"Everything happens for the best," my mother said whenever I faced disappointment. "If you can carry on, one day something good will happen. And you'll realize that it wouldn't have happened if not for that previous disappointment."
Mother was right, as I discovered after graduating from college in 1932. I had decided to try for a job in radio, then work my way up to sports announcer. I hitchhiked(搭便车)to Chicago and knocked on the door of every station-and got turned down every time. In one studio, a kind lady told me that in most cases big stations couldn't risk hiring inexperienced person. "Go out in the remote areas and find a small station that'll give you a chance," she said. I went back home to Dixon, Illinois.
While there was no radio-announcing jobs in Dixon, my father said Montgomery Ward had opened a store and wanted a local athlete to manage its sports department. Since Dixon was where I had played high school football, I applied. The job sounded just right for me.
But I wasn't hired. My disappointment must have shown. "Everything happens for the best," Mom reminded me. Dad offered me the car to hunt for jobs. I tried WOC Radio in Davenport, Iowa. The program director, a wonderful Scotsman named Peter MacArthur, told me they had already hired an announcer.
As I left his office, my frustration boiled over(沸溢,发怒). I asked aloud, "How can a fellow get to be a sport announcer if he can't get a job in a radio station " I was waiting for the elevator when I heard MacArthur calling, "What was that you said about sports Do you know anything about football " Then he stood me before a microphone and asked me to broadcast an imaginary game. The preceding autumn, my team had won a game in the last 20 seconds with a 65-yard run. I did a 15-minute boost to that play, and Peter told me I would be broadcasting Saturday’s game!
On my way home, as I have many times since, I thought of my mother's words: "If you carry on, one day something good will happen. Something wouldn't have happened if not for that previous disappointment".

D. there were too many people competing with him
5. We learn from the passage that ____
A. the frustration of the author prevented him from performing well at WOC Radio
B. both of the author’s parents showed support when he was trying to search for a job
C. Peter MacArthur recognize the author’s talent in broadcasting after reading his resume.
D. the author lost all his hope and courage when he was turned down by Montgomery Ward
6. What was most likely the author’s attitude towards Peter MacArthur?
A. He was worried that Peter wouldn’t believe in his ability
B. He was afraid that his loud inner clam would annoy Peter
C. He was angry that Peter didn’t offer him a satisfying potential
D. He was grateful that Peter could notice his broadcasting potential
7. What lesson can you learn from the author’s experience in the passage
A. Well begun is half done B. Prevention is better than cure

C
Usnin Bolt burned about 10kcal of energy to win his gold during the 200 metre spring final at the Olympic Games, which could roughly power an old 60W light bulb for 11 minutes. If you could make use of all the power generated by all the athletes during the Games, you would still be nowhere close to reaching the 29.5 billion Watts consumed overall by the athletes, spectators and organizers over the event. We take sport for granted, but do we ever consider its cost to the planet
From the water required to maintain the golf course during The Masters tournament to the hundreds of flights it takes to bring football fans to a World Cup, major sports events are not helping much in the fight against global heating. What’s more, there is a lack of recognition within sport of its responsibilities and little discussion about possible solutions.
This is strange, given that the effect works both ways: the climate crisis is not just affected by sports, but it is already having a negative impact on many sports. When ice-climber Will Gadd set out to conquer the world’s glaciers, he didn’t realize it would become a race against climate change. “I thought glaciers are there forever.” When he arrived at the summit, Gadd was shocked: “The ice…wasn’t there. The things I planned to climb were gone.”
Global heating is noticeable in other sports. Amy Steel played professional net ball until she suffered from heatstroke after playing in 39℃ conditions and unfortunately, the damage was permanent. Not only that, but extreme weather events made more frequent as a result of global heating mean sporting event s are more often delayed or canceled. This has cost sport billions in potential earnings.
Yet sport can be a powerful motivator: it can unite whole nations behind its teams. Could sport have a role to play in driving climate awareness Will Gadd and Amy Steel are among many athletes who think so One thing is certain. Sport must put climate change at the top of its agenda and decarbonize at a Usain Bolt-like pace to make a difference.

