My family and I met the breeder at a dog show. We drove for four hours to her house where she showed us three puppies , two males and one female. They were all Welsh Corgis and were so cute with their little legs, long bodies and heads that looked too big for their bodies. It took me a long time to figure out which one I wanted, but I finally decided when the female came up to me and licked (舔) my face. I named her Dion.
It took a while for Dion to get used to our home. Every night, she cried in a way that made me burst into tears. She cried almost every second of the day. But after a couple of weeks, she got used to us. That's when we began to train her.
My mother and I took Dion to puppy kindergarten. It was funny to see all the disobedient (不温顺的) dogs. They all barked (吠叫) very loudly, making my ears hurt. The only one who didn't bark was Dion. She was very shy and hid from people. But she was very friendly with the other dogs. The trainer says that she is doing very well for a four-month-old puppy.
If you are thinking about getting a dog, consider all the time and effort you must put in. There are a lot of responsibilities . I walk Dion four to six times a day. I feed her, spend time with her and watch her when she is out of her doghouse. Even if my favourite TV programme is on, or a good part in a movie is coming up, I still have to take care of her. It is a lot of work to keep her clean. Sometimes when I brush her I end up with hair all over me.
However, it is all worth it. I have benefited in many ways from having Dion around. For one thing, she provides constant love. She is always there to lick me, lie on me and comfort me. I always have someone to keep me company. I enjoy playing with her. Dion is always there to talk to. Even though she doesn't talk back, I think she can tell when I am happy, sad, angry, confused or troubled.
Dion is a big responsibility but she is the most comforting friend because she is always there, with me.
4. Which of the following statements is true according to this passage
A. The author choose Dion because it is a female dog.
B. The family didn't start to train Dion until she fit into them.
C. Dion barked almost every day when she was in the puppy kindergarten.
D. Dion is a dog that can tell me her joys and sorrows.
5. Why does the author walk Dion four to six times a day
A. To train her. B. To watch her.
C. To accompany her. D. To comfort her.
6. What does the author mean by saying “Dion is a big responsibility”
A. Keeping a dog is troublesome. B. Dogs are big burden.
C. Raising a dog means time and effort. D. Dogs are responsible.

Most of Earth’s freshwater sits underground. Worldwide, about 70 percent of the groundwater drawn to the surface goes for farming. But surface waters — rivers and streams — come from groundwater, too. Drawing too much groundwater over a short time can be harmful. Natural waterways can begin to empty. And that can hurt freshwater ecosystems. Scientists consider this a tipping point when small actions can begin making unusually big differences.
A new study has found that 15 to 21 percent of tapped water (自来水) areas have reached this sort of tipping point. Most of those tapped rivers and streams are in dry areas. Farmers in these areas use groundwater to water their crops. At present drawing rates, the study predicts that 42 to 79 percent of water areas around the world where groundwater is drawn up for use at the surface will reach tipping points by 2050.
A healthy groundwater aquifer (含水层) protects ecosystems against seasonal ups and downs in the use of water. That provides stability for area plants and animals. But if too much groundwater is drawn up from below, surface waters will begin to flow into the aquifer, which can harm what are living in rivers and streams.
De Graaf and the study team set up a computer model. It linked groundwater drawing and water flows within rivers. The model covered fifty years, from 1960 to 2010. Then the researchers used climate forecasts to help the model predict what might happen in future years. Throughout, they kept groundwater drawing rates sustainable. More than half of drawn water areas are likely to cross this ecological tipping point before 2050, the model finds.
“We need to be thinking about this now, not in 10 years,” De Graaf says. “Our study shows us where to target more sustainable efforts.”
8. What does the “tipping point” in paragraph 1 mean
A. End point. B. Breaking point.
C. Freezing point. D. Boiling point.
9. What is the writer’s purpose of writing the text
A. Warn us that the surface water can pollute the groundwater.
B. Warn us of watering the crop by groundwater.
C. Tell us the relation of groundwater and surface water.
D. Warn us that the overuse of groundwater can destroy the ecosystem.
10. What is the part the groundwater plays in the environment
A. Keeping the stability of natural water.
B. Protecting ecosystems from pollution.
C. Clearing surface waters to be drinkable.
D. Providing stability for the local economy.
11. How did the researchers conduct the study
A. They predicted the result based on the old data.
B. They happened to work out the result.
C. They measured all the groundwater and surface water.
D. They did questionnaire surveys on the water information.
B 9. D 10. A 11. A

Drawing too much groundwater over a short time can be harmful. Natural waterways can begin to empty. And that can hurt freshwater ecosystems. Scientists consider this a tipping point when small actions can begin making unusually big differences.
Drawing too much groundwater over a short time can be harmful. Natural waterways can begin to empty. And that can hurt freshwater ecosystems. 这可能会损害淡水生态系统;以及最后一段“We need to be thinking about this now, not in 10 years,” De Graaf says. “Our study shows us where to target more sustainable efforts.”

