How to make friends at a new school
Starting with a new school can be difficult.Everything seems to be different, and you don’t even know where to go for your own classes. 1 However,if you use these skills, you can quickly turn some of those strangers into friends.
Be yourself.
2 If some people don’t accept you, they’re not the kind of friends you need.People often stay together because they have similar interests. For example, someone who does a lot of sports may make friends with those who also run or swim a lot.
 3
Remember to be nice to the people you meet at your new school. If you think that you will say something that may make them feel sad,do not say anything and just nod your head if they talk to you. Also, remember to be as helpful as possible!
Believe in yourself.
A smile goes a long way. When you walk in the halls, don’t keep your eyes on the floor.Raise your head and make eye contact(目光接触) with other people. 4 Introduce yourself.Tell them your name and where you’re from.
Remember people’s names.
You like it when people use your name, and so do other people. 5 Besides, ask them in a kind way if they have a nickname(昵称).You’d be surprised how often this might come in handy.
A.Be friendly to others.
B.Making new friends can be hard, too.
C.Join after-school activities you like.

Sports are all about change.A team gets better.A kid practises more and swims a personal best or learns a new move on the basketball court. Many years ago,two things happened that got me thinking about change—in sports and in life.
One of them is tennis champion Andre Agassi, who retired in 2006.Agassi was an excellent player who won 60 titles, including eight major championships. But his greatest achievement might have been how much he changed during his career.
When he was young,Agassi was a show-off who seemed to care only about himself. He didn’t train very hard, but he won matches because of his tremendous(极大的) talent.
Eventually, though, injuries and his bad attitude caught up with him.He fell from No.1 in the world rankings to No.141.
So Agassi changed as a player. He trained harder and became a world-class player again.More importantly,he changed as a person. He was nicer to fans and opponents(对手).He stopped thinking just about himself and started thinking about others.Through his Andre Agassi Charitable Foundation,he raised more than $60 million to help disadvantaged kids around his hometown of Las Vegas,Nevada. He even started a school,Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy, for at-risk kids.
At the start of a new year, lots of people promise themselves they will change. They might vow to get in good physical shape,do better in school or be nicer to others.
Changes such as those can be difficult. But they do happen.Just remember Andre Agassi. It wasn’t easy, but he changed, and changed for the better.
1.According to the writer, which of the following may be the greatest achievement for Agassi
A.He once ranked No.1 in the world rankings.
B.He won 60 titles.
C.He changed much during his career.
D.He won 8 major championships.
根据第二段最后一句“But his greatest achievement might have been how much he changed during his career.”和第五段中的“So Agassi changed as a player. He trained harder and became a world-class player again.More importantly,he changed as a person.”
2.What does the underlined word “vow” probably mean
A.Promise B.Agree.
C.Wish. D.Prove.
答案A
根据倒数第二段中的“At the start of a new year, lots of people promise themselves they will change.(在新的一年开始的时候,很多人许诺他们要改变)”和“They might vow to get in good physical shape,do better in school or be nicer to others.”
3.What do you know about Andre Agassi Charitable Foundation
A.It is intended to help at-risk kids.
B.It is a charity school set up by Agassi.
C.Some disadvantaged kids can get help from it.
D.Agassi runs it with his prize money.
根据第五段中的“Through his Andre Agassi Charitable Foundation,he raised more than $60 million to help disadvantaged kids around his hometown of Las Vegas,Nevada.”
4.What might be talked about in the paragraphs following this passage
A.What achievements Agassi has made after he changed for the better.
B.How we can change for the better.
C.Another thing happened in life that got the writer thinking about change.
D.Some assessments(评价) about Agassi from different people.
根据第一段最后一句“Many years ago,two things happened that got me thinking about change—in sports and in life.”

