I went shopping for a dress to wear to my daughter's high school graduation half a year ago. To my horror,I could only fit into a size 20.
Being overweight most of my adult life, I always had very little self-confidence. Wearing a dress I didn't like to such an important event was enough to make me look for help. Thankfully, a friend of mine was attending Weight Watchers meetings, and I noticed her great progress. Her success inspired me to give it a try. I joined Weight Watchers, attended their meetings and started following their Weight-Loss System.
I focused on the plan with determination and never missed a weekly meeting! I discovered that I enjoyed the benefits of having the help and support of others. I also read the weekly online e-newsletter and was inspired by the stories, recipes and information offered there, I also read magazines produced by Weight Watchers, which have great tips and new ideas in each issue.
It's hard for me to even remember the person I was before my amazing change. I didn't walk anywhere and couldn't wash my car or walk my dog. Today I do these simple tasks without even thinking about them. But the change didn't happen overnight. I had to exercise with patience and perseverance. I decided to take it one day at a time and stick with it for good.
The "new me" is more self-confident and healthier. I love how I feel now. I have more energy and feel like I'm 25 again. So why not give Weight Watchers a try if you have the same overweight problem
24. The underlined word "inspired" in the second paragraph can be replaced by ______.
A. excited B. moved C. encouraged D. forced
25. We can learn from the passage that the writer ______
A. often went shopping before she lost weight B. was overweight when she was a child
C. ever wanted to give up losing weight D. now is more confident than before
26. This passage is written to ______.
A. tell us how to gain self-confidence
B. show off the great progress that the author has made
C. give us some tips on how to lose weight quickly
D. advise overweight people to give Weight Watchers a try
27. Which of the following word will you use to describe the writer
A. Weak. B. Calm. C. Patient. D. Silent.

For late 19th-century North Americans and Europeans, a display of tableware(餐具) could reveal much about someone's social position, as the wealthy took great care to get different kinds of forks for everything. Before the 18th century, people of all classes usually ate with a knife and a spoon.
The fork's path to the table was hard-won and slow. In ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome, forks were used for slicing food into pieces or lifting meat from a pot or fire.
Following a reduction in size, the fork appeared to have entered dining areas in the courts of the Middle East and Byzantine Empire by the eighth and ninth centuries, and became common among wealthy families there by the tenth century. Early in the 11th century, it appeared in various pieces of European art. In the late 11th century, St. Peter Damian from Ostia wrote about a Byzantine princess who used forks and regarded her dying of a disease as punishment for such "luxury".
The fork's slow conquest of Europe was carried out from Italy. Motivated by the same concerns for hygiene(卫生), forks were bought by wealthy Britons, inspired by Queen Victoria, who regarded fork use as a sign of good manners.
The fork's introduction to North America dates back to 1633, when John Winthrop, a founder of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, was gifted a set of forks. The Industrial Revolution strengthened the fork's presence on dining room tables as production of flatware became less expensive. Writing in 1896 in Social Eriquere, Mau d C. Cooke declared the fork had finally conquered the knife in America and "any attempt to give the knife importance at table is looked upon as an offense(冒犯) against good taste."
28. What can we learn about forks from paragraphl
A. They were used improperly in the 18th century.
B. They had many different types in the 19th century.
C. They were popular in Europe before the 18th century.

C. To cut food. D. To create works of art.
30. Who was against the use of forks

C. Queen Victoria D. Maud C. Cooke.
31. What marked the beginning of the fork's introduction to North America

C. John Winthrop receiving forks as presents. D. Mau d C. Cooke writing Social Etiquette.

"There are more people actively learning a language through DuoLingo than in the entire US public schoolsystem." says Luis von Ahn, founder of the free language learning app. Since its launch(投放市场) in 2012, more than 30 million people have downloaded(下载) the app, which gamified education and attracted many language learners.
The growth of technology for educational use has changed the way in which people learn and receive education. This is particularly true for languages, an area in which the explosion of mobile apps and interactive software has provided choices to a range of people who were previously unable to receive foreign language education.
Von Ahn says that when he founded DuoLingo he decided to find a way for people to learn a language for free. Free use of languages was something he had a personal interest in addressing: he grew up in Guatemala, where he was surrounded by people all trying to learn English, half of whom were failing to do so and a lot of whom could not afford it.
One of the big changes caused by tech is the change in language learners. Languages have long been connected with the rich people, but now people from less rich backgrounds are finding affordable ways to learn.
Von Ahn says an unexpected result of DuoLingo being an app is that it's attracting an unlikely type of user. DuoLingo was designed(设计) to be like a game' and what the company has found is that many users aren't even necessarily diehard language fans, they're just looking for an educational way to kill some time.
"They're still procrastinating from something else, but at least it's somewhat useful." says Von Ahn, "Thetruth of the matter is that learning a language takes months or years. We have to find a way to keep them interested and that's where the gamification came in."
32. What can we say about DuoLingo after its launch
A. It is used by entire US schools. B. It costs 30 dollars to download.
C. It changes the use of languages. D. It makes education more enjoyable.
33. Why does the author mention Von Ahn in paragraph 3
A. To show his poverty in childhood. B. To explain why he founded the app.
C. To prove he was interested in the app. D. To find out how he designed the app.
34. What change does DuoLingo bring to language learners
A· They can master a language faster. B. They become language fans totally.
C. They can learn in a low-cost way. D. They can now use it to kill some time.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Reasons for Learning a Language B. How to Learn a Language Online
C. The Development of a Language App D. Mastering a Language with DuoLingo

Dear Worried,
I am Jamie, editor of the Youth column in our school English newspaper. Learning from your letter that your study and life are being affected by losing temper recently, I am writing to share with you my personal suggestions and perspectives.
First, so much academic pressure do you bear that you tend to lose temper, which is quite normal for teenagers like you. Consequently, there is no need to worry about it. In addition, were I you, I would talk with my close friends, from whom I might get spiritual comfort. Finally, to relieve your physical and mental stress, not only should you keep regular exercise, but also you should listen to some soft music.
I sincerely hope that my above-mentioned suggestions can be beneficial to you and you can recover soon.
Yours
sincerely,
Jamie

Suddenly, Mary caught sight of a black box under the chair where Linda put her bag. She went over and then opened the box to find Linda's tape was just inside. At that time, she was in a dilemma, "This is my chance to defeat her." But on a second thought, she changed her mind, "If I hide it, I will win the competition but I may lose something." Mary also rushed out to look for Linda. At that moment, Linda came back in low spirits. Mary handed
the box to her and said, "Take it easy, we are the best." Soon, it's her turn to come on the stage.
Linda finished her dancing successfully and then came Mary's turn. Hearing her name called, Mary walked on the stage with her heart beating faster and faster. She kept reminding herself, "Don't be nervous. I have been practicing for so long, and I will certainly make it." But the serious pain in her arm came again when she was performing the most difficult spin. She fell down on the stage. Linda and Jessica rushed over to help her up. Finally, Mary lost the game but she believed she had won everything.
