When the dog named Judy spotted the first sheep in her life, she did what comes naturally. The four-year-old dog set off racing after the sheep across several fields and, being a city animal, lost both her sheep and her sense of direction. Then she ran along the edge of cliff( 悬崖) and fell 100 feet, bouncing off a rock into the sea.
Her owner Mike Holden panicked and celled the coastguard of Cornwall, who turned up in seconds . Six volunteers slid down the cliff with the help of a rope but gave up all hope of finding her alive after a 90-minute search.
Three days later, a hurricane hit the coast near Cornwall. Mr. Holden returned home from his holiday upset and convinced his pet was dead. He comforted himself with the thought she had died in the most beautiful part of the country.
For the next two weeks, the Holdens were heartbroken . Then, one day, the phone rang and Steve Tregear, the coastguard of Cornwall, asked Holder if he would like his dog bark.
A birdwatcher, armed with a telescope, found the pet sitting desperately on a rock. While he sounded the alarm, a student from Leeds climbed down the cliff to collect Judy.
The dog had initially been knocked unconscious(失去知觉的)but had survived by drinking water from a fresh scream at the base of the cliff. She may have fed on the body of a sheep which had also fallen over the edge. “The dog was very thin and hungry,” Steve Tregear said , “It was a very lucky dog. She survived because of a plentiful supply of fresh water,” he added.
It was ,as Mr. Holden admitted, “a minor miracle(奇迹)”.

I travel a lot, and I find out different “styles”(风格)of directions every time I ask “ How can I get to the post office ”
Foreign tourists are often confused(困惑的)in Japan because most streets there don’t have names. In Japan, people use landmarks(地标)in their directions instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to travelers, “ Go straight down to the corner. Turn left at the big hotel and go past a fruit market. The post office is across from the bus stop.”
In the countryside of the American Midwest, there are not usually many landmarks. There are no mountains, so the land is very flat. In many places there are no towns or buildings within miles. Instead of landmarks, people will tell you directions and distances. In Kansas or Iowa, for example, people will say, “ Go north two miles. Turn east, and then go another mile.
People in Los Angeles, California, have no idea of distance on the map. They measure distance in time, not miles. “ How far away is the post office ” you ask. “ Oh,” they answer, “ it’s about five minutes from here.” You say, “ Yes, but how many miles is it ” They don’t know.
It’s true that a person doesn't know the answer to your question sometimes. What happens in such a situation A New Yorker might say, “ Sorry, I have no idea.” But in Yucatan, Mexico, no one answers “ I don't know”. People in Yucatan believe that “I don't know” is impolite. They usually give an answer, often a wrong one. A tourist can get very, very lost in Yucatan!
8. When a tourist asks the Japanese the way to a certain place, they usually _______ .
A. describe the place carefully
B show him a map of the place
C. tell him the names of the streets
D. refer to recognizable buildings and places
9. What is the place where people measure distance in time
A. New York. B. Los Angles.
C. Kansas C. Iowa
10. People inYucatan may give a tourist a wrong answer ________ .
A. in order to save time B. as a test
C. so as to be polite D. for fun
11. What can we infer from the text
A. It’s important for travelers to understand cultural differences.
B. It’s useful for travelers to know how to ask the way properly.
C. People have similar understanding of politeness.
D. New Yorkers are generally friendly to visitors.
D
A new study has found that social media could be affecting the sleep of young adults.
The study is a project of researchers at the University of Pittsburgh's School of Medicine. They found that young people who often use social media are more likely to suffer from sleep disorders than those who use social media less. The researchers say doctors should ask young adults about their use of social media when treating sleep issues.
“This is one of the first pieces of evidence that social media use really can influence your sleep.” said Jessica C Levenson. She was the lead author of a report on the study.
The researchers set out to examine the connection between social media use and sleep among young adults. Levenson noted that these young adults are possibly the first “generation to grow up with social media.”
The researchers wanted to find out how often young people used social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Credit and Tumbler. For the study, they gave questionnaires to nearly 1,800 adults, aged 19 to 32. On average, members of the study group used social media sites one hour a day. They also "visited various social media 30 times per week.”
Thirty percent of the study's participants reported having serious problems with sleeping. Those people who used social media a lot were three times more likely to have a sleep disorder. And those who spent the most time on social media were two times as likely to suffer from sleep disturbances.
Levenson said the number of times a person visits social media is a better predictor of sleep problems than overall time spent on social media. If this is true, she adds, then practices that stop such behaviors may be the most effective.
12. What's the main idea of the text
A. The researchers focus on social media.
B. The researchers manage to handle sleep problems.
C. Doctors treat young patients.
D. Social media affects sleep.
13. When treating sleep problems, doctors are advised to ________.
A offer some advice about giving up social media
B. ask the patients about young adults’ use of social media
C. give young adults some medicine
D. ask about the patients' living conditions
14. How did the researchers mainly carry out the study
A. By doing online research. B. By giving an example.
C. By collecting published data. D. By doing questionnaires.
15. What can be inferred from the text
A. Men are more likely to suffer from a sleep disorder than women.
B. People often using social media are less likely to have a sleep disorder.
C. Using computers less helps avoid sleep problems completely.
D. Sleep problems can be determined by the times of a person visiting social media.

