A
Like humans, animals need sleep too. A big problem for animals in the wild is keeping their enemies away while they sleep. Animals take care of this problem in different ways.
Anolis lizards live in many areas including tropical rainforests. They often sleep on leaves at the end of long branches. A leaf might seem like a strange bed, but it works like an alarm. If a hungry snake wiggles a branch, the lizard wakes up and leaps to safety.
Chimpanzees take their sleep very seriously. Each day, a chimpanzee builds itself a new, comfortable bed to sleep in. Scientists believe chimpanzees carefully choose a tree that is strong, where they build a nest using branches and leaves.
Parrotfish live among coral reefs in oceans. Every night, parrotfish usually sleep close to the rock in sheltered places. Some parrotfish go one step further by quickly making a slime layer that covers their whole body. This covering acts like a sleeping bag that provides a barrier against danger.
Bottle-nosed dolphins need to sleep, but they have to be on the ocean’s surface to breathe. They also need to watch over their young. What do they do While half of the dolphin’s brain sleeps, the other half stays awake. After a while, the sleeping half wakes up while the other half snoozes.
Sooty terns have the most amazing sleep. They nest on islands. When they are not nesting, they live for many years in the sky and on the sea’s surface. When and where can they sleep Scientists believe they are able to sleep while they are flying, staying out of the reach of enemies.

Andrew Bastawrous was 12 when he found out he could barely see. He was then socially awkward, failing at school and terrible at ball games.
Glasses turned his life around, yet even as a child he was aware of how lucky he was. Bastawrous grew up in the UK, but his family would visit poor parts of Egypt, where his parents were from. “Nobody there wore glasses, but I knew some people needed them,” he says. “It felt incredibly unfair. At 16, I decided I wasn’t going to feel guilty about it any more.” He determined there and then to become an eye surgeon, and he did.
In 2012, he and his wife moved with their one-year-old son to a small town 5 hours’ drive from Nairobi. They had limited electricity and running water. For 18 months, every time Bastawrous and his team set up their “mobile” eye clinic in yet another new location, they had to drag heavy, fragile hospital equipment cross-country. There was another problem, as one local doctor described it, “We don’t even have enough doctors and now you also want eye surgeons That’s probably a pipe dream.”
All this convinced Bastawrous that something fundamental was needed. So he started exploring ways to replace his clinic with a single, convenient device: a smartphone. He co-developed an app-based visual test that gathers as much information as the classic one, using similar principles. The critical difference is that almost anyone can carry it out after just a few minutes of training. Bastawrous co-founded a charitable company to develop and apply the technology more widely. His team also developed technologies that enabled a smartphone camera to take hospital-grade images of the back of the eye.
That’s a pretty good start, but Bastawrous has his sights set sky high. “I feel we’re at a tipping point now where this enormous problem will become a historical thing. That’s when I’ll sleep easy,” he says.
24. What drove Bastawrous to become an eye surgeon
A. His personal misfortune.
B. His burning sense of injustice.
C. His ambition to turn his life around.
D. His guilt about leaving his home country.
25. What can we infer about Bastawrous’s first 18 months in Africa
A. It’s hard and problematic.
B. It’s challenging but fruitful.
C. It’s adventurous and unrealistic.
D. It’s fundamental but innovative.
26. Bastawrous’s innovation can be described as ________
A. cheap and convenient treatments for patients.
B. a virtual and complete change from a classic test.
C. a smart and popularised application of technology.
D. fast and effective trainings of medical professionals.
27. What do Bastawrous’s words in the last paragraph show
A. His modest attitude to his past achievements.
B. His optimistic views on the cure for blindness.
C. His strong belief in the effects of future technology.
D. His firm determination to carry on his challenging career.