A. Why do sports events consume energy
B. How much power do athletes generate
C. What is the energy impact of sports events

A lot of manufactured glass today made from sand and sodium carbonate(碳酸钠) can be reused or melted down and recycled into new items, but it doesn’t break down in the environment and will sit in landfills for thousands of years. A team of Chinese scientists aimed to deal with this environmental concern by developing an eco-conscious alternative.
In a study published recently in the journal Science Advances, a team at the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Process Engineering describe how they engineered biodegradable glass made from amino acids(氨基酸). That glass would have a smaller impact on the environment and can break down in a few weeks or in several months.
In a test, glass beads(玻璃珠) made out of amino acids were placed under the skin of mice, and the breakdown of the bead and the skin healing process were observed for 30days. A diagram from the study shows how the mice’s bodies broke down the beads. In that month, the glass implant degraded beneath the skin, the wound site healed, and fur grew back. “Throughout the experimental period, no mice exhibited any pain-related behavior that may have been caused by the glass implantation, and none of them experienced obvious weight loss,” the researchers wrote in their paper.
Although amino acids do degrade over time in the environment, this biodegradable glass is not as durable as traditional glass, because amino acids can break down quickly in heat. In order to overcome this hurdle, the researchers chemically modified the amino acids using the heating-cooling procedure applied in glass manufacturing. This is when materials for the glass are heated to become soft and then rapidly cooled so as to make the glass tougher.
“It’s important to point out that this biodegradable glass is currently in the lab stage, and far from large-scale commercialization,” emphasized Yan Xuehai, a professor involved in the study, in a press release.
12. What is an advantage of the new glass
A. It takes less time to break down.
B. It can be recycled at a low cost.
C. It is produced without pollution.
D. It has a wide range of applications.
13. Why did researchers implant glass beads inside mice
A. To assess whether the glass is biologically harmless.
B. To investigate why amino acids are medically useful.
C To explore how long it takes for the glass to degrade.
D. To observe if the glass can be melt down in mice’s stomach.
14. What does the underlined word “hurdle” in paragraph 4 refer to
A. The challenge of improving the heating-cooling procedure.
B. Environmental problems caused by traditional glass.
C. The difficulty of selecting materials for the glass.
D. The instability of amino acids.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Amin o Acids Make Glass Tougher
B. Amin o Acids Cast New Light on Science
C. Biodegradable Glass: Closer to Sustainability
D. Biodegradable Glass: Ready to Hit the Market

How Weather Affects Our Mood
The weather supplies many metaphors (隐喻) for our changeable minds. Moods can brighten and darken, futures can be under a cloud, and relationships can be stormy.___16___, but does it also influence our moods
Of the many aspects of weather, sunshine is the most closely tied to mood. Although the link is weaker than many people imagine, sunlight has repeatedly been found to increase positive moods and reduce tiredness.____17____. Happy people tend to be more favorable toward one another, and people are more helpful when the sun is shining. One study even found that diners in Minnesota, US, tipped more generously on sunny days.
____18____. A study showed that university admissions officers stressed the academic qualifications of applicants more on cloudy days, and their non-academic qualities more on sunny ones.
____19____. The more it departs (偏离) from an ideal of around 20C, the more discomfort we feel. One study found that rates of helping others decreased as temperatures dropped below or rose above this value.
Indeed, the effects of weather on mood depend on our behavior and on how we think. ___20___. A study by US psychology researcher Matthew Keller and his colleagues showed that beneficial effects of warm and sunny conditions on mood were only seen in people who had spent more than 30 minutes outdoors that day. Good weather even had negative effects on mood for people confined (限制) indoors, who perhaps looked enviously (嫉妒地) outside at the solar fun they were missing.
A. Similarly, grey weather may encourage serious and calm thinking
B. Aspects of weather beyond heat and sunshine have also been shown to affect mood
C. Weather provides a vivid language for describing our emotional atmosphere
D. Temperature can also affect our mind and behavior
E. But the effects of weather on mood are not entirely biological
F. Anything that changes our moods can affect our behavior
G. Basically, weather will only influence us if we are outdoors experiencing it

What my father wore embarrassed me! I wanted him to dress like a doctor or lawyer, but he always dressed like my father, getting up before dawn every day to make breakfast for my mother and me.
We lived in South Texas, where my father worked as a repairman. He often wore a pair of jeans and a shirt, keeping his pencils, glasses and wrenches (扳手) in his breast pocket. His boots were those with steel toes that made them difficult to pull off his feet, which I sometimes helped him with when he returned from repairing cars — his job that also shamed me.
I blamed the way he dressed. I felt that my classmates laughed at me because they’d seen him mowing lawns (修剪草坪) in cut-off jeans and black boots. My classmates’ families paid men to beautify their lawns, while their fathers travelled in the bay wearing lemon-yellow sweaters and expensive shoes.
He preferred clothes that allowed him the freedom to move under cars. So even when taking part in a school trip with me, he was dressed in his repairman’s suit. On the school bus to the campsite, all students on the bus happily chatted with their parents except me, who lowered the head, avoiding spotting my classmates’ mocking glance (讥笑的眼光) or hearing their jokes, which I thought was about nothing else but what my father wore.
I regretted telling my parents the school trip, and I was very angry why my mother had no spare time while my father happened to have a vacation. But my father failed to read my mind. He was very happy, whistling a tune along the way.
Though my father didn’t sense my bad mood, the school bus seemed as sad as I was. It drove more and more slowly and finally it stopped on the roadside. The driver got out to check the bus but found nothing wrong. Students and parents on the bus began to whisper about what was happening, worried that the delay might spoil the journey.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150 左右;
When others were complaining, my father stood up.

