Are blacksmiths (铁匠) going extinct in America Not according to Craig Kaviar, a famous practitioner of the craft (手艺) who is based in Louisville, Ky. If anything, he said, “there’s been a renewal.”
The industrial revolution (革命) made a lot of traditional blacksmith work out of date. But blacksmiths like Mr. Kaviar, 69, have found success creating so-called functional art. Mr. Kaviar, for instance, is regionally known for making handrails with metal leaves and birds. He recently completed a three-part archway for the local Crab Orchard Animal Sanctuary with almost Tim Burtonesque details. Mr. Kaviar said he had taken “the criteria the owner had” and had then made the work his own, adding horses, trees, a giraffe and more.
Mr. Kaviar reached a national audience on the HGTV show “Modern Masters” before going global. But it’s in Louisville that his work is most famous. And, in his telling, the craft is only growing in the area. “When I came to Louisville, there was no one doing it,” he said. “Now there are several other people around doing it as well. It’s a fine craft.”
Mr. Kaviar also works with Guns to Gardens, a group that repurposes guns which are voluntarily given up into garden tools. His role is straightforward: “I take one part of the gun and make a hole in the center. And then on one end, I flatten it.”
Mr. Kaviar said he would continue to work so long as his body could handle it. He is typically in the shop from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. or 7 p.m. “I fear that if I give it up, I’ll sit around watching TV too much,” he said. “It helps keep me in shape.”
“I also love using the tools and the feel of the metal,” he added. “When you’re striking hot metal, the metal has a different feel, and different heat. You can really judge what you can do through it.”
4. What contributes to the decline of traditional blacksmith work
A. Its complexity. B. The industrial revolution.
C. Its high criteria. D. The recovery in other crafts.
5. What can we learn about Mr. Kaviar from paragraph 3
A. He helps renew blacksmithing. B. Many young people learned from him.
C. He went global because of the HGTV show. D. His craft is popular all over the world.
6. What does Mr. Kaviar do for Guns to Gardens
A. He repairs its guns. B. He flattens gun parts.
C He does some decoration work. D. He helps advertise its products.
7. Why does Mr. Kaviar keep working despite his age
A. He doesn’t like TV programs. B. It keeps his life peaceful.
C. It helps him acquire a good reputation. D. The metal brings him much inspiration.
C
It is a strange coincidence(巧合) that as humanity attempts to greatly reduce its carbon emissions(排放), it is also rushing to develop a technology that could, in theory, consume an unlimited amount of energy.
Doing things against facts is a dangerous game, but you can picture a world in which, having chosen to start dealing with climate change properly in the 1990s, we would be just wrapping up the gentle path to net-zero emissions in time for a rapid AI increase fuelled by green power. Instead, we find ourselves at risk of running a 21st-century technology on a 20th-century energy supply.
If you live in the US, every time you use an AI model, around 20 per cent of the electricity required will be produced by burning coal. The explosive growth of AI makes this an even more pressing concern. According to one analysis, if Google chose to shift to an entirely AI-powered search business, its electricity consumption could match that of some countries.
Such estimates may be magnified, but evidence of rising power consumption from AI is all around. Microsoft is placing bets on nuclear plants to power its data centres, while the English government has promised to boost its national computing capacity by 50 per cent by 2025, which would help it keep pace with rapid AI developments in the world.
Thankfully, we may soon reach a turning point. As is reported, this year the global power department came close to reaching peak greenhouse gas emissions, as the switch from fossil(化石) fuels to clean and renewable sources is well underway. The question now is whether we can quicken the pace of decarbonisation (脱碳) to match the coming growth in energy consumption as AI becomes increasingly rooted in our society. Silicon Valley’s intelligent machines may grab the headlines and the imagination, but the people really inventing the future are working in the energy department.
8. What can we learn from paragraph 2
A. Carbon emissions have been reduced a lot.
B. The reality is far from what we expected.
C. The rapid AI increase brings many benefits.
D. Climate change poses a threat to green electricity supply.
9. Why is electricity consumption a major concern
A. More AI models mean burning more coal.
B. Many countries turn to nuclear plants for power.
C. There is a lack of ban on tech-giants’ electricity consumption.
D. Google’s electricity consumption equals that of some countries.
10. What does the underlined word “magnified” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Overstated. B. Undervalued. C. Common. D. Reasonable.
