Auld Lang Syne is a song that everyone sings, which marks the start to a brand new year.No one ever seems to know the words or what they mean, but,in America,it’s as much a part of New Year’s tradition as wine. But why
The lyrics(歌词)of the song come from a poem written by the great Scottish poet Robert Burns in 1788.Its title is believed to be an old Scottish way of saying “a long time ago”.Phrases like “in the days of auld lang syne” also appear in other Scottish fairy tales and poems, usually as a way of saying “once upon a time”.
While it still causes confusion,it is believed that the opening lines of the song are meant to be rhetorical. The lyrics of the song mean we should have a drink in honour of whatever is passing, and remember old friends.
When the Scots immigrated to America in the 19th century, they brought the song with them. But its great popularity can be largely due to the Canadian bandleader Guy Lombardo.
In 1965,he explained how he himself came to associate the song with the end of the year to Life magazine:
“Auld Lang Syne is our theme song.In our particular part of Ontario, where there’s a large Scottish population,it was traditional for bands to end every dance with Auld Lang Syne.We didn’t think it was known here.”
1.How might people feel when first hearing the song Auld Lang Syne

五、七选五阅读理解
Literature refers to beautiful writing. When we speak of a piece of writing as literature,we are praising it.
Literature has two main divisions:fiction and non-fiction.Fiction is writing that an author creates from the imagination. It may include facts about real people or events, but authors combine these facts with imaginary situations. Most fiction is narrative(叙事的)writing, such as novels and short stories. 1 The chief forms of non-fiction include the essay, history, biography, autobiography and diary.
We all read for a variety of reasons. These reasons change with our age,our interests and the literature we read. 2 We read literature mostly because we enjoy it.Many people read to find out new information. We can work out possible solutions to our problems when we read about people in books whose problems are like our own.Through literature,we sometimes understand situations we cannot understand in real life.
3 The greatest poem ever written is only a printed sheet of paper until a reader reacts to it.Writing,to become literature, requires a reader. The reader helps to create literature by responding to the writer’s thoughts, feelings and beliefs. 4
Every reader is a critic.Even when we say we have no opinion on a book,we are making a judgement. 5 Our ability to judge literature develops as our reading broadens.
A.A creative reader considers both what the writer wants to say and how it is said.
B.Creative reading always leads to the deepest enjoyment of literature.
C.Literature in the broadest sense is everything that has been written.

四、阅读理解
Robert Frost(1874-1963) is one of the most beloved poets in America. He was contemporary with many modernist poetic movements, but he wasn’t associated with any particular groups of poets. He stuck to his own literary beliefs, and as a result, he attracted a good deal of criticism from the literary world. But, it was just because he was such a person and his voice was so original that Frost became so beloved. If you are to choose one of his poems and read it aloud on a busy street, we are sure that many people will recognise the poem immediately as Frost’s.
Mending Wall, which is a poem in North of Boston, Frost’s second book of poetry, is one of his most popular poems. It is a poem about two neighbours who fix a rock wall that lies between their homes. “I” want to destroy the wall, and the “neighbour” wants to leave it standing.
We just can’t get enough of walls, can we People love boundaries. We love them when we’re little, protecting our precious toys from our troublesome brothers and sisters. As we get older, we begin to throw around the gentle term “personal space”.In college, we really learn how the idea of “My house is your house” doesn’t always result in happy roommate relationships. After we become adults with good jobs and a lot of cool things, we often put up fences, gates, walls, or doors to protect our stuff and keep the peace.
Walls help us protect ourselves, but their downside is that they often keep people from communicating with each other. Mending Wall makes us take a look at how we use our walls and boundaries, and why we use them the way we do. This poem sends a wake-up call to the universe. There are walls between our hearts.
1.What can we learn about Robert Frost
A.His writing style is special.
B.His first poem is about life.
C.He often criticised other poets.
D.He joined many poetic movements.

A.Sharing with others brings us happiness.
B.There are lots of walls in our life.
C.Walls let people know about themselves.
D.Personal space is important to everyone.

C.disadvantage D.difference

(2022·广东广州高二期末)
As a student at a medical school,Sam thinks poetry is a big part of his life, thanks to his new teacher,Rafael Campo, who believes poetry can benefit every doctor’s education and work.Rafael is a physician, professor and a highly respected poet.
“Poetry is in every encounter with my patients. If we do anything when we’re with our patients,we’re really immersed in their stories, really hearing their voices. And,certainly, that’s what a poem does,” he said.
Rafael worries that something important has been lost in medicine and medical education today:humanity, which he finds in poetry. To end that,he leads a weekly reading and writing workshop for medical students and residents. He thinks medical training focuses too much on distancing the doctor from his or her patients, and poems can help close that gap.
Third-year resident Andrea Schwartz was one of the workshop regulars. She said,“I think there’s no other profession other than medicine that produces as many writers as it does. And I think that is because there’s just so much power in doctors and patients interacting when patients are at their saddest moments.” Not everyone believes that’s what doctors should do,though.
Rafael said,“I was afraid of how people might judge me,actually. In the medical profession,as many people know,we must always put the emergency first. But,you know, that kind of treatment,if it’s happening in the hospital, very regrettably, sadly, results in a bad outcome. The family is sitting by the bedside. The patient hasn’t survived the cancer.Don’t we still have a role as healers there ”
In a poem titled “Health”,Rafael writes of the wish to live forever in a world made painless by our incurable joy.He says he will continue teaching students, helping patients and writing poems, his own brand of medicine.

参考范文
Dear Bob,
I was glad to hear from you.In your letter, you asked me why Chinese parents liked educating their children using ancient poems.
As you know, the ancient poem is a form of rhythmic language, and ancient poems often describe complex things in simple ways. These two characteristics especially appeal to children, who can learn and recite poems without too much difficulty.Once a poem is memorised,it’s hard to forget. What’s more, poems are both emotional and imaginative, which again makes them appeal to children. For all these reasons, parents love to use poems to teach their children.
Best wishes.
Yours,
Li Hua
