熊孩子保险箱脱险
I worked at a local station of the Berlin fire department. We got an alert(警报) around 8:25 pm that Friday and rushed to the fire engine, where the printout from the dispatcher(调度员) said there was a nine-year-old boy locked in a safe.
I asked myself: if it were a safe, would it be airtight I was aware that it might already be too late by the time we arrived. I had to plan for a bad outcome. On the other hand, if we were in time, how long would it take us to open the safe I knew it would be an incredibly difficult task. It’s what safes are designed for―not to be opened.
It took less than five minutes to reach the property. When I saw a woman crying on the street,
I knew the situation was serious. She was the boy’s mother and she led us into the basement. She told us the boy was alive and we started talking to him; he was very calm. We asked how it had happened: during a game of hide and seek with his five-year-old brother, he had thought the safe would be a good place to hide.
The boy’s parents had got the house from his mother’s father. The unlocked safe had been there when they moved in and was in an area they didn’t use much. The boy’s little brother had shut the safe, then, when he couldn’t open it again. The only person who knew the combination was the boy’s late grandfather.
From the outset, the biggest priority was getting oxygen to the boy. We got oxygen from the hospital. The boy said that he could feel a thin stream of air. I asked his parents if anyone had opened the safe before and they said no. So we had to guess a six-digit code(密码). We started typing them in―but we had to wait 10 minutes between each attempt before we could try again. So quickly we tried them all. No luck.

We were fully prepared at this point to open the safe by force, starting with a drill. We taught the boy to put his hands over his ears while we were drilling and to take them off only when we shook the safe. He was sweaty and his clothes were wet from breathing in that tiny space for so long. But he was so calm the whole time, following our commands and talking to us. We made a hole in the back. It was dangerous, but I was confident that we could get him out safely.(79w)
Then, just as we started to make the first cut, my workmate typed in the correct code. We’d asked the mother again to write down any significant date and it turned out to be her brother’s birthday. We were amazed. We had been trying for three hours and now all of a sudden this little boy was standing in front of me, rubbing his eyes. His parents were so happy that he was out. He had a hug with his tearful mother, a checkup from the doctor, and then went for a shower happily.(77w)
读后续写-Evacuation from the island
试题呈现:
Rising to reach for the book on the desk in the living room, Gudrun fell over her little brother, who had crawled out from underneath her chair. “Arnar! Why do you always have to be right under me ”
The five-year-old giggled. “I was hiding," he said, “and you found me.” “I'm not playing," Gudrun scolded, “I'm knitting. And it's time for you to go to bed." Her parents had gone out for the evening, leaving Gudrun in charge.
“Let me hide once more,” Arnar begged. “Then I'll go to sleep, I promise.”
Gudrun couldn't help smiling. “Oh, all right." She turned back to her knitting. “I'll look for you when I've finished this row.”
“Here's a clue,” Arnar called as he skipped away. “Look for me where I always am.”
But Gudrun was already absorbed in her work.
Gudrun wasn't sure what had awakened her in the middle of the night. Was it the urgency in Mamma's voice or the frightening and low rumble that rolled through her room Gudrun found herself suddenly wide awake, drawn to the window by a strange and unfamiliar brilliance outside.“An eruption," Marma said as she began to gather Gudrun's clothes.“Maybe Helgafell, maybe a new volcano. We must leave the island quickly.” “Tonight How ” Gudrun asked, her heart pounding.“Where will we go ”
“We're lucky, The fishing boats will take us to the mainland,” Mamma turned to face Gudrun.“Pabbi has already gone to the harbor. I'm going to help Margret.” Their elderly neighbor lived alone. Mamma proceeded, “can you dress Arnar and take him to the harbor by yourself ”
“Of course,” she declared. Everyone would help tonight. Icelanders had always worked together to survive in a land ruled by volcanoes, glaciers, and ocean.
Gudrun dressed and ran to her brother's room, “Amar!” she cried, “Wake up!” Hearing no response, Gudrun hurried to the bed and pulled back her brother's thick cover.

Arnar wasn’t there! The unexpected sight left Gudrun dumbfounded, wondering where her little brother could have gone in this critical moment. As there was very limited time left for them to leave the island, Gudrun became increasingly anxious, worried that she not could find his brother and take him to the harbor safe and sound. She called his name madly, but no response. She searched every possible corner, but no sign of Arnar. “I should have taken care of Arnar, but I just ...” she blamed herself. Just at the very moment, Arnar’s words “Look for me where I always am.” flashed into her mind. “He must be there!” Two at a time, Gudrun rushed into her bedroom and looked under the bed.
There, curled around a worn stuffed bear, was Arnar, sound asleep. Obviously, he was still in his sweet dream, without any knowledge of what was happening outside. Seeing this, Gudrun felt a surge of guilt welling up in her heart. Immediately, she scooped Arnar up, and ran all the way to the harbor, where her parents and Margret were waiting anxiously. Once aboard, Gudrun put Arnar into her mother’s arms and couldn’t wait to share the incident, still panting and puffing. “Sorry, but I...” she murmured. Before she could finish, dad already gathered her into his warm arms, really glad that Gudrun’s company with Arnar and her quick thinking and action saved Arnar. And Arnar, still in his sound sleep, was whispering constantly, “Look for me where I always am.”

