How to Succeed in Science
To succeed in science, you need a lot more than luck.In my view, you have to combine intelligence with a willingness not to follow conventions when they block your forward path. Thus, these have come to be my rules for success.
 1
That might sound proud, but the fact is that you must always turn to people who are brighter than you. It’s like playing any game.Even as a child,I never wanted to play games with anyone who was as bad as I was.If you win,it gives you no pleasure. And in the game of science or life, the highest goal isn’t simply to win. It’s to win at something really difficult. 2
Take risks.
To make a huge success,a scientist has to be prepared to get into deep trouble. If you are going to make a huge jump in science, you will very likely be unqualified to succeed by definition. 3 This can be more than personally upsetting.
Never do anything that bores you.
My experience in science is that someone is always telling you to do things, and then leaves you alone.I’m not good enough to do well in something I dislike. 4
It’s very hard to succeed if you don’t want to be with other scientists, because you have to go to key meetings where you spot key facts that would have escaped you.And you have to chat with your competitors, even if you find them objectionable.
So my final rule is: 5
A.Meet challenges with great courage.
B.If you can’t stand being with your real peers, get out of science.
C.Put another way,it’s to go somewhere beyond your ability and come out on top.
D.Be sure you always have someone to save you from a deep mess.
E.Avoid foolish people.
F.In fact,I find it hard to do well in something I like.
G.Besides, you even have to be prepared to disbelieve your scientific heroes.
Do you think you have what it takes to be a successful scientist A successful scientist is generally a good observer. He makes full use of the facts he observes. He doesn’t accept ideas which are not 1 on obvious facts, and therefore 2 to accept authority as the only reason for truth. He always checks ideas 3 and makes experiments to prove them.
The rise of modern science may perhaps be considered to date as far back as the time of Roger Bacon, the wonderful philosopher of Oxford, who lived between the years 1214 and 1292.He was probably the first in the Middle Ages to 4 that we should learn science 5 observing and experimenting on the things around us,and he himself 6 many important truths.
Galileo(1564—1642),however,who lived more than 300 years later, was the greatest of several great men in Italy,France,Germany, and England, who began to show how many important 7 could be discovered by observation by degrees. Before Galileo, learned men believed that large bodies fell more 8 towards the earth than small ones, because Aristotle said so.But Galileo, going to the top of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, let two 9 stones fall and proved Aristotle was wrong. It is Galileo’s 10 of going direct to nature, and proving our 11 and theories by experiment, that has 12 all the discoveries of modern science.
What 13 those people good scientists From the example of Galileo,we know 14 that successful scientists are those whose observations have 15 better results.

A
Governors, lawyers and business leaders have to deal with scientists, and every educated person finds his views affected by science.Yet our science teaching of non-scientists,in school and college, has built up mistaken ideas, dislikes, and the common boast,“I never did understand science.” Even those students who arrive at college with plans to become scientists usually bring a mistaken picture of science:some have a collection of unorganised facts about science, and some regard the study of science as a game which includes getting the right answer.
The first of these attitudes seems to come from a kind of course which provides various kinds of information. The second, from a training course on how to pass examinations that do not ask about the student’s understanding but simply require him to put the numbers in the right formulas(公式).Neither type of courses (in school or college) seems to give students an understanding of science as we find it among scientists.Neither shows students how real scientists work and think, how the facts are gathered, how discoveries are made, and what they mean.Young people need good teaching of science, not so much a great wealth of knowledge as a healthy understanding of the nature of science. They need an understanding of knowledge leading to sympathy with science and an eagerness of the way scientists work.Given these,it is easy to encourage later reading and learning.
1.One of the reasons that can cause mistaken ideas of science is due to .

