Unit 6 Earth first
一、阅读理解
A
Tariq Qaiser, an architect, is trying to protect mangroves(红树).The trees could save Pakistan’s largest city Karachi, sitting on the Arabian Sea, from natural disasters. He comes to Bundal Island several times a week to document the illegal cutting of mangrove trees. "On some days, you can’t hear a single bird because the chain saws are so loud. The trees are cut down illegally for firewood," he says, shaking his head. Besides, developers clear the mangroves to make room for construction.
Karachi has a hot climate, and its concrete buildings and paved roads make it even hotter.Offshore, there are islands where mangroves grow. They could be the key to slowing climate change. Mangrove forests pull carbon dioxide out of the air, holding four times as much of the planet-warming gas as other forests can. They support diverse ecosystems. As sea levels rise with global warming, the trees could play a big role in protecting coastal cities like Karachi from flooding. Karachi’s mangroves are disappearing. But its numbers are rising in other parts of Pakistan. With replanting efforts, the country has tripled(成为三倍)its mangrove coverage over the past 30 years.
Qaiser’s work may have worked. Recently, a court in Karachi declared Bundal Island’s mangroves to be protected forests. But unforested parts of the island remain unprotected, and developers want to build there. City officials say this could provide much-needed housing and bring in billions of dollars. They claim that some of that money could be used to plant mangroves in other parts of Pakistan.
Ecologist Rafiul Haq appreciates Qaiser’s "extraordinary work" educating the public about mangroves. But he wishes Qaiser would look at the bigger picture. "Only 7% of Pakistan’s mangroves are in Karachi," Haq says. He thinks it’s wrong to focus on the losses in 7% of the country while ignoring the success in 93% of it. But Qaiser believes it’s important to protect every bit.
  巴基斯坦建筑师Tariq Qaiser为保护红树林而奔走,并取得了一定的效果。
1.What do we know about Karachi’s mangroves?
A. They occupy the building land.
B. They’re home to various birds.
C. They’re primarily being used as firewood.

解析 D 细节理解题。由第一段中的"The trees could save Pakistan’s largest city Karachi, sitting on the Arabian Sea, from natural disasters"可知,本题选D。
2.Why are efforts made to conserve the mangrove trees?
A. Their birthplaces meet crisis.
B. They boast huge diversity.

解析 C 推理判断题。由第二段中的"the key to slowing climate change...pull carbon dioxide out of the air...support diverse ecosystems...the trees could play a big role in protecting coastal cities like Karachi from flooding"可知,红树林可以减缓气候变化、吸收空气中的二氧化碳、支持生态多元化、并保护海滨城市免遭洪灾。据此可以推断,保护它们是因为它们与自然的关系非常密切,故选C。
3.What does the Karachi government plan to do?
A. Grow mangroves in other areas.
B. Destroy buildings to grow mangroves.
C. Build more mangrove reserves.

[2024安徽六校开学测试]This 3-mile stretch of sand and tide pools beneath a fortress of 80-foot bluffs is a California tourism poster if there ever was one. Nothing disturbs the perfect, sunny view, except — once you notice them — microplastic particles. But you have to look close — on-your-hands-and-knees close — to see one. And once you do, you see another and another — so many that you may not think of this, or any beach, in the same way again. These tiny preproduction plastic balls that manufacturers melt down to form everything have been escaping factories, container ships, trains, trucks and public notice for decades.
The 2- to 3-millimeter multicolored balls are a subset(子集) of microplastic particles less than 5 millimeters in size. Microplastic particles accumulate where water takes them, and they’ve been found on shorelines of every continent.
Mark McReynolds is an environmental scientist who’s now joined a global movement studying their trail into the environment. Establishing a baseline count of the presence of microplastic particles — and, more broadly, any microplastics — is the focus of Dr McReynolds’ scientific study here. Charting the count and noting tide, current, and weather conditions will show if amounts are increasing, and perhaps at what rate and why. That knowledge, he says, can inform solutions to plastic pollution such as regulation of their use.
"What are you doing? Picking up trash?" asks a steady stream of beach walkers whenever Dr McReynolds’ crew walks onto the beach and sets up equipment. These are teachable moments for Dr McReynolds.
One recent morning he told some beach walkers how microplastic particles are believed to absorb toxic chemicals, and — because they resemble fish eggs — are eaten by fish and birds and enter the food chain. Almost right on time, a seagull hopped up to a plastic-coated photo of microplastic particles and hungrily pecked(啄食) at it.
Will his work help save the world? Dr McReynolds wags (摇) a finger at that idea, "I won’t ever use that word — I won’t save the world from this pollution problem. Protect it, yes. We want to take care of it."

