destroyed machinery in cloth factories.“If you push too hard, too far, people transfer their anger to the technology, and they protest,” he noted.
5.What was Tina Sorg’s attitude towards the robot that “looked like a printer with a long neck”
A.Positive. B.Indifferent.
C.Favorable. D.Disapproving.
6.What happened to the googly eyes Tina Sorg put on the robot

B.They were well-received by her bosses.
C.They went unnoticed by her colleagues.
D.They were hit by some drunk customers.

A.to point out the exact amount of labor to be done by robots
B.to celebrate the prospect of robots replacing human workers
C.to emphasize the risk of job loss due to technological advances
D.to stress the power of automation technology in public settings
8.What can be inferred from Prof.Hancock’s words
A.Robots will be made more human-like.
B.Technology protects humans’ job security.
C.Robots will not replace human workers entirely.
D.Governments should get protesters under control.

2 For starters,it can be an effective way to conduct market research. In the past, companies often spent millions on studies to determine what their customers wanted. However, they often had difficulties locating people who were interested in their products or services.Nowadays social media has simplified this process as many customers will follow or like the companies they purchase products from.Furthermore, online advertising campaigns through social media allow companies to specifically target people who like similar products as the ones they are selling.
3 It allows fans and customers to leave comments about companies, their products,or their services. In turn, these companies can evaluate this feedback and respond in a way that shows they truly care.
However, companies shouldn’t jump into social media without a carefully-planned strategy,as this can cause more harm than good.A common mistake is putting new hires or outside consultants in charge of social media accounts. 4 Another mistake is using conservative, corporate language in posts and updates. On social media, people are looking for personalities they can connect with,so companies shouldn’t shy away from using humor or being colorful. Finally, social media accounts should always provide value and other share-worthy content to fans, for that is the primary reason they became followers. 5
A.Social media has swept across the globe.
B.Social media isn’t just for individuals though.
C.One company called Zippos does this extremely well.
D.The person controlling these accounts must be knowledgeable.
E.There are many ways that organizations can benefit from social media.
F.Social media also gives companies greater control over their brand image.
G.Only by following these tips, organizations can take their businesses to the next level.

It was on her 14th birthday that her first book,In the Forest of the Night, was accepted for publication. It was a huge success gaining the attention of millions of young readers. At 16,her second novel,Demon in My View, also reached the bookstores.Several books later, the teenage author still continuously works in her room, surrounded by shelves full of dark tales about vampires(吸血鬼) and witches(女巫).Amelia Atwater-Rhodes is widely seen as America’s finest teen writer and was named one of Teen People’s “20 Teens Who Will Change the World”.
Born in 1984,she began making up stories when she was about three years old.“I never stopped and said,‘I want to write’,” Amelia remembers.“I loved stories and created stories before I was old enough to know how to write them down.”
In her family, reading was basic and fun.“My parents encouraged me to read—and to read anything I wanted,so long as I was reading,” she said,“They never limited what I read.Later, when I started writing, they never criticized what I did or said I was ‘too young’.They never said it was impossible for me to achieve what I have.”
In her short but successful career,Amelia has tried different styles. But vampires were the first characters to really come alive in her work. From them she has developed a whole world, one which she always enjoys learning more about.

Back in the early 2000s,lots of people couldn’t have imagined life without alarm clocks,CD players, calendars, cameras,or lots of other devices. But along came the iPhone and other smartphones, and they took over the functions of dozens of things that we used to think were essential.
The smartphone story could even be a model for fighting climate change;not because smartphones use a small part of the energy of all the things they replace—although they do—but because they represent a different approach to design in general. And that approach is to focus on function rather than form. That requires focusing on understanding the underlying problem, and then engineering a wide range of potential solutions. This approach could revolutionize how we think about energy efficiency.
Traditionally, improvements in energy efficiency have mostly focused on individual devices, which can be quite fruitful. But focusing on individual devices is like if Apple had spent effort inventing a better alarm clock,a better CD player,a better calendar, and a better camera. Now with an iPhone,we don’t need the standalone devices at all, because it can function as all of them.
So,when it comes to using energy efficiently, rather than just installing a more efficient heater, some people have focused instead on the desired function:staying warm. They designed and coated their house so well that they could get rid of their heater altogether, letting them heat their house with 99% less energy.
In the same way, rather than just making cars more efficient, what if we focus on the desired function—getting where we want when we want—and create an efficient transportation system where we can drive less or get rid of our personal cars entirely
The most energy efficient car or heater is no car,or no heater, while still being able to get around and stay warm.In other words,it’s not thinking efficient;it’s thinking different.
5.What makes the iPhone a good example of environmental protection
A.Perfecting individual devices.
B.Combining possible functions.
C.Adopting a simplest design.
D.Reducing the energy consumption.
6.According to the passage, what is the core of improving energy efficiency
A.Using recyclable materials.
B.Revolutionizing technologies.
C.Figuring out various solutions.
D.Concentrating on the essential needs.
7.What does the author think of traditional practices in energy improvements
A.Conventional. B.Out-of-date.
C.Adequate. D.Perfect.
8.What can we learn from the passage
A.Think out of the box.
B.Differences make it unique.
C.Be economical with energy.
D.Step out of the comfort zone.

