A man recently connected with me on LinkedIn and sent me this note: “Let me know if you ever need a writer. ”I guess he’s a writer I don’t know. But I do know this phrase “Let me know if you ever need a…” shows up a lot, in my inbox and surely yours, too. I’ve come to think of it as the eight most deadly words in selling oneself because that phrase is the death of opportunity.
Let’s consider the approach. These people are being standoffish. Rather than selling themselves, they’re shifting the burden onto someone else to make the sale. If I need a writer, I should reach out to them. If I need a story, I should ask them for an interview. If I need a customer service solution, I should ask them for details. “Let me know if you ever need a…” sounds like an invitation, but it’s really a shrug.
Imagine the situation where I’d assign a story to the writer who used the nine words, “Let me know if you ever need a writer. ”Just anyone who can string words together. I would have needed to be in a panic, so desperate for someone to contribute to our magazine that I’d stopped thinking about great writers or good writers, or even serviceable writers and simply settled for: a writer. This isn’t a situation that exists. The world is full of good options! We are not living in times of shortage. If we need a job done, there are plenty of qualified people to do it. Our question is: Who’s the best
If you want to create opportunity for yourself, answer that question convincingly. The first thing to do is show someone you are the opportunity. Hiring you can help them. We also need to stop hiding behind ourselves. Get out in front! Sell yourself and your amazing abilities. Understand someone’s problem, and explain exactly why you are the solution. Avoid saying “Let me know if you ever need a…”. Instead, start with: “Let me explain how I can help you.”
4. What do we know from the author’s experience
A. We’d better start our own careers as early as possible.
B. The author prefers to hire his employees on LinkedIn.
C. The phrase “Let me know if you ever need a…” is useful.
D. Many people use the wrong opening sentence to sell themselves.
5 What does the underlined word “standoffish” mean in Paragraph 2
A. Frank and open. B. Unfriendly and proud.
C. Unsure and sensitive. D. Concerned and confident.
6. What can be inferred from Paragraph 3
A. The author is in desperate need of a writer’s help.
B. There are very few great writers available nowadays.
C. Anyone who can string words together is a good writer.
D. The author isn’t interested in the writer using the nine words.
7. What is the text mainly about
A. Ways of selling oneself. B. Tips for job interviews.
C. Preparations for landing a job. D. Requirements for common jobs.

Young soldiers, far away from home and missing their families, discover a bear cub. That’s how the story of Wojtek begins, back in 1942. He was alone in the mountains of Iran; nobody knows how he got there.
When the exhausted Polish soldiers came upon Wojtek, they were immediately struck with emotions. They had been away from their loved ones for a long time. They needed something to pick their spirits up. So, they nursed the baby bear with milk from a bottle and named him Wojtek, which means: a warrior to whom fighting brings joy.
Wojtek was officially adopted into the army. He traveled with the army to the Middle East, providing comradery and entertainment. He would wrestle with the men, chase after oranges they cast for him and follow them about like a puppy. He became their connection to humanity in a time when the light of peace seemed so far away. And, like a child, he was also playful. In the desert heat, he learned how to break into the showers and turn on the water. He could also be seen pulling trunks of empty gun shells with the men or standing at attention in formation. Wojtek was also the chief frightener of new members: He would literally bear hug them and hold them upside down for a good laugh.
Getting through the hardship of war takes something extraordinary something unexpectedly dangerous to preserve your mental state. That’s what Wojtek did for the men who had been so long in the fog and uncertainty of World War II. A playful bear became the symbol of strength and adaptability. Thankfully, wars ended but Wojtek was not forgotten. He was shipped with a group of men to a farm in Scotland, which was a fitting place to retire for a bear with so much military experience. Wojtek was a local celebrity. Stories of him kicking a soccer ball, attending local dances and parties, and enjoying jam and honey are still told today. And to everyone who knew him, Wojtek was the one that made a difficult time a little more bearable.
8. How did the Polish soldiers react after they found the bear
A. They were hit by the bear. B. They accepted him and fed him.
C. They called Wojtek names. D. They brought joy to him like warriors.
9. What did Wojtek do in the army
A. He would run after and eat up the oranges thrown by the soldiers.
B. He could pull branches with the soldiers to the army camp.
C. He would stand and listen attentively for information.
D. He would play tricks on those newly-joined soldiers.
10. What happened to Wojtek after World War II
A. He became famous and brought joy to the locals in a farm in Scotland.
B. He settled down with the Polish army in a farm in Scotland.
C He enjoyed his life in another army in a farm in Scotland.
D. He was shipped to his hometown with the help of the Polish soldiers.
11. What is the best title of the passage
A. Wojtek: The Wild Warrior in the Desert Storm
B. Wojtek: From the Frontlines to a Hairy Friend
C. A Lifelong Bear Friend with the Scottish Locals
D. Bearing Witness: The Remarkable Tale of the Polish Army