Sugar-free cookies, reduced-sugar cereal, sugar-free candy, diet soda... are these better for you Since sugar became a taboo (禁忌) in the nutrition and wellness world, sugar-free food items and drinks have acted as substitutes for once beloved sweet drinks and snacks. Claiming to be ZERO sugar means it is healthier, better for diabetics, and helps you slim down... Right
Wrong. Sugar-free isn’t better for you. In fact, sugar-free is worse.
Sugar-free means that artificial sweeteners (甜味剂) are used instead of real sugar. The problem:these sweeteners do not come from natural sources and they can cause you more harm than good.
Let’s get into what these artificial sweeteners actually are. Sugar-free sugar sounds wrong and that’s because there is no such thing as sugar-free sugar. Some of these sugar-free alternatives still contain sugar and the ones that don’t contain sugar have chemicals your body often does not know how to process.
Most artificial sweeteners are a lot sweeter than sugar,so only a tiny amount is needed. That’s why they can market sugar-free alternatives as “low-calorie” or “no-calorie”. It also means that you get no nutritional value from consuming them, which is why many sugar-free substitutes are classified as “non-nutritive”. These artificial sweeteners tend to hide under sneaky names. Actually, they are 200-600 times sweeter than sugar.
When you eat sweet stuff, your body continues to desire it and, even though your body cannot metabolize (代谢) these sugar-free alternatives, your brain does not know the difference. In turn, sugar-free alternatives connect to weight gain and type 2 diabetes (糖尿病).
Artificial sweeteners also damage your gut’s ability to break down sugarwhich impacts everything you eat. In other words, your body doesn’t know how to handle artificial sweeteners because they have nothing real to process.
A good rule of thumb: stay away from artificial sweeteners and look for non-sugar, natural sweeteners like Stevia or date sugar. In the war against artificial sweeteners and real sugar, both lose. Satisfy your sweet tooth with natural sugars that come from fruits and stay away from products claiming to be sugar-free or diet!
28. What can be learned about sugar-free products
A. They don’t taste sweet. B. They are more nutritious.
C. They contain artificial sweeteners. D. They contain natural sweeteners.
29. Why are sugar-free alternatives described as “low-calorie” or “no-calorie”
A. They won’t lead to weight gain. B. They are greener and healthier.
C. They are much to everyone’s taste. D. Small quantities of artificial sweeteners are used.
30. What do we know about artificial sweeteners
A. They present a bigger health risk. B. They can be easily broken down.
C. They are as sweet as sugar. D. They improve our ability to metabolize.
31. What is the author’s final conclusion
A. Real sugar is a better choice. B. Stay away from sugary products.
C. Sugar-free products are healthier. D. Choose sugar from natural sources.
D
Feeling overloaded by your to-do list can certainly make you unhappy, but new research suggests that more free time might not be the elixir many of us dream it could be.
In a new study released last week, researchers analyzed data from two large-scale (大规模) surveys about how Americans spend their time. Together, the surveys included more than 35,000 respondents. The researchers found that people with more free time generally had higher levels of subjective well-being — but only up to a point. People who had around two hours of free time a day generally reported they felt better than those who had less time. But people who had five or more hours of free time a day generally said they felt worse. So ultimately the free-time “sweet spot” might be two to three hours per day, the findings suggest.
Part of finding this seemingly tricky “sweet spot” has to do with how people spend the extra time they have, the researchers behind the new study argue. They conducted several smaller online experiments. In one they asked participants to imagine having 3.5 to 7 free hours per day. They were asked to imagine spending that time doing “productive” things (like exercising) or to imagine doing “unproductive” activities (like watching TV). Study participants believed their well-being would suffer if they had a lot of free time during the day — but only if they used it unproductively. Though that experiment was hypothetical, which is one limitation of the new research, it’s certainly in line with other research showing that being in a state of “flow” can be good for people’s mental health.
Of course, what feels “productive” is up to you. Many traditionally productive or purposeful activities can be easy and fun. Engaging in a bit of low-key cardio, like walking and jogging, can help burn stress. Free-time activities like reading or cooking are also known to put people in a state of flow.
32. What does the underlined word “elixir” in paragraph 1 refer to
A. Magic solution.
B Physical power.
C Psychological test.
D. Relaxed atmosphere.
33. How did the researchers carry out the new study
A. By doing large-scale online surveys.
B. By giving interviews and mental tests.
C. By comparing respondents’ backgrounds.
D. By conducting experiments and analyzing data.
34. What is a distinct finding of the new research
A. Doing unproductive things leads to unhappiness.
B. Being in a state of flow benefits people’s mental health.
C Man’s well-being is positively related to the free time they have.
D. How people spend their free time affects their sense of well-being.
35. What is the focus of the last paragraph
A. The importance of burning stress.
B. Easy and fun activities to kill time.
C. Further explanation of being productive.
D. The benefits of engaging in free-time activities.

