The first essay I wrote for my history of English class was perfect, at least from my perspective. I had worked on it constantly and couldn’t wait to get my grade back. I handed it in with pride.
Two weeks later, I received my grade: a D. The pages were covered in red writing, pointing out errors. There must have been a mistake.
University started later for me than most. The opportunity wasn’t available when I was younger — too many kids in our family and too little money. But I never stopped wondering what university would have been like. I was in my 40s when I sent in my application and as a part-time student, I will be in my 60s before I’m finished. That’s my goal.
What’s it like to be the old guy in a class full of 20-year-olds It’s strange. They pretty much ignored me, and I ignored them. They also ignored each other. However, after we had more group work together, people started to communicate. Although I was an English major, some of my favorite classes were unrelated electives. Courses in art history and Greek and Roman history were fascinating. I was eager to do well.
I arranged a meeting to discuss my essay grade and arrived 10 minutes early to meet the teacher’s assistant. I was ready to argue for the brilliance of my paper. However, she quickly explained to me that the paper failed to make a strong argument. The mark remained.
While I kept studying and kept learning, I learned to love two dozen writers I had never heard of before and explored types of literature I had never examined. Eventually, I learned how to write an essay in proper academic prose.
University is different when you are a senior, part-time student. If you are there to establish a career or because your parents force you to go, there are other pressures. For me, it’s just learning. Whether I’m learning remotely or in person, it makes the world a bigger, richer place.
4. How did the writer feel after receiving the grade of his first essay
A. Hopeless. B. Pleased. C. Excited. D. Surprised.
5. Why did the writer start university later than others
A. His application was refused.
B. His teacher disliked his essay.
C. His health did not meet the standard.
D. His family was not rich enough.
6. What helped the writer in writing a proper academic essay
A. Strong curiosity. B. Constant efforts.
C. Great pressure. D. Remarkable creativity.
7. Which would be the best title for the passage
A. Practice Makes Perfect.
B. Not All That Shines Is Gold.
C. Where There Is A Will, There Is A Way.
D. Action Speaks Louder Than Words.
D 5. D 6. B 7. C

根据第三段的“University started later for me than most. The opportunity wasn’t available when I was younger — too many kids in our family and too little money.(我上大学比大多数人都晚。在我年轻的时候,没有这样的机会——家里孩子太多,钱太少)”可知,作者上大学比其他人晚是因为他的家庭不够富裕。故选D。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段的“While I kept studying and kept learning, I learned to love two dozen writers I had never heard of before and explored types of literature I had never examined. Eventually, I learned how to write an essay in proper academic prose.(在我不断学习的过程中,我学会欣赏二十几位我从未听说过的作家,并探索了我从未研究过的文学类型。最终,我学会了如何用正确的学术散文写一篇文章)”可知,不断的努力帮助作者写出一篇合适的学术论文。故选B。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是倒数第二段的“While I kept studying and kept learning, I learned to love two dozen writers I had never heard of before and explored types of literature I had never examined. Eventually, I learned how to write an essay in proper academic prose.(在我不断学习的过程中,我学会欣赏二十几位我从未听说过的作家,并探索了我从未研究过的文学类型。最终,我学会了如何用正确的学术散文写一篇文章)”可知,本文主要讲的是作者在40多岁的时候申请成为一名兼职学生,之后不断努力学习,终于能够写出一篇合适的学术论文的故事,说明了“有志者事竟成”这个道理,因此最好的题目是C选项“Where There Is A Will, There Is A Way(有志者事竟成)”,故选C。

