I was 6 years old when my father told me we were leaving the Big Apple Circus. Until that point, I had spent most of my life on the circus lot, playing with the other circus kids. The circus, by its nature, is one that has a loose structure. So the early years after my leaving the circus to sit in a classroom all day felt more like a prison.
But years later, I found areas that interested me. I took the skills I had learned from being onstage and applied them to broadcasting. And so when Boston's news station WBUR offered me a job out of college, I jumped at the chance. Along the way, I found I really enjoyed the work. I became WBUR's news reporter. The flexibility and adaptability I'd learned in the circus as a child helped me do my job naturally and easily in a stressful situation----whether it was a destructive tornado outside Boston, or the Boston Marathon bombings of 2013.
But then a serious infectious disease appeared. Suddenly, for the first time in my adult life, I went for a year without doing any shows. But it became clear to me that performing was what I truly wanted. For me, the circus symbolizes who I am. And stages have always been where I've felt the most free. Some people get nervous before they go on stage, but by assuming (扮演) the character of Jacques ze Whipper and drawing a stupid moustache on my face, all my social anxiety disappears.
Circus performances go beyond age, socioeconomic status( 地位 ), and even language. It's the type of performance where you can go anywhere in the world to entertain anyone----help anyone forget their troubles for5,10,and even 30 minutes. And most importantly, for me, it means coming home.
24.How did the author feel in the early years of school
A. Curious. B. Unfree C. Loose. D. Impatient.
25.What do we know about the author's job at WBUR
A. He did it for his father. B. He did it against his will.
C. He risked his neck doing it. D. He took to it like a duck to water.
26.What does the circus probably mean to the author
A.A means of living. B.A chance to go anywhere.
C.A part of his identity. D.A way to forget his troubles.
27.Why does the author write the text
A. To express his love for circus performances.
B. To stress the value of performing.
C. To share his personal experiences in a circus.
D. To discuss the problem of choosing a job.

There are well-documented mental health benefits to pet ownership, as much research has shown. Indeed, we know there are some physical benefits as well, as dog owners tend to have more active lifestyles. Yet when it comes to conditions like allergies (过敏), we tend to think of pet ownership as exacerbating, not alleviating them.
Hence, a recent study published in the journal PLOS One might come as a surprise. The study, published Wednesday, found that children raised with cats and dogs early in life had a 13 to 16 % lower risk of developing all food allergies than those who did not own pets.
The researchers engaged in a detailed survey, studying 65,000 children. They found that children who were exposed to dogs either during fetal (胎儿) development, or up to the age of 3 years old were less likely to have nut, milk and egg allergies.
This wasn't true for other pets that weren't cats and dogs. Indeed, the same research found that children exposed to hamsters during this same period had an increased risk of nut allergies. Yet children who were exposed to cats during their early years were likewise less likely to develop specific allergies — namely, allergies to wheat, soybean and egg.
While the study is not the final word on the issue — the researchers note “further studies using oral food challenges are required to more accurately assess the incident of food allergies” — it reinforces preexisting research on the seemingly funny ways that cats influence human development.
In addition to adding to the growing body of scientific literature about pets and human health, the PLOS One also reinforces earlier research about the role of the environment in developing allergies. The research repeatedly found that exposure to farmyard dirt, dust and the various fine hairs that fly off animals helps children in their breathing system development.
28. What does the underlined word "exaccrbating" in paragraph 1 best mean
A. Worsening. B. Damaging.
C. Improving. D. Benefiting.
29. What agrees with the result of the recent research
A. Kids over 3 will have more food allergies.
B. Hamsters cause the most allergies to children.
C. All pet ownership will not reduce food allergies.
D. Cat owners are less likely to be allergic than dog owners.
30. What is the author’s attitude to the PLOS One study
A. Satisfied. B. Objective.
C. Doubtful. D. Unconcerned.
31. What is a best title for the text
A. Benefits brought by raising animals.
B. Pet ownership making kids healthier.
C. Researches on different food allergies.
D. Dogs and cats reducing kids' allergies.
D
In a groundbreaking effort, scientists at the University of Rochester have successfully transferred a longevity gene from naked mole rats(裸盼鼠)to mice, leading to enhanced health and a longer lifespan for the mice.
Unlike many other species, the rats do not often develop diseases —including cancer—as they age. Vera Gorbunova, the Doris Johns Cherry Professor of bi ology and medicine at Rochester, along with Andrei Seluanov, a professor of biology, and their colleagues have devoted decades of research to understanding the unique mechanisms(机制)that the naked mole rats use to protect themselves against aging and diseases. The researchers discovered that HMW-HA is one mechanism responsible for the rats’ unusual resistance to pared to mice and humans, naked mole rats have about ten times more HMW-HA in their bodies. When the researchers removed HMW-HA from the rat cells, the cells were more likely to form tumors(肿瘤).
“Our study provides a proof of principle that unique longevity mechanisms that evolved in long-lived mammals can be exported to improve the lifespans of other mammals,” says Gorbunova. As they successfully transferred a gene responsible for making HMW-HA from a naked mole rat to mice, leading to improved health and an approximate 4.4 percent increase in the lifespan for the mice, the Rochester researchers have opened exciting possibilities for unlocking the secrets of aging and extending human lifespan. “It took us 10 years from the discovery of HMW-HA in the naked mole rat to showing that HMW-HA improves health in mice,” Gorbunova says. “Our next goal is to transfer this benefit to humans.”
They believe they can accomplish this through two routes: either by slowing down the degradation(衰退)of HMW-HA or by enhancing HMW-HA synthesis(合成). “We hope that our findings will provide the first, but not the last, example of how longevity adaptations from a long-lived species can be adapted to benefit human longevity and health.” Seluanov says.
32. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about
A. The beneficial effects of HMW-HA on humans.
B. The process of transferring genes producing HMW-HA.
C. The comparison between mice and humans in longevity.
D. The discovery of a unique mechanism for cancer resistance.
33. What can we learn about the researchers
A. They have unlocked the secrets of human longevity.
B. They plan to introduce longevity genes into humans.
C. They have spent 10 years trying to discover HMW-HA.
D. They believe that the longevity genes can be exported to any mammals.
34. What does Seluanov think of the prospect of extending human lifespan
A. Hopeful. B. Worrying. C. Doubtful. D. Uncertain.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. Promise Shown in Control of Human Genes
B. Scientists Successfully Transfer Longevity Gene
C. Achievement Made in Extending Human Lifespan
D. New Breakthrough Paves the Way for Curing Cancer

