一、阅读理解
①You may think you cannot live through summer without air conditioners(空调). But in ancient China, hand fans were almost the only help for people to drive the heat away.
②Chinese people started to use hand fans over 2,000 years ago. The fans came in different shapes, such as round and square. They were also made from all kinds of materials(材料). Palm leaf fans were cheap and easy to make. Feather(羽毛) fans showed the owner’s high status(地位). Sandal wood(檀香) fans could send out a sweet smell.
③Later, hand fans became even more popular because they were seen as artworks. At that time, tuanshan (round fans) and zheshan (folded fans) were the most common.
④In the shape of a full moon, tuanshan was usually made of silk. They had beautiful embroidery(刺绣) of birds and flowers on them. Women, especially those in the palace, liked to use them. Poets in ancient China often compared a woman’s abandoned(被抛弃的) fate to tuanshan. Nalan Xingde wrote during the Qing Dynasty, “If only life were as beautiful as when we first met, why should the autumn wind bother to pity deserted painted fans ”
⑤However, men, especially the literati(文人), used zheshan, or folded fans. The literati liked them because zheshan were usually made of paper and they could paint and write poems on them. It was a way for them to show off their talents in literature, painting and calligraphy(书法). Almost anything can be painted on zheshan, but the most popular ones are usually landscapes(风景).
⑥Today, Chinese people still use these fans. They have already become a symbol of Chinese culture and also a part of our everyday life. So the next time you use a fan, you may think of the stories behind it.

Professional writing isn’t easy. As a blogger, journalist or reporter, you have to meet several challenges. You have to keep up with the latest developments and at the same time write timely, interesting and unique content. The same goes for scientists, researchers and analysts and other professionals. With floods of information being published on the web every day, things aren’t getting easier.
Fortunately, Artificial Intelligence has a few ways to help with professional writing, among which is smart proofreading.
Software sellers have always tried to help writers by adding proofreading features to their tools. But those efforts can slightly anger someone with more-than-average writing skills. However, that is changing as AI is getting better at understanding the context and purpose of the written text. One example is Microsoft Word’s New Editor Feature, a tool that uses AI to provide more than simple proofreading. Editor can understand slight differences in your article much better than other tools do. It flags not only grammatical errors and style mistakes, but also the use of unnecessarily complex words and overused terms. For instance, it knows when you’re using the word “really” to emphasize a point or to raise a question.
It also gives reasons for its decisions and provides smart suggestions when it considers something as incorrect. For example, if it marks a sentence as passive, it will provide a reworded version in active voice.
Editor has been well received by professional writers, though it’s still far from perfect. However, AI-powered writing assistance is fast becoming a competitive market. Grammarly, a grammar checker, uses AI to help with all writing tasks on the web. Atomic Reach is another player, which uses machine learning to provide feedback on the readability of written content.
9.Why is smart proofreading developed
A.To help find target information.
B.To help improve users’ writing.
C.To inform writers of the latest news.
D.To overcome the challenges AI meets.
10.What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 3 refer to
A.Dissatisfaction caused by proofreading. B.The writers’ efforts in collecting information.
C.One’s writing level. D.The sellers’ hard work.
11.What is the characteristic of Microsoft Word’s New Editor Feature
A.It is a perfect proofreading tool.
B.It removes unnecessary expressions.
C.It offers information and asks questions.
D.It marks mistakes and gives suggestions.
12.How does the writer develop the last paragraph
A.By doing researches. B.By making comparison.
C.By listing examples. D.By explaining cause and effect.

“No,” says the Lion. “The Wizard is a big ball of fire.”
“You are all wrong,” says the little man quietly. “__________ I’m from Kansas too. I like travelling in hot-air balloons. That’s why I’m here. The people here think I’m a wizard because I come from the sky,” says the little man. “I live inside this room and never go out. I can’t let anyone see me. Close friends, think alike
“What! You, too I believed I was the only one.” Have you ever said something like this to someone 17
It seems that similarity often helps to form friendship. The Greek thinker Aristotle once said, “People regard friendship as a matter of similarity; they say that we love those who are like ourselves.” 18 Scientists from University of California said friends have similar behaviors, Scientific American reported.
The scientists invited 42 university students to take part in a test. Each student watched the same set of videos, which included a comedy, a discussion and a soccer match. 19 According to their scans, friends who watched the same video reacted in similar ways. Similar parts of their brains lit up while watching the videos, especially parts that are connected with motivation(动机), learning and memory. 20
“Seeing one’s friends have similar behaviors will reinforce(强化)one’s own values, opinions, and interest” lead scientist Carolyn Parkinson told Business Insider. 21
Scientists from the University of Leipzig, Germany, found that friendship is also based on how physically close you are to someone. The scientists did a test with first-year college students the first time they met in class. In this test, students who sat in neighboring seats were more likely to become friends.
A.Now, there is some science behind this idea.
B.If so, you may have ended up becoming friends with this person.
C.At the same time, scientists scanned their brains and recorded their brain activity.
D.But brain similarity is not the only thing that can result in friendship.
E.However, people who weren’t friends had different reactions to the same videos.

Technology Keeps Grandparents and Grandchildren Connected
When it comes to keeping in touch with grandchildren, grandparents need to learn new technologies. They are taking advantage of choices like video chatting, text messaging and social media (社交网络媒介) to keep in touch with their grandchildren in more ways than ever before, according to a survey.
Mary Taylor is a typical case. She depends on video chatting to stay in touch with her grandchildren, all of whom are under the age of seven. They live in different countries. Mary says video chatting is the next best thing to being with her grandchildren even though it requires planning to schedule calls and taking the time differences into account (考虑到). “It’s not always perfect,” she says, “but it’s certainly better than talking on the phone, especially with kids at those ages.”
According to the survey, more than 20% of grandparents use video chatting to communicate, which is a little less than the number of those who often use text messaging but more than those who prefer to use social media.
But with a number of choices out there, keeping up with new technologies can be a challenge for them. 74-year-old Mary Carr-McNally says she calls her grandchildren back when they text her. “I’m not very good at texting, so I call them back, and then we chat,” she says.
In all, more than 30% of them say that learning new technologies is difficult. That’s why phone calls remain the most popular form of communication for grandparents, nearly half of whom say they talk with their grandchildren by phone.
Still, more than 40% of grandparents say they’re good at learning new technologies. Take Alice Smith for example. She owns a laptop, a tablet and a smartphone, and uses them to keep in touch with her five grandchildren aged 4 to 16. She says she likes to text the older three and depends on video chatting with the younger ones.
“Texting is quick and simple. But we can do a lot of things on video chatting,” she says. “If the kids want to see something, I walk around and show them. Video chatting also allows me to see my loved one’s facial expressions as we speak and does not require typing (打字) or reading small print. It’s the next best thing to meeting someone face-to-face.”
56.How does Mary Taylor stay in touch with her grandchildren
57.Why do phone calls remain the most popular form of communication for grandparents