8. What is the main focus of the first paragraph
A. Why do sports events consume energy
B. How much power do athletes generate
C. What is the energy impact of sports events
D. How did Bolt contribute to the environment
9. Why does the writer use Will Gadd and Amy Steel as examples
A. They initiated eco-friendly sports practices.
B. They sustained permanent injuries in sports.
C. They fell victim to climate-related incidents.
D. They achieved record-breaking performances.
10. What effect of global heating on sports is mentioned in the text
A. Stricter facility restrictions. B. Substantial financial losses.
C. Higher athlete training standards. D. Prolonged outdoor sports seasons.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text .
A. Sports in the Climate Crisis
B. Athletes against Global Heating
C. The Impact of Climate Change on Sport
D. The Environmental Cost of Outdoor Sports
C 9. C 10. B 11. A

由文章第一段“Usnin Bolt burned about 10 kcal of energy to win his gold during the 200 metre spring final at the Olympic Games, which could roughly power an old 60W light bulb for 11 minutes. If you could make use of all the power generated by all the athletes during the Games, you would still be nowhere close to reaching the 29.5 billion Watts consumed overall by the athletes, spectators and organizers over the event. We take sport for granted, but do we ever consider its cost to the planet
由文章第三段中“When ice-climber Will Gadd set out to conquer the world’s glaciers, he didn’t realize it would become a race against climate change. “I thought glaciers are there forever.” When he arrived at the summit, Gadd was shocked:“The ice…wasn’t there. The things I planned to climb were gone.”(当攀岩者威尔·盖德开始征服世界上的冰川时,他没有意识到这将成为一场与气候变化的赛跑。“我以为冰川是永远存在的。”当他到达顶峰时,盖德震惊了:“冰……不在那里。我计划攀登的东西都不见了。”)”以及第四段中“Amy Steel played professional net ball until she suffered from heatstroke after playing in 39℃ conditions and unfortunately, the damage was permanent. (艾米·斯蒂尔在39℃的环境下打球,直到中暑才退役,不幸的是,她的伤势是永久性的)”可推知,作者使用二人作为例子,是想说明气候对运动员的影响——他们成了气候相关事件的受害者。故选C。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。由文章第四段中“Not only that, but extreme weather events made more frequent as a result of global heating mean sporting event s are more often delayed or canceled. This has cost sport billions in potential earnings. (不仅如此,由于全球变暖,极端天气事件更加频繁,这意味着体育赛事更经常被推迟或取消。这让体育界损失了数十亿美元的潜在收入)”可知,全球变暖造成体育运动重大财务损失。故选B。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段最后一句“We take sport for granted, but do we ever consider its cost to the planet (我们认为体育运动是理所当然的,但我们是否考虑过它给地球带来的代价)”以及第三段第一句“This is strange, given that the effect works both ways: the climate crisis is not just affected by sports, but it is already having a negative impact on many sports.(这很奇怪,因为这种效应是双向的:气候危机不仅受到体育运动的影响,而且它已经对许多体育运动产生了负面影响)”,尤其是文章最后一段中“Sport must put climate change at the top of its agenda and decarbonize at a Usain Bolt-like pace to make a difference. (体育必须把气候变化放在议程的首位,以尤塞恩·博尔特那样的速度去碳化,才能有所作为)”可知,本文主要说明了气候危机与体育运动的关系。由此可知,Sports in the Climate Crisis(气候危机中的体育运动)适合作本文最佳标题。故选A。
D
D It has a wide range of applications.
13. Why did researchers implant glass beads inside mice
A. To assess whether the glass is biologically harmless.
B. To investigate why amino acids are medically useful.
C. To explore how long it takes for the glass to degrade.
A 13. A 14. D 15. C
根据第一段中“A lot of manufactured glass today made from sand and sodium carbonate(碳酸钠) can be reused or melted down and recycled into new items, but it doesn’t break down in the environment and will sit in landfills for thousands of years.”(今天,许多由沙子和碳酸钠制成的人造玻璃可以重复使用或熔化,再循环制成新物品,但它不会在环境中分解,将在垃圾填埋场中放置数千年。)和第二段中“That glass would have a smaller impact on the environment and can break down in a few weeks or in several months.”(这种玻璃对环境的影响较小,可以在几周或几个月内分解。) 故选A项。
根据第三段中“Throughout the experimental period, no mice exhibited any pain-related behavior that may have been caused by the glass implantation, and none of them experienced obvious weight loss.”(在整个实验期间,没有老鼠表现出可能由玻璃植入引起的任何与疼痛相关的行为,也没有老鼠出现明显的体重减轻。) 故选A项。
根据第四段,尤其是该划线单词的前一句“Although amino acids do degrade over time in the environment, this biodegradable glass is not as durable as traditional glass, because amino acids can break down quickly in heat.”(虽然氨基酸在环境中会随着时间的推移而降解,但这种可生物降解的玻璃不如传统玻璃耐用,因为氨基酸在加热下会迅速分解。)
根据文章大意以及第二段中“In a study published recently in the journal Science Advances, a team at the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Process Engineering describe how they engineered biodegradable glass made from amino acids(氨基酸).”(在最近发表在《科学进展》杂志上的一项研究中,中国科学院过程工程研究所的一个团队描述了他们是如何设计出由氨基酸制成的可生物降解玻璃的。)