Sugar-free cookies, reduced-sugar cereal, sugar-free candy, diet soda... are these better for you Since sugar became a taboo (禁忌) in the nutrition and wellness world, sugar-free food items and drinks have acted as substitutes for once beloved sweet drinks and snacks. Claiming to be ZERO sugar means it is healthier, better for diabetics, and helps you slim down... Right
Wrong. Sugar-free isn’t better for you. In fact, sugar-free is worse.
Sugar-free means that artificial sweeteners (甜味剂) are used instead of real sugar. The problem:these sweeteners do not come from natural sources and they can cause you more harm than good.
Let’s get into what these artificial sweeteners actually are. Sugar-free sugar sounds wrong and that’s because there is no such thing as sugar-free sugar. Some of these sugar-free alternatives still contain sugar and the ones that don’t contain sugar have chemicals your body often does not know how to process.
Most artificial sweeteners are a lot sweeter than sugar,so only a tiny amount is needed. That’s why they can market sugar-free alternatives as “low-calorie” or “no-calorie”. It also means that you get no nutritional value from consuming them, which is why many sugar-free substitutes are classified as “non-nutritive”. These artificial sweeteners tend to hide under sneaky names. Actually, they are 200-600 times sweeter than sugar.
When you eat sweet stuff, your body continues to desire it and, even though your body cannot metabolize (代谢) these sugar-free alternatives, your brain does not know the difference. In turn, sugar-free alternatives connect to weight gain and type 2 diabetes (糖尿病).
Artificial sweeteners also damage your gut’s ability to break down sugar, which impacts everything you eat. In other words, your body doesn’t know how to handle artificial sweeteners because they have nothing real to process.
A good rule of thumb: stay away from artificial sweeteners and look for non-sugar, natural sweeteners like Stevia or date sugar. In the war against artificial sweeteners and real sugar, both lose. Satisfy your sweet tooth with natural sugars that come from fruits and stay away from products claiming to be sugar-free or diet!
12. What can be learned about sugar-free products
A. They don’t taste sweet. B. They are more nutritious.
C. They contain artificial sweeteners. D. They contain natural sweeteners.
13. Why are sugar-free alternatives described as “low-calorie” or “no-calorie”
A. They won’t lead to weight gain. B. They are greener and healthier.
C. They are much to everyone’s taste. D. Small quantities of artificial sweeteners are used.
14. What do we know about artificial sweeteners
A. They present a bigger health risk. B. They can be easily broken down.
C. They are as sweet as sugar. D. They improve our ability to metabolize.
15. What is the author’s final conclusion
A. Real sugar is a better choice. B. Stay away from sugary products.
C. Sugar-free products are healthier. D. Choose sugar from natural sources.

Unlike hurricanes or floods, earthquakes happen without warning and are usually followed by similar aftershocks, although the aftershocks are usually less powerful than the quake. If you find yourself in the middle of an earthquake, there’s often only a short time to decide what to do. ___16___
● Drop to the ground. The drop, cover, and hold on technique is the cousin of the famous “stop, drop and roll” for fires. ● Hold on. ___19___ Hold on to whatever surface or platform you’ve gotten under and wait for the shaking to stop. If you were unable to find a surface to hide under, continue to keep your head protected by your arms and tucked (躲藏,隐藏) down low.
● ___20___ Researchers have shown that most injuries happen when people try to change the place of hiding or when the place is crowded and everyone has a goal to get outside safe.
A. Stay inside until it’s safe to get out.
B. In that case, move to the nearest safe place.
C. Stairs are dangerous places to walk during an earthquake.
D. So it’s recommended that you drop to the floor as soon as it hits.
E. If possible, stay away from windows and anything that could fall.

