Unit 3 English around the world
单元话题阅读理解练习
(2022秋·福建厦门·九年级厦门市槟榔中学校考期中)When you learn English, you may come across these phrases we think you will love to use!
“Touch wood” is said when you hope something will happen without any problems. This phrase comes from the old belief that touching something made of wood will bring good luck.
So, if you and a friend had to write a report together for school that had to be done by the next morning, you might say, “If we work all night, we should be able to finish in time, As long as we don’t ▲ — touch wood.”
Being “out of the woods” means not being in danger anymore, having gotten out of a difficult situation, or just not having a problem anymore. This old phrase comes from how dangerous it was to travel through a forest, or be lost in one.
So when the report is written, your friend could say, “I think we’re out of the woods. Now we just need to check our work.”
A person’s “neck of the woods” is the area of a town or city that they live in, but it can also be used to refer to a region. A “neck”, as the word is used in this expression, is a narrow piece of land.
So if you missed the school bus and couldn’t hand your report in on time, your mother might say, “Don’t worry— I’ll drive you. I’m going to the same neck of the woods as your school this morning anyway.”
1.When you “touch wood”, it will ________.
A.protect you from bad luck B.have a lot of problems

(2022秋·福建厦门·九年级统考期中)When my friends discuss their coming trips with me, they ask similar questions: “Do I need to learn the local language to order food ” or “I’m nervous about finding my way around, will people speak English ”—they care much about language. My answer is not to expect everyone to speak English. After all, you’re the one visiting their country.
Languages for me are a wonderful insight(见解)to a place we’re visiting. I try my hardest to learn at least a greeting and how to thank someone. People will answer with kindness when you try to speak their language. It’s not about perfecting the pronunciation. Just try and connect with the local people. When I lived in Italy, pizza, pasta, ciao (hello) and grazie (thanks) were most often spoken by me. However, languages have never been something that I’ve thought to be difficulties during my stay in Italy. I love this place.
Even though you try, I won’t say it will be easy. On the trip in China, my bathroom light wouldn’t turn off. I called down to the front desk and the lady thought I was asking for laundry(洗衣)service. I tried to express things differently like “housekeeping”, hoping they would send someone up and fix it up. It’s not always easy to be understood abroad, but when I look back on, it still makes me laugh heartedly.
So be patient while traveling, be open to learning other languages and cultures and be kind to people if they don’t understand you. A smile, some practice and some understanding can get you far!
6.What do friends worry most about their trip
A.The food. B.The direction. C.The language. D.The people.
7.The locals will be ____________ when you try to speak their language.
A.relaxed B.nervous C.angry D.kind
8.What’s the main idea of Paragraph 2
A.It is difficult for the writer to learn Italian.
B.We should speak with good pronunciation.
C.Knowing how to greet in other languages is enough.
D.Language is a good way to understand a foreign place.
9.The writer called the front desk to find someone to ____________.
A.repair the light B.wash the clothes C.clean the room D.watch the show
10.What can be inferred(推理)from the passage
A.The writer ate a lot of pizza during his stay in Italy.
B.The writer’s friends will visit an English-speaking country.
C.The writer has a good attitude(态度)towards most of the trips.
D.The writer once lived in a Chinese hotel with good service.

Languages have been coming and going for thousands of years, but in recent times there has been less coming and a lot more going. When the word was still populated by hunter-gatherers, small closely knit (联系) groups developed their own forms of speech which have no connection with each other. Some language experts believe that 10,000 years ago, when the world had just five to ten million people, they spoke perhaps 12,000 languages between them.
Soon afterwards, many of those people started settling (定居) down to become farmers, and their languages too became more settled and fewer in number. In recent centuries, trade, industrialisation (工业化), the development of the nation-state and the wide spread of basic education, especially globalisation and better communications in the past few years, all have caused many languages to disappear, and dominant languages such as English, Spanish and Chinese are increasingly taking over.
At present, the world has about 6,800 languages. And they are used in different parts of the world. The general rule is that mild zones have relatively few languages, often spoken by many people, while hot wet zones have lot, often spoken by small numbers, Europe has only around 200 languages; the Americas about 1,000; Africa 2,400; and Asia and the Pacific perhaps 3,200, of which Papua New Guinea alone offers over 800. The median number (中位数) of speakers is only 6,000, which means that half the world’s languages are spoken by fewer people than that.
Already well over 400 of the total of 6,800 languages are close to extinction (消亡), with only a few elderly speakers left. For example, Busuu in Cameroon (eight remaining speakers), Chiapaneco in Mexico (150), Lipan Apache in the United States (two or three) or Wadjigu in Australia (one, with a question-mark): none of these seems to have much chance of survival.
11.What can we infer (推断) about languages in hunter-gatherer times
A.They developed very fast.
B.They were large in number.
C.They had similar patterns.
D.They were closely connected.
12.Which of the following best explains “dominant” underlined in paragraph 2
A.Interesting. B.Useful. C.Powerful. D.Modern.
13.How many languages are spoken by less than 6,000 people at present
A.About 6,800. B.About 3,400. C.About 2,400. D.About 1,200.
14.The underlined word “these” in paragraph 4 refers to ________.
A.languages close to extinction B.a few elderly speakers