How does an ecosystem(生态系统) work What makes the populations of different species the way they are Why are there so many flies and so few wolves To find an answer, scientists have built mathematical models of food webs, noting who eats whom and how much each one eats.
With such models, scientists have found out some key principles operating in food webs. Most food webs, for instance, consist of many weak links rather than a few strong ones. When a predator(掠食动物) always eats huge numbers of a single prey(猎物),the two species are strongly linked;when a predator lives on various species, they are weakly linked.Food webs may be dominated by many weak links because that arrangement is more stable over the long term.If a predator can eat several species,it can survive the extinction(灭绝) of one of them. And if a predator can move on to another species that is easier to find when a prey species becomes rare, the switch allows the original prey to recover. The weak links may thus keep species from driving one another to extinction.
Mathematical models have also revealed that food webs may be unstable, where small changes of top predators can lead to big effects throughout entire ecosystems. In the 1960s,scientists proposed that predators at the top of a food web had a surprising amount of control over the size of populations of other species—including species they did not directly attack.
And unplanned human activities have proved the idea of top-down control by top predators to be true.In the ocean,we fished for top predators such as cod on an industrial scale, while on land,we killed off large predators such as wolves. These actions have greatly affected the ecological balance.
Scientists have built an early-warning system based on mathematical models.Ideally, the system would tell us when to adapt human activities that are pushing an ecosystem towards a breakdown or would even allow us to pull an ecosystem back from the borderline.Prevention is key, scientists say, because once ecosystems pass their tipping point(临界点),it is remarkably difficult for them to return.
5.What have scientists discovered with the help of mathematical models of food webs
A.The living habits of species in food webs.
B.The rules governing food webs of the ecosystems.
C.The approaches to studying the species in the ecosystems.
D.The differences between weak and strong links in food webs.

7.What will happen if the populations of top predators in a food web greatly decline
A.The prey species they directly attack will die out.
B.The species they indirectly attack will turn into top predators.
C.The living environment of other species will remain unchanged.
D.The populations of other species will experience unexpected changes.

The first science project I ever did was in fifth grade with my partner,Delaney. We looked online together for ideas and came up with an experiment to slide glass balls down a slope covered with different-textured materials. Our project was torn to pieces by our teacher. Our procedure wasn’t thorough. She told us we should consider waiting another year to enter the science fair.I felt so discouraged.
That night,I folded up our poster and started thinking about all of the things I could do differently the next year.I wanted to find a topic I cared about, one that interested me.As a beginner of the piano,I was curious about how the piano I practised on for five hours every week could make the sounds that it did.I learnt about something called “sympathetic resonance”,a phenomenon that allows string to vibrate(振动) together when played.I built my next project around this and ended up getting first place at the science fair the following year.
Today,I am 22 years old,a climate scientist. In the decade since I did my very first science project,I have wondered a lot about what it takes to be a good scientist. To me,what makes a truly good scientist is what makes a good person.
A good scientist has patience—patience for others, patience for herself or himself, and patience when things go wrong.A few years ago,I had the opportunity to work on a NASA asteroid-sample retrieval mission called OSIRIS-Rex.The spacecraft launched in September 2016,headed to the asteroid Bennu.Late last year, finally,it reached its destination. In four years,OSIRIS-Rex will bring a piece of the asteroid back to Earth so that scientists can learn more about it.Scientific discoveries do not take place overnight, and many are small and gradual.Missions like the one I worked on often take years to complete.Success almost never comes quickly or easily.
A good scientist is open-minded.It can be easy to ignore people you disagree with or to assume the worst about them. But we should be open to ideas that are not what we expected when we set out.We should take the time to consider other people’s opinions, even when they conflict with our own. There is so much we don’t know, but we do know some things. We live in a world where knowledge and uncertainty can and do coexist. As scientists,we should have both confidence in ourselves and humility as we move through our lives.
Of course, good scientists are driven by curiosity. But curiosity does not have to be limited to science. When we are curious about other people,we can become more considerate. When we are curious about other perspectives,we can become more understanding. After all,it costs nothing to be kind to someone—at school,at the grocery store, with your friends, with your family.A kind gesture can make someone’s day, even save someone’s life. You never know what people are going through unless you take the time to find out.Curiosity is not and never will be something to be ashamed of.Curiosity is our superpower. But it’s also what makes us human. All we have to do is ask.
1.What are the first two paragraphs mainly about
A.The daily life of a scientist.
B.The procedures of choosing a project.
C.The personal experience of a scientist.
D.The achievements a scientist ever made.
2.What does the underlined word “humility” in paragraph 5 probably mean
A.Being modest.
B.Being cautious.
C.Being sceptical.
D.Being ambitious.
答案:A
故选A项。
3.What can we learn from the passage
A.Curiosity kills the cat.
B.Practice makes perfect.
C.When one door shuts,another opens.
D.Nothing is impossible for a willing heart.
4.What is the main purpose of the passage
A.To evaluate the effect of a science project.
B.To analyse the personalities of a scientist.
C.To explain the consequence of an experiment.
D.To compare some approaches to be a scientist.
根据第四段中的“A good scientist has patience”可知,一位优秀的科学家具有耐心。根据第五段中的“A good scientist is open-minded.” 根据最后一段中的“Of course, good scientists are driven by curiosity.”