“What are going to plant, Nana ” asked Amy. “I like big, yellow sunflowers.”
“I’m going to plant vegetables. That way we can have them to eat when they are ready,” said Nana.
“How long does that take ” asked Michael. He liked vegetables sometimes, especially carrots.
“It will take a few months before anything is ready to eat,” answered Nana. The children were surprised.
“Months Why would you do all that work and then have to wait so long ” asked Amy. “You should just go to the store and buy them.”
“Patience, my sweeties! Don’t you know food always tastes best when you grow it yourself ” replied Nana. “And if all of you come to help, it won’t be too much work.”
“I’ll help you, Nana,” offered Justin. He put down the soccer ball and went to look at the gardening tools Nana had laid out. “What do we do first ” Michael and Amy came over to look, too.
Nana taught Justin how to use a trowel (小铲子) to dig small rows of holes for the seeds. Next, Nana showed Amy how to pour the seeds into each hole. And it was Michael’s job to cover up the holes with soil. Finally, Amy wrote the vegetable names on sticks that Justin pushed into the ground. “This way we can remember which vegetable seeds we have planted,” said Nana.
When they had planted everything, the children took turns filling up the watering can so that Nana could make the soil nice and wet for the seeds to start to grow.
“Now we just water them a little every day, and with some time and sunshine, we’ll have some delicious things to eat in the summer,” said Nana.

C 29. D 30. A 31. D
根据第三段中“Sugar-free means that artificial sweeteners (甜味剂) are used instead of real sugar.(无糖是指使用人工甜味剂代替真正的糖)”可知,所谓的“无糖产品”,其实是用人工甜味剂来代替真正的糖。
根据第五段中“Most artificial sweeteners are a lot sweeter than sugar,so only a tiny amount is needed. That’s why they can market sugar-free alternatives as‘low-calorie’or‘no-calorie’.(大多数人造甜味剂比糖甜得多,所以只需要少量。这就是为什么他们可以以‘低卡路里’或‘无卡路里’来推销无糖替代品)”可知,由于人工甜味剂甜度非常高,所以其用量非常小,因此商家将其“无糖产品”标榜为“低卡路里”或“零卡路里”。故选D。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第三段中“In turn, sugar-free alternatives connect to weight gain and type 2 diabetes (糖尿病).(反过来,无糖替代品会导致体重增加和2型糖尿病)”以及倒数第二段中“Artificial sweeteners also damage your gut’s ability to break down sugar, which impacts everything you eat.(人工甜味剂还会损害肠道分解糖的能力,从而影响你吃的所有东西)”可知,这些所谓的“无糖产品”中含有的人工甜味剂会导致肥胖和糖尿病,还会损害肠道分解糖的能力,因此是更大的健康隐患。故选A。
根据最后一段中“A good rule of thumb: stay away from artificial sweeteners and look for non-sugar, natural sweeteners like Stevia or date sugar.(一个很好的经验法则:远离人造甜味剂,寻找无糖的天然甜味剂,如甜菊糖或枣糖)”可知,作者认为,无论糖还是人工甜味剂都不是好的选择,后者危害更大;喜欢甜食者最好的选择是摄取自然的糖分——比如来自水果的糖。故选D。
D
Feeling overloaded by your to-do list can certainly make you unhappy, but new research suggests that more free time might not be the elixir many of us dream it could be.
In a new study released last week researchers analyzed data from two large-scale (大规模) surveys about how Americans spend their time.
B. Physical power.
C. Psychological test.
C. Man’s well-being is positively related to the free time they have.
D. How people spend their free time affects their sense of well-being.
35. What is the focus of the last paragraph
A. The importance of burning stress.
B Easy and fun activities to kill time.
C. Further explanation of being productive.
D. The benefits of engaging in free-time activities.
A 33. D 34. D 35. B
根据划线词所在句“Feeling overloaded by your to-do list can certainly make you unhappy, but new research suggests that more free time might not be the elixir many of us dream it could be.(被待办事项清单压得喘不过气来肯定会让你不开心,但新的研究表明,更多的空闲时间可能不是我们许多人梦想的灵丹妙药)”中的but转折可知,面对待办事项时,我们最需要的可能是时间,但是研究表明,事实并非如我们想象的这般,太多的空闲时间反而不是解决待办事项的最好方法。 故选A。
根据第二段第一句“In a new study released last week, researchers analyzed data from two large-scale (大规模) surveys about how Americans spend their time.(在上周发布的一项新研究中,研究人员分析了两项关于美国人如何打发时间的大规模调查的数据)”及第三段第二句“They conducted several smaller online experiments.(他们进行了几项规模较小的在线实验)”可知,研究者是通过实验和数据分析的形式进行研究的。
根据第三段第五句“Study participants believed their well-being would suffer if they had a lot of free time during the day — but only if they used it unproductively.(研究参与者相信,如果他们白天有很多空闲时间,但是没有有效利用时,他们的幸福感会变差)”可知,人们如何度过空闲时间会影响到幸福感。