根据第一段中“I’ve come to think of it as the eight most deadly words in selling oneself because that phrase is the death of opportunity.( 我认为这是推销自己时最致命的八个字,因为这句话意味着机会的死亡。)”
根据划线词后面的句子“Rather than selling themselves, they’re shifting the burden onto someone else to make the sale. If I need a writer, I should reach out to them.(他们不是在推销自己,而是把负担转移给别人来推销。如果我需要作家,我应该联系他们。)”和本段中“‘Let me know if you ever need a…’ sounds like an invitation, but it’s really a shrug.(“如果你需要……请告诉我”听起来像是邀请,但实际上是耸耸肩。)”可知,说这句话的人不是在推销自己,而是将推销重任转移到其他人身上。如果“我”需要撰稿人,“我”应该联系他们。“你若需要请联系我”听起来像邀请,实际上显示出的却是满不在乎的心态。所以“standoffish”这里应该是不友好、傲慢的意思。故选B。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“I would have needed to be in a panic, so desperate for someone to contribute to our magazine that I’d stopped thinking about great writers or good writers, or even serviceable writers and simply settled for: a writer.(我需要陷入恐慌,如此迫切地需要有人为我们的杂志投稿,以至于我不再考虑伟大的作家或优秀的作家,甚至是有用的作家,而只是满足于:一个作家。)”
故选A。
C
Getting through the hardship of war takes something extraordinary, something unexpectedly dangerous to preserve your mental state.
C. He enjoyed his life in another army in a farm in Scotland.
D. He was shipped to his hometown with the help of the Polish soldiers.
11. What is the best title of the passage

D. Bearing Witness: The Remarkable Tale of the Polish Army
B 9. D 10. A 11. B

根据第二段中“So, they nursed the baby bear with milk from a bottle and named him Wojtek, which means: a warrior to whom fighting brings joy. (于是,他们用奶瓶里的奶喂养了这只小熊,并给它起名叫Wojtek,意思是‘一个以战斗为乐的战士’)”可知,波兰士兵发现小熊后,接受了它并开始喂养它。故选B。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Wojtek was also the chief frightener of new members: He would literally bear hug them and hold them upside down for a good laugh.(Wojtek也是新成员最害怕的人:他真的会拥抱他们,并把他们倒立起来,让他们开怀大笑。)”
根据最后一段中“Wojtek was a local celebrity. Stories of him kicking a soccer ball, attending local dances and parties, and enjoying jam and honey are still told today. And to everyone who knew him, Wojtek was the one that made a difficult time a little more bearable. (Wojtek是当地的名人。他踢足球、参加当地舞会和派对、享用果酱和蜂蜜的故事至今仍在流传。对于所有认识他的人来说,Wojtek让那个艰难的时刻变得更容易忍受)”可知,二战结束后,Wojtek在当地非常有名,给苏格兰一个当地农场的人们带来了欢乐。故选A。
通读全文,尤其是第一段中“Young soldiers, far away from home and missing their families, discover a bear cub. That’s how the story of Wojtek begins, back in 1942. (远离家乡、想念家人的年轻士兵发现了一只小熊。1942 年,Wojtek的故事就这样开始了。)”和最后一段中“ He was shipped with a group of men to a farm in Scotland, which was a fitting place to retire for a bear with so much military experience. Wojtek was a local celebrity. Stories of him kicking a soccer ball, attending local dances and parties, and enjoying jam and honey are still told today. And to everyone who knew him, Wojtek was the one that made a difficult time a little more bearable.(他和一群人一起被运到苏格兰的一个农场,对于一只有这么多军事经验的熊来说,那里是一个适合退休的地方。
D
C 13. D 14. A 15. D
根据第三段中“Sugar-free means that artificial sweeteners (甜味剂) are used instead of real sugar.(无糖是指使用人工甜味剂代替真正的糖)”可知,所谓的“无糖产品”,其实是用人工甜味剂来代替真正的糖。
根据第五段中“Most artificial sweeteners are a lot sweeter than sugar,so only a tiny amount is needed. That’s why they can market sugar-free alternatives as‘low-calorie’or‘no-calorie’.(大多数人造甜味剂比糖甜得多,所以只需要少量。这就是为什么他们可以以‘低卡路里’或‘无卡路里’来推销无糖替代品)”可知,由于人工甜味剂甜度非常高,所以其用量非常小,因此商家将其“无糖产品”标榜为“低卡路里”或“零卡路里”。故选D。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第三段中“In turn, sugar-free alternatives connect to weight gain and type 2 diabetes (糖尿病).(反过来,无糖替代品会导致体重增加和2型糖尿病)”以及倒数第二段中“Artificial sweeteners also damage your gut’s ability to break down sugar, which impacts everything you eat.(人工甜味剂还会损害肠道分解糖的能力,从而影响你吃的所有东西)”可知,这些所谓的“无糖产品”中含有的人工甜味剂会导致肥胖和糖尿病,还会损害肠道分解糖的能力,因此是更大的健康隐患。故选A。
根据最后一段中“A good rule of thumb: stay away from artificial sweeteners and look for non-sugar, natural sweeteners like Stevia or date sugar.(一个很好的经验法则:远离人造甜味剂,寻找无糖的天然甜味剂,如甜菊糖或枣糖)”可知,作者认为,无论糖还是人工甜味剂都不是好的选择,后者危害更大;喜欢甜食者最好的选择是摄取自然的糖分——比如来自水果的糖。故选D。