G. Basically, weather will only influence us if we are outdoors experiencing it
C 17. F 18. A 19. D 20. G

根据上文“The weather supplies many metaphors (隐喻) for our changeable minds. Moods can brighten and darken, futures can be under a cloud, and relationships can be stormy.(天气为我们多变的思想提供了许多隐喻。情绪有明有暗,未来可能阴云密布,人际关系也可能风雨飘摇)”举了一些使用描写天气的表达来描述我们情感的例子,C选项“天气为描述我们的情感氛围提供了生动的语言”可概括这一内容,且C选项的主语Weather可与后半句的it构成指代关系,提问天气是否会影响我们的心情,引出下文。故选C。
【17题详解】
根据上文“Of the many aspects of weather, sunshine is the most closely tied to mood. Although the link is weaker than many people imagine, sunlight has repeatedly been found to increase positive moods and reduce tiredness.(在天气的诸多方面中,阳光与心情的关系最为密切。尽管这种联系比许多人想象的要弱,但人们一再发现阳光能增加积极情绪,减少疲劳)”提出阳光会让人们心情更好的发现,后文“Happy people tend to be more favorable toward one another, and people are more helpful when the sun is shining. One study even found that diners in Minnesota, US, tipped more generously on sunny days.(快乐的人往往更喜欢彼此,当阳光灿烂的时候,人们更乐于助人。
根据后文“The more it departs (偏离) from an ideal of around 20C, the more discomfort we feel. One study found that rates of helping others decreased as temperatures dropped below or rose above this value.(温度离理想的20摄氏度越远,我们就越感到不舒服。一项研究发现,当气温低于或高于这个数值时,帮助他人的比率就会下降)”本段主要在讲气温对我们的影响,D选项“温度也会影响我们的思想和行为”能够概括本段大意,且D选项主语Temperature可与后句的it构成指代关系,故选D。
【20题详解】
根据后文“A study by US psychology researcher Matthew Keller and his colleagues showed that beneficial effects of warm and sunny conditions on mood were only seen in people who had spent more than 30 minutes outdoors that day. Good weather even had negative effects on mood for people confined (限制) indoors, who perhaps looked enviously (嫉妒地) outside at the solar fun they were missing.(美国心理学研究员马修·凯勒和他的同事进行的一项研究表明,温暖和阳光的环境对情绪的有益影响只出现在那些当天在户外待了30分钟以上的人身上。

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
When others were complaining, my father stood up. Dressed in his repairman’s suit, he had jumped off the school bus without hesitation before I could stop him. “Another chance to be laughed at.” I thought to myself. He examined the bus carefully, using his pencils, glasses and wrenches (扳手) in his breast pocket. It was quite a long time before he was back on the bus again, his hands smeared with oil but a broad smile on his face. He told the driver that there was something was wrong with the engine, but now it was ok.
The school bus restarted and everyone cheered. All the parents thumbed up to show their appreciation and those who once mocked me even smiled at me with admiration. I hugged my father tightly for a minute. Only then did I feel proud though he still wore those plain clothes. I finally understood one can’t be judged by what he or she wears. I no longer envy others having a father dressed smartly. I love my father, who teaches the profound truth: It is one’s character, not what one wears that really matters.
