One night, there was a big storm in a valley (山谷). The village there was flooded (淹没). At about 11:00 p.m., a car arrived at the village and passed Mr. Shelley's house. The family heard a terrible sound. The bridge fell down, taking the car with it.
The eldest daughter, fifteen-year-old Kate Shelley, ran out into the storm. She saw two men in the water, but she couldn't reach them by herself. Kate asked her father to save them. Suddenly, Kate remembered that a midnight train was going to come to the bridge. “I can't let that happen,” Kate thought. “It may make more people lose their lives.”
Kate Shelley knew there was another bridge near the river. So Kate climbed with hands to swim across a catwalk (狭小通道), and then got to that bridge.
Kate ran towards the station and sounded the alarm. Then the train stopped in time. The train was out of danger. The two men were also saved.
Kate was great. With her help, a bigger accident was avoided (避免).