11. What would be our primary task before we reach a turning point
A. Shifting to a fully AI-powered search business.
B. Achieving net-zero emissions as soon as possible.
C. Balancing energy-hungry AI with decarbonisation.
D. Creating an unlimited energy-consuming technology.
D
A few days ago, I took an online course about neuroplasticity (神经可塑性) and the ways we can teach our brains to build new connections that break old habits and thinking patterns. I learned we can build qualities like kindness as if they were muscles, in order to become new and better people.
I had been inspired by Little Treatments, Big Effects, a new book by Jessica Schleider, the founding director of the Lab for Scalable Mental Health at Northwestern University, Illinois. She reviews a huge volume of research showing that “single-session interventions” (SSIs) can produce important turning points in people’s mental health, reducing symptoms (症状) of depression, anxiety, substance abuse and disordered eating.
Many of Schleider’s SSIs are primarily aimed at young people who might struggle with some of the stresses of growing up. I tried out one called Project Personality, which aims to teach people about our potential for change. Over a series of case studies and exercises, I learned about our capacity to break negative thought cycles and overcome the fears that are preventing us from living a full life. As a science writer, I found much of the material was familiar. But I can imagine it would be an empowering message for someone who believes that their sadness or anxiety is an inescapable element of their make-up.
It would be ridiculous to claim SSIs are some kind of cure-all for all who try them. While some may find SSIs to be as effective as more intensive treatment, many others will need greater assistance. SSIs may still be a useful starting point while those people wait to access: other treatments, however, and they can also be used as a preventative tool for those who are sensitive to mental health issues, but haven’t developed full-blown symptoms yet.
The huge advantage of SSIs is their easy accessibility. According to a recent study, 1 in 2 people will develop a mental health condition over their lifetime. We should welcome any new approach that might relieve such symptoms.
12. What can we expect of the new approach SSIs
A. They will build up our muscles.
B. They will cure all who access them.
C. They could bring turning points for online courses.
D. They might push people towards better mental health.
13 What is the author’s attitude towards SSIs
A. Unclear. B. Disapproving. C. Favorable. D. Uncaring.
14. How does the author support the theme of the text
A. By doing a survey. B. By providing research results.
C. By analyzing causes. D. By explaining statistical data.
15. What is the main idea of the text
A. The development of SSIs treatments for mental health.
B. The effectiveness of SSIs in improving mental health.
C. The challenges faced by young people in managing stress and anxiety.
D. The role of neuroplasticity in overcoming negative thinking patterns.

When I was told that I have a cancer, I was a 43-year-old, salad-eating, three-mile-a-day running, full-time working, all around healthy woman. I didn’t feel sick. When my doctor called with the news, I told him politely that he was wrong. He assured me he was not. Then the tests began, and I, like so many before me, surrendered my body to the process.
I decided early on that I would never be identified by this disease. Instead, I transformed myself into “The Happy Patient,” always smiling and joking with the office staff. Then my chemo(化疗)started. It was a scary process.
I figured my chemo would last the normal three to six months. At the conclusion of the first month, my husband Alan and I began to plan how we’d celebrate after my last treatment. Take a trip Throw a party The possibilities were exciting! Alan suggested the fantastic idea of running the Chicago Marathon. What better way to prove I was back, strong and healthy as ever
We signed up in February. We figured I’d have just another month or two of this, with plenty of time left to train for the race in October. But the chemo appointments kept coming and my nurse told me that the chemo would conclude in 30 months. That was too long a period.
But I said to Alan, “I think we should run it anyway.” We asked my doctor for permission. I could have kissed him when he said, “Hey, if you feel like you’re up to it, knock yourself out.”
We found a park with several shady trails and immediately designated it our spot for long runs. On the days when I wasn’t feeling great, we’d just take it slow and easy. But we always finished.
I was taking back control of my body. I wasn’t sitting in a chair as a patient. I was running. My body was all mine, all to myself, and the fresh air, singing birds, and my sweet husband yelling encouragement.
It didn’t stop there. I would say to everyone that “Smile at cancer, as life goes on.”
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
Finally, the race day arrived.