When Ruth Hagan was 78 years old, she visited her daughter Judy and teenage granddaughter Marcy in California. They headed for their cabin, going forty miles up and down the mountains in their Bronco (野马), winding terrifyingly close to cliffs (悬崖).
After dinner Marcy announced the water tank(水箱) was low and that she would take the Bronco down to the pump and get water. Ruth was nervous about her young granddaughter driving down the narrow dirt road by herself, but Judy reminded her that Marcy had been driving vehicles up there on the ranch(大牧场) roads since she was 12.
“Just be careful, Marcy,” her mother warned. “The cliff side is pretty shaky. Be sure to hug the mountain side.” Fifteen minutes later Judy was still watching when suddenly she screamed. “Oh no! She went over the cliff, Momma! The Bronco and Marcy—they went over! We have to help her! Come on!”
Judy took off running. Ruth ran behind her, but Judy was quickly out of sight. Ruth raced down the steep hill, breathing hard. She ran on and on, down the hill, up the next, trying to catch up with her daughter. It was getting harder and harder to see anything at dusk.
Ruth stopped and looked around. She screamed into the darkness, “Judy, where are you ” Off to her immediate right and down the cliff she heard, “Down here, Mother! Don’t come near the edge! I slipped on loose rocks and fell over. I’m down about twenty feet.”
“Oh, dear God, Judy, what can I do ”
“Just stay back, Momma! I think I can crawl(爬) back up. I saw the white roof of the Bronco when I was falling, Momma, and I heard Marcy calling for help. She’s alive! But she’s way down there in the valley. You have to go back to the cabin and phone for help. Tell them to send a helicopter. We have to get Marcy out!!”
Ruth turned around and started running back the hill she’d just ran awkwardly down. Up the hill, down the next. She had one hill left to climb when she fell on her face. Chest pains took her breath away. She started to sob.

C

A. offer some advice about giving up social media
B. ask the patients about young adults’ use of social media
C. give young adults some medicine
D. ask about the patients' living conditions
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. D 15. D
【解析】

【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段Levenson said the number of times a person visits social media is a better predictor of sleep problems than overall time spent on social media.可知,一个人上社交媒体的次数比花在社交媒体上的总时间能更好的预示睡眠问题,故D项“一个人的睡眠问题可由上社交媒体的次数决定”正确。

【答案】One possible version:
At that moment something went through her body. It was like a powerful energy and she knew for certain that she was the only person that could help Judy and Marcy out! She was the hope to them. Never before in her life had she been overwhelmed with such determination and perseverance. Despite her unbearable pain, she stood up. Ruth ran on confidently, faster than she had before, and up that last big hill. She turned into the cabin driveway, pushed through the front door and dialed 911.
She sputtered (语无伦次地 )the details of the disaster, pointing out directions to where Marcy and Judy were. As soon as she hung up, she started down the mountain again to meet and guide the rescuers. An hour later, the fire trucks, ambulance and, finally, the Flight for Life helicopter arrived. Judy was rescued, but it took three and a half hours to cut Marcy free from the wreckage at the bottom of the cliff. At last she was pulled out of the back end of the Bronco and carried to the waiting ambulance. She was rushed to the hospital for treatment. Ruth Hagan knew the mountain didn’t beat them.