[中华传统/2024云南开远开学考]Elaine Su shared her experience of asking her neighbors to put up Chinese Lunar New Year decorations to help her two-year-old son experience the festival as part of the large community. In a neighborhood mostly consisting of non-Chinese residents, more than half of the households observed the tradition as well.
Interviewing her about the story provoked my own memories of celebrating Chinese Lunar New Year. The holiday was a big deal for me as a kid growing up in Jiangsu.
Legend says the holiday originated with the fight against a mythical beast called Nian, who came down from the mountains to hunt people on New Year’s Eve. Villagers discovered that Nian feared the colour red, candle light and loud noise. So they began to decorate with the vibrant hue, light their homes with lanterns and set off firecrackers to prevent its return.
On New Year’s Eve, my family would come together to celebrate with food prepared by my grandma. Moments before the countdown, the sound of firecrackers would fill every corner of our apartment and the celebrations continued into the next day.
For breakfast, we would eat yuanxiao, a kind of glutinous rice ball, which symbolizes the idea of reunion. Then, it was off to visit my grandparents, who were already awaiting us and my other extended family with lucky money and more traditional delicacies!
My favourite part of the holiday came when the adults were playing mahjong. My cousins and I were finally freed from our parents. With all the lucky money, we hit the streets and bought more snacks and firecrackers!
Having been in Canada for years, I further lost touch with my Chinese culture as I gradually dived into my new life in a new country. Maybe it’s time for me, like her, to reclaim Chinese Lunar New Year.

[2024重庆一中10月阶段考] Celebrations, after the pattern of Thomas Alva Edison’s famous quote, often appear to be one percent inspiration and 99 percent preparation. 1 Many of them are willing to go to great effort and expense to plan and attend public celebrations.
2 Logic suggests the first public celebrations were related to the patterns of existence. In hunter-gatherer societies, success in the search for food and shelter must have triggered the need to celebrate together. The earliest parades may have been processions of successful hunters returning to a joyful welcome by their thankful families. 3 And they served a broader social purpose.
Parades and other public celebrations have also become important economic events worldwide. In some places, the commercial aspect has made us forget the original reason for the celebration. 4 It was a festival on the day before the solemn six-week religious period known as Lent. Now lots of visitors attend the celebrations in Venice. Most of the city’s inhabitants would leave the city’s public areas to the crowds of tourists. But their purchases of meals, accommodations, and Carnival masks bring great sums of money into the economy of the city. One can’t blame the tourists. 5
Throughout history, the experience of a heartfelt celebration is always worth the time and money spent planning, preparing, organizing, and carrying out an event. The priority given to celebrating seems to put it alongside food, shelter, love, and freedom as a fundamental need of humanity.
 A. Take the Carnival celebrations in Venice for example.
B. People around the world take celebrating seriously.
C. Gradually, such celebrations became more regular and formal.
D. They are attracted by Venice’s unique and undeniable magic.
E. This does not mean modern celebrations are not socially conscious.
F. Exactly when and where humans began celebrating as a group is unknown.
G. There are records of religious parades and processions dating back to 3000 BC.

In some places, the commercial aspect has made us forget the original reason for the celebration"而来,是针对该句举的例子;而空后的内容是对A项的进一步说明。
5.D "One can’t blame the tourists"与D项(They are attracted by Venice’s unique and undeniable magic)之间是因果关系。

[2023重庆二测]Going against the tide of flocking(蜂拥) to well-known yet generally jam-packed tourist destinations on vacation, a growing number of holidaymakers in China tend to spend their leisure time at lesser-known resorts to seek unique, relaxing holiday experiences. Reverse tourism has emerged as a new trend among young holidaymakers in China.
Also, some vacationers chose less-travelled places to save on the cost of trips to popular destinations, which often require pricey tickets, meals and hotel stays. "Tourism used to be about sightseeing. Now it is about experiences," said Dai Bin, president of the China Tourism Academy. He said popular tourist spots are always packed and often raise their prices during holidays. As people become more mature travellers, they are increasingly unwilling to follow the herd. Some of them are simply looking to take a rest somewhere quiet for a couple of days, which is a good way to vacation.
In addition, lesser-known attractions are not as "commercial" and "standardized" as developed ones and are able to offer more genuine experiences and natural encounters, according to social media posts. And unlike popular destinations, some under-explored places with little online exposure can offer more surprises. Besides, as precautionary measures continue, travelling has an unpredictable quality. A traveller has no way of knowing what lies ahead before departure, be it a perfect holiday or one interrupted by a sudden outbreak.
"The rise of reverse tourism is not a bad thing," said an opinion piece in ZhengzhouDaily. It means that vacationers now have more options, which brings more possibilities to the tourism market, the article explains. More importantly, the trend is set to force popular destinations to improve themselves instead of resting on their achievements.