C. He does some decoration work. D. He helps advertise its products.
7. Why does Mr. Kaviar keep working despite his age
A. He doesn’t like TV programs. B. It keeps his life peaceful.
C. It helps him acquire a good reputation. D. The metal brings him much inspiration.
B 5. A 6. B 7. D
根据第二段中“The industrial revolution (革命) made a lot of traditional blacksmith work out of date. (工业革命使许多传统的铁匠工作过时了)”可知,工业革命导致了传统铁匠工作的衰落。故选B项。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“And, in his telling, the craft is only growing in the area. “When I came to Louisville, there was no one doing it,” he said. “Now there are several other people around doing it as well. It’s a fine craft.” (而且,在他的讲述中,这种工艺只在该地区发展。“当我来到路易斯维尔时,没有人在做这件事,现在周围也有其他几个人在做。这是一门很好的手艺。”他说)”可知,Kaviar先生来到该地区时,从事铁匠工作的人很少,现在这门手艺有了一些发展,也有其他人在做。由此推知,他促进了铁匠工艺的复兴。故选A项。
根据第四段中Kaviar先生所说的话“I take one part of the gun and make a hole in the center. And then on one end, I flatten it. (我拿起枪的一部分,在中间打一个洞。然后在一端,我把它弄平)”可知,Kaviar先生为该组织做的工作是将枪的一部分弄平。故选B项。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段““I also love using the tools and the feel of the metal,” he added. “When you’re striking hot metal, the metal has a different feel, and different heat. You can really judge what you can do through it.” (“我也喜欢使用工具和金属的感觉。当你击打热金属时,金属会有不同的感觉和热量。你真的可以判断你能通过它做什么。”他补充道)”可知,Kaviar先生认为亲手工作可以感知金属的感觉和热量,对金属的用途做出恰当的判断。由此推知,他坚持工作的原因是金属给他带来了很多灵感。故选D项。
D Creating an unlimited energy-consuming technology.
B 9. A 10. A 11. C
根据第二段“Doing things against facts is a dangerous game, but you can picture a world in which, having chosen to start dealing with climate change properly in the 1990s, we would be just wrapping up the gentle path to net-zero emissions in time for a rapid AI increase fuelled by green power.
根据第三段中的“If you live in the US, every time you use an AI model, around 20 per cent of the electricity required will be produced by burning coal. The explosive growth of AI makes this an even more pressing concern.(如果你住在美国,每次使用人工智能模型,所需电力的20%左右将通过燃烧煤炭产生。人工智能的爆炸式增长使这成为一个更加紧迫的问题。)”可知,AI产品越多,用电就越多,煤炭燃烧就越多,这是一个很紧迫的问题。故选A。
上一段中的“According to one analysis, if Google chose to shift to an entirely AI-powered search business, its electricity consumption could match that of some countries.(根据一项分析,如果谷歌选择转向完全由人工智能驱动的搜索业务,其耗电量可能与一些国家相当。)” 再结合画线词所在句中的“but evidence of rising power consumption from AI is all around(但人工智能电消耗上升的证据无处不在)”可知,此处表示这样的估计有点夸张,但是问题确实存在。 故选A。
根据最后一段中的“The question now is whether we can quicken the pace of decarbonisation (脱碳) to match the coming growth in energy consumption as AI becomes increasingly rooted in our society.(现在的问题是,随着人工智能越来越植根于我们的社会,我们能否加快脱碳步伐,以适应即将到来的能源消耗增长。)”