D
A shortage of semiconductors (半导体) has helped firms such as Nvidia, whose chips (芯片) power everything from video gaming to machine learning and data centres. But boom time for sellers means misery for buyers. Carmakers, whose products have become computers on wheels, are among the victims. Analysts say the industry might build around 5 million fewer cars this year, all for want of the chips. Apple and Microsoft have also warned that they will be affected.
The shortage is the result of a sudden rise in demand. Chipmaking has been enjoying strong growth for decades as computers have stepped into every corner of society. But there was a strong upward trend during the pandemic. Locked-down consumers shopped online, had meetings remotely, and killed time with video-streaming and videogaming.
The crisis has had three consequences, two encouraging and one less so.
The first is an investment boom. Big producers such as Intel, Samsung and TSMC are planning to spend hundreds of billions of dollars on extra capacity (产能) over the next few years. As in many markets, high prices are the best cure for high prices.
The second is that the chip industry’s customers are adapting. too. When demand fell early in the pandemic, carmakers cut their orders with chipmakers. Following Tesla, Volkswagen has announced plans to develop driver-assistance chips in-house.
Unwelcome effect has been a sudden rise of techno-nationalism. America is planning to hand out billions of dollars to attract chipmakers back from East Asia. Europe wants to double its share of global production, to 20%,by 2030. Even Britain has declared the fate of a small chip factory in Wales to be a matter of national security.
Chips have come to occupy what used to be called the “commanding heights” of an economy, in the way that car factories did in the 20th century. But as last century’s governments discovered, subsidies (补贴) lend 10 oversupply. Personally, the chip shortage is mostly a self-solving problem. Governments should resist the temptation to scc themselves as saviours (救星).
12. What is the main cause of the sudden shortage of chips according to the passage
A. Economic crisis B. The outbreak of the pandemic.
C. Governments’ control. D. Great demand in online products.
13. What is the discouraging result of the chip shortage according to the passage
A. Hot investment in chips. B. Carmakers’ adaptation to the market.
C. Arise of techno-nationalism. D. Realization of technological globalization.
14. What does the author tend to think in the last paragraph
A. Markets are the cure for the chip shortage.
B. Government subsidies will lead to waste.
C. The government should rescue the market.
D. Car factories in the 20th century were on the rise.
15. Which would be the best title for the passage
A. Chip Shortage—A Self-solving Problem
B. Techno-nationalism—A War without Smoke
C. Challenges—Promises of New Opportunities
D. High Prices—the Best Cure for High Prices
B 13. C 14. A 15. A
根据第二段“The shortage is the result of a sudden rise in demand. Chipmaking has been enjoying strong growth for decades as computers have stepped into every corner of society. But there was a strong upward trend during the pandemic. (短缺是需求突然上升的结果。几十年来,随着电脑进入社会的各个角落,芯片制造一直在强劲增长。但在疫情大流行期间出现了强劲的上升趋势。)”可知,芯片突然短缺的主要原因是疫情的爆发。故选B。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“Unwelcome effect has been a sudden rise of techno-nationalism. (技术民族主义的突然兴起带来了不受欢迎(不好)的影响。)”,可知,芯片短缺的令人沮丧的结果是技术民族主义的兴起,故选C。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Chips have come to occupy what used to be called the “commanding heights” of an economy, in the way that car factories did in the 20th century. But as last century’s governments discovered, subsidies (补贴) lend 10 oversupply. Personally, the chip shortage is mostly a self-solving problem. Governments should resist the temptation to scc themselves as saviours (救星).(芯片已经占领了过去被称为经济的“制高点”,就像20世纪的汽车工厂一样。但正如上世纪各国政府所发现的那样,补贴导致供应过剩。就我个人而言,芯片短缺基本上是一个自我解决的问题。各国政府应抵制将自己视为救星的诱惑。)”可知,当下,芯片是经济的中心,但政府不应再继续进行大量的补贴而导致供应过剩,作者认为芯片短缺是自我解决的问题,即市场才是解决芯片短缺的良方。故选A。
通读全文可知,作者提出了当下全球芯片短缺的问题,给很多行业带来了消极的影响,结合最后一段提出“Personally, the chip shortage is mostly a self-solving problem. (就我个人而言,芯片短缺基本上是一个自我解决的问题。)”可知,芯片短缺是一个自我解决的问题。所以A项“Chip Shortage—A Self-solving Problem(芯片短缺——一个自我解决的问题)”符合本文的中心主旨,适合作为本文的最佳标题,故选A。

C. To accompany her. D. To comfort her.

A. Keeping a dog is troublesome. B. Dogs are big burden.
C. Raising a dog means time and effort. D. Dogs are responsible.
7. Which words can best describe the author
A. Patient and responsible. B. Curious and creative.

A End point.
A Keeping the stability of natural water.
12 What is the main cause of the sudden shortage of chips according to the passage
A. Economic crisis B. The outbreak of the pandemic.
C. Governments’ control. D. Great demand in online products.
13. What is the discouraging result of the chip shortage according to the passage
A. Hot investment in chips. B. Carmakers’ adaptation to the market.
C. Arise of techno-nationalism. D. Realization of technological globalization.
14. What does the author tend to think in the last paragraph
A. Markets are the cure for the chip shortage.
B. Government subsidies will lead to waste.
C. The government should rescue the market.
D. Car factories in the 20th century were on the rise.
15. Which would be the best title for the passage
A. Chip Shortage—A Self-solving Problem
B. Techno-nationalism—A War without Smoke
C. Challenges—Promises of New Opportunities
D. High Prices—the Best Cure for High Prices
