The Cost of Traveling to Antarctica
“Why do you want to travel to Antarctica Isn’t it very cold and very far away ”
I was asked these same questions over and over again when I told my friends about my plan to travel to the southernmost continent. To be honest, I, l 11 many other travelers, just wanted to cross this pure-white wonderland off my bucket list (人生愿望清单). The trip, however, turned out to be a great lesson about the Antarctic environment. On my way back, I couldn’t help asking myself, “How have I affected the Antarctic environment Should I have even traveled to the continent ” Any type of travel comes with an environmental cost. My guide told me that of all means of transport, ships had some of the largest carbon footprints. That means they produce lots of greenhouse gases. In addition, the noise of ships p 12 through the ocean can cause serious harm to sea life.
When we travel from one place to another, we spread seeds a 13 bacteria (细菌) through our clothing, bodies and luggage. For Antarctica, these non-native seeds and bacteria can be very damaging. Tour operators try to prevent this problem by providing travelers with special boots. Travelers must wear them whenever they leave their ships. Their outerwear must also be cleaned b 14 it can be worn for landing. However, when they get hot while hiking, travelers may take off their outerwear and the clothes they wear underneath are not usually required to be cleaned.
The increase in tourism in Antarctica may also bring about some unknown risks. For example, since there is no native human population in Antarctica, the l 15 animals are not used to sharing their homes with us. We may not be able to n 16 any problems now, but when we begin to see changes, it may already be too late.
It was truly wonderful to see the b 17 of Antarctica with my own eyes. However, my trip did harm the Antarctic environment and wildlife. Before you decide to land on the continent, please think twice about the true “cost” of your trip.

六、阅读理解
Time to let go!
When I asked my mum and dad if I could go to Kavos with some of my friends for a week, the last thing I thought they would say was “yes”. “There is nothing to discuss,” my dad barked, “Of course you can’t. My girl, you are too young to travel without the presence (在场) of an adult. It’s completely out of question.” My mum just went on and on about all of the possible dangers. So I tried to change their minds. I told them,“If you were worried about the possibility of me falling off a wall and dying in Kavos, then why weren’t you also worried about the possibility of the same thing happening to me here in London ”.
Finally, they agreed—unwillingly. My mum took me to the airport. I had to fly because my friends had flown out the day before. I arrived at the hotel and met my friends at 6 a. m., after a long night of flying.
After having left my luggage in my room, I explored the attractions with my friends. Everyone spoke English and everywhere looked like a cheap American film set. It was just what we all needed after a long year of busy study.
I promised my parents I wouldn’t go out every night. But once you’re there, it just can’t be helped. Every one of us wanted to make the most of our week of freedom. To be honest, I think we did get a bit too crazy.
I still wonder if my parents were happy with their decision. But I did have a wonderful holiday. I think the experience should make my parents realize that it is time for them to let go. I got home safely at last. So did my friends. Now I’m talking with my mum about a similar journey next year. She is speechless for a moment, then she cries, “My alarm bells (警钟) have already started ringing.”

Guangfulin Relics Park (广富林遗址公园) is about four kilometers away from Sheshan Hill. It’s a window into the history of Shanghai.
In 1958, while digging a new waterway, some local farmers found several pieces of ancient pottery (陶器). In 1961, archaeologists (考古学家) began a serious study there. They discovered a large number of pottery items, spinning wheels, dishes and knives. They also discovered two tombs (坟墓). These discoveries proved that there is a 4,000-year-old culture here. The relics park was built right on this historical place.
The park includes a farmland protection area, a cultural area and a Chinese-style water town. Rice, corn, sunflowers, pears and peaches are grown in the farmland protection area. The water town provides a perfect place for tourists to stay the night and have a rest.
The cultural area is the most important part of the park. It is made up of ten museums and memorial halls. The most popular one is the Guangfulin Cultural Museum. It’s built underwater with its roofs (屋顶) on the surface.