13. What is the author’s attitude towards SSIs
A. Unclear.
D 13. C 14. B 15. B

根据上文“Every few seconds, I spot an egg coming down at me fast from above, and I run around trying to catch them all.(每隔几秒钟,我就会发现一个鸡蛋从上面飞快地朝我飞来,我就跑来跑去,试图把它们都接住)”以及后文“Some of them—many of them—hit the ground, throwing yellow yolk all over my shoes and medical coat.(其中一些——很多——砸在地上,把黄蛋黄洒在我的鞋子和工作服上)”可知,上文提到努力接鸡蛋,后文提到砸在了地上,说明作者失败了,故B选项“但是不管我怎么努力,我都失败了”符合语境,故选B。
根据上文“Where are the eggs coming from There must be a guy up there on top of the building, but I can’t see him.(鸡蛋是从哪里来的?楼顶上一定有个人,但我看不见他)”以及后文“And then I wake up, another chance of good sleep ruined.(然后我醒来,又一个好睡眠的机会被毁了)”可知,上文提到了作者开始想鸡蛋是从哪里来的,楼顶上肯定有一个在扔鸡蛋,但是作者看不见那个楼顶上的人,C选项“我太忙了,没时间去想他”符合语境,因为忙于接鸡蛋而没时间去想这个问题。故选C。
【18题详解】
根据上文“We forget nearly all our dreams, but two decades later, it invaded my nights many times again when I was in training to become a cancer surgeon. Sometimes, surgery was the last hope of patients.(我们几乎忘记了我们所有的梦,但二十年后,当我在接受癌症外科医生的培训时,它又多次闯入我的夜晚。有时,手术是病人最后的希望)”可知,第三段讲手术是病人的救命稻草,由此可知尽管手术难度大且对病人有危险,但还是能暂时延长病人生命。故E选项“虽然困难和危险,但它确实延长了病人的生命”符合语境,故选E。
【19题详解】
根据上文“But more and more, I found myself torn. I felt happy every time we finished a successful procedure-we had caught the egg, or so we thought.(但我发现自己越来越纠结。每次我们成功地完成手术,我都感到很高兴——我们接住了鸡蛋,至少我们是这么认为的)”以及后文“All these patients would still die within a few years. The egg would unavoidably hit the ground. What were we really accomplishing (这些病人还是会在几年内死去。鸡蛋不可避免地会落到地上。我们真正完成的是什么?)”可知,上文提到完成手术感到高兴,后文则在反思其意义,可知本句与上文构成转折,指出作者苦恼的问题。故F选项“然而,我开始想知道‘成功’是如何定义的”符合语境,故选F。
【20题详解】
根据倒数第二段“When I finally recognized the fruitlessness of this, I grew so frustrated that I quit medicine. But then some events occurred and ended up totally changing my mind. I made my way back with a fresh approach, and new hope.(当我终于认识到这是徒劳的,我变得如此沮丧,我放弃了医学。但后来发生了一些事情,彻底改变了我的想法。我带着新的方法和新的希望回来了)”以及后文“It finally struck me that the only way to solve the problem was not to get better at catching the eggs but to try to stop the guy who was throwing them. We had to figure out how to get to the top of the building, find the guy, and take him out.(我终于意识到,解决这个问题的唯一办法不是提高接鸡蛋的能力,而是设法阻止扔鸡蛋的人。我们得想办法爬到楼顶,找到那家伙,把他干掉)”可知,倒数第二段主要说明了作者放弃医生职业,而又因为一些事情顿悟,以全新的视角再次从医,并在最后一段解释了原因。故G选项“我回到梦里的原因是关于落下的蛋”符合语境,承上启下。故选G。

【答案】One possible version:
Be a good tourist
May 19th is named by the State Council as National Tourism Day. As a matter of fact, some tourists pay little attention to their behavior when enjoying themselves. So I appeal to all of us to be good tourists.
One key phrase I would like to draw your attention to is “traceless travel”, which means you tour a place without posing any threat to the environment. Good tourists leave no traces-no litter, no graffiti and no irritated locals, thus promoting a better tourism culture.
It’s every tourist’s responsibility to speak and act in ways that represent our country’s image and civilization.

One possible version:
Finally, the race day arrived. As I ran through the crowd, I suddenly realized that I wasn’t running for myself. My task had become something greater. I was running for all those who couldn’t. I was running for all those in the chemo chair. I was running for everyone who ever heard the words “You have cancer.” I wore a T-shirt that read, “I Have Cancer. I’m on Chemo... SO ” Spectators on the route cheered for me. Over five-and-a-half hours later, Alan and I crossed the finish line.
The following Tuesday, I showed up for chemo with a medal around my neck. I flashed it to everyone-the receptionists, the nurses, the doctor, and every single patient sitting in those chairs. We did it! I saw admiration and encouragement in their eyes. I ran my fingers over my medal and said to my cancer, “You will never take me away!” These days, I get calls occasionally from friends or family who have just been diagnosed themselves. The first thing I say to them is, “You will get through this. If I can, anyone can.”