Walking is the best form of exercise. It is good for the upper respiratory(呼吸的) system and the legs.It helps us control our weight and blood sugar.Walking is also a good way to help you make more friends, bringing chances to see new things and meet new people.Personally I try to walk at least 5 kilometres daily.
As well as walking, I also cycle around Xiamen.Cycling is great for weight loss and helps to build stamina(耐力).However, cycling does not allow for the same level of social contact as a walk. It is for this reason that I would strongly suggest that you try long-distance walking if you want to be physically healthy.I originally(最初) started walking around Xiamen because I didn’t have a car,but I soon started to enjoy the walking for its own sake.
I have also made many friends during my walks. It’s not uncommon for my 5-kilometre walk to sometimes take as long as 2 or 3 hours, because I stop to chat with different shop owners along my route. These days,if I skip my walk for even one day,the people in the shops may want to know why I didn’t come.
I’ll never forget the first time some people followed me when I was walking, and asked if it was okay for them to walk with me.I really didn’t know what to say, so I just replied that I didn’t mind. I have been invited for lunch, dinner and sometimes just to sit and drink tea with total strangers. There is nothing more pleasant than walking past a schoolyard and hearing all the kids say hello to me.
1.Why did the author have to take a walk at the very beginning
A.Because he wanted to build his body.
B.Because he enjoyed walking.
C.Because he had no car.

2.The underlined word “skip” in the third paragraph is closest in meaning to “ ”.
A.move lightly B.leave out
C.jump rope D.change quickly
3.What can be learned from the passage
A.Cycling allows for no social contact.
B.Walking is better than cycling.
C.To be healthy,it’s better to cycle.
D.The author prefers walking to cycling.
B项和C项太绝对化,文章并不是讲散步与骑车哪个更好;A项与第二段中的“cycling does not allow for the same level of social contact as a walk”不相符。
4.What’s the main idea of the passage
A.Walking does us good.
B.Walking improves health.
C.Walking helps to communicate.
D.Cycling differs from walking.
答案A
故选A项。

When school started on that warm August day,I threw myself into everything I did, including playing volleyball.I decided to become beautiful,or at the very least, skinny.I stopped eating completely.Soon I began losing weight, which thrilled me,and I even grew to love the tiredness and light headedness that came with my poor diet, for those feelings meant that I was winning.
As the season progressed, things had become tense between my head volleyball coach,Coach Smith, and me.She felt that something was wrong with my health. She talked with me about my eating and was angry that I wouldn’t listen to her when she tried to make me eat.She tried to persuade me in a determined way and so we fought constantly. Then my hunger started to affect my performance.I was so tired that practice and games were becoming a struggle. One afternoon, with hurt in her eyes,Coach Smith asked me what I had eaten and I told her nothing yet,but I was going to.She looked at me,disappointment in her eyes, knowing she couldn’t make me stop, and walked away.
A couple of weeks later I attended a formal dinner for our volleyball team.I stood there as my coach managed to say something nice about me.I realised then that I had ruined my senior year by being disrespectful, and I had probably ruined hers as well.So that evening I wrote her a letter apologising and thanking her.
Then one Saturday,as I was reading in the library,I felt someone gently take my arm and say softly,“Lynn Jones, how are you doing ” I looked up and saw the familiar face.“Thanks for the letter,” she said.“It meant a lot.”
When I think of a coach,I think of someone above me,someone who gives instructions—not a friend. But Coach Smith is different, and, like any other good friend, she dealt with my problem in a determined way even when I hated her for it at that time.I didn’t deserve her kindness, but she gave it anyway.I will forever be grateful for her help, and now for her friendship.
1.How did the author feel when she had a sense of tiredness
A.Ashamed. B.Proud.
C.Funny. D.Nervous.
根据第一段最后一句“Soon I began losing weight, which thrilled me,and I even grew to love the tiredness...for those feelings meant that I was winning.”
2.The author fought with Coach Smith because .
A.she refused to go on a diet
B.she caused failure of her team
C.she changed the training course
D.she kept her idea of losing weight
根据第二段中的“She talked with me about my eating and was angry that I wouldn’t listen to her when she tried to make me eat...”
3.Why did the author write a letter to Coach Smith
A.She felt sorry for eating too little food.
B.She decided to improve her performance.
C.She was grateful for Smith’s care for her health.
D.She wanted to build a close relationship with Smith.
根据第三段中的“I realised then that I had ruined my senior year by being disrespectful...wrote her a letter apologising and thanking her.”
4.What is the best title for the passage
A.Unexpected Friendship
B.A Fight with My Coach
C.A Strict Volleyball Coach
D.My Way of Losing Weight
答案A
根据最后一段中的“But Coach Smith is different, and, like any other good friend, she dealt with my problem in a determined way even when I hated her for it at that time.” 故选A项。