Should We Create More National Parks to Save Endangered Animals
Don’t you find it worrying that more and more species of animals are in real danger of becoming extinct 1 And I think the best way to do this is for governments to create more national parks.
2 If this environment is destroyed — for example, when farmers clear a forest for new fields,or trees are cut down for making money — many animals are unable to survive, and more species are likely to become extinct.
Besides, national parks protect animals from the danger of being hunted.A major reason why many species are endangered is that the animals are killed by hunters. 3 Some hunters even hunt animals simply for sport.
On the other hand, some people fight against the creation of national parks because they consider it wrong to interfere with nature. 4 They say though the animals may face danger, they enjoy a free life. They also point out that a few species are more likely to produce young animals in the wild than in national parks.
All in all, though, these disadvantages are far less important than the benefits (好处) of national parks. 5 As a matter of fact, they protect animals from their greatest enemies, that is,human beings.
A.They hunt animals to make money.
B.To begin with, animals are important to humans.
C.I personally believe that we must save these animals.
D.These parks allow animals to live in a safe environment.
E.Firstly, national parks protect the animals’ natural environment.
F.There is a heated discussion about whether to create more national parks.
G.They believe that wild animals are happier living in their natural environment.

We would all like to increase our cognitive(认知的) ability beyond the limits set by Mother Nature. So it’s no wonder that brain-training programs—which typically focus on training our working memory—are a multibillion-dollar industry. But can this kind of training really improve your intelligence
Cognitive training sees the brain as a kind of muscle that can be made stronger with the right kind of practice. It consists of tasks or games carried out on computers or smartphones.Despite much research, there has so far been no agreement about its effectiveness. Some think that cognitive training increases a broad range of cognitive abilities, while others less optimistic.
Yet we do know that some cognitive skills, such as working memory and intelligence, tend to go together and are predictors of real-life skills such as work performance. Thus, training one cognitive skill might lead to an improvement in many other cognitive and non-cognitive skills. That is exactly the underlying hypothesis(假设) on which working-memory training is based.
To test this hypothesis,we examined all the studies about working-memory training we could find with normally developing children:26 experiments and 1,601 total participants.Children represent an ideal test group:during childhood, skills are still at the beginning of their development. Thus, cognitive training is more likely to succeed with children than adults.
The results were very clear.Working-memory training did not show any effect on children’s fluid intelligence—a person’s ability to solve new problems and adapt to new situations. It didn’t influence their academic achievement or other cognitive abilities, either. The only reliable effect was that children got better at what they trained to do.Nonetheless, the fact that participants got better at working-memory tasks does not necessarily mean that their working-memory ability increased. They may just have learnt how to perform that particular type of task.
The results do indicate that the use of working-memory training programs as an educational tool is fruitless. However, the results mustn’t discourage us from training our cognitive and non-cognitive skills. We just have to be aware of the actual limitations of such practice in areas outside what we are actually training. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t do it—the most efficient way to develop a skill is,after all,to train that skill.
5.What is the benefit of cognitive training according to the passage
A.It brings much profit to the training companies.
B.It makes one’s brain stronger through practice.
C.It uncovers the secrets of how human brains work.
D.It earns a good reputation for the training company.
6.How did the author find out the effects of working memory training
A.By conducting several scientific experiments.
B.By comparing test groups of different ages.
C.By reviewing the available previous researches.
D.By interviewing normally developing children.
7.Which of the following shows the effects of the experiments on children
A.They tend to gain greater academic achievements.
B.They are able to adapt to new situations more quickly.
C.They can perform better in the field they are trained in.
D.They are likely to succeed in dealing with real life problems.
8.What may be the best title for the passage

As a parent, you want your kids to do their best in school. You already know plenty of sleep, healthy food and some school supplies are necessary. However, what else do children need to be successful without a professional homework helper 1
Keep it ordered.
2 Hence, have your kids keep ahead of their homework with an organized system. For example, they could use a scheduling application like Asana or Trello to manage projects with arranged dates,or they might stick to an old-fashioned pen and a paper planner.See what works best for them and go from there.
Break projects down.
Many children get stressed out when they have big assignments due. 3 Often people get frightened by the difficulty of tasks without understanding that the large task is actually just made up of smaller ones.Another solution is to use a project proposal to help keep them on track with homework and projects.
Avoid delaying tasks.
One mistake students usually make is putting off unpleasant work and deliberately looking for distraction(消遣).Teach your children that the workload isn’t going to get smaller if they wait longer. 4
5
