When Schauna Austin was 20 years old, she lost her husband in a car crash.Unable to raise a baby alone, she made a difficult decision during pregnancy-to place her baby for adoption. She gave birth to a child she named Riley, and held him for 72 hours straight.“It was perfect,” Austin said, holding her new baby.“I knew I would have him for a short time, so I made every minute count.I didn’t sleep for three days until the time came to let him go.”
Her Riley became another family’s Steven.Like most closed adoptions, a firewall went up between Austin
and Steven’s new parents一no communication whatsoever. But that only lasted about a week.Adoptive mother Jennifer Schoebinger and her husband, Chris Schoebinger, said they had no interest in excluding the birth mother.“You know, you can’t have too many people loving you, right Why couldn’t he be both of ours ” Chris Schoebinger said.
So, year after year, they sent Austin piles of pictures and bound books detailing Steven’s every major and minor milestones. The Schoebingers said they did this so that when Austin and their son were ready, they could pick up right where they left off.The two reunited when Steven was 7 years old.Austin taught him how to fish, and they have kept in contact ever since.Austin felt blessed beyond words, and Steven felt he got the best of both worlds.
Steven is now 26, married, and with a baby boy of his own.Much to the delight of Austin, he named the child Riley.“I think the lesson we learned is that sometimes we create barriers where barriers don’t need to be.And when we pull down those barriers, we really find love on the other side,” Chris Schorbinger said.

Imagine you’re out for an evening stroll (闲逛) in a foreign city, looking to find a restaurant for dinner. You will look for the busiest restaurant with the most diners because its popularity is bound to reflect on the quality of food and service. But is this true
In tourist areas, which lack regular, local customers, the number of diners is unlikely to hold information about the quality of the meal.In this case, following the example of others could have led to a sub-optimal (次佳的) dinner choice in an overcrowded restaurant.
Spontaneously (不由自主地) copying other people’s thoughts or choices or simply going with the crowd is often referred to as “Herd behaviors”.It is a frequent occurrence among humans as well as many other animals, a common example being sheep.
Herding can appear to make a lot of sense.Average judgements of large groups of people often outperform individual choices.Furthermore, following the crowd appears to offer protection and comfort一after all, there’s “safety in numbers” —while helping to maintain a favourable reputation. Finally, following the herd reduces the effort needed to make a personal or unique decision.
Herd behaviors, while common and easy to explain, can have many harmful effects.Blindly following the herd can have grave consequences when trying to escape from danger. As seen in examples during earthquakes, herding may result in the entire crowd rushing for the same door, even if other exits are available. This unavoidably affects evacuation (撤退) efforts and may result in avoidable injuries or even deaths.
Psychology research suggests that it’s surprisingly difficult to resist the influences of the herd.In an experiment involving financial decision making, researchers found that warning messages about the potential errors of the crowd were surprisingly ineffective in helping customers make better choices. It appears there is no quick and easy fix.Instead, it is advisable to involve individuals adopting more critical approaches towards peers’ opinion, and questioning others’ behaviors as opposed to blindly following them.
28.What does the author want to tell us by the restaurant example
A.Undesirable outcomes of herding.
B.Wise dinner choices of most customers.
C.Practical ways of avoiding herding.
D.Poor conditions of popular dining places.
29.What does paragraph 4 mainly tell us about herding
A.Its application. B.Its disadvantages.
C.Its definition. D.Its benefits.
30.What does the author suggest readers do in the last paragraph
A.Send warning messages. B.Follow peers’ opinions.
C.Stop behaving critically. D.Have our own judgments.
31.Which is the best title for the text
A.Why can’t you find the reasons for herding
B.Why shouldn’t you follow the crowd blindly
C.When should you avoid influences of herding
D.How can you discover wisdom of crowds

On January 22, a massive iceberg broke off from Antarctica’s(南极洲的) Brunt Ice Shelf.Scientists say the iceberg was expected to break off and the event isn’t connected to climate change. But the size of the iceberg is hard to imagine. This iceberg covers an area of about 600 square miles. That’s about twice the size of New York City.
Antarctica is covered with a layer of ice and snow that’s roughly 1.2 miles thick. As snowfalls, it piles up in the center of Antarctica in a huge layer of ice.Overtime, the weight of this ice and snow creates slowly moving rivers of ice called glaciers, which push out toward the sea.
When the glaciers reach the sea, they slowly push out beyond the edge of the land, forming huge “ice shelves”.These are massive sections of ice that spread out over the sea, floating on the water below. From time to time, the edges of the ice shelves break off. This is a natural process, called “calving(冰裂作用)”.Though calving events are a normal part of the ice shelf in Antarctica, one expert describes huge calving events like this are “quite rare and exciting”.
This is the second time in two years that a huge iceberg has calved from the Brunt Ice Shelf.Though this calving event had nothing to do with the climate crisis, the world’s rising temperatures are definitely affecting Antarctica’s sea ice.
Unlike an ice shelf, sea ice isn’t attached to Antarctica’s land. It’s a layer of ice that floats on the surface of the sea.The sea ice is there year-round.It grows larger in the cold winters, and smaller as it begins to melt in the summers. It’s now summer in Antarctica, and scientists say the sea ice is disappearing “unusually” rapidly.Last year, with temperatures warmer than normal, Antarctica set a record for the lowest amount of sea ice ever recorded.Scientists say Antarctica’s sea ice could set a new record low again this year.
32.What does the author intend to tell us in paragraph 2
A.How bad the temperature in Antarctic is.
B.How slowly-moving glaciers are formed.
C.Why so much snow and ice are in Antarctic.
D.What causes the glaciers to move slowly.
33.What does a specialist think of this calving event
A.Unpredictable. B.Incredible. C.Disastrous. D.Beneficial.
34.What can we infer about the Antarctica sea ice from the last paragraph
A.It is fixed on Antarctica’s land. B.No season can change its size.
C.Scientists worry about its size. D.It will return to normal next year.
35.What can be the best title of this text
A.It’s Urgent to Protect Antarctica
B.The Climate in Antarctica is Warmer
C.Massive lceberg Breaks From Antarctica
D.Antarctica’s Sea Ice Grows Larger in Summer

范文
Dear Peter,
I’m glad to hear from you.In your letter, you asked me about my future career plans.First of all, thank you for your concern.
My dream career is to be a life-saving doctor.I have had this ambition since I was a child, especially during the current epidemic, when I saw those medical workers leaving their families and children behind to go to the front line at the risk of personal safety, which inspired my determination to become a doctor.
In order to realize this dream, I must study hard and be admitted to the ideal medical university with excellent results.
Yours

Well, we’re off to a good start in the south this week, as most of the rain from the weekend has disappeared- just a few clouds and maybe some showers here on the east coast. They’ll all clear up by lunchtime, though.Over the next day or so, London and the area around Kent will be mostly dry through until Thursday. It’s not such good news for the north-west this week, I’m afraid: more wet weather, and not a lot of sunshine. Some of today’s showers will be heavy一and even thundery in Manchester.Leeds will escape the thunderstorms, with light rain only throughout the rest of the day and tonight.Elsewhere it becomes dry today, but with the sea fog towards Wales. In England, tomorrow morning will see a dry, bright start in most places. We might see one or two showers appearing as the week goes on, with the highest temperature at 30℃and the lowest 23℃.By the weekend, unfortunately, the dry weather will make way for mostly cloudy skies and rain. The rain will move from Scotland, down towards the north and reach the south coast by Saturday afternoon.Temperatures, at least, will stay mostly warm at around 21℃ for the weekend. It might feel like a nice change from the high twenties and early thirties we’ll see in the week.