Born in 1902, Harry Beck was an English engineering draftsman(制图员) who brought about a small revolution in the early 1930s when he created a completely new map of the London Underground.
Before Beck’s design, early maps were usually drawn to a geographically accurate scale(比例). Map designers simply placed the subway lines on standard maps of the city streets. These maps clearly showed the subway lines that reached the areas outside the centre of London, but they made it difficult to make out the busy lines that joined directly under central London.
In the 1930s, Beck came up with a solution that would not take the geographical accuracy into account. He created a map that was a scaled-down linear diagram of the subway lines. More a basic outline of the lines than a true-to-life map, it didn’t tell travelers about how far it actually was between two points. Beck’s map had a clean structure with coloured lines. His idea was to create the plainest guide to show travellers how to get from one station to another.
It’s not clear what inspired him to start the project; he wasn’t asked to do it, but likely developed his design in his free time, while between jobs. It was more a presentation of his being inventive, in seeing a problem and coming up with an answer to it, than a response to public demand.
His design was then presented to the London Passenger Transport Board, whose members refused to accept it, feeling that not showing relative distances between stations was silly and unreasonable. Still, after a time, in order to increase subway ridership and therefore earn more money, the Board decided to print a limited number of copies. Gradually, Beck’s map became a huge success.
For most of his life, Beck continued to make small improvements to the diagram, but he kept its basic designs and ideas. His clear diagrammatic method of mapping has been generally accepted and followed in the field of information design not only in London but also around the world.

[2023长沙适应性考试]I’m a hiker — "born to hike".It does my heart and soul good to take a pack and head out on a trail(小路),especially when I am alone, and can let my mind wander where it will. 1 .
Hiking keeps your brain sharper than many other forms of exercise. As a professional writer, although I am busy with my work, I often spare some time to hike. 2 .
Hiking can increase our creativity. I’m sure I’m not alone in finding that walks in nature let your mind wander freely in creative directions. 3 . Sometimes, ideas relevant to music build up from unconscious places when I’m not deliberately thinking.
4 . Exercise in general can be a good way to decrease stress. But what sets hiking apart from other forms of exercise is that hiking can happen almost anywhere and give you the happiness that you can take from nature.
Hiking helps strengthen a positive relationship with the natural world. Besides being good for us, hiking may also help the world around us. After all, if we stick to walking and covering longer distances, we could use cars less and reduce our carbon footprint. 5 . For example, it increases our connection to nature. As one study suggests, when we have a personal connection to nature, we are more likely to want to protect it. That means experiences in nature — like hiking — can be mutually(相互地)beneficial, helping people and the earth.
So, grab a water bottle,a backpack...and head out on the trail. You won’t be sorry you did that.
 A. Hiking helps to keep you calm and happy

[2024四川巴中统考]When the film EverythingEverywhereAllatOnce was released, it felt like its highly positive responses came out of nowhere. Reviews were posted, cinema screenings were sold out, and people were weeping online simply because it was that good. It became the Internet’s new favorite film swiftly. Below is something you need to know about this film.
Evelyn Wang (starring Michelle Yeoh) is a Chinese American woman who is between running her laundry business and dealing with the breakdown of her relationship with her marriage and her daughter. However, this is not just a film about the bonds of family; instead, Wang discovers a technology that can make her have access to alternate realities.
In a word, it’s a story about an aging Chinese immigrant caught up in a crazy adventure, where she alone can save the world by exploring other universes. Besides, there’s this deep family element that exists within the multiverse (多元宇宙) story. It’s also a story about the nature of existence and what it means to age.
"Evelyn deserves her own voice," Yeoh says."She’s a very ordinary housewife, an immigrant mother who’s trying her very best to survive." Despite the fact that Evelyn’s experience is not actually (or at least not entirely) Yeoh’s experience, there’s one point where they do intersect (相交). In many ways, both have been greatly underestimated. Evelyn has been underestimated by everyone around her, and even herself who sees only ordinariness in her identity as a middle-aged woman. Yeoh has been underestimated by the movie industry."I have not been the first lead in a movie in Hollywood for a long, long time," Yeoh says. The opportunity to take a leading role written for her felt like recognition: as a nearly 60-year-old Asian actress, she can still carry a film entirely on her own.