Mobile phones will disturb them, scientific research shows. 38 ”
“The ban is the result of an agreement between the ministry, schools, and related organizations. Schools can find their own way to organize the ban," Dijkgraaf added, 39 ”
A similar ban was introduced in France in 2018 for primary and middle schools to improve focus and prevent online violence.40 “In most cases, mobile phones are already banned for the majority of the school day,” said the UK government.

Carter enjoyed riding the school bus home. The ride home gave him some time to relax after a busy day of fifth grade. He usually sat alone and enjoyed that too. With four siblings (兄妹) he didn’t get much time alone. Sometimes he sat with his younger brother, Jackson, but Jackson was sick at home today.
The bus stopped and the tallest boy in his class, Dexter, stepped off followed by his younger brother, Billy. As the bus pulled away, Carter looked back over his shoulder to watch the boys. Dexter was yelling and waving his hands at his little brother. Billy said something Carter could not hear. Dexter yelled, gave his younger brother a hard shove and knocked him to the ground. Billy was on the ground wiping at his eyes, but Dexter walked away.
Carter turned in his seat, feeling disgusted. He hated seeing little kids get picked on (欺负). The sight of Billy on the ground crying was burned into his memory. He tried to think of something else.
He thought of the model car he was working on at home, a 1967 Corvette. He started building it over a week ago and just finished putting it together last night. Tonight, as soon as he finished his homework, he could start painting the car. That was his favorite part. He already had the perfect color of blue picked out.
He hurried off the bus, ran through his yard, and breezed through the kitchen with a quick hello to his mom. She was making spaghetti, which smelled delicious. He ran up the stairs two at a time and rushed into his room.
“Surprise!” his brother Jackson said, throwing his arms into the air.
“What are you doing in my room I thought you were sick!”
“I feel better!”
“What’s on your face Are you bleeding ”
“No! I’m not bleeding.” Jackson wiped at his face. “It’s probably just paint. Look! Look what I did!” He pointed at the desk in the corner of Carter’ s room.

No matter how serious he looks and how tough he appears to get along with, my father deserves to be my idol.
There is always a considerate and warm-hearted person behind his seemingly unapproachable face. What makes me admire for him is his positive attitude, sense of responsibility, and his wide range of knowledge. When I was in junior, I was rebellious and I turned a deaf ear to any suggestion from him. He never lost his temper with me even once. All he tried was to communicate with me equally, and exchange his thoughts with me patiently, which did move me eventually. Moreover, thanks to his instructive tutorial, I laid a solid foundation for my study.
It was his patience and wide horizon that enlightened my life at an early age with knowledge. With my father’s love and company, I feel secure and happy. That’s why I admire him from the bottom of my heart.
Possible version:
Carter looked down at his desk in horror His Corvette! What an awful dull shade of red! “Why did you do that ” Carter yelled loudly.“I just wanted to surprise you!” Jackson pouted his lips and grinned at me proudly.“Isn't it cool " he continued. Color was rising on Carter's face. He bit his lips tightly and held his fist high. Astonished at Carter's extreme anger, Jackson was frozen to the spot, innocent tears rolling down.“I thought you would like it...!’ he drooped his head and murmured.
Carter took a deep breath and then unfolded his fist. Jackson's sad and hopeless expression is somewhat familiar to him. The sight of Billy's getting picked on was burned into his memory again.“Of course it's cool!’ Carter took a breath of relief and walked towards the table where the car was still drying. He stroked Jackson on the clown-like face and comforted him ,“A sweet surprise!” Suddenly, a big and bright smile spread across Jackson's little face.
One possible version:

Jackson kept saying something.but so angry was Carter that he couldn't even hear a word.“Do you like it I tried so hard. Look!” asked Jackson. Red paint was smeared across his face, forehead, even hair. Looking at Jackson, Carter couldn't help imagining his little brother spending the whole day carefully painting the car.
Carter took a deep breath and then unfolded his fist. Picturing the scene that Billy sit on the ground wiping at his eyes as his big brother.Dexter walked away, Carter stepped toward the table where the car was still drying. Carter wasn't sure what to say. He didn't want to lie but he didn't want to hurt his brother's feelings either. Jackson was only trying to surprise him. He could see that now.“Do you Do you like it ’ Jackson insisted.“Every time I look at this car, I'm going to think of you,” Carter responded, a smile stretching across his face. And that was the truth. “Now, we'd better get that paint off your face before dinner.”
