An owl (猫头鹰) named Flaco escaped New York’s Central Park Zoo last week after his cage was broken. This set off a bird-hunt of police officers and park rangers (护林员). Zoo officials worried that Flaco, who had been kept in his zoo cage for 13 years, may have lost the survival abilities he needed in the wild. They placed some of his favorite treats in the open air to attempt to trap him.
Flaco was not fooled. Instead, he was sighted flying over5th Avenue, and Central Park’s skating rink. A number of New Yorkers came into Central Park to try to catch a glimpse of Flaco, taking photos with excitement.
But this week, zoo officials announced they accepted that Flaco remained in Central Park because he had been seen bringing up bones and fur from the park’s community of rats. “He has been very successful at hunting and consuming lots of rats in the park.” zoo officials told the New York Post.“ And that’s amazing. He’s hunting on his own. He’s flying better. Flaceo really seems to be enjoying himself out there.”
There is a caution attached to this story of an owl who is making it on his own in the city that never sleeps. Owls are nocturnal. They go around searching for food at night. They sleep during the day, or try to, like lots of people who work the overnight shift. Yet some New Yorkers who don’t know proper bird-watching behavior reportedly see Flaco sleep in a tree during the day, and begin to shout at him. It interrupts his sleep. Flaco can’t try to say “shh, shh” with the traditional New York reply. After all, a bird can’t give someone the bird.
24. Why were zoo officials concerned about Flaco’s ability to survive
A. Because his favourite food was too little. B. Because he might be attacked by police.
C. Because his cage was severely damaged. D. Because he was kept in his cage for long.
25. What can we infer about Flaco from the third paragraph
A. He has adapted to the wild. B. He has found his previous home.
C. He still faces great challenges. D. He dislikes the rats in the park.
26. What does the underlined word “nocturnal” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Scary-looking. B. Shy and quiet.
C. Active at night. D. Badly-behaved.
27. Which word best describes the author’s attitude to the interruption to Flaco’s sleep
A. Cautious. B. Favorable. C. Unclear. D. Disapproving.

Workers continue to search the ruins of a large earthquake that hit Morocco Friday. Officials say almost 2,500 were killed in the quake, but that they expect that number will rise. The United Nations said the magnitude 6.8 earthquake affected 300,000 people. The damage was great because the starting point of the shaking was not far below the ground.
It is the strongest quake to hit the North African nation since 1900. And, it is reported to be the country’s deadliest since 1960, when at least 12,000 people were killed in and near the city of Agadir.
So far, Morocco has accepted support from four countries — Spain, Qatar, Great Britain and the United Arab Emirates. Other nations have offered help as well. Groups from the Moroccan army left Monday from Amizmiz to move into the small mountain villages. Heavy equipment was sent to clear the roads and both visitors and local people lined up to give blood.
Many people continued to sleep outside, fearing smaller earthquakes that often follow a major one. In the village of Imgdal, women and children gathered outside and some kept warm around an open fire on Monday morning.
On a road near the town of Adassil, near the epicenter (震中), one rescue worker, Ayman Koait, was trying to clear the rocks that were restraining trucks from getting by. He said other roads were in bad shape. “We’re trying to open them, too,” said Ayman Koait.
People said they dug through the ruins of their homes looking for relatives They also moved rocks and walls looking for important items.
Many of the homes are made from wood, rock and mud, which made them fall easily when the ground started shaking. One military (军方的) worker said “it is difficult to pull people out alive” because the walls turned into ruins and did not leave any space for air.
28. Why was the earthquake so serious
A. It happened close to the ground. B. It broke out at midnight.
C. Rescue was not timely enough. D. There was no proper protection.
29. Why did the local people keep staying outside after the earthquake
A. To receive supplies. B. To get ready for emergency meetings.
C. To avoid possible following ones. D. To keep themselves warm around open fires.
30. Why did the military worker think the rescue was almost hopeless
A. The villages are out of reach.
B. The roads were badly damaged.
C. The damaged areas are too close to the epicenter.
D The special houses made it hard for people to survive.
31. Where can we most probably read this passage
A. In a magazine. B. In a textbook. C. In a newspaper. D. In a dictionary.
D
The Mogao Grottoes were a center of Buddhist life and some of the world’s great cultures for hundreds of years. However, by the late Qing Dynasty they had been abandoned and nearly forgotten and many of the caves had become damaged by the elements. Around 1900, with the discovery of a library of thousands of ancient documents, the caves received new interest from Chinese and foreign researchers. Unfortunately, this resulted in tens of thousands of items from the caves being taken to foreign museums
In the 1940s, many researchers and artists visited the area to study traditional Chinese art. Copies of some of the artwork painted by respected artists such as Zhang Daqian and GuanShanyue helped people all over the country learn about Dunhuang. These artists were also inspired by the artwork they saw in the caves and it began to influence their painting styles. Others staved in the desert for much longer, Chang Shuhong stayed for the rest of his life — struggling to record the cultural treasures and protect them from the weather. As a result of their efforts the Dunhuang Academy was formed to protect and study the Mogao Grottoes.
In 1987, the Mogao Grottoes were named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. While the caves are open to the public, access is now limited in order to protect the artwork. However, the caves can be seen online in digital form so that people around the world can study and enjoy them.
Despite its remoteness, the Mogao Grottoes continue to draw visitors. And just as the sand and desert have survived largely unchanged through the centuries, this small art gallery in the desert has also survived largely unchanged providing an amazing look at a world long ago past.
32. When did the Mogao Grottoes regain the world’s attention
A. Hundreds of years ago.
B. In the late Qing Dynasty.
C. In the late eighties of the 20th century.
D. Around the beginning of the 20th century.
33. What is the author’s purpose in mentioning the artists in the 1940s
A. To learn about their works.
B. To show how hard they worked.
C. To compare their different styles.
D. To appreciate their contributions.
34. When people have no access to visiting the caves, .
A. they can do researches online
B. they can enjoy the digital versions
C. they can watch copies in art galleries
D. they can study them in foreign museums
35. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text
A. The Mogao Grottoes — Center of Buddhist Life
B. The Mogao Grottoes — Art Gallery in the Desert