15.What is the main idea of the text

Have you ever wondered, what’s the fastest, most effective way to learn What’s the secret to remembering what you learn
The “learning pyramid”, developed by the National Training Laboratory, suggests that most students only remember 10% of what they read from textbooks, but keep nearly 90% of what they learn through teaching others. Research shows that when we teach what we learn, something magical happens in our minds. We suddenly notice mistakes in our thinking. We have more creative insights(洞察力). Our ideas become sharper. We remember what we learned for longer.
Many of the world’s top entrepreneurs(企业家), creatives, and scientists have used this method as a central approach to their work. They’ve done this through various methods:
In 2016, Buffett wrote a 50-year retrospective(回顾). He says,“ As you might guess, I ended up being the main beneficiary of this effort. There’s nothing like actually writing something out to clear thinking.”
Leonardo da Vinci filled tens of thousands of pages with drawings on his art, inventions, observations, and ideas. Albert Einstein took more than 80,000 pages of notes in his lifetime. Thomas Edison wrote more than five million pages of notes.
Many of the most remarkable insights in history came from pairs of friends who spent years discussing, conversing, and arguing with each other. Nobel laureates Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky spent years walking for hours a day, sharing and laughing about different opinions they noticed. Francis Crick and James Watson, the co-discoverers of the structure of DNA, batted ideas back and forth all the time, both in their shared office and during daily lunches in Cambridge.
The Feynman Learning Technique is a simple way to prove the power of teaching for better learning. It was designed by Richard Feynman, a Nobel Prize-winning physicist. You can read articles in the “How to Learn” to find out how it works.
16.From this passage, we can remember most of what we learn by ________.

They find that 67.34% of the interviewees will share new memes with their friends while the rest of the interviewees say “no”. Some people think that memes can create a relaxing atmosphere, but others think that Internet language should not be widely used in real life. Do you think memes can help social communication
Chen Shuqi Memes are created to communicate with others not only online but also in daily communication offline. Most memes have more than one meaning ,which helps people express their feelings better. Nowadays, memes have become fashionable in daily lives and have made the Chinese language more diverse and colorful.
Xia Xiaoyu Though memes are popular in daily communication, they have some disadvantages. For example, memes are changing so fast that some people will fall behind. Using memes depends on the important premise(前提) that both speakers understand each other. If one of them doesn’t understand, it will be embarrassing. So I suggest that people should use easier words instead of following the crowd blindly.
Zeng Xinyue Some memes are from movies, comics and other popular entertainment(娱乐). People can use this kind of memes to recognize friends who have the same interests as they do. What’s more, these funny memes can attract more people to share what they like. If you get tired of a boring conversation, you can add proper memes that not only make it lively but also show your sense of humor.

(2022·福建福州·福州华伦中学校考三模)“Perseverance” was chosen by the free online Cambridge Dictionary as its word of the year 2021, based on data(数据)from its searches.
“Perseverance”, which is defined by Cambridge Dictionary as “continued effort to do or achieve something, even when this is difficult or takes a long time”, has been looked up more than 243,000 times during 2021, by people across the world. “Perseverance” is a very appropriate word for English language learners around the world. (2023·福建龙岩·统考三模)
A tree has roots. People have roots too. If you get to the root of a problem, you will solve it. It’s the same thing with words. Dig deeply into a big, unfamiliar word and you will understand where it came from.
As readers, especially those reading in a second language, we need to deal with the text as if we were detectives (侦探) looking for information to unlock the unknown. Like any good detective arriving on the crime scene, the first thing to do when meeting a new and difficult word is to judge the situation, to look at everything that is known and see if it helps us to understand what it means.
As you know, prefixes (前缀) and suffixes (后缀) can be added to the beginning or end of words to change the meaning. Know them, and you will have the word building power. But root words are the key. Take time to learn a few of these, put them in your memory, and you will become a master word detective.
Let’s look at one common root word used in English. “Alter” from the Latin word means “other”. When you meet this root word, you know that the bigger word has something to do with “other”. Examine the word “alternate”. Can you find the Latin root in it
·If you and your friend like to eat out, first you pay and the other pays the next time. You are alternating paying. ·If you go to the movies on alternate Saturdays, you go on one Saturday, but not the other Saturday. ·If you have no alternative, you have no other choice.
Learn as many root words as possible in the language you are studying. Then use your “rooting for words” skills. Like any new skill, practice and hard work are always paid back.
36.What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 2 refer to
A.The situation. B.The crime scene.
C.A new and difficult word. D.Everything that is known.
37.If Jim and Lily go to the movies, which one below is “alternating paying”
A.They each pay half. B.Jim pays every time.
C.They take turns paying. D.Their parents pay for them.
38.How does the author explain his ideas about root words
A.By giving a fact. B.By taking an example.
C.By telling a story. D.By having a discussion.
39.“Sen” from the Latin word means “old”. Which word uses this Latin root
A.My brother is my senior by two years. B.He was ill so he was absent from school.
C.A criminal was sentenced to death by law. D.60 students were present at the sports meeting.
40.Which of the following shows the structure (结构) of the passage
(①=paragraph 1 ②=paragraph 2,…)
A. B. C. D.