It’s hard to turn down hamburgers, french fries, potato chips and all of the other junk food that seem to call out to us. However, eating too much junk food can harm your body, particularly if you’re a teenager.
“Junk food shapes teenager’s brains in ways that damage their ability to think, learn and remember. It can also make it harder to control bad behaviors,” said Amy Reichelt, a brain and nutrition specialist at Western University, Canada. “It may even up a teen’s possibility of depression and anxiety.”
Reichelt and two other researchers reviewed more than 100 studies, including their own, about how poor food choices can impact teen’s brains. They found teens are more sensitive (敏感的) than any other age group to processed foods with a lot of fat and sugar as their brains are not yet fully formed.
Teenagers’ brains are still developing the ability to assess bad possibilities and control actions. The prefrontal cortex is the part of the brain that tells us we shouldn’t eat chips all the time and helps us resist ( 抵 制 ) that urge. However, this region is the last to mature (成熟) — it doesn’t fully develop until we are in our early 20s.
So, what’s the best way to say no to junk food Researchers suggest exercise. When we exercise, the brain’s reward system becomes less sensitive to food reminder. Exercise also causes the body to make a protein that helps brain cells grow and strengthens connections between the prefrontal cortex and other brain regions. The prefrontal cortex thus can work better to help us make wise decisions and control our impulses.
8. According to the text, junk food does the greatest harm to .
A. Preschoolers B. Teenagers C. The middle-aged D. The elderly
9. What does the underlined word “It” in paragraph 2 refer to
A. Junk food. B. The brain. C. The research. D. The ability.
10. What can be inferred from the text
A. Processed foods shouldn’t be allowed to produce.
B. Teenagers don’t understand the harm of junk food.
C. The prefrontal cortex can help us make wise decisions.
D. The prefrontal cortex develops fully in our late 20s.
11. What’s the main idea of the last paragraph
A. Where do our impulses come from
B. Why should we fight against junk food
C. What is the best way to strengthen our body
D. How does exercise work against junk food
B 9. A 10. C 11. D
根据第一段最后一句“However, eating too much junk food can harm your body, particularly if you’re a teenager.(然而,吃太多的垃圾食品会伤害你的身体,特别是如果你是一个青少年。)”
根据第二段第一句中的“Junk food shapes teenager’s brains in ways that damage their ability to think, learn and remember.(垃圾食品会影响青少年的大脑,损害他们思考、学习和记忆的能力。)” 故选A。
根据最后一段最后一句“The prefrontal cortex thus can work better to help us make wise decisions and control our impulses.(因此,前额皮质可以更好地帮助我们做出明智的决定,控制我们的冲动。)”
根据最后一段前三句“So, what’s the best way to say no to junk food Researchers suggest exercise. When we exercise, the brain’s reward system becomes less sensitive to food reminder.(那么,对垃圾食品说不的最好方法是什么呢?研究人员建议锻炼。当我们锻炼时,大脑的奖励系统对食物提醒变得不那么敏感。)”可知,最后一段主要关于运动如何对抗垃圾食品。故选D。

While video games used to be considered harmful to young people, various studies have also proved the positive effects of computer games, especially action video games.
Angela Pasqualotto from the University of Trento and her team have now tested whether such video games can help primary school children learn to read. They’ve developed such a computer game called Skies of Manawak.
“Reading involves many important skills, including knowing how to move our eyes on the page or how to use our working memory to connect words into a meaningful sentence,” explains Pasqualotto. “It’s known that action video games improve these still, such as vision, general attention, working memory and cognitive (认知的) flexibility.”
For their study, the researchers tested 150 school children between the ages of eight and twelve. Half of them played the game Skies of Manawak two hours a week for six weeks. The other half, the control group, received the educational game Scratch, which is intended to teach children the basics of programming. Both games are basically to train the executive (执行的) functions of the brain.
“We started by examining the children’s ability to read words, non-words and paragraphs and their attention control,” explains Pasqualotto. “After six weeks, these skills were tested again.”
“We found a seven-fold improvement in attention control in the children who played our action video game compared to the control group,” said Pasqualotto. The team also saw significant improvements in reading speed and accuracy among Skies of Manawak players—there were no improvements in the kids who played Scratch. It’s also worth mentioning that the children’s reading skills have improved, although the game itself doesn’t contain any reading exercises.
“For the study, we also carried out three further evaluation tests six, twelve and eighteen months after the training. Each time, the trained children performed better than the control group,” adds Pasqualotto.
Of course, while the study suggests some benefit in action video games, it does not mean that one must do nothing else.
12. What did the 150 school children do in the study
A. They received training on programming. B. They finished some reading ability tests.
C They created video games on their own. D. They played games with reading exercises.
13. What does the further evaluation suggest about Skies of Manawak
A. Its influence on reading skills is not temporary. B. The study results about it seem to be untrustworthy.
C. Reading ability can’t be improved with its assistance. D. Kids need consistent reading training after playing it.
14. What is the author’s opinion on action video games
A. They have nothing to do with reading. B. People shouldn’t get addicted to them.
C School kids are supposed to avoid them. D. They should be replaced with Scratch.
15. Which of the following can serve as the best title for the text
A. Video Games Prove Harmless to Young People at School
B. Time for Children to Play Video Games Should Be Limited
C. Children Easily Fall in Love With Reading in a Video Game
D. Playing Action Video Games Improves Kids’ Reading Skills
B 13. A 14. B 15. D