W: Very good, sir. In this neighborhood, most of the houses have three bedrooms and two bathrooms. Apartments can range from 2-4 bedrooms and 2-3 bathrooms.
M: That’s interesting Why is there so much variety in apartments but not houses
W: All the houses in this neighborhood were built in the 1950s. Back then, they were all considering a particular family size, so they all have a similar style.
M: I see. Well, we are looking for something that is clean and, most importantly, in a safe area. Our budget is about $2500 a month.
W: Well, this neighborhood is very safe, sir, so you’ll have no problems. But $2500 won’t really be able to get you a house or the bigger apartments, I’m afraid.
M: As long as there are two bedrooms, we’ll be fine.
W: Well, I’m seeing about a few places that meet your needs. If you don’t mind waiting until tomorrow afternoon, I can take you to look at them.
M: Great!

【原文】Attention, parents! If your son or daughter signed up for soccer, then please listen up. As you know, there were five age groups planned for this year: 5-6, 7-9, 10-11, 12-13, and 14 and up. Unfortunately, we did not have enough kids signed up for the youngest group to make enough teams. I’m a parent of a soccer player myself, so I know how you must feel. The good news is that there are a few parents who are willing to volunteer to run soccer camps on the weekend in a more informal way for the youngest players. You would need to sign some paperwork and arrange your own transportation and appropriate clothing for each weekend, but at least your kids will have the opportunity to play soccer every week. For more information, please contact the soccer coach Steve Wollinsky at 425-7660. You can also add your name to a sign-up sheet that is posted on a wall next to the bathroom. If you do so, please make sure to leave your phone number and email address as well. Thanks for everything.

【答案】24. D 25. A 26. C 27. D
【解析】

After all, a bird can’t give someone the bird.(然而,据报道,一些不知道正确观鸟行为的纽约人白天看到弗拉克在树上睡觉,就开始对它大喊大叫。这打断了他的睡眠。弗莱克不能用纽约人传统的回答方式说“嘘,嘘”。毕竟,鸟不能给人竖中指)”可推知,作者的态度为不赞同。故选D。

People said they dug through the ruins of their homes looking for relatives. They also moved rocks and walls looking for important items.
D. The special houses made it hard for people to survive.
31. Where can we most probably read this passage
A. In a magazine. B. In a textbook. C. In a newspaper. D. In a dictionary.
【答案】28. A 29. C 30. D 31. C

【28题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中的“The damage was great because the starting point of the shaking was not far below the ground. (破坏是巨大的,因为震源离地面不远)”可知,地震严重是因为震源靠近地面。故选A项。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中的“Many people continued to sleep outside, fearing smaller earthquakes that often follow a major one.(许多人继续睡在外面,担心大地震之后会发生小地震)”可知,地震后许多当地人继续睡在外面是为了避免之后可能会发生的小地震。故选C项。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“Many of the homes are made from wood, rock and mud, which made them fall easily when the ground started shaking. One military worker said “it is difficult to pull people out alive” because the walls turned into ruins and did not leave any space for air.(许多房屋是由木头、岩石和泥土建造而成,在地震发生时,这样的结构极易倒塌。一名军方工作人员表示,“营救幸存者极其困难”,因为墙体瞬间变成了废墟,没有留下任何可供空气流通的空间)”可推知,这名军事工作者认为救援几乎没有希望,因为这种特殊的房屋使人们难以生存。故选D项。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。结合全文及文章第一段“Workers continue to search the ruins of a large earthquake that hit Morocco Friday. Officials say almost 2,500 were killed in the quake, but that they expect that number will rise.