一、阅读理解

The email request came in to Ekiben in Baltimore late on a Thursday afternoon. Brandon Jones, who sent the email, didn’t actually want the tempura broccoli dish itself. He was writing on behalf of his mother-in-law, who loves the dish so much. She is in the final stages of lung cancer at her home in Vermont. Brandon was hoping to get the recipe to make it for her.
Steve Chu, one of the restaurant’s co-owners, read the email and quickly replied. "Thanks for reaching out," he wrote. "We’d like to meet you and make it fresh for you."
"I emailed back, saying,‘You do know this is Vermont we’re talking about, right? It’s a six-hour drive.’" says Brandon. "But Chu responded,‘No problem. Tell us the time and location, and we’ll be there.’"
"She always tells us,‘When I’m on my deathbed, I want to have that broccoli,’" recalls Brandon’s wife, Rina. "In fact, when I was packing on Friday to drive up to Vermont from home, I called to see if she wanted anything and she jokingly said,‘Tempura broccoli!’"
A day after receiving Brandon’s email, Chu loaded his truck with everything they needed and headed for Vermont with his business partner and an employee. They stayed overnight in a hotel and drove the next day to the place where Rina’s mother lives. Once Chu and his team arrived, they got to work. In addition to the broccoli dish, they made tofu with peanut sauce and some steamed rice. After neatly boxing everything up, they knocked on their customer’s door.
Rina said her mother recognized Chu when she opened the door. "She kept saying,‘I don’t understand. You drove all the way up here to cook for me?’ She was so happy and touched," Rina says.
The Joneses invited Chu to join them for dinner, but he refused. And Chu also wouldn’t accept any money from the family.
"She’s a lovely old lady. She has showered us with love and praise at our restaurant for years. It was an honor to help fulfill the family’s wishes," Chu says. "There was a lot of good, positive energy in doing this."

[环境保护/2024广东湛江10月联考]Raising livestock (牲畜) is a big part of the carbon emission from agriculture. But it is hard to change people’s habits and get them to give up their hamburgers, especially since more than one-third of Americans eat fast food every day. We previously called for carbon labels on everything from buildings to burgers. Now, a new study from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health found that labels on fast food affected people’s choices.
The study said shifting current dietary patterns to more sustainable diets with less red meat could reduce food-related greenhouse gas emissions by 55% and would have health benefits.
The 5,000 participants in the study were shown fake menus. One group got menus with high-climate impact labels on red meat items and another had low-climate impact labels on fish or plant-based burgers. Both menus were effective in reducing the orders for red meat. But interestingly, the high-impact labels were far more effective, with 23% of the participants choosing a more environmentally sustainable selection, while menus listing low-impact choices encouraged only 10% of the participants to change.
"We found that labeling red meat items with high-climate impact labels was more effective in increasing sustainable selections than labeling non-red meat items with low-climate impact labels," wrote the authors of the study.
Lead author, Julia Wolfson, said, "These results suggest that menu labeling, particularly labels warning that an item has high-climate impact, can be an effective strategy for encouraging more sustainable food choices in a fast food setting."
The study points out negative labels might be unpopular: "It is unlikely that the industry would voluntarily adopt a negative label approach; such an approach needs to be carried out via law. However, high-climate impact labels may easily be adopted in settings like universities and hospitals."
They have a point: This label is aggressively negative, more like a cigarette warning than a food label. In the study, the authors note that future research should test more label designs using qualitative and quantitative research on how people understand different climate impact labels.

A. It will be banned by law.

Chris Greenbank, 36, a stonemason(石匠) from Stockport, Greater Manchester, even managed to complete a half marathon carrying the youngster in a special hiking carrier.
The single father, who suffered from anxiety in the past, has been raising money for mental health support group Project 23. The group, which helps people with anxiety and mental health problems, was set up by Chris’s friend Mark Sproston.
