She plans to publish an album (音乐专辑) with three other music lovers whom she met at the 2016 Campus Singing Competition. Edward, 18, is another one of the four students to make their own album. Actually he was the one who came up with this fun idea in the first place.
“Everyone loves music. Being a good way to express our feelings and emotions, music can tell something about who we are and our experience of the world. We hope we can use our music to touch our peers (同龄人),” Edward said.
The album includes 15 songs on three themes-love, campus life and youth, with pop and electronic music styles. The inspiration for the songs came from the students’ lives. Take the song Sea of Tranquility for example—it was written by Edward during a flight back to Chengdu after he took part in the China High School Biology Olympiad in summer. “The sky is clear and the ground looks small from the plane. This scene makes me feel calm and peaceful,” Edward explained.
The songs were created one by one with the efforts of the four writers. But a challenge soon appeared. The students found that they didn’t have enough money to produce the album. So to cut down their costs, they used an iPad and headphones to record the songs in an empty classroom on the weekend.
Apart from reducing their costs, they also tried to raise money through crowdfunding on the Internet. They raised more than 7,000 dollars before the album was published in October. “Thanks to all the supporters, we’ll keep working on our own music,” Edward said.

The Chinese paddlefish (白鲟)-one of the world’s largest freshwater fish-has been announced extinct. Scientists say the paddlefish, also called the Chinese swordfish, is believed to have a lineage dating back at least 34 million years. Researchers discovered 332 different species of fish in the Yangtze River in 2017 and 2018. But they did not find a single Chinese paddlefish They guessed the fish disappeared between 2005 and 2010. The extinction of the Chinese paddlefish was “a huge loss” to nature.
Pan Wenjing is a forest and ocean expert with Greenpeace East Asia. “The ecology of the Yangtze River is almost in ruins due to human activity in past decades” Pan said. She stressed that China had taken measures to improve the Yangtze’s environment, including a 10-year ban (禁令) on fishing.
After the extinction was reported in the news, some Chinese media and Internet users took a look back at the large creatures. Many people appeared to have not heard of the Chinese paddlefish before it was announced extinct.

空格前的句子“Often our body naturally moves to this position, which is linked to when we were in the womb in the foetal(胎儿的) position.(我们的身体通常会自然地移动到这个姿势,这与我们在子宫里的胎儿姿势有关)”是说侧卧而睡与胎儿的姿势有关,而空格后的句子“It offers a number of benefits to your body, from promoting healthy spine alignment(脊椎对齐) which can help to prevent back pain to reducing heartburn and snoring.(它对你的身体有很多好处,从促进健康的脊柱,可以帮助防止背痛,到减少胃灼热和打鼾)”却是在说侧卧而睡对健康的好处,前后句子之间缺少过渡,所以空格处的句子应该起到过渡作用,过渡到讲述侧卧而睡对健康的影响上来。所以B项“Sleeping on your side is probably the best position(侧卧可能是最好的睡姿)”填入空格处,可以起到这种过渡作用。故填B项。

【19题详解】
空格前的句子“Sleeping on your stomach is the least common sleeping position. (趴着睡是最不常见的睡姿)”是说趴着睡是最不常见的睡姿,空格后的句子“And those who sleep on their stomach could put themselves at risk of a less restful night’s sleep. The stomach offers the least amount of back support and can increase pressure on the spine which may cause pain once you wake up.(那些趴着睡的人可能会让自己晚上睡得不那么安稳。胃对背部的支撑最少,而且会增加脊椎的压力,醒来后可能会引起疼痛)”又说趴着睡对健康的不良影响,所以空格处的句子也应该是说趴着睡的弊端,所以D项“There are more negatives to this position compared to positives.(这种姿势的坏处比好处要多)”填入空格处,和上下文是顺接关系,符合题意。故选D项。
【20题详解】
空格后的句子“You should consider various factors such as if you snore or suffer sleep problems, or if you often have back and neck pain.(你应该考虑各种因素,比如你是否打鼾或有睡眠问题,或者你是否经常背部和颈部疼痛)”是说,你的睡觉姿势可能受各种因素的影响,与个人的具体情况有关,空格处的句子也应该提到相关内容,所以E项“Determining the sleeping position for you is personal preference.(睡姿是个人喜好决定的)”填入空格处,和下文是顺接关系。故选E项。

One day, when I was 7 years old, my father was standing in line to buy tickets for the circus for me.
And there was only one family in front of us. I was deeply impressed by them. There were eight children, all probably under the age of twelve. You could tell they didn’t have a lot of money.
Their clothes were not expensive, but they were clean. The children were well-behaved, all of them standing in line, two-by-two behind their parents, holding hands. They were excitedly talking about the clowns, elephants, and other acts they would see that night with their brothers or sisters in a low voice.
I could sense that they had never been to the circus before. It promised to be highlight of their young lives. The father and mother were at the head of the pack, standing proud as could be. The mother was holding her husband’s hand, looking up at him as if to say, “You are my hero.”
He was smiling and responding in pride, looking back at her as if to say, “You got that right.”
The ticket lady asked the father how many tickets he wanted. He proudly responded, “Please let me buy eight children’s tickets and two adult tickets so I can take my family to the circus.”
The ticket lady gave the price. The man’s wife let go of his hand, her head dropped, and his lips began to shake. The father leaned a little closer and asked, “How much did you say ”
The ticket lady again quoted the price. The man didn’t have enough money.
How was he supposed to turn and tell his eight children that he didn’t have enough money to take them to the circus
Actually, we were not wealthy in any sense. So, I understand how the kids would feel. I felt sorry for them.

This fell out of your pocket.” The man turned around and saw the money. He knew what was going on. He held my dad’s hands and received the bill with tears in his eyes. He said gratefully, “Thank you so much. This means a lot to me and my family.” That day my father and I went back to our car and drove home without any tickets. We didn’t go to the circus that night. When I asked my father why he did so, he said, “My child, it was a heartbreaking and embarrassing situation for a father. Surely he wasn’t begging for a handout, but we should appreciate what we have obtained from life and catch every opportunity to help others. We didn’t go to the circus tonight, but we did a great thing,” he added. Hearing my father’s words, I smiled happily.
