On a cold winter nig ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ht in 1855, four escaped slaves ran across a dark field in Maryland. They wanted to get to the North. Slave catchers were out looking for them. English as an ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )international language is widely used in many countries increasing the importance of learning it. When one is learning English as a second language, it is important to understand the culture of its native speakers to comprehend fully. The culture of a language is in its literature that shows the reader how to speak, think and act as the natives. The importance of literature in learning second languages is also in its great contribution to the linguistic skills of any student and the motivation it gives in learning.www.21-cn-jy.com
Many foreign studen ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ts who want to know the language place emphasis on knowing the grammar and vocabulary to enable them to communicate in everyday situations. This is done at the cost of using literature as a means and tool of learning. Initially many English language schools did not integrate literature into their teaching programs, as there was little demand for it. However, scholars and teachers noticed that learning the functional language only made the learners able to read, write and speak in formal situations. The learners were unable to express themselves well in daily situations and had difficulty integrating into English speaking communities.
Today, noticeable c ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )hanges are clear in many second language schools, which now emphasize the use of reading novels as part of the learning programs. They encourage students to read on their own and the fictional stories make the learning process enjoyable. Simply knowing how to read and write in a classroom is not enough to introduce a new person to the emotions and societal situations they may meet when in a foreign country where the language is spoken. As literature is an art, it is able to invoke the emotions and sympathies of the reader enabling them to relate to life situations.
Famous British schol ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ars argue that novels do not simply describe the various realities in life but they also add to those realities. Novels describe morals, ethics norms and conceptions of how things should be, more than one can learn in class.
Any person who wishes ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )to learn English should take care to look for a school that includes all these aspects in the curriculum. Each school considered should be researched to make sure that the course offered is comprehensive in reading, writing, speaking and literature as well. If already enrolled in a program, you can consult with your instructor as to which novels are instrumental in educating something about culture and enrich one’s knowledge of the language.

Casa Aurea was ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) a colorful and unusual guesthouse in Santa Teresa. Six female volunteers shared one room, a bathroom and a fridge in the basement. The atmosphere at the guesthouse was lively and the opportunities to engage with other guests and residents were plentiful. The best feature of the guesthouse was the open air seating area, surrounded by tropical plants. Having seen the other accommodation options, I realize just how lucky I was to be placed there.
Santa Teresa ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )was a great location with amazing views over the city, lots of nice bars and restaurants and regular buses, which has replaced the local tram (有轨电车) service. The location suited me perfectly, but it is probably worth mentioning that it is a long way from the beaches and the up hill walks were a killer! The area was once home to grand villas and it is now home to the artists of Rio and has a lively and welcoming atmosphere.
Rio itself is an edgy ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) city full of noise and dirt. I was placed at a community centre on a Favela about an hours bus ride out of the centre of the city. The centre manager was very welcoming, but as she didn’t speak English and our level of Portuguese was really basic it made communicating very challenging. Thankfully I had taken the TEFL certificate along with another volunteer, so we brought a few basic resources and created lessons around everyday topics introducing games, stories, songs and anything we could think of to encourage the children to learn. You never knew who was going to turn up to a class or when they would arrive. 6-17 was the age range, so we split the class into two; there was also one or two adults that turned up from time to time.
I found the Portuguese ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) lessons really useful. They were well structured and taught in a friendly and relaxing environment. English is not widely spoken in Rio. If you want to communicate well, Portuguese is essential.
Having never volunteer ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ed internationally before, I really didn’t know what to expect. The opportunity of experiencing living in Rio was incredible. I think I underestimated how hard it would be for volunteers to live and work in a foreign country. The whole experience helped me to understand that it is worthwhile to do something for others.

A. To be a vol ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )unteer teacher there. B. To take a holiday there.
C. To visit her fri ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ends there. D. To experience the local life there.
39. The author coul ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )dn’t well communicate with the centre manager because she ______.

A Native American ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) language is in danger of disappearing. The last known native speaker of Klallam was Hazel Sampson. Sampson died at the age of 103. She was the oldest member of the Klallam American Indian tribes of the Pacific Northwest. When all native speakers of a language disappear, the descendants (后代) of those who spoke it lose a valuable part of their history and culture. Starting in the 1870s, the U.S. government tried to eliminate many Native American languages by forcing Native American children to attend schools that required them to speak and read only in English.
Government officia ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ls later realized the value of these rare languages. In 1990, Congress passed the Native American Languages Act (NALA), which stated that Native American languages can be spoken and taught in schools. An additional act in 2006 strengthened those efforts by providing federal grants (拨款) for Native American language’s education programs in schools.
But many of the l ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )anguages have already been lost. Of more than 300 Native American languages originally spoken, experts estimate that fewer than 200 remain. Some have only a handful of speakers. And 70 of those languages could go silent in the next five years.
Jamie Vala ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )dez, who teaches Klallam at Port Angeles High School in Washington State, says Sampson’s death is a huge blow to the Klallam language and culture. “Tribal elders carry so much knowledge of our culture and traditions. When they die, it’s gone.” Valadez says. Few of the 3,000 remaining members of the Klallam tribes in western Washington State and British Columbia use the language. But the Klallam is one of many tribes working to keep their language alive.
Before she died ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ), Sampson helped to create a Klallam dictionary. In 2012, it was distributed to tribal members, local libraries, and schools. Klallam is also currently being taught as a second language in three Washington State schools — an elementary school, a middle school, and a high school. Only time will tell if the language can bounce back.【来源:21·世纪·教育·网】

Health authorities in ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )Britain have advised against eating too much red meat. The British government has issued a set of red meat guidelines (指导) which warn against eating more than 500 grams a week, or 70 grams a day. Scientists say that eating more than this increases the risk of getting bowel (肠) cancer. The new limits are down on the 90 grams a day recommended in 1998. Researchers think people who eat a lot of meat like lamb, beef, ham and bacon have a higher risk of cancer. A 2005 European study found people who ate about 160 grams of red meat a day increased their bowel cancer risk by one third compared with people who ate little meat.
Experts told pe ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ople the new guidelines did not mean people had to give up red meat. Scientists are unsure as to why red meat increases the risk of cancer. They suspect that the pigment that gives meat its colour, damages the cells in the digestive system and the lining of the bowel. A World Cancer Research Fund official said: “Following simple diet and lifestyle advice can help protect against cancer. Red meat can be part of a healthy balanced diet. It is a good source of protein, vitamins and minerals. But people who eat a lot of red meat should consider cutting it down.”【出处:21教育名师】

British health authori ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ties suggest eating less red meat to avoid bowl cancer. Since red meat does lots of good to our health, experts don’t mean to advise people to give it up completely.
Red meat has long bee ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )n one of the main foods in our daily life. Humans began to eat it a long time ago. There is no doubt that red meat is beneficial to us. Since it is rich in protein, vitamins and minerals, we won’t be able to live well without it.
However, just like a f ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )amous saying goes, every coin has two sides. Red meat also does a lot of harm to our health when we take it in too much in our daily life. Eating it too much means too much fat and energy. Once we can’t burn up the extra energy, the fat will be stored in our body, leaving us fat and unhealthy.
In order to kee ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )p us in good health, we are supposed to balance our daily food, which is to balance well between red meat and vegetables.