由文章第七段“Each time, the trained children performed better than the control group.( 每一次,训练过的孩子都比对照组表现得更好。)” 故选A项。
根据最后一段“... while the study suggests some benefit in action video games, it does not mean that one must do nothing else. (当然,虽然这项研究表明动作类电子游戏有一些好处,但这并不意味着人们就可以什么都不做。)” 可推断,作者认为玩动作类电子游戏虽然有益处,但是不能沉迷其中。故选B项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“While video games used to be considered harmful to young people, various studies have also proved the positive effects of computer games, especially action video games.”(虽然电子游戏曾经被认为对年轻人有害,但各种研究也证明了电子游戏的积极影响,尤其是动作电子游戏。)

In the field of education technology, some apps might be getting too smart. There are more and more apps providing help for students.
PhotoMath
The new, seemingly magic app allows users to take pictures of a math problem, and then receive a step-by-step solution. It is now the number one free app on the App Store. Users post a picture or type their homework questions onto online forum (论坛), and those who answer the questions can win e-coins that can be used to buy devices like laptops. The app has logged 5 million downloads, much to the concern of many parents who argue that the students spend less time thinking about challenging problems.

B Not All That Shines Is Gold.
C. Where There Is A Will, There Is A Way.
D. Action Speaks Louder Than Words.

8. According to the text junk food does the greatest harm to .
A. Preschoolers B. Teenagers C. The middle-aged D. The elderly
9. What does the underlined word “It” in paragraph 2 refer to
A. Junk food. B. The brain. C. The research. D. The ability.
10. What can be inferred from the text
A. Processed foods shouldn’t be allowed to produce.
B. Teenagers don’t understand the harm of junk food.
C. The prefrontal cortex can help us make wise decisions.
D. The prefrontal cortex develops fully in our late 20s.
11. What’s the main idea of the last paragraph
A. Where do our impulses come from
B. Why should we fight against junk food
C. What is the best way to strengthen our body
D. How does exercise work against junk food
D
C. They created video games on their own. D. They played games with reading exercises.
13 What does the further evaluation suggest about Skies of Manawak
C. School kids are supposed to avoid them.

The science teacher, Mr. Moose, decided that the school would have a paper airplane contest (比赛). Each student would design a paper airplane. And then they would take turns throwing their airplanes. The student whose airplane flew the farthest would win.
When Mr. Moose announced the paper airplane contest, all the students were very excited. Paul, who was on the wrestling (摔跤) team, said to other students. “I am the strongest. And I will be able to throw my airplane the farthest.”
However, another student, Brian, was thinking how he could win. He did not play any sports and was not very strong. But he loved airplanes and really wanted to win the contest.
Brian knew what he had to do. He went to the store and bought a big pile of paper. When he got home, he took the paper into the backyard. He took a piece of paper and folded (折叠) an airplane. It didn’t go very far, so Brian took another piece and folded another airplane and threw it. This airplane went a little farther. Brian kept folding different kinds of airplanes and throwing them. Some went very far and some did not. Finally, when Brian had used all the paper, he walked up to the airplane that had flown the farthest and picked it up.