根据前文“Once you have a pole in the ground, tie 6 to 10 pieces of ribbon around the top of the pole.(一旦你在地上有了一根柱子,围绕着柱子的顶部绑上6到10条丝带。)”以及后文“Let everyone catch the end of a ribbon and face the same direction, and dance circles around the pole.(让每个人抓住丝带的末端,面向同一个方向,绕着杆子跳舞。)”
根据后文“Remember, May Day is all about spring turning to summer and celebrating all things fresh and alive. Make an angel food cake and top it with diced (切片的) strawberries, or you could even top the cake with homemade cream.(记住,国际劳动节就是关于春转夏,庆祝一切新鲜鲜活的事物的节日。做一个天使蛋糕,在上面放上草莓丁,或者你甚至可以在蛋糕上放上自制的奶油。)”可知,这一段是关于做蛋糕的,而且要用新鲜的材料才符合这个节日的意义。该空放在段首,起引出段落内容的作用,所以A选项“用新鲜的食材烤一个蛋糕。”符合题意。故选A。
根据后文“Plant some new flowers along your walkway, or build a small flower garden that you’ll get to enjoy year after year.(沿着人行道种一些新的花,或者建一个小花园,你可以年复一年地享受。)”
根据该段第一句“Have a picnic outside.(在户外野餐)”及空格前句“Pack some fruits and vegetables, such as watermelon, apples and tomatoes.(带上一些水果和蔬菜,比如西瓜、苹果和西红柿。)”
根据该段第一句“Take a long nature walk to enjoy the fresh air.(在大自然中散步,呼吸新鲜空气。)”及空格后内容“You could even make a nature hunt where they can find different things, like rocks, leaves, or different kinds of flowers.(你们甚至可以进行一次自然寻宝,在那里他们可以找到不同的东西,如石头、树叶或不同种类的花。)”

It can easily be seen that the percentage of students who choose listening to English songs and watching English movies is respectively 65% and 50%. However, those choosing reading English books and visiting English learning websites only account for 18% and 12%.
As far as I’m concerned, it is a disturbing trend. For students, what benefits most to their study is reading English books. It was early spring and Nana was in the backyard with her grandchildren. Amy, Michael, and Justin were playing when Nana said, “I’m going to start planting my garden. Who wants to help me ”
“What are going to plant, Nana ” asked Amy.

Whenever the grandchildren came to visit, they would dash into the garden.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Finally, Nana said it was time for the first harvest.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Possible version1 :
Whenever the grandchildren came to visit, they would dash into the garden. Not surprisingly, they were going to see how the garden was growing. After watering the vegetables, they would remove the weeds that popped up around the plants and apply organic fertilizer under Nana's instruction if necessary. As time went by, the plants were growing taller and stronger. When they noticed the vegetables flowering and producing fruits, their eyes were sparkling like diamonds. Never had they looked forward to summer like this before. But they clearly knew that it's worthwhile to wait for the inviting results.
Finally, Nana said it was time for the first harvest. Hearing that, the children all jumped into the air and cheers filled the whole garden. Nana gave them each baskets and, together they gathered some of the cucumbers, carrots and tomatoes, which were turned into delicacies. “Who wants to help eat this fresh salad ” Nana asked. “Me!” everyone responded loudly. Tasting the salad, they thought nothing could be more delicious, because it was they who grew these vegetables. They all learned that many hands make light work and patience really pays off.
Possible version 2 :
Whenever the grandchildren came to visit, they would dash into the garden. Eager to help grow the vegetables well, they first took turns to water the plants. Then Nana showed them which plants needed trimming or which needed tying up to grow tall and straight. Day after day, spring turned into summer and finally, the plants started revealing their colorful secrets. The children were thrilled to see the tomatoes turning red, the cucumbers hiding under the green leaves and the peppers growing bigger. Not until then did they realize that Nana was right-- all they needed was patience.
Finally, Nana said it was time for the first harvest. With baskets ready, Nana and the children started out on their business. Nana took them around the garden and picked some tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and cabbages. Then for the following hour, they were busying making vegetable salad. The children helped wash the dirt off the food while Nana chopped up the vegetables. When Nana asked who wanted to try the fresh salad, everyone expressed their willingness excitedly. “OK. Amy, get the plates. Justin, get the water and cups, and Michael, get the forks. Let's celebrate the harvest!”