Arnar wasn’t there! A knot of guilt formed in Gudrun’s stomach as she began to remember Arnar had run off to hide one last time. Soon after, she had fallen into her own bed, completely forgetting the game and her brother. “Arnar!” Gudrun screamed, looking under the child’s bed and in his closet. Tears burned her cheeks as the noise outside reminded Gudrun that this was no game. She raised a foot to stamp her fury into the floor, then froze as Arnar’s clue suddenly echoed through her mind: “He’s always right under me!” With a shout she dashed back to her own room. Falling to the floor, Gudrun peered under her bed.
There, curled around a worn stuffed bear, was Arnar, sound asleep. Without thinking twice, Gudrun dragged him out, scooped him up and rushed to the harbor. Hardly had she arrived there breathlessly when she spotted her anxious parents and Margret. Hours later, Pabbi’s boat pulled up to a harbor on the mainland. The deck was bustling with activity as the islanders prepared to go ashore. Arnar, still clutching his bear, slept peacefully in Gudrun’s lap. Gudrun shook him to wake up gently. Arnar
rubbed his eyes, struggling to stand up and lost his balance, causing both of them to stumble. “I’m always right under you,” Arnar whimpered, half-asleep. Gudrun smiled and bent to whisper in his ear. “Never mind. You’re just where you belong.” The little boy reached for her hand. Gudrun grasped it firmly. Together, they followed Mamma off the boat.

My family moved in a small house in Brighton, Colorado on my seventh birthday. My first memory is our neighbor Bill, an old man, handing me strawberries from his garden through a hole in the chain-link(铁丝网) fence. “We need to make the hole bigger,"” he said jokingly. Later I knew that he lived alone.
Bill spent much time working in the garden, and I was always talking to him from our yard. I was a chatterbox. I think what drew me to Bill is that he never got tired of listening to me. l also think Bill saw a lot of himself in me-we were both lonely and anxious-and that may be why he always took the time to listen to me. It was a wonderful connection.
There weren't any kids of my age in the neighborhood, and my parents were very busy, so l mostly played in the yard with my dog, I had a lot of imaginary friends-a whole family, actually, with a wife, children , a best friend...no joke. Weird kid.
One day, my parents asked Bill whether he'd watch me while they were away on business. This worked well for everyone, so it became a somewhat monthly occurrence. Bill had a spare room in his house, which became " my” room.
Bill promised to teach me to drive the lawn tractor(割草机)someday and I was always looking forward to it. In winter. Bill would attach a snowplow(铲雪机) to the front of the lawn tractor. I seriously told him that I would invent a better snowplow when I grew up. "Sure you will. You'll get a patent certificate. It takes a certificate to prove an important thing," Bill said with a smile.
One snowy morning , an idea suddenly hit me. My parents were watching TV when I spit it out. What if I adopted Bill as my grandpa " My parents said I could go over and ask him.

范文:
I knocked on his door, sat down in his living room, and asked, “Can I adopt you as my grandpa ” A flicker of confusion flashed across his face but after seconds’ hesitation, he said, “Of course! Actually I have already treated you as my grandson.” Hearing the words coming out of his mouth, I sprang up like a rocket and threw myself into his arms. “Wow, that’s great! Thank you, grandpa! I love you so much!” Bill winked at me and said, “I’ll teach you a new skill -- drive the lawn tractor as a gift for my newly adopted grandson.” Kissing him on the cheeks, I happily agreed. (88 words)
The next morning, while learning to drive the lawn tractor with a snowplow, I accidentally plowed down our chain-link fence. “Bang!” A loud noise came to our eardrums. Frightened, I was at a loss, not knowing how to stop the tractor. “Well done! Keep driving!” My grandpa, who was sitting next to me, clapped. Curious, I looked up. He continued without a sense of criticism, “I’ve been thinking of knocking down the fence. You helped me do it.” Weeks later Bill’s birthday came. Wethrew a great partyfor him in the bigger yard, where I sent him my handmade "Adoption Certificate" with my name signed already. Laughter lingered in the open air. (94 words)
